Chief Editor of the Oxford English Dictionary
Robert Burchfield was a New Zealand-born British lexicographer and academic. He served as the Chief Editor of the Oxford English Dictionary from 1957 until his retirement in 1988. Burchfield was a leading expert in the field of linguistics and was known for his meticulous approach to dictionary compilation. He was also a prolific writer and published several books on language and history. Burchfield was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and was awarded a CBE in 1988 for his services to lexicography.
