Robert Gates is an American politician and military officer who served as the 22nd United States Secretary of Defense from 2006 to 2009 and as the Director of Central Intelligence from 1991 to 1993. He has also served as the National Security Adviser to President George H.W. Bush and as the Deputy National Security Adviser to President George W. Bush.
