Sergei Sobchak is a Russian politician and businessman who served as the Mayor of St. Petersburg from 1996 to 1999. He was born in Leningrad, Soviet Union, and graduated from Leningrad State University. Sobchak was a close friend and advisor to Vladimir Putin, who served as his deputy mayor. After leaving politics, Sobchak became a successful businessman and entrepreneur. He was arrested in 2023 on charges of embezzlement.
