Shiro Ishii was a Japanese physician and military officer who served as the commander of Unit 731, a biological warfare unit during World War II. Ishii was born in 1892 and graduated from the University of Tokyo. He served in the Imperial Japanese Army and was stationed in Manchuria, where he became involved in the development of biological warfare. Ishii was arrested by the Allies after the war and was put on trial for war crimes. He died in 1959.
