Sir Bartle Frere was a British colonial administrator who served as the Governor of Natal from 1870 to 1877. He played a key role in the lead-up to the Zulu War, and his policies and decisions contributed to the outbreak of conflict. Frere was a prominent figure in British colonial politics and was known for his conservative views. He was knighted in 1870 for his services to the colony.
