St. Simeon Stylites was a Christian ascetic and hermit who lived in the 5th century. He is best known for his extreme asceticism, living on top of a pillar in the Syrian desert for 37 years. Simeon was a devout Christian who renounced worldly life to devote himself to prayer and contemplation. He was revered by the early Christian Church for his piety and his example of self-denial. Simeon's life has been the subject of numerous hagiographies and has inspired many artists and writers throughout history.
