Susan Sontag was an American author and philosopher. She was a prominent public intellectual and a leading figure in the American intellectual community. Sontag was born in New York City and grew up in a Jewish family. She studied at Harvard University and later at Oxford University. She was a prominent critic of American foreign policy and was a vocal advocate for human rights. Sontag was a prolific writer and published numerous books on politics, culture, and philosophy.
