Vere Goold was an Irish tennis champion and aristocrat who won Ireland's first tennis championship in 1879. He went on to compete in the prestigious Wimbledon tournament later that year. However, his life took a dramatic turn when he was sentenced to death for a crime that shocked the world. Goold spent the last 30 years of his life in the notorious French penal colony on Devil's Island. Despite his tragic end, Goold remains a fascinating figure in Irish history.
