Civil rights activist and martyr
Viola Liuzzo was a Detroit housewife who became a civil rights activist after witnessing the brutal murder of her friend, James Reeb, during the Selma to Montgomery marches. She joined the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and participated in several protests and demonstrations, including the Selma to Montgomery marches. Liuzzo's activism led to her arrest and imprisonment, but she continued to fight for civil rights until her tragic death in 1965. She is remembered as a courageous and dedicated advocate for racial equality.
