Commander of the Alamo defenders
William Barret Travis was an American lawyer and military officer who served as the commander of the defenders of the Alamo during the Texas Revolution. Born in 1809 in Louisville, Kentucky, Travis moved to Texas in the 1830s and became a prominent figure in the fight for independence. He is best known for his famous letter to the people of Texas, in which he urged them to take up arms against the Mexican army. Travis was killed in the Battle of the Alamo in 1836, but his legacy has endured as a symbol of bravery and sacrifice. He is remembered as a hero of the Texas Revolution and a champion of freedom.
