Actor and playwright known for his Sherlock Holmes adaptations
William Gillette was an American actor and playwright. He is best known for adapting the Sherlock Holmes stories into plays and films. Born on March 26, 1853, in Portland, Maine, he studied at Dartmouth College before becoming a successful actor. In 1899, he appeared as Holmes in a Broadway production of the play The Hound of the Baskervilles. Gillette was also an inventor and patented a self-winding watch.
