Former Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency
Yukiya Amano was a Japanese diplomat and nuclear physicist who served as the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from 2009 to 2011. He was a key figure in the development of the Iran nuclear deal and played a crucial role in negotiating the agreement. Amano was also a strong advocate for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. He passed away in 2019 while serving as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Amano was born in 1957 in Tokyo, Japan, and earned his Ph.D. in nuclear physics from the University of Tokyo.
