So I don't know how it's gonna sound with how these sort of audio content will be, but I can tell you that I'm pretty darn determined to not spill my coffee. And also to tell you about the number one downloaded app on the App Store and it is, you guessed it, MapQuest. Isn't that for TechnoGeeks with spreadsheet? I downloaded MapQuest yesterday and used it on my drive. And I'm here to report that it worked pretty well and it felt like I was finally in a small, small way.

5:06you're up there, you're playing in, you know, you're playing under the bright lights of Yankee Stadium. And I have a busy day today. You and I have some extra recordings to do. I have to get out of here because there's a baseball game I'm going to this evening. It's just kind of like, and I have some errands to run in between. I'm getting fitted for a night guard, okay? We all have things going on. Right, that's what I'm doing at the baseball game. It's free night guard night. It's a... Well, you know, they should have done that when... It was going to be, it was going to be A.U. Henniosaur's night guard night last year, but they never got to it, so they just still have them now. They should have done that during the sad season where Junior fell asleep in the dugout. They should have had like... Ken Griffey Jr. Nightmask night. So you got a busy day today. So I'm busy day to day. So yesterday, I was like, you know what? So part of the process for this is the producer asks

6:08everybody in the chain, like, what are the topics on your mind this week? It's kind of a good way for the producer to sort of offload some of the work to us if we're whispering into microphones. But it also does make sense because it gives you a sense of like what people are comfortable with and what they're not. And I can even say like, hey, I don't know a lot about this topic that you guys are talking about. Don't lean on me. Here are some things on my mind. And also the process of writing out my notes on the topic is actually kind of a good way for me to get centered a little bit or actually give it some thought, you know, on whatever topics I'm proposing or reacting to. So usually that would happen late on a Thursday. But yesterday, I was like, I need to get ahead of this because Thursday is going to be cooked for me. And I don't know what my Friday looks like before this live show. Let me just get them all of my notes on the chain. And I even said like, hey, I'm going to be a little bit out of pocket on Thursday. So I'm just like, here are all of my notes. Here are links. And when I get into this mode, I feel less like a guest on the show. And I feel more like a guest producer on the show because this is what I used to do. I mean, I am doing what I used to do with you and Dave Ross, you know, at Cairo or public radio,

7:11a little bit, just like, here's a bunch of ideas. And then here are my thoughts on these ideas or where we could take the conversation. And then I start putting in links and text and stuff. And at the end of the day, I'm like, oh, this is what I used to do for a living, you know. So I sent all of that and I was really proud of myself. That thing, I had it sent it like, I don't know, I was dumped by like 430 or something yesterday afternoon. I thought I was going to be working way into the wee hours on this. But I just got a private note from the producer and Daddy Bill was copied on it saying, hey, we're just putting the show sheet together like wondering what topics you're interested in, haven't seen anything from you yet. And I'm like, my dudes, maybe you didn't see it because I was meticulous. And I sent it before everybody else and you're all copied on it. And so that's why I was scrambling. I'm kind of like, hey, I think you should have that in your email or whatever. Oh, I thought they just were whizzing another smoker at you. There was another topic that you weren't expecting. No, no. It's because you think they didn't receive your very detailed, very thorough guest producer Doug Shrekingos.

8:11By the way, if you know you know. Yeah. Give yourself a little pat on the back, TBT-O listener. If those words I just said admit any sense to you. But so you're saying that I'm sure that he just didn't. Well, Bill's now saying he's not seeing any of these. So I need to write some folks aren't seeing this. Now, here's the deal. I am going to me. I'll send it to you. I get it. I'll also probably go through and kind of fix some of it. But here's the deal. A lot when you were producing Ross first. Yeah, you learn. You learn. I kind of have to go and behind you into a lot of. Yeah, definitely. That was the dynamic there. But anyway, as I recent this, I have some exciting news from you for you that I, that is related to all of this that I intended to tell you at the top of the show, which isn't about just like typos and emails and all the things I regret starting the show with today. But guess who I am on the show with tomorrow. So this is a panel, right? It's Bill Radke hosting in the three guests. Just talking, just cutting it up about the week's news. It's what we do. 9:11And so I will do it that way. Well, you like like, like, oh, I was more thinking like, I don't know why because for some reason, chopping it up made me think of, as I mentioned, we were talking about the Niners scammer. How I love that Chad Ocho Sinko and Shannon Sharp just start every sentence with, and Ocho. Oh, yeah. Could you make up brief nicknames for the other panelists and always like it was Joni Balter. Just be like, Balts. Or like, Balts. You know what I mean? You know what I mean? Just like, I want you to, I want you to, I want you to be a real born, you're a great breaker. Of that. Okay, who, like, give me some hints. Who is, who are you going to be on the panel with? So you want some hints. So I'll tell you the first person. The first person is Claudia Rowe, who I don't know personally, but former New York Times, now on the Seattle Times editorial board. Seems like a very accomplished journalist and author and has a focus on, I think the intersection of children and the government. I'm already saying the intersection of that's how you know I'm getting ready for public, public, radio, you're getting ready. Yeah, I'm getting in there. But who, but the other person is somebody who is, you and I, let's just put it this way.

10:15It's going to be a little bit like, it's going to be the person, this is giving way too much with the person I'm on with, might recognize my production style. Is it David Ross? It is David D Ross. Are you? I'm going to have to tune in for that. Well, I assumed you always tuned in when I'm on the radio, but yeah, now you need to tune in with two different radios. That is so fun. I'm like, you know, it's because the human brain is an odd thing and mine is maybe even more odd than most. When you said something like, guess what I'm going to be on with, I assumed it wasn't Dave Ross, but my thought was I should mention to them off air later that they should really think about having Dave Ross on. That's where my brain was like, well, it's not going to be Dave Ross, but why isn't it? It should be great on that. And then I thought, Andrew, do you understand this is all occurred to me in the nanosecond of time between you saying, you know, not even not even the part where you said it's going to be someone that would be familiar with your production style somehow

11:15right before that I thought, it's not going to be Dave Ross. God, it would be cool if it was Dave Ross. They should have him on. Wait, Dave Ross is retired and he doesn't like to do stuff half-assed either. And so he probably wouldn't want to do this because to prep this in his week would then it would take him out of retirement. It would mean that he's now he's working again. The whole reason he retired is because he doesn't want to work because unlike me, he doesn't like to just like wander in without knowing what's going on. All of that went through my mind in a snap quick moment of time. But boy, am I glad to hear that he's going to be there and you guys are going to be reunited and it feels so good. I mean, but you want to also talk about impostor syndrome. Like I'm writing these notes. No, he will have that. Yeah, no, I mean, exactly. And him being on with me, I mean, it must be intimidating as I still have a very stressful, you know, I still just have such a robust broadcasting career going for me right now. Now, my guess is Dave, this is probably the perfect little thing for Dave. I don't know how often he has done this on KUW. I'm sure I could look it up if I went to their website, but I'm guessing this isn't

12:18the first time they've had him on. And I'm guessing he doesn't do it all the time. Maybe he even like, you know, declines an invitation here or there, but it also probably scratches a little itch for him as a guy who just has thoughts on things and doesn't have to come in and host, but can sit there as one of four people in a room, just sharing his thoughts on, you know, local events and politics or whatever. I'll bet you it's it seems like it would be maybe the perfect little anecdote or a little spice for him in life. But I also am wondering, do you think I urge you to vote for me this November? That's right. That was we had him record like a hundred of those because then we shifted the we shifted the pitch on it. I can't buy. I heard you to vote for me this November. It was based on the story. I'm not to use that voice on the show. I want to put my evil inside of you. Yeah, exactly. Do you think you remember Skyjinks? Because when I saw you as going to be on the show, I was like, oh, I should tell them we're still using Skyjinks and then that and then I pre envisioned the blank stare. I will get in return.

13:19Oh, he would remuel. He has made so many little stings and production. That's going to be my. I think I think you remember you. But you know, Libby will I don't know if Libby will be in the studio. Our friend Libby Dankman, who for folks that might not track these things closely, who's somebody that we worked with at Cairo, she was also a producer there. She was your producer on Ross and Burbank before I ended up taking her job when she took another job somewhere else. So like, you want to LA and then she became a big host in LA on KPCC and then came back to Seattle and it's now the host of that midday slot. You know, you have to know that they're relaunching that now, right? They've been on hiatus because they're relaunching. She has a co-host with, oh, David, a cronum of the Seattle Times. I'm getting his name wrong, but he's going to be co-hosting starting next week. Oh, that's great. Yeah, kind of relaunching that show. Sound side. Very excited. Okay. You have to be careful when you're working with Dave tomorrow that there is attention.

14:23I'll betty for Dan and Gloria Steinem because I've been doing a lot of reading about Gloria Steinem today because of course she passed away on Wednesday, somebody who lived in an exceptional life and had a crazy backstory that I was unaware of. I knew in the broadest strokes of Gloria Steinem's importance to importance to what would be maybe described as second wave feminism. I know she founded Ms. Magazine, but I know she grew up in Toledo and her dad was this kind of fly-by-night antique salesman that kind of bailed on her mom and her mom went through some real issues and was mentally ill. Profoundly, Gloria Steinem didn't have any formal education until she was in sixth grade. She learned how to read from road signs as she was in the back of the car going between some, they lived in the summer at this dance hall that her dad would run and then they would drive back to Toledo in the fall towing these antiques that her dad would be trying

15:27to sell in different spots and she's had a really kind of crazy life leading up to ending up going to Smith College and then being a journalist but being taken totally unseriously as was unfortunately the case then and to some degree probably is still now. She got her first break by writing a very sort of immersive journalism piece called A Bunny's Tale where she dressed up and was like a playboy bunny at a club and wrote this big piece about how demeaning it was for the women who were doing this and that got some attention and then gay to lease who you know I'm a fan of. I hope he apologized for this at some point I don't know but he said at the time he said there's always some cute girl that shows up in New York to be a journalist and this year that cute girl's glorious Steinem. Damn dog. Gross. Dude like man I really hope at some point he wrecked. She also by the way glorious and I'm also like advocated for Norman Mailer when he was running

16:29for I think mayor of New York and so she clearly was able to navigate around a certain amount of toxic masculinity but I mean she just had obviously a very incredible life was only married one time it was in her 60s to Christian Bale's dad because he needed a green card. Oh she was like you know she didn't see marriage as being the the the thing for her except when she met Christian Bale's dad who needed a green card. Wow. Do you think Christian Bale called her mom? Well here's what I know I watch an art dude I was like I was I feel like three hours in Steinemland this morning including watching architectural digest interviewing her about her apartment in New York where as she was like just showing off interesting items all with all of which had backstory and had to do often with like artifacts and things involving women in the world and of the world. I just noticed that there was a small frame picture of Christian Bale as a kid on one

17:31of the shelves not like she wasn't showing it off it was just there so I it would appear they were close but but something else that I didn't know about the movement about second wave feminism was that you know Betty for Dan and Gloria Steinem ended up kind of working together a lot but then having a pretty big falling out and the the theory of the case from a lot of people was that Betty for Dan who was a bit older than Gloria Steinem and had really been instrumental in in sort of really starting this thing was quite quite frustrated at some point when Gloria Steinem who came after got all the attention and was suddenly held up as the face of the movement and that really bothered Betty for Dan to where she started to just like publicly excoriate Gloria Steinem and the thing that people were bummed out about by that was that that was hurtful to the overall movement like they she might have had a problem with Gloria Steinem but going out there and and blasting Gloria Steinem as a as a charlatan is then not good for the overall movement and I'm worried that that's going to happen with you and Dave Ross tomorrow because Dave Ross founded this idea of having

18:35an opinion about things and Seattle on the radio and now you're the young as the New York Times described Gloria Steinem more photogenic version of Dave Ross. Oh wow. See that's I mean Betty for Dan and you're the Gloria Steinem and I don't know how this is not going to get weird. Weirdly that's not exactly where I thought you were going with things. I mean that's not how you thought this conversation was going to go today and no I mean it sort of is it just took a weird little turn at the end because I I agree with everything that you just said and it's been a concern of mine as well regarding my relationship with with Dave going forward especially after tomorrow but I thought it was going to be third wave wall shanism. If you recall that's probably a show title as I I came in with the sky the original sky jinx mix right and I said I made this I made this for our show and it had all the drops and everything and I'm looking for it here. I don't know if you have it there but then always a Ross came in and he said oh yeah no I can I can punch that up a little bit and he took it into his you know laboratory and added vocals and stuff and I got admit

I saw somebody was it one of our listeners must have sent it to me because I'm not on those those channels where this stuff is being talked about but apparently she actually did a cover of his song on Instagram before I think before she had released her song. Hey Dave how are you and then trying to get around to the point where you can be like hey do you remember this kind of audio bit and then playing it in somehow it just when I do that kind of stuff I never I never get the response that I'm looking for whatever that response might what I wish I could do is fire my own audio there because you know at the very end of the show there's a segment where they say you know what made you smile this week it's like they're a little moment of zen kind of style and there and I could say well I think that made me smile was finding out that I'm going to be doing the show with my old colleague Dave Ross and a lot of people don't know that we actually collabed on a pretty famous sting and I could play that form on the air and ask him if you remember that that would be a little bit you have to be pretty brief with that little ender though because sometimes you're running out of time and I don't want to be stepping on all of the other panelists time for that little moment

23:48school iPods that I bought on a tiktok that I I brought on here yesterday and I said I bought this thing and I forgot I don't have any music really downloaded anymore well I was wrong about that because yesterday I got on to my my Apple music or whatever and of course I just plugged this thing into the computer just to see like how does it you know what's the software the good news is it's just you know it's like plugging a any kind of a SD card or something into your into your computer it just shows up on the desktop oh it's just okay yeah and I also you know things are a little different on max then PCs PCs still have the kind of classic window system that you would have seen whereas Mac is sort of oh in fact it reminds me of something I kind of want to tell you but well we'll figure out if I can tell you the story later in the show but Macs I was thinking about this yesterday because of some issues an older person in my life was having with computers and I was thinking I almost wonder if Macs have made the integration so seamless that it's confusing to people who didn't grow up kind of knowing

24:51what's going on in other words let me put it this way I was talking to somebody yesterday who was an older person who was very very very frustrated with some customer service and it was because the instruction manual they were reading told them to send an email but they were confusing the idea of an email with a web address and so I was talking to this person he kept saying like I I typed in the email perfectly but then it sent me to this other place and I was like how is an email sending you somewhere I'm like I think you're confusing and I did like kind of explain email versus website sort of and I and this is a person who it's obviously came to computers much later in life but also because the iPhone in a certain way is so user friendly that you don't you just type things in and it just takes you where you want to go yeah that he kind of was missing this critical idea that there's a there's some differences if that's all started jammed that in there but was the computer that he was using a Mac or yeah yeah as a Mac yeah so that's what I mean is like and so he just went back to his Mac and he's taking this instruction manual this physical instruction

25:54manual and very carefully typing the email address but he as he's telling me the story in his frustration with the customer service I keep saying I think you're saying some wrong words here and it took us a while to figure out oh no you were just missing misinterpreting how this all works but my point is I'm sort of blaming the the the victim here a little bit but it's almost like Mac has made it so that when you have a screen that is showing you all of your files it basically kind of looks like the old iTunes screen right it's also and so it's almost like the software and the file system is more integrated in a seamless way than if I were to plug this thing into my PC it might just be a pop-up thing that literally shows a list of MP3s you know name me yeah yeah it was very it is it was well speaking of instruction manuals this is the first thing that happened was I plug it in to my to my computer and I'm looking at I'm not looking at my computer I'm looking at the little iPod device and it's it sort of pops on for a minute shows me the battery is fully charged

26:55and then it turns off and then I'm like well why did it do that I'm a little confused and then I'm like well I should probably get the manual for it but of course I'd already thrown the manual out the first thing you do for it literally the first thing you do it doesn't even come across it was under Andrew it was underneath unc it was underneath ohcho it was underneath full soggy thing of coffee grounds oh you had to pull it out of the coffee filter full of coffee grounds on top of the manual for the iPod like other than maybe some old I don't know like banana peels banana peels maybe egg shells what else I guess I'm just describing a compost pile but at this point did you just go online and say oh just show me the show no I pulled it out I kind of like pulled it out I kind of did this and I walked back over to the computer and at that point I was like oh let me just look at the desktop and there it was we're just sitting there I didn't even I never by the way I just went and threw it back out after this I never opened the manual but I did retrieve it from under the coffee grounds all I had to do is just so then there it is I can see this little thing I rename it iPod and I just I'm scrolling through my my

28:00you know the my Apple music formerly known as iTunes and I'm going like oh here's some stuff this is an old this is an album by throw me the statue I'm like that's pretty old that's got to be from the era where this is like downloaded music so I I select that album I drag it over to where the iPod icon is and it goes and then I unplug the iPod and I scroll around and sure enough there's the album and I hit play and it works nice that's it yeah I go that's interesting so then I just start going through and I realized that I have a ton of this music still in my Apple music that I still have access to that was stuff that I ripped in there in between 2000 and like 2012 or 15 well hey welcome to the world where you're going to hear the first track of vampire weekends a punk well it's actually life you know what it's going to be well I'm looking at it right now oh by the way is there anything more satisfying I don't know if you're good oh you got that

29:01clicking wheel it's hard to do it I can hear it yeah there you go Lucius spinning the wheel but it makes that it's so actual clicking let's see what the very first thing on the list is going to be because yeah it's for years it was a punk uh well this is kind of where you know what it did this is kind of annoying it's not as fun because it's a number I'm looking through albums the first thing that comes up is a telekinesis album called 12 desperate straight lines because the number 12 super seeds it but this thing also by the way has a speaker on it is speaker that's an improvement right oh that's really cool it has a little speaker at the bottom the way our phones do and it's not it's not like I'm gonna use the speaker in lieu of a Bluetooth but you can just hear what you're trying to figure out you know it also has an FM radio well that's I was waiting for you to say that I didn't want to steal your thunder on that but you say you

30:05know you wouldn't use the speaker but I found myself down I found myself using the speaker on my phone recently and you know I'm very against using the speaker on your phone in any kind of public place but I have a little pair of earbuds that I've lost in the past few days and so when I and I don't want to wear my big over the ear headphones when I'm gonna walk with Lucy just because I feel like I got to have a little bit more spatial awareness you know and so what I've been doing to listen to a baseball game or to listen to a podcast after a baseball game or something like that I've been just taking my phone putting on whatever radio station or podcast when I listen to putting it in my pocket and just listening to it without headphones because I figure I'm outside like if I pass anybody on the sidewalk I'm only annoying them for like two seconds I don't think it's that big deal and so honestly the fact that that thing both has a radio and a internal speaker don't sleep on that internal speaker that might get you out of a few jams I like that how much was that you might be asking because it's I think it was like 60 bucks what really yeah and I got the

31:07bigger I got the like hundred and twenty eight whatever by like I got the because at per usual I was like well there's one that sixty four and I'm gonna go one twenty eight this was not I'm starting to really feel pretty bullish about this purchase um I sat there yesterday while I was doing some other work uh just kind of like casually grabbing all of this old music and it was so much fun because again this is all music from an era of my life it's not going to be any of my Stella lefty stuff or any of my no-a-con it's all like you know it's just it's this little time capsule of a lot of these bands like aqua duct and there was a band called tilly in the wall that I really liked they're out of Omaha and their percussionist was a tap dancer they didn't have a drum kit they had a tap dancer which kind of sounds a little a little corny and extra but it wasn't like if I didn't tell you was a tap dancer you wouldn't actually kind of know it and just like I was just sitting there

33:11fire hose of newness all the time whether it's new content uh visually you know whether it's new tv shows or streaming shows or movies or new music or new whatever it's I just forget about the other stuff that I used to like and this is causing me this is a little bit like a jukebox at a bar that isn't connected to the internet you know I've talked about the one that they used to have at the tattletail that had like four playable songs on it and I used to like really enjoy trying to figure out how to find those four playable songs and program them um because there was this kind of limitation there and I kind of I could see myself speaking of taking a walk or whatever I could see which was is a great uh throw me the statue song oh I know you don't believe in a dog but you want to know something extremely strange that happened yesterday so there's a band called throw me the statue that I I really liked probably ten fifteen years ago I will not play the music here because maybe it will get us pulled but pretty obscure did you ever did you ever mess with those guys I know

34:13the name but no I don't know them so they were one of the bands that I was dragging over to the iPod yesterday and I was like and also the thing was I had to kind of make a I was kind of making a decision too it was like do I want to bring I didn't take I didn't just like highlight the entire librarian drag it over I was kind of going album by album you know it's going do I want because sometimes there was a record that I kind of got into but I don't need to bring that over to the iPod if that makes sense this was a bit of a bit of a filtration process I was doing go through I would look I would say you want to bring that over they had one there's one good track on that album so I was doing that with each one of these bands and throw me the statue as one of them they made the cut I get a text from my daughter at about two thirty or three o'clock yesterday and it is I'm going to go let's see here I'm gonna go back and try to find this so I can read this to you I get a text at exactly three o'clock one p.m. from my daughter hey do you remember this album

37:21a wonderful little experience a couple a couple of weeks ago or something I had to get a new watch band from my watch because it broken the watch itself was fine and I think I probably told you this years ago but when I was in a similar situation where my watch I didn't need a new watch band several years ago but I needed it somebody to put a watch band on my watch for me because something was a funky with this vintage watch I had so I found this watch repair shop in Lake City this neighborhood here in Seattle and it's right in the old school part of Lake City where the Rimrock kind of used to be it all that I just absolutely adore it was my favorite the Rim Rocks day out probably my first favorite bar in Seattle of course it's no longer around but anyway kind of an old school little part of this neighborhood gave porno and the the Rimrock it definitely rocks daycows the Rimrock stayc house meet me at the Rimrock stayc house anyway so years and years ago this guy fixed my watch for free he just because he just had to reattach something for me that I couldn't do at home and he said and I'm like what do I owe you and he's like I don't know what do you want to owe me I was like

38:24I don't know and I just gave him five or ten bucks or something like that and I said listen I promise you any watch services I need going forward I'm coming here I don't know if I said that out loud but I made that vowed to myself and years later I have kept it so I actually needed to buy a new watch band the other day and so I go to this little watch shop it's I mean it is old school you walk in and it's a tiny little room you've got about maybe you can fit three or four customers if they were all it's like the size of an elevator where the customer stand and then you're at a little glass like counter right and then you're working with one guy who's helping you and then there's a guy in the behind him hunched over working on a watch right and it's always the same when you go in there and it's always three 15 p.m. when you go in there somehow anyway far different galaxy so I help this guy I help I pick out my watch band and then I go to pay and he's installing it and then I go to pay and he's like oh we're cash only which I knew I always feel weirdly embarrassed when I'm in a place at a zold school like that and it's cash only and I know it's cash only but then I pull out my credit card because I just feel like such a I feel

39:28like a liberty or like I don't know the score or something like that like a dive bar or something you want to see like you know embarrassed yourself exactly so I'm like oh of course you guys are cash only I forgot I'm like yeah let me find an ATM he's like yeah just go to the bar next door so I go to the bar next door and I'm trying to look at the map what used to be the rim rock no it is called it's different it's called the back door pub and I was wondering if you know it's Lake City only has to be cool to the remarks take that one let's go to the rim rock and then finish things up at the back door um yes sir so yeah that is interesting Lake City only has suggestive sounding drinking holes oh the drinking hole is the third one okay yes I feel like they didn't have the same director for the drinking hole I think it's really kind of they were tried to recreate that magic anyway so he's like yeah there's an ATM in the back and so again this is like mid day on a weekday or something like that and I go into this bar and again I think the term dive bar is a little bit overused but this is a classic dive bar and it's the

40:32middle of a very sunny afternoon and there are regulars in there and they're all pulling tabs and somebody sees me come in they know right away I'm out there to drink they're like the ATM is in the back it was a customer there's a dog sitting next to one table while somebody was just like pulling tons of tabs in the middle of the afternoon like I walked in here and I was like if I didn't have a car with me and a dog back home this would be the beginning of the end of my evening like this way I would just be I would just be a little more in today and exactly this was a while ago but there are a couple of weeks ago so anyway I go into this bar I use the ATM which is all the way in the back I regretfully leave I'm just like I look around I'm like I've got to come back here I go back to the watch shop I pay for my watch band and then I as I'm leaving the watch store I'm like oh that record store that I like is just one door down from the bar so like basically these three buildings next to each other is an old school watch repair shop a dive bar that won me over and then a place I think it's called hex induction records named after an album by the fall I believe

41:36and I've been in there before and again a tiny tiny little space but there is some old guy who was in the record store with me I first ran into him at the watch shop so this is like the like I'm on like me and him where I'm like the old man Lake City Circuit on a Wednesday afternoon like we both go into the watch shop to take care of our watch related business then we head over to hex induction records and then we're picking out records and again it's the middle of the afternoon but there's like five people in this tiny record store and everybody's talking about and like all walks like various kind of ages the genders identity is just like this small little group of people that don't have really probably much in common other than we're all in this record store together and like conversation is just sort of flowing about this art Tatum record or not not art Tatum who is it who is the jazz messengers art Blakely and the jazz messengers I love probably one of my favorite group names of all and we're all talking about this art Blakey record Blakely record art Blakely that's why I

43:42drinking was really when Camaro Kevin I had a phase where we would go to this um place called Pexos that was up oh you know why we got into that he and Anita used to live in this apartment building on Lake Cityway I think it was their first apartment area called the sole layer or something and it was up by you know value village on Lake Cityway oh yeah that value village they the building was near there and so across the street was this like sort of dive bar and I believe I think it went through a few different names at one point it's called like Pexos or something and that's where we used to kind of like post up and it was just you know we just for some reason I mean I the funny part is my childhood was very much about that section of Lake City because that's the Dix drive in that I worked at right there by the rimrock and all of that so I'm very familiar with that but I wasn't of drinking age yet so it would never occurred to me and then by the time I was we just had different places that we would go to but I when I googled that that pub that you were describing the first thing that just like you know I don't think they have a website which is almost always a good sign like a dive bar a true dive bar should at the most

1:13:54in a way kind of related what we were just talking about have you been hearing all the map quest yeah yeah I saw in your notes I downloaded map quest over the weekend too but you're ahead of my game on this but the thing is and but I'm a little bit ashamed because I saw it in the show sheet today I was like oh yeah that's right I downloaded map quest and I have it here on my phone but like I am so you know keep in mind my phone is an android you know to Google based phone my whole everything I do is through Google Google docs go gmail you know like everything and so I realized I was in the car yesterday as I said with Genevieve and Lucy and like we were trying to like kind of navigate to one place to another that we hadn't done that exact trek before so I just said to my car you know how do I get to this place and of course it defaults to Google maps it wasn't until this morning I was like oh that's right I downloaded map quest but I need to integrate it into my life better and have my car talk to it better well the reason that we're talking about map quest today if you didn't hear yet is because they have rocketed to the most downloaded app on the app

1:14:55store at least they were as of like yesterday because they are the only of the kind of big I guess you know sort of mapping and directional companies they have not bent the knee to the fact that the the Trump administration issued an executive order declaring that Lake Ontario is now called Lake America uh Apple did it Google did it and Google also owns a way or no Apple owns no Google owns ways which is the one that I use and so map quests said we're not going to do that they also didn't do it with the Gulf of Mexico I believe in what and what map quest what they said I think this is actually a pretty elegant solution to this and I would like the other companies to do the same thing they just said you can change it in our system if you want they're like we have a system that allows you to change you want to call Lake Ontario Lake America you just have to go in and do that we are not going to do that for you we are going to go with what the consensus around the world is of what the thing is called now am I trying to drive to Lake Ontario Andrew

1:16:58to tell it you know my car has all the microphones and stuff in it too but I just don't I don't tell it I don't do that I should really actually just start that would probably be easier beck it does that to all of the texting when she's driving if someone texts her it just starts talking out of her car yeah yeah so when you're using mapping in other words you're just literally looking at your phone no no your your phone is mirroring so you were able to plug in you were able to call the the map quest up on so you're the screen that you look at yeah I what I do is I so I was going down to town and I was I knew I knew where I was going I was going to home people I know how to get there but I just wanted to test how map quest did it and I just what I do is I type it in which is I know this is dumb and antiquated I just has never occurred to me that I could speak to this stuff so I will type home depot previously what I would do again if I needed to know how to get to the home depot in ways I would type home depot and it would auto complete it for me I would hit go and it would say do you want to go now and then I'd say yes and it would start mapping it for me and I would plug that in to actually like a physical usbc plug I have Bluetooth but it's a little less

1:18:01reliable so I just hardline into my car play and I like leave my phone on the passenger seat and now I'm looking at a screen in my car that's showing me the direction yeah that's how I do it and I just did that with map quest yesterday instead of doing it with ways and it just worked exactly the same my theory is that these maps are all sharing the same meta data at some level I know that some people are like know this one's definitely better the Google maps is better than the Apple maps or whatever and maybe that is true but for relatively straightforward things I think they're pretty interchangeable they all kind of do the same thing well that's what I've that because I think weight a Google bot ways a long time ago so I remember when I first moved down to LA everybody's like oh you got to use ways I was like okay so I used ways instead you know instead of the Google maps that I always use but then not long after I was down there it was clear that oh Google just bought ways that it's literally the same information is just a slightly different interface and you could have like celebrities do the voice on ways you know and I don't know if like I don't know what

1:19:02map quest is using like where they got their info from but again it it seemed it seemed to be basically the same as as the other ones you know again maybe there's some some slight variations depending on some proprietary info but like for me basically I go like one of four places and the reason that I even use the mapping stuff generally speaking is just for traffic avoiding traffic that's maybe where using map quest I guess might might kind of provide a slight inconvenience because all of this stuff is crowdsourced and so my guess is that you know whichever one is being used the most is also going to give me the most up to information about traffic because what it's tracking is all the other people that are using that same system their phones are being used as little canaries and little coal mines and how fast is their phone moving is what's did what's indicating where the traffic is slow so the more data points you have the better yeah so if map quest has fewer data points maybe that's a slight slight disadvantage and who you know who knows I'm sure I'll probably
