From Tally to Cali, it's time to wake up! Wake up! Wake up! Warchant.com is your ultimate seminal sports source. And this is Wake Up Warchant. For seminal sports! I'm coming! I'm coming! I'm coming! I'm coming! Now here's Warchant.com's ass on Hujimand. Yeah! Three, four! Wake up! Swake Up! Warchant. Wake up! Swake Up! Warchant, presented by Cummins. Coming up on today's show, Tony White contorts himself to the Nth degree to explain the defensive lapses. Is the blame game on offense, more clean cut? And part one of the mailbag with a focus on Mike Norvell and his deteriorating playcalling. Wake Up Warchant is presented by Cummins. Cummins lifestyle, follow it on Instagram. We do this every single week. Generating discussion sparked by Cummins. Best question gets featured in a breakout video later on in the week. But that person gets entered into a drawing at the end of the month for a gift bag. We're going to do the actual gift bag drawing here later on.
You can be part of this all by joining us at Warchant.com, entering a question in the mailbag. Renegade Express. It's usually pinned at the top of the travel council Tuesday evening or so. And then we lock it down on Wednesday morning. Core, there was over 30 replies by the time I got back to it. So this is going to be part one of a two-part show. But we do appreciate everybody's energy engagement. A lot of the questions, like kind of moral on the lines of guys. Let's wait and see. Let's take more of a wait and see approach about Norvell in this season or they more like angry. Yeah, like why so negative? They lost by a lot of possession to a ranked team. Right. You know, like why are we panicking? Yeah. No, there's the 260-yard difference discrepancy was a big reason why. Yeah. All right. Well, let's get to that. I don't know who we want to blame for that discrepancy more. This show is going to be a little bit more back looking, reverse looking. I don't know how you properly say that.
Forward looking would be tomorrow's show. But we're going to kind of maybe go through some of the questions that focus more on tomorrow. I don't know because tomorrow's show will have just talked to Norvell again. So it might be backwards looking. You know, it might be forward looking as in changes to a program, potentially. I got you. As you were saying, Aslan, sorry, I interrupt it again. So on Wednesday, it was some Harris, Jr. and Tony White having to come walk the plank and discuss what the hell happened on Monday night. And I know Tim went first, but I feel like we should probably start off with Tony. And it was Tony's opening statement that generated this just an incredible, incredible explanation for I guess, you know, what he thought was happening the night of the game and then having some time to kind of let it digest and look at it over and they call it ratioing Corey. This, this tweet has 95 likes, but over 100 over 100 replies as we sit here and talk about in almost 30,000 views. And with all that said, here's Tony White talking about, I guess what he's trying to tell
his troops to get ready for the rest of the season. You're pissed off like hell and all that stuff. And then again, when you calm down, you look at the football and I think there was 69 plays in there and something and the men went out there and they played their, their tails off physical effort and for about 60 plays in there like they, they bought, they bought, you know, and there's nine plays that you want back, nine plays, 10 points, probably 250 yards. I mean, I show the guys the explosive tape and and there's about nine plays in their worth to half the offense and, and 10 clear points, you know, and you show them that and you show how when all 11 guys are playing as one and we play with that spirit, that effort, that attitude, that toughness, I mean, we're going to be, we're going to be one of the best defenses in the country. But until then, until we finish the game out that way, like we're going to, we're not going to do it. Yeah. Well, hey, man. I don't know.
Part of me admires the fact that he's trying to protect his guy still. I think he even said something about, you know, man drills crossover dribble approach at the line of scrimmage and he doesn't want to take away from laying his guys be guys. But I don't know, Corey, just isn't this the game of football? Like you're going to have 60, 70 plays and ultimately you're hoping to, you know, make a few extra plays and confuse the defense and do things to put them in uncomfortable situations and take advantage of it. Kind of just an interesting explanation from Tony White that I don't think anybody found adequate near or grounded in reality. No, it, well, the reality is, yeah, if you take away the nine plays, they only had 200, whatever, 80 yards of offense. Well, yeah, if you took away my genetics, I'd be good looking and have a lot of hair. Like we live in the world we live in and those plays counted and those points counted. And I can understand how Florida state fans might hear that just like last week when he talked about the communication because of the crowd. And then this week you hear that and you're like, what is, what is, what are we doing
here? I will, I will counter a little bit. I think that's my role in life. It's just to be the guy that the, the, the, the contrarian. I like listening to Tony White. I know that that his press conference on Wednesday might have driven some people crazy. There's not a lot of good things you can say when you give up 600 yards of, of offense. And I wrote this in my column. It's like I at least like having explanations of what happened. Like the first touchdown. Safety didn't get, safety was bust and nobody was supposed to be doing. Now, that's not, I don't know, that certainly doesn't absolve Tony White. Like who else is in charge of him knowing what he's supposed to be doing other than you? But I like knowing the other 10 guys knew what they're doing. If he'd have been where he's supposed to be, that's an interception. Maybe I don't like knowing that. I appreciate trying to explain it away because what I don't appreciate is, it's funny. I can't remember who was talking about it. They, somebody was talking to me about watching Ret Lashley's post came interview.
And like how refreshing it is to see a head coach talk like a human being. Just give explanations, be willing to throw guys under the bus if they don't play well. If they make a mistake, but also praise them when they play well. And so often in this program, especially on that other side of the ball, it's all about challenging as you did challenges. You didn't meet opportunities that you wouldn't guy. He won't say a guy dropped a pass. He'll just say we didn't finish the play. It's just stuff I'm tired of hearing. Tony White is kind of matter of fact like, yeah, this is what happened. This is what happened. We had a double blitz on the, on the field side against a bootleg. It should be an eight yard sack. But for some reason, maybe lights are too bright. This isn't a great explanation. Lights are too bright. Whatever game, game pressure. Our guy was in the wrong spot. It turns out to be a 15 yard play. So I do appreciate that he tries to explain it away. I also think he wants to be a defensive coordinator again in his lifetime. And it's smart to not just be come up to a podium be like, guys, I got no answers.
I don't know what they're doing. These guys have no clue what they're doing. And I don't know how to talk to them or teach them. So you've got to, you've got to exude confidence, even if it's fake confidence. But man, yeah, I, there is some, there is some truth to, they didn't play horrible. The whole game. It's third down, right? It's third down, mostly, right? Like if you, if you take a, because SMU is going to make plays, man, we can't act like they were playing New Mexico state this week. Like New Mexico States, our SMU is going to make plays against everyone. They're going to score 30. They're going to average more than 30 points this season. And that kid's a high-spin candidate for a reason. He ain't going to win it. But he's a high-spin candidate for a reason. They're going to score and they're going to make points and red lash, he's better than, uh, well, he's better than Tony White, but he's also better than your, your offensive head coach. But so you're going to give up some plays and you're going to give up some points. It's, there was some, they were okay against the run. They, you know, they did make, they did have some turnovers.
They did create turnovers. They were okay in the red zone. There was some, they were good in the red zone, actually. There's some stuff to, like, I don't know, hang your hat on. But I also understand at the end of the day, you're like, man, these are all, like, you keep saying that you're not communicating and they're not in the right place. And it was a lack of execution. Why, why didn't that get better from game one to game two and week zero to week one? You know what I mean? Like we, would you say that because I know it was a better team, but I thought both sides of the ball from week zero to week one got substantially worse. Hmm. That's on the coaching. So I don't want people to sit here and say I'm making apologies for Tony White. That was deplorable. Just the breakdowns, just the breakdowns. It doesn't make any sense that there are so many breakdowns. But, you know, at least he tries to explain how it happens. I mean, I guess, right? Like he's, he's, he's, he's not giving us excuses. He's giving us an explanation.
But I mean, ultimately, look at its stat broadcast and they have I've probably made a different definition for explosive play than most folks do. She probably bumped that up to like 20 or 25 yards on a passing play. But anyhow, any run over 10 yards, any passing play gained over 15 yards is considered an explosive on step broadcast, which is pretty much like the industry standard for tracking stats during games for these schools. Florida say got their balance score. They had four explosives on the passing side, four explosives on the running side. I don't. Are then McKay Dansey. I guess singletons, little shovels, flip, shuttle pass, shuffle pass or whatever. I can't remember the other ones. But so they had eight total Florida state. SMU had nine, including eight, including eight passing plays. So that's in their explosives went for 60 and 70 yards and 50 yards, not 16 and 19 and 19, 50, 30, 15, 64, 18, 79, 29.
If you just take those away as long as they got 250 yards off it's an easy dump. I just and again, I don't know. I mean, at the end of it, he does kind of qualify it with, you know, they have to do better. But just to say that, you know, we could be the best defense in the country. If we clean this up, I mean, imagine if Steve Adazio in 2014 after the Boston College reigns soaked, slop, the Florida is like, yeah, you know, it's nine plays there. We had to take away. I'm sure every coach could have said that at the podium for the 2014. Like Mike Gundy could have said it in Dallas after the Oklahoma State game. Well, listen, take these nine plays away. I think interesting way of looking at it. But I, the sad thing, sorry, Corey, I do agree that they did play kind of physical, like you know, Caleb LaValle was out there running around. Chris Jones obviously is a, he is an above average college linebacker. He belongs in a Florida state jersey. You know, I think Barker, listen, Barker came in well on that blitz. Jennings just made a better play.
You know, Rawls made a nice interception, although I don't think he graded out all that well. They there were moments. But again, like this is Florida state. It's your second game. You're going against a team that hasn't played a game at all. You know, they had to sit in that locker room. The visiting locker room for an hour and 40 minutes and go ice cold. And they come out and kind of just torture. I mean, he was throwing the ball much better in the first half than he did in the third quarter in the first half of the fourth quarter. Kevin Jennings. So I mean, it just every like court, like I was set on headlines. Everyone's pissed about everything and I'm pissed off about that. Yeah, but you're, yeah, I get it in your, in your right to be. I think you have to wonder why he's talking like that. I think that's the message he has to give that team because last year they quit the defense. Well, the whole team stopped playing. So you want them to still have confidence. They went, they gave him 11 games. They quit in the Florida game in the second half. I guess the pit, the pit game was a disaster. And I think it's just, I do think he thinks this defense can be pretty good. I don't think he anywhere close. There's no chance he thinks it can be the best in the country. They just don't have the personnel for it.
But he thinks they can be pretty good. And when you look at, I think the way he looks at it, the prism he's looking at it is, well, by gosh, when they do what they're supposed to do, we do have some talent. We can run with guys. We can, we can get through blocks. We can push guys backwards when they have the ball. He's seeing that. But until he, until he corrects, and I'm saying he, not day, until he, the guy that gets paid all this money to do it, well, they all get paid. We get it, but he gets paid the most. Well, I hope until he gets, until he gets it figured out with their all in the same page almost all the time, none of it matters. Doesn't matter how hard or physical they play. They're going to give up huge busts that turn into game changing place. And so I think the message there is, I know it does it look like we're close. I know we gave up 600 yards, but it wasn't as if SMU just ripped down the field, the whole game like 2013, Florida State, where I know they only put it once.
They turned it over four times. There was no three inouts, but it wasn't just first downplay 28 yards, first downplay 16 yards. They got him into third down. They just suck on third down. And I just, you know what I'm saying? It's like, so Florida State's defense didn't look like the way New Mexico states defense would look like against Ohio State. But this is Florida State like you should never agree. Look that that's a much bigger picture issue and problem. And I completely agree. I just think he's trying to, he's trying to keep these guys, knowing what's coming up. He's trying to keep these guys confident enough to realize. Because what can happen, I think, is when you get lit up like that, there's a chance you might think, man, do we just suck as football players? Not as a defense as football players. Am I just not very good? Am I not good enough to play here? Am I not good enough to play at this level? And I think as a coach, part of your job early in the season is to try to erase that and be like, no, no, this is because we're not doing the right things, not because you can't play.
You're just not focused in on what you need to focus in on. If you're where you're supposed to be in how we practiced it, that's an interception or that's a sack. But you weren't in against good teams. This is what happens. The problem with Florida State is they play a lot of good teams. And the fact that it wasn't cleaned up from game zero to our game, I got the week zero thing frozen. Yeah. Yeah. Game zero to game two. Game one to game two. The fact that it looked as bad. I thought it gets a better team. I get it. That's what's so troubling. It didn't look like there were any improvements made. Now they do have a buy week now. But you know, they got Alabama waiting for it. So we'll see, we'll see what that looks like. It will see how he talks after that one. But I get the frustration. I just, I do want to reiterate, I like that the guy like explain talks ball and I, they doesn't just talk in just words that don't mean much. Yeah, it's not vague. I mean, gives you. Yes. There's a very specific about things and he gives you real plays and,
and also want to point out like as much as he was talking about the communication, the execution, he did say multiple times. If you listen to the whole interview, that you know, they've got to be better as coaches. And it starts with him and trickles down. It all starts, it all stops with him. And then it trickles down to people below him, which include obviously his coaches and then the players. Yeah, his coach is in pretty much a hand-picked staff on the defense now, man. I wonder what Pat Sartan is up to. Pat, if you're out there, man, call me. We might have a slaughter too. We can hop you on the show and show what you're up to. And I also got the impression I could be completely wrong. Like to me being in that room with him, he wants to still be a head coach. He also wants to have a good DC job next year. And I think that's part of the messaging. It's like, look, I, there's a, I've called a perfect play for this. What can I do? What I call a perfect play against this. That should be an interception. We've had two straight weeks where Tony White's told us on a touchdown. Did it the defense, if the, if the players had caught run the play he was supposed,
that he called, they were interceptions. Now, not a great look. I'm sure every play Mike Norvels called to go for a touchdown if everybody did their job. It is like, okay, well, why are you doing that? Well, we know why you're doing that because Florida State is not your final destination. You want a job next year. We get it. It might also be the truth, but there's a reason he's pointing out like, you know, that big play they had. Yeah, we had a, we had a double blitz coming from the field. How does he get out of it? Don't know. Don't know. So, but, you know, that's, there's part of that going on as well. The Noles not great on cash down. Doesn't mean that you should be afraid of cash. Everybody, come on out to the corner pocket bar and grill tonight. 7 p.m. Bingo's going down. What a, what a segue that was. Will there will Thursday night football interview with Bingo? Heck no. All right. Bingo brings in the crowd, man. I mean, they don't have to get the game on somewhere, but no, Bingo brings in the crowd. Four rounds, $250 cash money up for grabs in each single round.

You know, I get outgain by like 260 yards. Everybody, you first off, you have to allow 585 yards, but then you have to barely muster over 300 yards, which I don't know. Maybe that's not
mustering. I mean, 324, not the worst output, but that's what floors eight put up on the board. They only got 24 points on the board after only after only after getting gifted pretty much. I should say gifted. Listen, there's two of them were takeaways. Two of them were like really bad decisions, but in any event, Tim Harris Jr. tasked with talking about the offense. The clip that I pulled out from Wednesday, Corey, was basically you asking him about like, hey, what's going on out? Lider or guys getting open? And I don't think this might have been like the shortest explanation that might have touched on the most amount of things that possibly could be going wrong with Florida State's offense. Here's Tim Harris Jr. from Wednesday. I think a lot of times people see Asha maybe holding the ball and think maybe they're not open or he doesn't have it or throw it. Are they winning outside? Yeah, you look back early in the game. There were opportunities there, you know, for God, they've pretty good space and, you know, for dukes a lot of times, you don't need a whole lot of space. That's just his game. But
my guy, you know, the speed that he has to put on people, you know, he rolls something and hit the dig route that we hit him on later in the game. You know, he had one earlier in the game that was the same way. Asha kind of got flushed out of the pocket. Same deal. Box was on a, you know, a deep climb route early in the game and, you know, we had some space there, but same thing that he had to get step up into the pocket and, you know, those things that we're just working, you know, because this is like everybody thing, you know, it's one, you know, everybody, we look at quarterback situation and when a ball don't get there, it's all him. But if you get squeezed out of the pocket, you get flushed out of the pocket. It takes your eyes away at times and, you know, a couple times that happened the other night. Now, there were some other times where we had a good pocket and, you know, he might have dropped his eyes and took off to run a little bit too quickly. So it's all of us, you know, we, it's, it's not everybody thing. I kind of like the fact that we're spreading blame because I don't want to put it on just one person because I believe co-chair is when he's saying that it's an everybody thing. But that's just what makes it so daunting, right? Corey, this is not a, this isn't just insert Malachi martial, which we might talk about later in this show. You know, the offensive line, I don't think is
nearly up to what they were hoping for. But you still do have this really talented guys outlined and they're not getting the ball for it every season. I mean, I don't, maybe it does really all fall in the quarterback. And this is just the creative way of explaining its way around it. What did you take away from the question you asked O.C. Tim Harris Jr. I think it was his most polite way of saying the quarterback is the problem. That's, that was the way I read it. Maybe I'm misreading it. Maybe he's being completely truthful. But he made a point twice of saying, yeah, we're getting open. We were winning outside and we're not, you know, there were times during the game where they won their routes and we're open. And also, very good point. Doose doesn't need a lot of space. If it's one on one, he's open. Throw it to him. And they tried it twice. Once he was actually by the guy, it's not a good throw, but Doose could have caught it. It's a nice play about the DB to fight through it, but doose, all American make that catch in the in zone. And then the other one, he drew a, a DPI throw him the ball. But yeah, the fact that he
brought up that they won some routes and they didn't see it and that his eyes because of the, because of the past rush sometimes went down, but sometimes even when there was a good pocket, his eyes went down and he was looking to run. Yeah, they don't, he's just not, he's not seeing it. And I was kind of worried about it. I said it. I don't remember. I'm not one of these guys that passed themselves on the back a lot. I know you guys are laughing at that. But I didn't like what I saw against New Mexico State and I said as much. I wasn't all that impressive when I saw for a match in the passing game. Didn't look like you saw it real quick. And then that was obvious against SMU. There are, you know, most, most people on earth don't see it quick. They just don't. They can have all the arm child you want. You don't see it. We don't know if Marshall's the answer of spares the answer through eight quarters to me. And the way the OC talks about him. It's obvious Ashen Daniels is the reason that Ducin Danzy aren't getting the ball. They are open. They're winning their routes. There are plays to be made down field and they are not making them. And the
calculus you have to have now is if you take Ashen Daniels out at quarterback and I know we're going to talk about this and replace him with Malachi Marshall, let's say because he's been the second team quarterback in warmups. That's all we're going by. He is not going to be the running threat. I don't think that Ashen Daniels is. And what does that do to the running game? Because right now your average and you're run for 200 yards and back to back games. That's good. That's going to be whittled down a lot. If you don't have a running quarterback in the element. And I mean Ashen ran for 70 himself, but also just the element of him back there. The is going to help you run. If you take that away, you're going to be giving up some rushing yards. What are you going to gain in the passing game? If anything. And that's what they have to figure out. Probably I would say in halftime of the Alabama game is I think when they start deciding what they're going to do with the rest of this season, unless Ashen looks worlds better and throws with much more conviction in the in the first two quarters in Tuscaloosa. Yeah, man. Slide fly man. Let it rip. What are you waiting for?
I know you don't want to pat yourself on the shoulder or the back or whatever, Cory, but I'm going to make you do some quick math here. Can you add up? Okay. How many yards, Krohmaw and Samuel Singleton ran for? Combined 140. Okay. On the over under. On the over under, we had a prop for combined rushing yards from Usman, Usman and Sam Singleton. Do you know what the line that you set was? I have no idea. 140 and a half. I mean, come on. That's what I do. How do we know? That's why I built, that's why I'm living in this big house. It's like Vegas. That's how they build all those huge casinos because they're just so smart. I'm sure I crushed all of them too, right? All of our overunders were on point. Yeah, that's what we do, man. That's what we do. All right, it is the renegade express mail back. This is part one of what's going to be a two part program, if you will. So do Scott, do Scott negative 12 yards for that last play where he threw a backwards?
I just closed the tab out, but yeah, that's what it had him for it had him for minus 12. That's interesting. I said, the Daniels got all those yards. I think Daniels got all those yards. No, the place still went for positive yards. Yeah. So I think Daniels got up to the point that he threw it backwards and then Duce had to, I had to wear the fumble. So interesting. I don't know, I don't know how that works. Yeah. So they finished with 199 rushing yards. So if you take that away, if Duce had just fallen down and cradled it, they finished with 211, which I mean, I love that play. I wish they'd run it all the time. It always works. Just throw it backwards. Willie Milley looked like they practiced that a lot. It was just about ready to bust. Just a bad break. That was crazy. They let Ash and run across midfield. What are they doing? We got this figured out, which is actually probably smart, right? Like condense the field. Because it's probably easier to nip it in the bud when there's only 35 yards left that, but I don't know, that price makes sense, either. Anyhow, I don't know. Real quick, real quick. I think I brought this up. I can't
remember if I ever heard a real response. Why do you have all those offensive linemen on the field for that play? Why aren't they all running backs on receivers? Why? Like you're going to be laterally get back anyway. They're not blocking anyone. Why in the world is that not wisener, Lopez, whoever, Kelsey, whoever, all your tight ends, it should be tight ends running backs on receivers on the field, not a single lineman. And then you got at least in athletes going to end up with the ball. How many times do we see these flip backs where the poor tackle picks it up and tries to, and he just falls down and looks like a mess. Like get put, put athletes on the field for that final play. I don't think there's a rule against it, but I could be wrong. Maybe we can ask Mike that on Thursday. I'm going to ask Chad GBT right now. You go ahead, Aslan. PJ Nozel nine wake up considering SMU was only held to less than 27 points twice in 2025. Can we really say that the defense had a bad performance? Look at their game against Miami's defense last year. Do you honestly not believe that if we had a quarterback who also could
apply game pressure to them, it completely changes the entirety of the football game. Kevin Jennings made Rubin Bane look bad a few times too. All right, what up Tony's burner? That's an interesting way to look at it. I mean, to say they had it, how can you, how can you, how can you not believe they had a bad performance? I know you can look at the only allowed 27 points against an offensive average, whatever last year. I mean, I was their first game on the road, two hour delay, and they torched you for a huge play after a huge play. And yeah, you had the four turnovers, which helped keep it to like a reasonable margin. But again, in a missfield goal, missfield goal, you forced one punt. You have no three inouts. There was nothing, there was nothing redeeming about that defensive effort, except I did think they played physical when they actually were near the ball carrier. And I did think, you know, for the most part, I thought they were pretty good against the run again. That was okay. They weren't great by any
stretch, but they were decent. But it doesn't matter what he's taking. So bad defending on the back end. Like I almost hate because you're right. Like it, the rushing defenses actually has been pretty decent. Now, great new Mexico state. If we want to talk about 2025, they were one of the worst rushing off fences in the country, Lazarus. So how good of a rushing attack were they? But they were completely stymied. And as I mean, really didn't get loose all that much running the balls, but it's hard to celebrate that when you're back into the defense. It's just so porous. I mean, just terrible. Yeah. Again, it was what's. It's a weird, it's a weird schedule. It's a weird schedule. You didn't like what you saw against New Mexico state. Then you might have just faced. You might have just faced the best quarterback you're going to see all season. And maybe the best offense we don't know. It's early September. I know what's coming down the pike. But other than Miami, I don't know that you're going to face a quarterback. Like, in fact, I know you aren't, right? There's nobody else on the schedule that's like, that's like Jennings unless that Louisville kid ends up being awesome. He certainly looked good in the second half. But I don't think that's
against that wasn't against a very good defense either. So it's, it's tough. And then you're going to go to Alabama and face the fastest quarterback in a sea all season who's going to run around. And it's like, okay, when do you finally get to judge what this defense is or isn't? And it's going to be when they're all getting fired when those whole staff is getting fired probably. It's like, this is the year you could have used last year's schedule. You know, you could have used some two nuts that Malachi Marshall could be playing these next two weeks against East Texas A&M in whoever else, Kent State, as opposed to, well, you ain't going to play against Alabama. And then you come home and you play Central Arkansas great, but you're one and two and people have given up. But yeah, it's fair to point out the points. Like, then to the day, what matters is the points. In SMU's going to score more than 27. They got 11 more games left. I would assume 10 of them. They're going to score at least 30 points. So in that regard, you did fine. But it was 580 yards. He threw for 430. They were
815 on third down. They gave you a couple easy turnovers. You also went and took a couple, which is fine, but they gave you a couple and you couldn't get off the field because you can never get off the field. And that's always that's always problematic. But yes, me personally, what worries me more than what we saw on defense is what we haven't seen on offense. I think that's a bigger problem against SMU because real quick, as long as I know, I'm so long-winded. I don't understand. I don't even feel well. We know SMU's defense. We know SMU's offense is going to be good, right? Like maybe elite, but we know they're good. We know that quarterback is special. We know this is a good offensive play collar or really good offensive play collar elite. We have no idea about the SMU defense. I'm going to assume the SMU defense is the worst part of that team. By a pretty substantial margin, we'll see. I could be wrong. It was their first game. I'm going to assume that. And so it was your offense that was supposed to exploit their weakness and your offense suck for
most of the game. That's the problem. Sorry. I keep using that word every way. By the way, I looked up chat GBT. Aslan. There is no, you can't have 11 skill players on the field. It's a lot. You tell them, yeah, yeah, according to chat GBT. So why in the world, you can have why's there? Snap it. I guess you just more receiver, but who cares? You're not throwing the ball anyway. Well, you're I may be just assuming that they're going to get completely blown up and you're only going to have 1.2 seconds to complete a forward pass and then, you know, but you're kind of, you're they're all short passes anyway, because the corners are playing 50 yards off. And then you're just going to be running around lateral and anyway, that's how they all end up. I just, it doesn't make sense to you have six guys on the field that can run if they get a if they get a lane can maybe score six. Well, why not have 11 and just take your chances? That's all. But why is there can get on the field? Or since you're saying this, let's go to this question. That's not all that serious, but we love them. Our guy marked down in April's M Adam CZ. We know it's
coming at BAM, especially if they run the same players out there at the same scheme. If Mike and Tony were somehow unavailable to coach and Tuscaloosa for whatever reason and you two were given the nod for that game. Who would be the head coach? Who'd be the OC? Who'd be the DC? And what personnel and scheme changes would you make and why? So we know that Corey would just run out. I don't just the skill unit for, yeah. For the last play of the game for the Hail Mary. I'd run it out for every play. I'd run it out for every play. He's all offensive alignment. Yeah, just slow him down a little bit. Probably course and you already will get him head coach. Would you rather be the OC or the DC? I'd rather be the OC. I feel I would hate to be a defensive coordinator in this day and age where everybody can do anything. Quarterbacks can run and your offensive linemen can run down field and you know, break the rules and not get flagged for it. I'd hate to be the DC, but I don't know. Maybe I got a little more vinegar in me. I could yell the guys a little bit more as the DC. I could kind of be the the Mickey to your Bobby. You're a little more charming. I think normally I'd rather be the OC, but for this particular team, I think I'd rather be the DC. And I'd just be like,
guys, I just I don't trust what's going on in the passing game at all. And I don't know there's a ton of talent at that in that position room. It wouldn't appear. At least talent that's ready to contribute. So yeah, I think I'd rather be the DC and just tell guys, look, man, here's your part of the field. Here's your part of the field. We're going to keep it really simple. You don't move from here. I don't care if there's nobody on this side of the field that probably means somebody's coming from the other side of the field to this area. Do not vacate it. Do not vacate this swath of grass. You've got this 20 yard radius. This is all you. I don't I literally, if you see the quarter back take off, let him run right by you. You do not leave this swath of grass until you get it in grain to them. And we're going to lose either way. At least I'd keep it simple. I'd like to see on a serious note. I'd like to see some more roll outs with Ash and I feel like a lot of what he did to Auburn that I saw in some of the clips I was able to watch. Like a lot of things were done
with him rolling out. And I don't know if that was to cut the field in half, give him less options, and then you might be a little quicker on the trigger. But I think it also. Did you hear Tim Harris? Did you watch that press conference that did not entirely come on, Aslan? Where are you? He got what? That's our OC, man. That's our OC. He talked about how early on Daniels was throwing the ball okay because they were doing the quick passing. Yeah. Yeah. I saw that. I heard it. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, because that's what he did at Auburn. When you watch those Auburn games the last two, he wasn't just scanning the field and standing in the pocket. It was a lot of quick passes. Then they went away from it. Yeah. What for? Maybe that's anything adjusting. I don't know. Yeah. Right. Sure. That's what it was. Coaches are allowed to do that. Yeah. I guess that's a one refreshing thing if we want to call that in this day and age with the the transfer portal where you don't have all these young guys. And you're like, well, you know, we'll take our lumps with these guys. And then when they get
some snaps, they'll be good in a year or two. Because I don't think there's really any other than quarterback. I don't know what other personnel changes you would want to make. Maybe you want to shift some of the stuff, shake it up on the offensive line, roll with bowling the whole time, put keep apps at tackle. I mean, they they try that for a significant part of the game. They had some more success in the second half. And maybe that's something that could happen. Maybe some more chemistry with that particular five on the offensive line. Maybe you're on the ball a little bit better. And that creates a little bit, you know, more time and and Ash and feels a little bit more comfortable. But defensively, I don't know who I wish Kevin win would play like the beast. He was recruited to be, but he really hasn't. So and those guys in the secondary. I mean, listen, Max Redmond was getting burned. Antonio Cromardi Jr. was getting some burn. Charles Lester. I don't know if anybody's really excited to see those guys play over Ashland or, you know, Jabril or Makai or Ceeja Richard. So I mean, they are, I mean, they're maximizing the roster. But it hasn't
looked that great. Let's get it back to the offense. Lots of questions about Mike Norvell and what's going on? Cory grumpy BK guys nice, finally meeting you in person at the pickle pass. Yeah, we did. We did. He's got a very nice. He's not nice. Is he? No, he's not. He's not grumpy. He's not nice. He's very very nice. Yeah. Yeah. Norvell has historically been a good play collar and he has been near exceptional at planning for big opening games. Yeah. I mean, other than 2020, right? I mean, 21 against Notre Dame. They look solid. 22. They look decent against LSU. 23. Obviously, they're great against LSU. That opening drive against Georgia Tech. They'll, they'll write poems about it. Alabama last year. Yeah. Yeah. Yet Monday night was the most vanilla and stubborn offensive play calling. I've ever seen in the power for. Does he not trust Ashland to throw or is he legit daring the administration
to fire him? By the way, we've got two other questions asking that. And I think seriously, Cory, like is he daring them to fire him? It truly seems like play calling malpractice. It has been questioning if he just wants to get it all over with already. I've seen plenty of losses in person, but I legit thought to myself as we left the stadium at 12 30 in the morning, do I really want to come back and watch something like this ever again? Is it worth it? Yeah. That's fair. I mean, look, I don't think you're up to worry about it for too much longer anyway unless there's a big turnaround. I think it goes back to the quarterback. But then that goes back to you, man. That goes back to your program. What if this is the best you can do with the quarterback position that what we saw on Monday night? Why is Kevin Sparry here? Is clearly another miss, right? Like if he can't even beat this kid out and no offense, Ashton, I know Ashton gives you a running threat and you didn't run the ball for 200 yards. That's great, especially if we were living in 1977. But when you throw for 125 yards and your receivers catch six ball,
your leading receiver after two games is Sam Singleton was six for 94 really six for 94. He's your leading receiver in catches and yardage 94 yards and it's a running back. So when you're through that after two games when the when your offense played the whole game, you've got real problems and that's on the head coach. He does not clearly know how to evaluate the position, teach it, coach it, develop it, none of it. If Jordan Travis and state at Louisville, Mike Norville would have been fired in the middle of 2022. Jordan Travis gave him a reprieve and a whole bunch of money. But and put, you know, at the end of the day, it was his my hot take. Jordan Travis was actually bad for Florida State football because he sat out with you with Mike Norville for the for all this money. No, but look, look, man, I was about to add it up and it's not going, it's going to take too long. But I'm going to guess how many games is Mike Norville won
against real competition where Jordan Travis wasn't his quarterback. You know, and that that would include the win over Louisville. Look, man, I know it was your third string quarterback against Louisville. That was an embarrassment too. scored one touchdown. You scored 10 points and it was on, you had 100 something yards of total offense. Yuck. And it was because of a wildcat. So I think where I'm to the point now where, although he was very good at Memphis and developed some really good offenses, they scored a lot. Since he's been in the ACC and going up against better players and better coaching, he is an average offensive coordinator that looked into Jordan Travis. And I would dare say he's probably below average from what I've seen these first two weeks going back all the way to, well, his whole career, but I was hoping it would look different in 2026. We can't blame this on DJU. We can't blame it on Brock or Kromenhawk. This is a Norville problem. His quarterbacks never
play with confidence. He's had nine guys take snaps here from Chubba Purdy to James Blackman and everybody in the to Castle on Oson and Daniels. None of them play with confidence. None of them except for one. That's a that's the common denominator. His offense, he cannot develop or utilize quarterbacks and he doesn't teach a well and they never play with confidence. Other than that, though, it's been a great run. I mean, with Jordan Travis be the greatest college quarterback of all time if you didn't have Mike Norville holding him back. Even better question. What he done? What would he have done it? S M U? You're right. Yeah. Um, rise or mic, do you think there's a chance that Mike Norville is feeling the pressure and is purposely trying to get fired? Maybe he wants some quality family time. I mean, he used to be so much better than what we've seen the last few years. And if you were trying to get fired, could you come up with a better way to get it done and still walk away with all the money? Why wouldn't you open the playbook and allow Daniels to throw the ball around? Imagine how many yards, Krohmau would have had if there was been any
threat of a passing game. Norville was trying to win a race with a monster struck when he had a couple of Ferraris in the garage. Yeah. I think, look, I think a lot of this is legitimate RPO in in Norville's never going to tell us because it's hard to get any real answers out of him when it comes to failures. Um, but I think a lot of it is an RPO where the quarterback isn't reading it correctly. You know, I don't know what percentage of their plays there is a real pass option, but it's more than zero. So a lot of those second and four plays, I think they, they, they, they do have the ability to check to a pass. That's part of the playbook in everybody's playbook in 2026. And in Mike Norville's playbook, you do have the ability to check to a pass if you like the look. This quarterback isn't doing it. So we can say he, so he ran, they ran the ball all those times on second and four, um, or, you know, third and three, whatever they were doing where they'd run the ball at times. But that doesn't mean it was a call run like, hey, just hand the ball off to Chrome all. It is a read with the quarterback where he's deciding, okay, am I going to give it to
Chrome all? If I'm going to keep it myself, am I going to take a step back and throw it to do? You're putting all that on Daniels's plate. Doesn't seem like he can handle it. Also, as I recalled that, as I reported out on headlines, you are allowed to just call the pass play and take it out of his hands completely. So in that, absolutely enough of the runs on second and six. You, because, mainly because, Aslan, one of the odds you're going to pick up a second and six on an off tackle run with even with Chrome all fighting through four tacklers. It's going to be third down and you're horrible at third down. So why keep giving yourself third down? Try to get a big play on second down, especially after you've hit a seven yard run on first down or second and five. That's manageable. That opens up the playbook. But yeah, not for Nerville. I think it all goes back to him not trusting the quarterback at all to throw the ball down field, which wonder, you wonder how, why he's the quarterback them. Yeah. No, man. What if you take shots on second and mid, you know, second and man, dual second and six and you try to take a shot to get 15, 20, like a
chunk and you don't then it's third and six and then it's lights out. You're punting anyway. You pun on third and three. It doesn't matter. It's not like your crush and short yardage, but you also, you also can hit a 70 yard touchdown. Like that's what Dan Zintou's throwing a football team for for the time for it's hard to do it on third and 12. Like they're not going to be open on third and 12 much. They're going to be they're going to be especially that was something I did get to see from the press box couldn't watch any replays or breathe. But on third and long, third and five or more, they always, always rotated coverage over to zero always. First down, second down, not so much. Feels like that's when you would want to take your shot, but they did. There's that other question. Glenn IMS or maybe Glen IMS 0311. Yes, some new folks on the ponies. They've been around since 2019 only their 13th ever post. Okay. All right. Spread them out. Spread them out. Do you all think Mike Norvels done with FSU? More than it is done with him has all this just been an attempt to get the buy out right
off into the sunset or did getting getting left out of the playoffs break him and once behind the eight ball, he could never pull out of this nose dive. Call me crazy, but it seems to me that someone who has done as well as him would have to try to be this mediocre. Go know. The only thing I will say, he's not he's not tanking everybody. He desperately wanted to fix this thing. I mean, he really did. He was he was pissed off with how seemingly everybody turned their back on him after the 2024 debacle and he was determined to turn it around, proved everybody that this was going to be a quick fix and that he still had it and man, he exhausted every option he could. I don't know. What would he get? What could he have done after Gus left him in February? I don't know who else he could have got to try to run the offense. I mean, that's kind of where he was the only option he was left with. But in that Q and A or that question and response from Andy Staples after the game court, when he was asked about the booze, you know, he did say this is a,
you know, it's this is a special place. It's a special program. You didn't say anything about like this is a special place with special fans. I do think I do think he takes a lot of that to heart. He obviously was very active on social media when they were winning football games and now he is no longer active on social media. He was very, he was very candid about having practice open to the media and was fine with that as they kind of worked through some of their lumps early on and then, you know, we were there to chronicle 20, whatever 19 straight victories. But then he pulled back from that after, you know, he felt maybe he got a little bit burnt on thing. So I do, he's yeah, I mean, he's obviously like emotionally affected by all this, but he's still trying like hell. He's got pride. Many of his want to go out there and get humiliated week after week, year after year. So, but yeah, he's not going to quit. He's not going to make it easy on us. I don't think, you know, I think Jeff brought up on headlines with you guys. Maybe there's some chance they do like some sort of negotiated buyout like, hey, man, I'm done. Like I just, I, this is literally killing me. I mean, we're probably taking years off of his life. All these one
possession losses. But I don't think Jimmy Sexton's going to say, sure, take 65% of the buyout and just get it over with now and walk away. No, he's going to be like, no, man, they owe you all 85% if they fire you without call is that's what we're going to do. Yeah, and I don't, I think in his head, I look, I just criticized them for the last, well, I've criticized them for the last couple of years at this point, but he does care about the players and he would not, I can't imagine a scenario where he would just want to quit on the kids. I quit kids. Sorry, I'm acting like they're elementary. They're all, they're all paid athletes now. Quit on his pro players. But I don't think you'd want to quit on that. He does, he's striking with someone that would just like all that stuff he preaches while it falls on deaf ears in the fan base. And maybe it does in the, that beautiful facility too. He believes it. That is not a stick. That is who he is. And it would be, it would be the antithesis of who he is at his core to just turn tail and run. He believes right
now in his heart of hearts. I think that he's going to turn it around this season. And they're going to end up being good. I think he's wrong. I'm very close to saying I know he's wrong, but I think he's wrong. But he would not, he, that, it's just not in his makeup to be like fire me, fire me. Go ahead. I'm going to, I'm going to, no, man, he cares, he cares a lot. He really does. Whether he cares about Florida State, I don't care. He cares about those players in that locker room. And I would be shocked if he either quit, unless it just like he quit because the booze were so, he didn't want to do it to the players anymore. But he's definitely wouldn't, he's too competitive. I know that's laughable with the way they always lose. But he's too competitive to just throw in the towel and, you know, do you think you'll become competitive? Do you think, do you think you'll become competitive at all this year, Corey? What? How? What about what? Like literally, man, he is
for a dabbo. He pulls a dabbo and we ask him a question is like, did you play football? Do you know that we get, you know, I can't even imagine not that this is a challenge, Mike. But, but I can't even imagine my reaction if he did something like that to me. You know what I mean? Not that I would challenge him to a fight or even be confrontational with him. But if he, if because he's challenging the fans in unlike dabbo, who's stuffed that trophy case with some things, he's got one ACC championship and maybe on his way to his fifth losing season in seven games, he can't, he knows he's smart enough to know that he can't be confrontational, that he's gotten, I'm more popular than him. So everybody would take my side right now. I'm not saying I'm popular, but right now my popularity is through the roof compared to his of my favorability index or whatever they call it. Like more people like me right now than they like Mike Norbell. But that goes for most everybody in the city of Tallahassee. So no, I can't imagine he would be confrontational
because look, man, at the end of the day, in their last 22 real games, I know Ira hates when I do this, but I don't give a talk. They're, they're four and 18 in their last 22 real game against real teams. And so no, no, the, the, the non buy games where you paid people to come get their power for games. They said power for games, right? They're, they're well, Memphis, does that because they lost the Memphis, but, but they're four and 18 and their last 22 games. Obviously three and 14 and the ACC is a joke, but four and 18 is, is, you know, well, I guess it's about the same. So anyway, it's, no, he can't, he can't be combative. There'd be no, there'd be no point in it. There'd be no upside to it for him. Paulie market home to prediction markets. It's unlike a sports book. We don't have the house. That's totally free. Everybody, we're going to build a combo core. Let's, let's build a combo. We're going to say Alabama's going to win. I think Alabama is going to cover. Okay. And I think team, let's go to a full game team told, I think Florida State's going to score less than 27 points. I think Alabama's going to score more than 32 points. So all those, I mean, some might say a little bit risque, risque. I mean, you'll double your money right there. 1.01 time payout with a four market combo. said Mike had to turn over play calling and that running it back in 2025 would be a disaster. We can debate whether Gus was the right choice, but most agreed the decision to give it up was the right move. After Gus left the sentiment surprisingly shifted that Mike taking back play calling duties was in fact a good thing and net positive for the program. My question is after watching the abomination of 2024 and adamantly saying he should give it up going into 2025, why did we think he should do it again in 2026? And if we're being honest, was it realistic to expect better this year, given what we've seen, love the show, go knows. That's another name, Waterdale, no, it's a 2022 five posts ever. I like the lurkers, the lurkers, it's a go. I I would fight back a little in that. I don't remember thinking absolutely, you have to, you have to bring in another play caller. I thought 2024 was so bad, so bad, but I blamed it on
the personnel more than the guy calling plays. You know what I mean? Like in that instance, I'm like, okay, get you bring somebody and that's fine, but there was so many problems with that personnel. What was going to he fired Alex Atkins and we think he was just going to replace an O line coach with an O line coach like he wasn't going to have an OC. We had all names as a hot board candidate. Brennan Marion, like all these other dudes, like maybe Dan Mullin would want to come be an OC as he gets ready to try to be like, I feel like it was it was looked upon as though like there was no possible way. But again, maybe speaking for yourself, Corey, you didn't think maybe it was that I could be wrong. Maybe I was adamant. I don't I don't remember thinking Norvell's play calling is the problem. I don't remember thinking that I could have. I'm sure I said it. I know that offense. We thought Monday night was bad to watch that offense of 2024. We all lost our lost years of our life watching that thing. It was unbelievable how bad it was. So in that regard, yeah, that's fine. I didn't have a problem with it.
I think, but and that's fine. So I might have actually said that like, yeah, bring in somebody else, blow it up. Clearly, that's not working. And you know, I looked at the stats yesterday because I was doing something on SMU. Florida State had the eighth ranked offense in the country last year. Isn't that insane? Wait, wait, they went from SMU, you mean? No, Florida State at the end of the year, yards per game were top 10 in the country. It's insane. Oh, man, come on. They had 800 in two games. That's the problem. They had four games. It was like, it was like SMU's offense the other night. You know, they had, they had some big plays. Yeah, look at that. There were six in the sixth and total offense. They went from what 129 to sixth. Now it's because the way it looked on the road. I think, but anyway, so it worked out in that regard. It wasn't as bad as certainly wasn't as bad as this one looks to be too. But the real contention I have with that question is I didn't think that Mike Norville taking back over play calling duties was necessarily the best solution.
I thought it was the only solution to come to a conclusion about his tenure. You know what I mean? Like he wanted it back. He got to, he gets to go out on his own terms. And it looks by all means that he's about to go out, but he gets to go out in his own terms because I do think he got last year was not Mike Norbell. He didn't look like the guy we known. He wasn't involved in anything on the side. Leonard and pounded his chest. It seemed to, I don't know, just take some of his powers away. But at this point, who cares what his powers are? They don't have, he doesn't have any. And, and I was going to say this, this leads me into what I just looked up is I just looked it up as long. You're not going to like this. So in games that Jordan Travis has started for Florida State are played the majority of the game. So like the Jacksonville State game of not the one they lost of the 2020 season where Roda Maker started and threw a pick six. Mike Norbell's record in games where Jordan Travis is the primary quarterback is 29 and 9.
And like five or you know, obviously, what six of those losses were those first two seasons, but they were competitive. That includes overtime lost another name, a loss at death Valley to Clemson, games like that 29 and 9. The games Jordan Travis has not been the primary quarterback, 10 and 26. And four of those wins are New Mexico State, Kent State, East Texas A&M Charleston Southern. So against real teams, we can take Jacksonville State out there because they lost him one time. Mike Norbell against real football teams without Jordan Travis's his quarterback is 6 and 25. 6 and 25. That's a 24% winning percentage for you math heads out there. It's a fair question about the, but I just want to get that out there that that's Jordan Travis saved this guy his job. He is his offense has been anemic in every situation with every other quarterback except, I don't even 2025 does not even count like that wasn't his offense. I should even take that away.
You should absolutely. Yeah, those that wasn't him. Yeah, that's right. So what would it be? So yeah, you take those away. That's what what wins does he have with Jordan Travis not as his quarterback against real teams. Low Cal Cal Louisville and Florida. In seven years his three wins where Jordan Travis wasn't the quarterback over real teams. So I'm not again, not Charleston Southern, not New Mexico State, not East Texas A&M, but I didn't count anyway is Cal. Is that right? Yeah, because McKinsey Milton never won a game. Roda maker won at Florida. Thanks to the defense. Brought Glenn won the game at Louisville. All right, Charlotte for the CZ championship, they scored one touchdown. So that's unbelievable. That's unbelievable. That's unbelievable. Anyway, so there you go. That's the coach. So yes, fair question, especially now that I just thought about that. Absolutely, we should have been petrified that Mike Norvell was going back to be the offensive coordinator.
It's a fair point. I was much more on board with it, not because I thought the offense would be better. I just thought it was like, okay, it makes it his program again. But at this point, I don't care anymore anyway about it being his program or his offense because his offense, unless it turns it around somehow some way very quickly looks like it's going to be another mediocre one. This is not a defense of what's going on right now and where we're at right now. But I just like, I don't know what the other option would have been with the way that the Gus left so abruptly. And it's a sinking ship, right? Like who's going to come that's an up and coming offensive coordinator that's going to come here for one year, which is what it looked like, right? And Ashen, they can't bring in their own quarterback. They're sorry, they're not stuck. They are coaching Ashen, Daniels, Kevin Sparry and Malachi Marshall who won't get here to July. That's not a great selling point for an offensive coordinator that's trying to climb a ladder. He's not going to leave
a good position to come coach at this program where there is a good chance and he knew it back in January or he had a known it in February, which is when Malzahn quit. There's a good chance he wouldn't last until Thanksgiving the way this program is currently. It is a fair criticism, though, of the question that the offense was so horrendous in 2024 that we thought that just like one year, and him kind of being put in time out for 2025 and getting his toy taken away from him and not being able to call the offense was going to reinvigorate him. And he was going to be the guy going down with his ship. He was going to be able to take all accountability. He can make all the decisions you want to have all the latitude back. Yeah, I mean, it's just one of those kind of off-season things when you're, you know, I'm sure there was points where like this is not a good idea, but then there was probably points where we're trying to look at it through a different prison and telling ourselves, you know, hey, he didn't know what to do last year. He was, you're coaching almost a man down because he wasn't calling plays. He wasn't designing plays.
You know, he was just simply being like your emotional leader. And he's a guy that his emotions are on tilt as soon as the game is tight in the third, fourth quarter. So that's not the greatest mask got to be able to kind of lean on. I just can't believe that stat. Like especially after I looked up that stat, that is a perfectly legitimate question. I don't, I don't really have an issue with any of it. It is unbelievable. If you look at his stats without Jordan Travis, which I don't, do people do that? Like I'm sure Jimbo's without James, without your best player, your best quarter back, they're going to be worse. But his results are so endemic without Jordan Travis. And guess what, Jordan Travis isn't on this team. I can't, it's unbelievable. They blow, they won three games with none against or against FBS opponents with Jordan Travis, when Jordan Travis isn't their quarter back in a Mike Norvel offense. And yeah, they were a game where they scored 24 points, 10 points,
and 14 points. So 48 points in the games they won with Jordan Travis, not the quarterback, they averaged 16 points again. That's unreal. That's unreal. Anyway, I like him at Tuscaloosa. All that to say, I like him. I don't think Alabama knows what's coming. I don't think Alabama knows what's coming. Is Jordan Travis Tom Brady and Mike Norvel Bell check? No, because he even, no, I'm kidding. It's joke. It's joke. Next question. Next question. Next question. Oh, I've got two of these tabs open, I think now. So I don't even know where my correct place is. There it is. Bradley Moss, wake up. It's third down. Which means our offense again, the first down. It's an automatic first down for our opponent. Two questions. Why do we always run it on second down? I'd love to see a play chart going back the past few years on how many times we have run it on second down versus passing it. Also,
the defense is atrocious. Is the scheme that bad or do we just not have the talent or both? Real quick, Corey, I was doing some fast research while you were doing mental math about Mike and how poorly he's been without Jordan Travis. So this don't quote me, but I think this is a fairly decent jumping off point for at least the first part of his question. First half, I counted nine instances where florist eight had second down. I didn't see if it was second and long. I didn't have the time to do that. But there's nine times Florida state face second down in the first half. They ran it five times. So they passed for the other four. I mean, so it's not I mean, second half maybe became a little bit skewed, but I really wish I really wish you would done it for the second half. And I'm going to go ahead and rip off your thoughts on the defensive scheme or the talent being the problem. I'll say I'll say I knew on the. But I was going to explain the reason I would have liked it is because that's when the booze were coming, those second down runs in the
second half. So I do wonder I would be interested to know how often they ran the ball on second down. And also give us those yardage as long give us those yardage numbers while you're at it. I'll I'll riff on what I'll riff on the defense. Yeah, I do think there's there's a personnel issue a little bit up front. Like I think it's been made clear that you're not special there upfront necessarily. But I think it's a scheme thing. I think it's and I don't even know if it's a scheme thing. I think it's a coaching coordinating issue. Not in that Tony white is an idiot. Not in that Tony white hasn't proven he can coach at this level and put together good defense as he has in the big 10. It's because they whatever his message is is not being received. They are not on the same page. I don't know if it has to do with like guys that don't normally play playing. Rotating as much as he had to and the set our has in the secondary. Max Redman was playing a lot in that game. And I sounded like he was on the scout team during the week. So that's an issue
that you're playing guys that maybe didn't necessarily play it on playing. But yeah, I think it's I think it's a schematic issue. Not that the scheme is horrible. These players aren't figuring it out. The players aren't running it well, which is a coaching problem. It needs to be figured out. How was that, Aslan? That crush it for you? Perfect. Okay. So there was 11 instances in the second half of Florida State facing a second down. I didn't get the yardage. Sorry, Corey. That's fine. So 11. Do you want to guess how many times they they ran for it of those 11 times? I would guess 12, 15. It seemed like every single time. That was a joke. I would say eight. I said 12, right? 12 total. Did you say 11? 12. It was 12. I'm sorry. My math's terrible. No, wait. I would say eight. 11. 11. I'm sorry. I should believe myself the first time. I get nervous with math live, Corey. Yeah. Yeah. They passed for one time until the last drive to last two
drives of the game. So they they ran the ball eight times. And remember that set the second when it was 24, 24 after the interception by by Barker, that second down play was a screen pass. Basically, with Lannond Thomas had it deflect with his left hand on a screen pass. That was the pass. So before that, you're saying they only ran it. They only threw it once. Yep. Yep. Correct. So if they're first nine second downs in the second half, it's a lot of numbers. We're throwing out. They ran it on eight of the first nine. Yep. To not great to varying degrees of success. Let's just say. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that's that that's does that show? Is that like the most indicative thing of him not trusting the quarterback? Yeah. But it also it's not even that, man. Like I I almost don't care at this point if you trust your quarterback or not. The man that he throws the ball to your highest price talent. Like we have him here for a reason.
Like I mean, I guess it's like Jay, Justin Jefferson with JJ McCarthy. Like, you know, he just wouldn't throw it. Just throw it to your guy. Trust whatever route he's running, he's going to be open. If you throw a pick at this point, who give throw it to your dude if it's man-to-man coverage? And that was my issue. And I brought up multiple times, but it was obvious, obvious that on a lot of those second downs, it was man-to-man coverage on Duce Robinson, on Dan's. And a couple times it was even press coverage. And you're still running the ball. It's just scared not knowing what you're doing, not trusting offense. In in 2026, it's nuts. It's nuts unless you're army or navy. Coach B, I think he met you at CP Corey. Yeah. Yeah. General, this is a specific passing game question. We'll probably miss my be the last one. I might take another one for today. We'll get there. Everybody's questions. This specific passing game question because it irks me as an offensive coach, specifically a
wide receivers coach. What do we think Mike Darvel's apprehension is to utilizing his players' physical traits in the passing game? For instance, Duce Robinson, Chase Lothon, there's six foot six, throw them fades, especially in the low red zone. Danzy, track athlete, why are we not throwing him posts or nines? Also known as go routes. Also maybe known as a flag route. I think we used to call verticals flag routes. No flies. They were they were flies. I think yeah. Yeah. Box showed me some nice stuff early. I think flag is corner end zone. Sorry. Yeah. Box showed me some nice stuff early in the game versus SMU. We went away from him. Low PES. That slot guy we've desperately needed needs to run speedouts, whip routes, bubble, tunnel screens with actions, obvious limitations. All these are basic football plays that any of the quarterbacks on our roster can execute. Does Mike think he's too good to call basic passing concepts? No. I think Norvell, I think it just goes back to how you started. I think you started the
question with trusting. It's a it's a trust issue. But that's a I don't even trust issue. It's fair, man. I think I think it's somehow almost as Tim Harris this on on Wednesday. And I might ask him again the next time we talk to him if it looks the same like throw the ball deep. Aschandandos is not thrown a deep pass the entire season. What's the longest air yards he's had on a pass like 31 28 the one to dancey down the middle of the field that was 39 yards. That's the longest air throw air ball he's thrown. It doesn't make any sense. It just doesn't make any sense with with with this personnel that you're not because it's not it's not a big read. It's not like you're you have two guys on the outside. There's safeties. You see what the safeties do if they wrote and they're both running. Let's say goes as long let's say the nine. They're both running goes. Well, if the safeties don't back up and angle out towards the towards the sideline.
And they can't get there in time and you know it throw the flip and ball down the field. Just see what happens. You might get a DPI or you might catch it for an 80 yard touchdown. And I know that simplistic. It's like you're playing 1994. Say a football. I get it. It's dumb thing to say. I'm saying in this instance from what I saw the other night. You're not asking your quarterback having to read or trust his eyes. You're just telling him look that you have two really good out guys outside. Let him run down the field and throw it to him. Throw with them the ball. I don't care what you're looking at. Asked and throw them the ball. That's where I'd be right now. That maybe I should be the OC when we take over the team. As long as that's going to be my actually you know what if I was the OC I'd be saying that exact same thing but to Malachi Marshall just because he's got a bigger arm and I'd be like man throw it. We're throwing it deep 15 times 15 times a game. And I mean deep deep like bombs. Bombs away. All right. There you go, Aslan. Read what you found.
Passing depth. So 26% of Ashen Daniels' pass attempts this year have been behind the line of Scrimmage. 28 of them 28% rather have been short distance zero to nine yards in the air. 16% of his passing attempts have been medium depth 10 to 19 air yards. He's thrown eight total passes of 20 or more air yards. He's only completed on two of them. So 16% and 16% deep medium. So yeah, 54 of his passing attempts have been nine or less yards in the air. He is 54% yeah 51 sorry. No 54 54% yes a number sorry 54% yeah of his passing attempts have been nine or less air yards. I mean he's five of eight in the medium stuff which is 62% which is where he needed to live at but his the deep shots which we thought we heard he had good accuracy
on his deep ball has not been the case. It's been a joke. It just has been a joke when you look at the personnel on this team and again it goes back to coaching when you're two best players on offense or we think two of your best players on offense or in Boggs might be a guy too now but our Danzean do is they're your most proven guys coming into the season. Playmakers, most proven playmakers more so than chrome all more so than anybody and you just do not get them involved. You thrown eight and in by the way deep passes is more than 20 yards. More than 30 yards I think you're looking at one attempt one or two attempts more than 30 yards. The whole season through two games through eight quarters but you have 13 passes behind the line of scrimmage in two passes 30 yards down field make that makes sense with the personnel that you have. It's insane. It's insane but hey man what am I what am I trying to convince y'all that Norville might not be the guy. That's my that's my bad I'm not trying to be negative. In the hey they got to
they got to buy a week to figure this all out. They're setting Alabama up looking like they're going to be army and they're going to come out in the air raid and light the tide up for 50 points and 500 yards passing. Oh let's do this one on the way out Corey it's kind of what we've been talking about here in the second part of the show wake up gentlemen summit 2001 says like most I am extremely unhappy with the passing game. Looking at the games from last season appeared asian Daniels was fairly confident throwing the ball down field and he finished the season with some nice passing numbers in a two game sample he looks to have significantly regressed the season in this offense. Do you think he's being told to just quote manage the game or quote don't make mistakes so often that he now just won't throw the ball unless somebody's just wide open. We know that doesn't happen often. If this is the case can the staff coach it back out of him. Let's see where he was passing depth last year Corey flip to that. So again 16% of his passing attempts so far eight
total actual attempts have been 20 or more air yards down the field last year at Auburn I mean 13% so yeah but look at the like he's got more passing yards deep down field than he did our passes deep down field than he did behind the line of scrimmage. That's true. Yeah. Yeah. So it's eight you know it's eight passes of 20 yards this year and and it's about it's not the same sample size because there's more attempts but not a ton more you know he's got 13 passes this year behind the line of scrimmage and eight down the down the field composed of our opposed to 11 behind the line of scrimmage last year for Auburn and 16 down the field and 32 between 10 and 50 as opposed to this year where it's 16 between 10 and 50 and none literally I think I don't think he's thrown a ball 40 yards down field I mean I don't I don't get it it's what it's what doos is here for big play
guy both those guys average over 20 yards of catch this guy won't even throw at 20 yards down field when he completed 30 30% of those deep shots he only completed 25 of them right now I don't remember the other one what was the other one that am I missing is it which was the other one that was because he had a 39 yard at a Dansey against New Mexico State and he had a 29 yard or some other point I don't I don't remember that but yeah it's fine you think they're they shouldn't be that hard to remember he hadn't completed that many of them I don't know maybe was the Dansey went in the middle of the field on on Monday maybe maybe but yeah it's not I mean I don't remember do seven a big one but why would he he's only like the biggest play receiver in the country returning and he's got five catches for 75 yards but yeah I think that might be that's but don't you think that's it's a really good theory that he's he's not he just doesn't want to make mistakes you want to hold on to the ball and you know he's throwing one interception it was a bad one but he's throwing one interception but yeah man you can't it when you're not all that talented a quarterback if if you
don't take any chances you're not you're not gonna do it you know what I mean like you're not gonna be able to move the ball down the field you don't trust what you're seeing anyway and then if you really don't trust what you're seeing because you're worried about turning the ball over so you're always kind of tumbling and looking at the rush or looking down and then rolling to the right and hoping somebody breaks wide open it's not gonna it's not gonna end well he just you know he just doesn't see it it's in but this is not to it's not to you know snipe at action Daniels as I've made very obvious over the last 30 minutes or 45 minutes of this show any quarterback that's played for this guy in Tallahassee not named Jordan Travis has struggled with this they've struggled they're he's they're not good nobody's been good I can't wait because I'm gonna do it probably this week maybe after the Alabama game but I'm gonna look up I'm gonna put together the numbers of every quarterback that's played for Mike Noreville that not named Jordan Travis and let's see what they look like completion percentage touchdowns
interceptions points per game it's gonna be ugly and so action you're not alone man don't blame yourself I don't know what they should have done going back to that question from earlier is whoever was calling plays for Auburn at the end of the last year I know you told me I can't remember who it was whoever their own he was Derek next he should be here he should have come with action Daniels he figured it out somehow he figured that he unlocked that kid to average 400 yards of game look at what we're looking at these last two games kid done have 400 yards total in two games he was averaging 400 yards of game against Alabama and Vanderbilt and then it gets to New Mexico state nest M.U. not exactly the who's who of great defenses he's he threw for what's he thrown for less than 400 yards in two games less than 350 yuck anyway again Alabama is in trouble gang Alabama is in trouble mark my words all the way I don't I don't want to be a coward about it because I'm not in town right now but is that something that we could ask Mike right now it's
you know through you know Ashton played to he started two games last year and seemed to have had things kind of figured out to a certain degree and through two games this year starting things seem a little bit different you know like yeah why does he look so apprehensive he did not look apprehensive yeah yeah it's an absolutely fair question that I can ask are you can ask call in remember when they used to let our guide down in Palm Beach call in for jumbo on pressers yeah Tom D'Angelo yep yeah bring it back I'll do it I'll ask I'll ask for because it's a fair question look this offense is not going to be anything at all if the quarterback play slash passing game is like this so you got to unlock it and figure it out and you've got about seven days to save the season and possibly your career so he needs to be working like hell to figure it out I'm passionate they beat Alabama imagine we're not going to have to imagine it we're going to beat we're going to live it we're going to live it we already live it once we'll live it again all right we are done thanks for listening everybody hit that thumbs up rate review subscribe
