Hey, everybody, it's around the park, the crew could kite today. We're going to talk about utility players and how hard it is. And we're going to talk about that when we come back. Hey, everybody, it's around the park with crew could kite and today's game three of the three game series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Giants, the Giants of one, the first two and Kuype. We are in the era, era of baseball where you have to be a player that can

assume more positions than just one. It used to be when you came up. I mean, in the minor leagues, you played one position. You got the big leagues. You played one position. You didn't really have the Def the fine utility player. Now, it's not uncommon to see a guy be able to play literally six positions or seven. I mean, some guys can even play eight if you I guess to make a catch. But Bob Lillis was the bench coach for Roger Craig. And I learned a lot of baseball from Bob. And he was an infielder and he was in charge of the infielers. That was his his specialty. And then during the game, he would be on the bench and he would be bench coach to Roger. I asked the fleet, which was Bob Lillis's nickname. I said, fleet, when you're hitting ground balls to an infielder, how many do you have to hit before you know he can play? And without hesitation, he said five. One each way, one each way coming in and then one right out of his heart as I can hit it. I want to see his hands. I want to see his move.

So now we're seeing Jonah Cox, who is by nature, an outfielder, and he's a very good outfielder. But we're starting to see him come into the infielder and play second base. What is it that you've seen about his ability to play second base that that interests you and how have you judged him? And what do you look for when you're rating a player making a transition to another position? Like I think most guys that are really good outfielers could play the infield. But the first thing that you have to look at is do they have soft hands? And if you got soft hands to play the outfield, then by all right, you should be a pretty good infielder if you had a chance to work at it. Problem is is you lose a lot of infielers, two outfielers because they're left handed. But you can't tell me that Willie Mays can been a great shortstopper second base. I mean, true. A really terrific athlete can move around and play those other positions.

It's just that back in those days. And you know, I'm specifically talking about the Mays years and the years that we played. Guys weren't really asked to move around at all. And if they did, it was a big story. Oh man. Do you see who's playing short? Ernie Banks has gone from short to first base in front page news of the Chicago Tribune. Remember, in those days, the older guys, they didn't have the D.H. So if they were going to continue to play, they'd probably have to change the position unless you're Cal Ripken. So long-winded answer to your question is, what I'll look for in Jonah Cox. First of all, is what kind of hands does he have? We know he's fast. We know he has quick feet. All those things are great when you play the infield. And the other thing too, years ago, you would have to find out, is he tough to stay in on the double play. He doesn't have to do that anymore. Now he can rely on his arm because nobody at second base is going to touch him when they come in.

So I expect him to, if he wants that position, you know, he could be a really good second baseman, but then he'd have to forget about taking a lot of balls in the outfield too. If you were playing in this generation, would you like to be a utility player? I, you know, if it meant that, that's how I was going to stand in the field absolutely, but I still think it's everybody's goal to play one position and to be in that lineup every day at the same spot. And that's around the park with Kruke Kai. Enjoy this great game. Hey, everybody, Brian Murphy here. Well, summers in the rear view, the kids are back in school and football is in full swing.
