Today's episode of Lockdown NBA Draft with no ceilings.
It's conference tournament time, which means March madness is so close we can taste it.
Why so many prospects need to make some noise to solidify their NBA draft stock?
I'm gonna tell you, let's go.
You are a locked on NBA draft with no ceilings.
Your daily podcast on the future stars of the NBA part of the locked on podcast network.
Your team every day.
Hello everyone.
My name is Tyler Rucker.
Welcome to locked on NBA draft with no ceilings part of the locked on sports network.
Now the number one sports podcast network.
Today's episode is brought to you by five hour energy.
Have your cake and drink it too.
What they cake flavor is back, no fork needed, vanilla, cakey flavor, caffeinated cake and
no sugar.
It's party time order now at fivehourenergy.com or Amazon.
All right, folks, conference tournament underway.
Thank you guys for checking out the channel this week.
The podcast feed has been fantastic on a lot of positive feedback on that.
We've been talking big boards, breaking down some of our rankings and what not.
With conference tournament under play, I wanted to kind of do a little bit of a pulse check
for everyone.
This is a big time of the year, especially for draft fans because this is the time to
really be on full display for NBA executives and be scouts the whole league.
Now there's a full year of evaluation when it comes to scouts and talent evaluators,
but make no mistake.
This is what they're always looking forward to is the conference tournament, March madness,
who can make the most buzz over this next month if you want to put it that way.
This is a really big time of the year and I wanted to kind of talk about some of the
big names that are obviously starting to cook in the right perfect time.
Some other names that I think need to have a really big week to kind of solidify their
draft stock because their buzz might be going in the wrong direction.
I've got one name I want to bring up that I think could be a little bit of a surprise
climber who's been kind of quiet throughout the year.
Let's start off with Mr. AJ DeBanson.
Now we've talked plenty about AJ throughout the year and it's well deserved.
This is someone who is projected to potentially be the number one pick in a class that features
almost three or four candidates that would be a number one pick in other years.
Now those who're just getting caught up, AJ DeBanson, BYU, Darren Peterson, the Kansas
Cameron Booser of Duke and Caleb Wilson at North Carolina, you can make an argument that
if they were not in the same draft class, they would have a real chance of going number
one overall.
AJ has been, all these guys have been tremendous this year, but let's just focus on
AJ right now and we're going to talk about the other plenty throughout future episodes
and we have talked a lot about them now, but you should know the big three because coming
into the year, it was AJ, Darren Peterson and Cameron Booser build as like, hey, this
is the competition to get the number one pick.
With AJ DeBanson, you've sort of see the potential, the upside, the tremendous tools
that just really needed time to develop sharpen and AJ was playing fantastic to start the
year, kind of cool down a little bit, was beaten up on some lower ranked teams, started
a little bit when the competition got tougher, which is expected, then has really started
to look like the number one pick contender that we were all expecting and dreaming of.
On principle, I thought was going to be big for AJ now, look, he's going to go top three.
There's no doubt in my mind about that.
He's probably going to go top two, but how close this race is and how competitive and
good this class is, I think we always see there's guys that, you know, can get the March
bump.
I like to say and I talked about this earlier in the week on my locked on episode where
I was kind of talking about some here's some potential risers that could get the March
bump.
But when it comes to the top guys, you usually don't see like, oh, all of a sudden they're
going to go from three to one, but you could see like teams started to get a little bit
more comfortable with being like, okay, actually, now we have him here.
Now we have him solidified here.
We feel good about it.
So I thought this is going to be a big one for AJ.
I thought he could do a lot of good stuff with a strong conference tournament play followed
by, you know, maybe BYU can win a couple of games and if he plays strong, like perfect,
that's loud endorsement.
So in his last three games, you know, as we're recording this, they just lost a tough
fought game to Houston.
But his last three games, he's averaging 31 points per game, seven rebounds, 3.7 assists,
1.7 steals shooting splits of 52, 35, 88, four turnovers game, which obviously we need
to deliver that.
If you stretch that out to five games, he's still at 27, six and four.
He's been unbelievable.
I think I think AJ is playing some of his best basketball right now and it's, it's in
the most extreme conditions.
And what I mean by that is, look, Richie Saunders goes down for BYU and if you're an NBA
draft fan over the years, you understand how important Richie Saunders has been to
this team.
This is a movement shooter.
This is one of their, you know, veterans on the team, if you want to put it that way.
Yes, he's a little bit older, but this is also a guy that has just been consistent and
this year he was the number two to AJ.
This is a guy that consistently could look to almost kind of swing the momentum of games
with just his offensive production.
AJ went, or excuse me, Richie goes down with an injury.
He's been out the whole rest of the year and now it's kind of been AJ having to really
carry the load offensively and struggle a little bit, but this is also like now teams
are just being like, we're just taking away AJ.
So he's had to balance more than ever of like, okay, I got to know when to get mine,
but I also got to know when to not settle.
There's been some growing pains, but you're seeing every time this year, AJ advances had
some growing pains.
He's figured it out quickly.
He's figured it out and looked completely different like way, way better.
It's the adjustment in moving forward and processing that is remarkably impressive for a player
that just turned 19, I believe a month ago.
That's why Scouts and teams are so excited about his tools because you see how unbelievable
his game is and the special things he could do look like first game of conference tournament
and everyone could be like, hey, it's against kids at stable 40 point or he had 40 points
in nine rebounds on 15 of 21 shooting with three steals and six assists, 49, 6, 3 on 15
of 21.
When AJ is cooking, he's the most dangerous player of this class, I still believe that.
The talent is unbelievable at six, nine, six, nine and a half with his versatility and
still the defense of the upside that I think will be eventually unlocked.
This is why many think he deserves to go number one.
It's been a great showing from him and with so much firepower at the top of this class
with Campbell's or Darren Peterson and Caleb Wilson.
I think evaluators and Scouts, I wouldn't surprise me if this is kind of a last, the last
thing imprint that they're going to feel when they're like, okay, now let's just see if
AJ can kind of do this in a couple, you know, you can pull off a couple of wins in the
big dance and AJ can put forth these type of performances, it's going to go a long way
for him.
All right, we're going to take a quick break and I'm going to tell you why this is now or
never for Tennessee freshman, Nate of men.

All right, folks, welcome back to Lockdown NBA Draft with no ceilings, Tyler Rucker here.
We just talked about AJ DeBanza.
I want to break down Mr. Nate Amit now, okay?
This is a big, big time of the year for a lot of prospects that are trying to create
some buzz.
This is also a big time of the year with some prospects that are trying to put out some
potential fires.
You want to stop the negative train and the buzz, I guess, if you want to put it that
way, from going the wrong direction.
Now, Nate Amit, for everyone getting caught up or if you haven't really done a deep dive
on Nate this year and you're just starting to, Nate's a 6-10 freshman forward that was
build as one of the top prospects in high school.
A lot of people thought, hey, this could be a guy that is going to be in the mix with
the big three.
He's going to make some noise up there.
I wasn't sold on that idea coming into the preseason because I just thought this one
is really, really raw and it's Nate's really young.
He's got some skills.
He's built as a 6-10 floor spacer, which always gets people excited with size and versatility
and talent and skills, but there's a lot of work to be done.
Nate came out of the year and it's kind of the first half of the year really looks like
it was struggle.
I was like, okay, you kind of got to a point where you're like, man, does he need to really
consider maybe going back?
I don't know.
Then Nate hits conference play during the regular season and flip the switch and it was
like, this is who is this guy I've been watching the last couple of months because he's not
right there right now.
He looked awesome.
He was aggressive, assertive, confident, really, really looked good and that's where you
started to be like, okay, there's the lottery pick we've all been waiting for.
That's that version right there.
Then Nate starts to have a couple games where it was like, oh, here we go.
The first half of the year, Nate's kind of trickling back.
You know when you can't shake a bad habit, it was like, that one's coming back like
stay away.
Then he played against Alabama.
He had an injury left that game early.
It was kind of like a knee ankle injury.
I'd been sideline and missed a couple of games.
People were like, okay, fine.
So the buzz with Nate this year has followed the play that I just told you about.
Maybe you could always say it was the opposite.
Early on the year, there was a lot of Nate, they meant believers and all of a sudden it
really cooled down.
People were like, I don't know.
Then you started to see the strong play coming.
You're like, okay, there's the guy we were all expecting.
And now it seems like it's kind of cool to get.
So I think conference play is really big for a lot of guys that are trying to specifically,
if you're trying to be like, hey, this guy was projected in the late second round.
And I'm saying conference tournaments in March Madness, like, hey, these late second round
guys could make some noise to climb up and really solidify themselves as like, oh, they're
going to get drafted or you're talking maybe like the late first round guys that could
be like, hey, okay, now they're going to be in this draft.
If they're not a senior, like, okay, they made enough noise.
They might be going, you know, 17, 18th.
But for guys like this, I think it could really go a long way towards like, okay, you're
not slipping.
You're not going for a tumble potentially like on the year and 30 games, including today,
which we're going to talk about a second Nate's average in 17, six and two on shooting
splits of 41, 34, 78 with two turnovers of game.
But the big one was today.
And I thought that's why he needs to kind of go on a little run here to kind of calm
people down and revamp his talk today against Auburn.
He finished with 27, eight and four with three blocks in his steel, fantastic numbers.
Seven of 15 from the field floor, excuse me.
Four for six from three and nine for 13 from the free throw line with only one turn over.
That's fantastic.
I don't care if you want to say, hey, Auburn isn't that good.
I don't care.
That's a fantastic Nate performance.
Now, Tennessee's hoping to make a little bit of a run.
And what I mean by that is like, you're hoping in one smart man that starts as you're going
to be playing a couple of times at least minimal.
And this is a big opportunity for a lot of these guys that like, hey, you might not be
in the national championship.
But the conference tournament is really important for you to get your best stuff on display.
Consistency, efficiency, being a two way player like the Flash is like, this is all those
evaluators and scouts and front office guys are all here to watch.
Like this is the time of the year where they, some of them feel like they're playing
touch up now.
So I think this is a big, big, big week for Nate.
And I think this is one of these guys that the question is just you're just kind of about,
you know, it's always funny when people want to project someone as an elite shooter.
And midway point in the year, you know, my, my versions of elite shooters aren't guys
that are missing wide open threes by three feet.
And that's not just a couple of times that's happening a lot now Nate to go full big picture
go backwards.
Sorry.
I'm all over the place.
This is how the Nate A meant, you know, experience has been this year.
He was around like six 10 190 out of high school, incredibly thin, a reported plus 17 pounds
waking, what was kind of the hype thing coming into the start of the season.
You know, Tennessee's program, Nate's doing a great job with the physicality.
I got to see him in person and looks fantastic when it comes to the upper body.
I still think there needs some work to be done lower body and stuff, but so you can
argue like, hey, maybe that could do some thing with the shot mechanics early on fine.
That's fine.
But eventually gets a point where like, okay, that one's fizzled out.
We can't use that as just like the excuse or what we're leaning on.
I probably was the biggest Nate A meant doubter the whole year.
If I get the conference play version of Nate A meant that we were talking about, I would
take him top 10, no questions asked because that was fantastic.
And that's a real weapon at six 10 tough.
The problem is as we haven't seen that version enough today looked more like that, but
we need to see it more consistently.
And that's why he's become the most polarizing prospect, I think in this draft class because
you're scared to take him too early.
You're scared to pass that up because it's such a valuable asset at the NBA level as
six 10 floor space or who does a fantastic job of getting to the free throw line.
There's a lot of stuff with his game I'd like to improve, but at some point in this draft,
if he keeps playing the positive way, obviously, I think he's too valuable of a swing because
with time and on our no ceiling steam, Jam Heinz, who is one of our scouts has kind of
been on Nate A meant corner since day one and he said, hey, this has been what he does
his whole basketball journey is every time it slowly comes together and then he figures
it out and it clicks all of a sudden.
He's like, he's been this slow lights come on guy this whole career, but when it does,
it's special.
I'm hoping we get to see that for the rest of the conversation and it's off to a great
start.
All right, let's take one final break.
And then there's a Duke Blue Devil who I think could have the biggest bump of March
madness of any draft prospect will be right back.
This isn't against the lockdown Maverick's podcast.

All right folks welcome back to locked on NBA draft with no ceilings.
Tyler Rucker here we're talking conference tournament guys that can make some buzz in the draft
space and potential risers or guys that need to solidify their stock.
There's a certain Duke blue devil that I think a lot of people haven't been buzzing enough
about this year and it's understandable to some point but I think there's going to be more fans
and NBA front offices than potentially you know draft fans out there because this is the type of
player teams love and I also think this is the type of player that I think NBA teams usually
remember how well in love they are when it comes to March madness.
Let's talk about Isaiah Evans of Duke I said that Evans is a sophomore list around 66 190
thin frame but is a shooter and is a sharp shooter he is the definition of green light can stretch
it from the parking lot hits it from another zip code Isaiah Evans is a bucket he can shoot it
with the best of them this draft classes not having a lot of elite shooters when it comes to like
if you're looking for a guy that just immediately can step in and stretch the floor and give you
hey you run some catching shoot opportunities for them they can all of a sudden you look up
and you're like oh she's already got 12 points the game just started Isaiah Evans is an NBA jam type
of shooter like he can get he's heating up really quick now he was probably going to be early second
round late first last year and it looked like a game that had a way too much stuff to unlock
and when he returned it seemed like the smartest like very smart early on I think a lot of scouts
and evaluators were projecting like hey Isaiah is still got this talent this versatility to unlock
let's see if maybe the defense comes around a little bit more consistently or maybe we can get
some more on ball stuff and more of like a developmental step forward there's flashes early on
in the year where it was like okay the offense hasn't come around yet but the defense is really
showing some stuff and then you started to be like seeing teams like okay here we go like this is
this is going to happen maybe middle point of the year we get you know the the full plot flashes
the packages are coming around and this is an exciting 3&D or you know even more upside with Isaiah
Evans then the shot just didn't seem to consistently come around and I feel like he got to a point
where it was like oh this is a colder name in the draft world and I'm talking more of like with
draft fans and whatnot and even like scouts and evaluators many around the league when you talk to
him it feels like it was the name that you always hung up the phone and you're like didn't talk
about Isaiah Evans like he you just kind of remember that like weeks later you're like oh there's
always a guy you don't you know speculate about or talk about and it just seemed like he always
slipped through the cracks and quietly I think there's been a lot of attention throughout
this whole draft cycle to all of the big names that happens every year like we always give
attention to the freshmen and the news so we're always like oh wow this is this is intriguing
this is fascinating what about this one what about this one and we sort of kind of ignore the
returners because we're like well we know what they are and it's like well no you don't
gotta appreciate that because this version might be different from what we've seen in the past
with these guys Isaiah has been quietly playing some really good basketball for Duke
last 10 games including today 16.8 points per game on shooting splits of 46 43 80 now look
there's not a lot of versatility with Isaiah right now when it comes to the box scores look he's
only average in less than two assists per game he's a ride around two and a half rebounds a game
in that last 10 stretch on this season he's around 15 and three on 43 37 86 so that's that's okay
like obviously that's not something you're like well we're gonna be freaking out about that but
his last three games 18 3 and 2 with almost a steel game on 45 42 I still think Isaiah is one of
these guys that like you could quickly all of a sudden you get a game where you're like oh wow
there it is there's more of what you're expecting to see and then you can kind of be like hey but
at worst case scenario we get an efficient shooter that could become a really good defender and
play 3 and D like look he might not be the best rebounder or he might just be a bucket a guy
that wants good shots but if he's shooting mid 40s from both the field and 3 while shooting 80
percent at the line yeah that's gonna work at the next level too so why I wanted to spotlight Isaiah
is I felt like he was one of these guys that if you look at the positional depth of this class by
archetype now I'm not talking about just like point guard shooting guard small force I'm talking
about like rim runners floor generals you know sharp shooters shooters usually always kind of
trend upward when you get to a class where it's like well teams need shooting especially in
today's modern NBA you need shooting more than ever and when you see a class where it's like hey
that shooting drop falls pretty quick and I'm not talking about guys that just might be flirting
around 40 percent I'm talking about guys when you watch them you're like oh my gosh they are one
of the shooters I've seen them while like that camera cars and incredible shooting in this class
Braille and Mullins after that you really get to a point and I'm talking just about like they can
hate hit these remarkable shots from everywhere you know I know Darren Peterson and AJ
to Bansa are really talented bucket getters but I'm talking just pure shooters so I I think
Isaiah Evans is right up there I think he's been one of those guys where you got a pot of
half him in the mix is one of these elite shooters today against Florida state and Duke's first
conference play conference tournament game Isaiah Evans finished with 32 points and six rebounds
I think this is the type of performance and this is the type of one of the reasons I wanted to
spotlight Isaiah is because this is a guy that will heat up in a hurry and start playing some of
his best classful in the year and let's say Duke has a legit final four run and Isaiah Evans playing
good that means a lot of players have gotten eliminated a lot more of the spotlight is focused on him
and look 32 six and three with two stocks he was 11 for 20 from the field seven for 16 from three
and three for four from the free throw line with two turnovers Duke wins by one in a heck of a game
but he's just the one I would keep an eye on I think there's a lot of names in this class and why
this is such a big week for March Madness there's a lot of games in this class that could be going
back because of how deep this class is so that means there's a lot of guys that really need to put out
of an impressive run in conference tournament in March Madness play there's a lot of guys that need to
you know deliver under the spotlights and I think Isaiah Evans is the one that I feel is like always
somehow is like the one we're not talking about right now and the middle of the year some people
thought well he's going back and I was like yeah you might be right and then you just kind of
kept tracking numbers and I was like hey no one's talking about this but Isaiah Evans has been playing
really solid lately I think this is a great first confidence builder for him in conference tournament
this is what we do see a lot of times where guys all of a sudden just flip a switch and find another
gear of like okay I'm ready to roll I'm feeling good now this is when I be keeping an eye on so
that's going to do it for today's episode of Lockdown NBA Draft with no ceilings my name is Tyler
