We're thinking about the United States of America. It's been 25 years since the attacks on 9-11. And Major League Baseball will be thinking about that all day and all night. During games, there are a number of pre-empt ceremonies. And really across the country, it will be acknowledged in games. You'll see it on caps for players too.

2:03So Todd Fother, we're going to talk to Bobby Valentine later. He experienced that as a manager at the time of the New York Metz. But you grew up in Jersey, so did I. Obviously, we'll get Crafts' thoughts being connected to New York City too. And it's not just about New York, it's about the country being attacked. And how we responded, how baseball responded to just help with a little bit of healing at the time too. Yeah, I mean, everybody knows where they were during this time. I think ultimately, you think back to this whole scenario, we had really no clue what was going on at first. I was in class and history class. And my buddy Andy Altman came up to me and said, you know, the twin-douards just went down. And I said, what are you talking about? Go to class. Leave me alone, you know. And he was right. He was right. You know, a crazy attack on September 11th. There was a lot of tears in school. I mean, everybody was evacuating. We didn't know what to expect.

3:03I remember a girl coming up to me and saying, my uncle missed the bus for the first time in 20 years. And he worked in the twin-douards. And she's crying on my shoulder. And I'm like, holy cow. It was surreal. It didn't feel real. There's countless other stories I can go on and on. But, you know, America was hit. And, you know, how are we going to get back? You know, and I think that was the biggest thing. And I think ultimately, I know we're going to have Bobby Valentine on. And he was a part of the one of the first games that happened. Sports kind of brought us together a little bit. And just I think about the firefighters. I think about the people that worked there. I think about everybody that was impacted during this whole time. And Kratzys from Pennsylvania, he understood too. Like, and so are you. Scotty, we're right down the street here, man. I'm 50 miles away from New York City. I felt like we could see the dust from the twin-douards, you know, the way across the East Coast.

4:05Yeah, it was just it was a terrible time. And I talked to my buddies all the time that are in fire, that are firefighters and policemen. I said, hey, man, just giving you a courtesy of allowed just to say, I love you or something like that. Because you never know, you know, what can really happen in this world. And it was it was, it was a really tough time for a lot of people. Yeah, I mean, 25 years is, 25 years has changed a lot. I remember that. For that moment, obviously, I was, I was a class in college. And the baseball doesn't like, it doesn't demean what 9-11 is. And, you know, you saw the doc, we talked to Todd Zeel yesterday. Like, it doesn't, it's not the most important thing. But baseball is fortunate because we play it every single day. And after that, I just remember thinking, I remember thinking, like, how do we get back to normal with what just happened? And baseball is a daily thing. Like, it's a daily event. And if we can, you know, if baseball helped America heal in that,

5:08then, you know, I feel, I feel honored to be part of the baseball community, which was so affected by this, not just with games being canceled. No, it was with like, hey, this story of a minor league season ending right at the beginning of September and guys getting on their flights from California to go from the East Coast over and different guys, hey, the team won or the team won the night before. And they were celebrating and they didn't get on the flight. I've had so many people through the baseball community have a connection to 9-11, being on the East Coast, needing to go back to the West Coast. All that stuff, like, it is, it's a somber day, but it's also a day where we need to celebrate the crap out of it, because I think we banded together as a country. And I think baseball had a small part in that, and I'm proud to say I'm part of it. Mm-hmm. Well said. And much more on this. We'll do much more later on, Bobby Valentine, joining us on FT.

6:10But for now, let's get to some topics. All smiles presented by Lorraine Co. I mean, you can't ask for a better return to the big leagues, Todd Father, Anthony Volpe, sent down to the minors. We're going to get some sound from him during this segment, but he was like, I didn't know what I was going to come back up. And he comes up back up pretty quickly since jazz chis' him, hits the shelf, hands up with three knocks, a grand slam for Volpe. So the yanks ran all over the Rockies. And what do you think about this for him on a return? And can he be an impact on the Yankees, even when jazz returns? Can he be a utility guy and play all over the field for them? Yeah, I mean, first and foremost, they needed this sweep. That was a big thing with them just coming into the sweeping Colorado. At least they can gain, they gained a game in this race team.

7:11I didn't think they were going to win two out of three against the Braves, and they ultimately did. So what? Okay, fine. Yankees, game to game. They'll have a four game series with them on the 22nd. Yeah, Volpe came in, guns blazing, man. Listen, you saw the guy go down, smiling after he lost two ABS challenges. And, you know, he didn't know what to expect. I mean, it's a whirlwind. You're up in the big league for the last couple of years. And ultimately, you're not doing what you do best in helping your team win. And the offense wasn't there, defensive times. And now you've got another chance. How many people can say they get another chance at their job to come up here and make an impact for at least 15 days? And I think for him, he's got to take him around with it. It was nice to see him get those three knocks. I loved every second of that. The Grand Slam was opposite field. That was perfect for him. So there, drive the ball the other way. Yeah, I love every second of it.

8:11Can he have an impact? Sure. I'm just a bit of a guy who's going to be able to get the speed, you know, a guy that you can put in at the end of the games, if you feel like you need him for defensive purposes. And people are like, oh, well, his defense isn't good. He's actually pretty good defender. He struggles at times, but at the same for me, gold Glover. I mean, you can't really take that away from somebody. So, yes, I think he's seeing this opportunity. I think he's taking it seriously. Let's see into the playoffs. Dehydration is real people. I mean, I think he, his words, not mine, but I've been through so many different minor leagues. Minor league demotions sent down from the big leagues after what a year in the big leagues, three years in the big leagues and watching how guys handle it.

10:13I remember a, I remember a reliever. I won't even say his name because he was kind of a, kind of a dish. But I knew you're going to. He was like, he comes down and goes, Pugh, haven't put my clothes on a clip in five years. And I'm like, what? I was like, who cares? We're here now. He's like, I didn't mean anything by it. I'm like, all it means is that you don't want to be here. Nobody wants to be in the bushes if you've been in the big leagues. Nobody wants to ride on a bus instead of PJs. Nobody wants to make a tenth of what you make in the big leagues in the minor leagues. So Volpy said he's like, I don't know if I'll ever be there. Does that catapult him? Does that make him fully commit to the fact that maybe he needs to make adjustments with his swings? Maybe he needs to be able to make, you know, some type of adjustment that he was probably trying to make in the big leagues. But it's tough to make adjustments in the big leagues. Can he become a serverable player? I don't think it'll ever be like a year long year after year above average hitter.

11:16But if he can just be an average hitter, he's always, he's a positive war player every single year. So his value to a team is always going to be there. It's just a matter of how far can he take his career? Can he never go back to the minor leagues? No matter what he does, what jazz is gone. I don't think they're ever going to be like, sorry, jazz, there's a right hander on the mound. We're starting Volpy. You know what? He could commit to some left handed at best for this team down the stretch. We'll see. Let's get word from him. He had the line we were referring to post game that resonated with people. Here it is. The emotion that goes into the leg. No, I mean, I just felt like I had an opportunity and obviously it's weird that we're happy and everyone wants someone to get hurt or anything. But I had nothing to guarantee you. Obviously, I thought I was never going to be back up here. So just trying to make the most of it.

12:18He had a nice curtain call after the grand slam, but let's rewind on this one. Todd, father, how much does it help a player when he returns and he's had plenty of downs during his career? And it hasn't looked exactly the way that most thought it would. First day B, nice ovation from the crowd. And hey, we grew up around here and crat same thing in Philly. You don't always get that. I think you get a little bit more of that now with the modern crowd trying to show support. But I wouldn't say what he put together recently had necessarily put him in a place where you expected the crowd to be like, yeah, let's give this guy a nice ovation. So I was impressed and tell me the psychology of it for someone like him when he's gone through it. Now he's in the minors. He was raking in the minors comes back up and feels good heading back and hearing the crowd appreciates him. Yeah, I mean, listen, there's not much more this cat can do. I mean, you go down the minor leagues and feel like for the most part, you're going to do well.

13:20You're facing pitching that's not as elite, you know, to be honest with you, triple A to big leagues is a big jump. Cratsies and I've been there before. You're going to face some guys that you should mash at the end of the day. And then there's some guys that you're like, I got a battle a little bit, but usually have the upper hand. I think it put him at ease a little bit understandably knowing where he came from, how he started. How big he was and then how low he got in the sense of baseball terms. I think it made him calm. I think it made him cool collective all that kind of jazz. But he's still pretty good baseball. What people don't really understand. Yeah, you're in a market where it's that what have you done for me lately attitude. We're all around it. I don't care what you do. You can be a plumber. You could work at McDonald's in this area. If you're not, you know, humping ass for better words, there's going to be there's going to be a problem. So and if you're not, you know, pulling your weight, it's going to be a big problem. So again, I think going down there, put him a little humble pie.

14:24Then you bring him back up. And I think maybe a little more determined to, hey, this is somebody needs to let me know. I need to let myself know. I need to get going here. I might not be playing too much longer in this major league. One, one, one thing that everybody always says in the big leagues or in the minor leagues. You know, I get play better. If Volpe needs to play better to play for the Yankees, that could be different than plant need into play for another team that would probably take an above average production wise overall at shortstop. The other thing that Volpe has gone for him that probably irritates Yankee fans more than anything is the front office and Aaron Boone love him. There's a lot of guys that get sent down from the minor gets sent down from the big leagues. And there's nobody in their corner. There's nobody that's like, man, you know, I can't wait to get this guy back up. When she comes back up, we want to give him an opportunity. So that's something that he has in his favor in his camp. But the reality is, if George Lombard plays better than you, you have nothing you can do about it.

15:30There's another George Lombard. There's another Jose somebody in the minor leagues behind these guys. You have to continue to improve. And just because Volpe doesn't do it for the Yankees doesn't mean he can't do it for somebody else. Yeah, this could be a big couple of weeks for him while jazz chism is sitting and you're getting some more regular playing time regardless of what happens after that. And the way the Yankees look. And yes, the Yankees are still three games back of the race. They do have that four gamer that's coming up in about 10 days. The season series also is important. It's six three in favor of the race. Really if they win one more game in that series, they take the season series that gives them an extra game. One more thing you said about jazz. I guess it was a free agent after this year. Jazz chism. I mean, what is what is George and Volpe look like at second and shortstop? What does that look like? I don't know. Just not that you have to be like, oh, he's a free agent. Oh, they're definitely not resigning because they got Volpe. Like, no, that's not that's not how it. But this is a try out for your next step in the big leagues, whatever that is.

This is where I don't think the blue days are very good, but they could do something. Kevin Polar said it yesterday. T B D has been their best pitcher. The opener or whatever the whoever they're going to decide to throw and that's who's throwing Saturday. Like if they go in and take two of three and the white socks continue to skid and the guardians continue to search. This series could really swing not just the wild card, but the American League as we're watching it right now. It's good call. Theodore Beauregard Davis. Pablo Rennes taught me that. That's who T B D is. I'm going. I'm going Astros race, my guys. Like this is a battle here. If the race ended up losing some games in the Yankees can come through, watch out. Astros are right there doing their due diligence. Race had a tough little go here with the teams they've been playing and in the doing just fine, but is there a weak link in this race team as the last 15 16 games? Are they going to go.

18:48Like a six and nine or six and 10? Are they going to get what they do? So we'll see. I'm fired up about that. You're done. There's junior needs to pick it up. Yeah, you pick it up. You're done needs to pick it up. I don't want to get to this part of the season and not like if I'm if I'm going to see Keke, I'm finding every single Astros game because he will be he's going to pick it up soon. He's been he just he just doesn't look the same. He's going to make a run for the triple crown. If you have a chance to get a ticket to watch the guy that's getting the triple crown. 20:58Todd father. When we look at a player who's towards the end of his career and the numbers are ticking down you're like, okay, this might be it. Is this going to be his last season or maybe there's injuries popping up sunny gray is probably going to be what top five. Al say young this year you look at a player like that and you're like damn is he potentially going to leave us it does happen Brandon belt was at a banger last season before he went out big poppy there's plenty of guys don't get crap started on the branded belt situation and how he got screwed in the off season with nobody wanting him for no reason but anyway. Does this shock you when you see news like this. Yeah, I don't think it's shocking I think it's a new age of baseball man family dude I can't say enough you don't want to miss your kids stuff like for me personally. I didn't want to retire but when I did I was kind of okay with it because now I could just be dead you know without leaving all the time. I don't know I don't know is he is he done after this year is the a free agent after this year do we know that crafty he is maybe I don't know I mean listen I I think when you talk about family hits people deep and I think that's the bottom line there's there's a team option team option okay so there's a team.

22:13He's not a free agent then I mean because they're going to pick that up I don't know what the number is but he's got a two six 90 array they're going to pick up whatever that number is 26 starts come on. Okay, all right so maybe maybe it is a tactic. Hey, I don't know I think when you talk about family gets real serious I don't think it's hard it's hard to figure out but Sunday Gray has been elite I remember him with the A's I mean fantastic he had that two summer that I could never hit. Remember him he was so he's so slow and deliberate on every pitch like took his time deep breath and then it was a blow. Yeah, it came out like a cannon and went either way whatever he wants to do that's great but you know we're getting older now Scotty Craftsy there's not that many guys that I played with that are still playing so if I want to hold on to all of them you know so hopefully he changes his mind. I think there's probably a little bit to do with it but I also think it's 100% true very few Todd.

23:14Maybe people didn't even hear what he said he didn't want to be done like baseball essentially said well you know what we're not going to guarantee anything for good players who are past the age of 32 so it kind of kind of pushed him out of the game it doesn't mean Todd wasn't good anymore and to me I for me my career was completely average. But I got to go out of my own terms I got to go out I was I quit when it was exactly what Sonny Gray was saying your family says it's time to be home then it's time to be home maybe my suggestion to players would be come home before that because sometimes that can be a little bit too late once they start speaking up about being home but you know what I think Sonny's team option for 30 million can easily be exercised as. A two year 50 million dollar deal and that would take sunny to age 38 and I think there's probably some some ploy in that there's plenty look go back and look at what other guys at 36 37 I'm not sure what max and Verlander signed for and compare Sonny's 36 year old season to what they got.

24:29Maybe he wants to play another two years maybe he doesn't I don't know if the family says be home great but I don't think playing on a one year deal necessarily is you know as advantageous as he would like so yeah I think I think there's partially employee to this to remember Charlie more in. Jeff he tried to he tried to quit like three or four years in a row like I would say five maybe I'm exaggerating but then every year it's like oops 15 million back. It's super easy he's like oh oh I get to throw it home oh I'm never going to play anywhere else but home actually 18 million oh brazier can pay me 20 million absolutely it's when you get to this age when you get to where 36 to 40 years old playing in the game you're going to get to the age. You're playing in the game you're going to get one year deals two year deals does your family want to allow you to be the center of their attention and when that changes it's different.

25:32But everyone has a price. That's what I mean. That's what I mean there's there's a price I just feel like Sonny's pitching so well and knowing Sonny he puts everything he has into it getting ready for the season in the season and it can be. In the season and it can drain on your family when you do that but if he's going to make the most out of the rest of his life he has no shot of ever making 30 million dollars after he's done playing so his team option would take him to 37 but you know what red socks I'll give you a discount for next year. Just put three years on that at 25 a year and we're good to go to saying. That would help that would help convince him any might not need convincing me that awesome year and his family might be like you need to continue this your two good it's not like you're a top 20 picture in the air your top five. Picture results wise in the American league it's it's hard most guys don't walk away from that but if that's the case.

26:37Then he's that hey babe do you think it's okay if I keep playing. She says yeah kids kids are cool to enjoy watching play we enjoy living in Boston great now operation make it not a one year deal. 27:43Attendance was dropping and it's rare I mean the giants really get it good in terms of fan attendance for years when they're good when they're bad but. Since the August 3rd trade deadline they have failed to draw 30,000 fans for nine of their past 16 home games they had not drawn fewer than 32,000 for any of their first 56 home dates do you like the promotion UK. Yes yes but I don't know if Todd would agree with me but like playing in minor leagues you sit there and you go whoo they got gimmicks galore every minor league team got they got somebody they got the beat box boys they got the bucket man they got the bat bat dog they got you know super stars all that stuff going on I always felt like the teams with the least amount of gimmicks in the big leagues. So clearly the giants were feeling the pressure like I you know we got to make sure we bring people back and so to bring more people back yeah that's cool but the.

Or the tickets that you buy for next year is it just one game I don't know but you know what the name of the game is to put butts in the seats and if they weren't doing it I'm here for the gimmick I guess. Well no just why not just make the tickets like 10 or 15 bucks a pop and go from there so you get more people in the seats they sold it more for next year too yeah yeah but they sold them already right like so you bought season tickets so the concept here would be alright like take you and take a holders yeah yeah it's for season ticket holders right for the devoted fans that aren't showing up because say they aren't looking at this year as important which they're right the teams not good right so for example

29:55you go to those three games let's say it's a hundred bucks a ticket right so you get 20% back per ticket so you get $60 that credit gets used for next year season tickets we're not talking about if you're a season ticket holder it's it's not cheap usually for season tickets so we're not talking about significant dollars although it could be significant dollars if your season ticket is really expensive right but for example yeah for each ticket to hundred bucks and you buy a season ticket package or you can get a ticket. It's a season ticket package a full package right that's 81 games so that's $8,100 right I'm trying to just do some basics I know most situations are different then you just got yourself 60 bucks off your $8,100 so it's not making a heavy dent but it's not nothing and it could happen again where it's another 60 bucks off the next series if they do that to maybe end up getting a hundred bucks back or something it's not crazy but it's them just saying hey we want you here and we'll give you a little back and we'll give you a little back for it.

30:55And here's a prime example of what happens if the league says you know what we don't need people in the seats. People are going to go find other things like they had they had what did you say 56 games where it was 32,000 or more clearly the fans saw by the trade deadline they were like this team sucks I'll go find something else to do. If Major League Baseball feels like they can lock out players to get what they want they're going to also be locking out fans because the fans in San Francisco have stopped coming out as proficiently as I've seen them forever as they did at the beginning of the season and if that's the case people find other things to do. Think about it for them I'm not doing all the math for them they're going to make the money back in concessions they know the average fans and we made it back right and you can't do it all year but you should do it when your team stinks and they're not in contention give me a way to incentivize me to come back so you don't have to do all the pomp and circumstance in the matter leaks but this is good I'm a fan of this I think more teams should pick up on this.
