2:00All right, are you ready to talk mail bag stuff? We have heard rumblings that there's a signing imminent. Can't Hughes loves to do this to us. He waits until we put out all our episodes for the week and then he doesn't news. We're not falling for it this time. We're just going to do our mail bag and then whatever happens happens, but please get Hughes signed someone. So we can stop hearing about why they're not signed. Yeah, the cowboy hat is nowhere in sight. I just wanted to point that out. Remember round up, we're not, I'm not touching that. Has nothing to do with what's going on right now. We also have a new bit coming up this season, which we're really excited about. Maybe a few new bits. Yeah, there might be the hat budget is going up. We're acquiring more hats. There will be more hat related bits. Let's, why don't we get started here with our mail bag. Let's go to Spencer Jamison. Hi guys, who's your current prime target for the Habs to trade or sign? I'm married and listened to other Habs podcasts and Tony Marinara said, Maddie Berniers and producer Shane for the sick podcast said, Thomas Hurtle.

3:00Mine is Drake Batherson, even though he'll probably resign with Ottawa. Think for all you do. What are your thoughts? Like, we've talked about a lot of trade targets over the course of the summer. A lot of signings that. There's UFA still out there. There's potential for those guys to still be signed to 10HL teams. Where are you at? First of all, what's the likelihood of a trade at this point of the summer? It seems kind of low to me, right? Yeah, I think so. And I think you pointed out at some point, like in American Thanksgiving, there's going to be some teams that are going to have to face reality that they're not going to be good. And then maybe some players will become available with respect to the three. This Spencer mentioned. I think there's no way Ottawa is giving up Drake Batherson, even if he wanted to come here that they're going to work it out. That's going to be fine. Maddie Beneurs is the only thing Seattle has done right. And so, yeah, I mean, on ice, I mean, with the hockey product, like their other stuff is great, like their off-ice stuff, you know, community outreach, all that kind of stuff, their broadcast team, all that stuff they've done right. But on the ice, Maddie Beneurs is pretty much the only thing they've done right.

4:02So I don't think he's coming here. And the other trade target, which now I am, it's Thomas Hurtle, he would become available but I don't know if he's the right guy for this team. Yeah, I don't know. I kind of like the idea, especially with the Canadian, having a ton of cap space, like they can afford to bring in a guy like Thomas Hurtle, who might become a cap casualty in Vegas, just can create... He will become a cap cow. Somebody he's going to, and it's probably going to be him. Yeah, I don't hate that. I look, I still remain very plugged into the idea that Karoma Chanko could be a Montreal Canadian. And me, is it filling your 2C need? No, but you still build a more complete second line. Like even if it's like I would go into the season far more confident in that second line with New Hook centering to meet off and Marchenko. Right? Like that to me, your center spot isn't any better, but the totality of the line is far

5:05better. That's the target that I will continue to bang the drum on. And like you mentioned, we bring it up a lot. American Thanksgiving is the target for a lot of these teams to fully recognize what they are. I wonder how long it takes Columbus to get to the point where they realize what they are. Yeah. Yeah. All right. I think Karoma Chanko is like the official lockdown Canadian podcast, Trade Target. Yeah. And for lots of podcasts, everyone's very interested in this guy. And for good reason, he's a supremely talented player who's got one year left on a deal that's paying him south of $4 million. Like this is a right now of value. You'd have to extend him. That would have to come with some kind of extension. But the way Columbus is talking about him is still very concerning if you're a bluejack it's fan. They basically are like we expect him to be at camp. He's under contract, which is never like that's the kiss of death as far as I'm concerned. Like as soon as you start talking about players like that, it's over and there's no coming

6:06back from it. Yeah. We expect him to be at camp is not we are signing him for seven years. No, that or you know, it's not even he's excited to come to camp. We expect he'll be there. Never a good sign. All right. Jack I face punch three questions. No explanations requested, but it's your show. So please do as you wish. Question one, well, can Gully ever be a top three defenseman on this team? No. Yeah, it's tough to put him in that spot, right? I mean, not his fault. Not his fault. It's just that the guys in the top three spots are he's not going to leapfrog them. Yeah, I think his only the only way that we look at this and that is the Kate. Well, so I guess this is the question. When you say top three, does that mean the best overall three defenseman on the Canadians? Or you know, are you saying they he has to be on the first pair or part of the second pair? Because being a left handed shot, it's going to be difficult for him to do that.

7:12You know, I don't I think there's a time where he could in by way of impact past Mike Matheson while Matheson is still under contract with the Canadians. But I don't think that would still, you know, if he passes Matheson, that would put him at three, but who knows what Ryan Bocker is going to be. Exactly. Or whoever they get if Ryan Bocker doesn't pan out. Right. Because if Ryan Bocker doesn't pan out, they're not sticking with what they already have. They're going to search for it elsewhere. And that's the thing because King Gully on very many NHL teams, and I know you said we didn't need to explain, but I do want to explain because I love King Gully as a player. And very many NHL teams he is in your top three on this NHL team. He's not going to be, but that's kind of the point. The point is you have King Gully in your number four or number five spot. It seems like a luxury, but those are the kinds of teams that content. Yeah, totally. All right. Next one. Who would be the better forward in the end? Svavkowski or Demidov? It's a bit of open ended.

8:13The word better is sort of I of the beholder question. Who do you have? It depends on if you mean production wise or impact on the team wise, like intangibles. Because I think production wise, Ivant Demidov has just, he just has the higher potential. He has the potential to be like one of those guys that maybe we're talking about, like we used to talk about Nikita Kutra, which we still kind of do even though we hate him, right? Like to me, Ivant Demidov is that kind of guy. Whereas Yuraislav Kowski is going to cause a lot of good things to happen, but they might not be on paper. And they might not be in the points totals or in other conventional stats. Even in some of the fancy stats, it might not be visible. But to me, I think if you're looking to, you know, the luxury that we have here in Montreal is that we don't have to choose between the two. But overall, at the end of the day, like I think they're both going to be extremely lauded for very different reasons. But you know, we were talking about the tiers yesterday. I don't know if Slough Kowski is going into the MVP tier, but I think Ivant Demidov has

9:17a good shot of going into that MVP tier. And so I guarantee, I don't want people, you know, 10 years from now being like, where you're an idiot because you're at least families into this podcast and you hate the haves, why are you doing this to yourself? But I really do think that both of them are going to be incredible players. And if the Canadians are to end up winning the Stanley Cup, they're both going to be extremely instrumental in that happening. I just think that at the end of the day, Ivant Demidov is going to be the name that we include amongst those guys in the MVP tier. Yeah, I think that's right. The production, I think, to me, to me, to off, will always have that in his corner. I do think Slough Kowski is going to be able to be used in more situations. I see a future where you can use him as a penalty killer. I see a future where you can play him in five on six ampionette scenarios, right? Like I see a future where you can use him everywhere. And that's not necessarily the same for Demidov. Nor should you want to use Demidov in those situations because his offensive is so valuable, you should want to keep him fresh for moments where he can make a difference doing the things

10:20that he wants to do. You know, I think that's what's going to separate these two guys is just there. Well, I think Demidov just has the more raw offensive talent. But I think Slough Kowski, you're able to use in more situations. So in ways that won't necessarily show up on the score sheet. Last one from Jack I face punch. Would Jaden Strubel be wise to fight more often? I don't think I can, I don't think anybody can in their good conscience suggest that a player should fight more. What I think Jaden Strubel could, could afford to do more often is use his size and physicality more effectively. There are some shifts where you watch him go out there and he can just throw guys around the ice. And you'd like to see more of it's tough to maintain that now over an 84 game season. I totally get that. But like I would like to see him be more of a physical dominating force on a nightly basis that that is the great differentiator between him and Arbor Jack.

11:22Is Jack guy is always going to bring that. If you can bring that more as Jaden Strubel, you're a better skater than Arbor. You're probably a little bit better with the puck than Arbor. That's your differentiator. It's not just fighting, it's not just dropping the gloves. It's, you know, the fear you put in other people just by playing physically, they're not going to want to go into your corner if you've got the puck or if they've got the puck and you're putting them into the wall every time. Yeah. I agree. I don't really have anything to add to that. I was just going to say like I don't necessarily think he needs to fight more, but I think he's just an intimidating player and when it is placed, he does a good job. It's just not really his thing. I'm a new hockey fan from late last year, influenced by a certain crave hockey show, the rebuild just kidding, it's the other popular one. One of the things I have been curious about as a new fan is the number of mattress endorsements have players. So thank you for sort of demystifying that in a previous episode. What are some of the more bizarre funny products that have done ads for previously?

14:29And which current player do you think should get a mattress deal next? My favorites from the past were always the when the players would get like their own burger or put in from McDonald's. Like the for me, the one that comes to mind is the Jeff Petrie smoked meat put in because it was like a fake contract negotiation between Mark Bergervin and him. And like the thing that that made him stay in Montreal was getting a put in with smoke from McDonald's, which is really funny. That's the one that comes to mind for me. What about you? So for for all our listeners who are new to the Habs or the show, I want you to this is from like maybe 10 or 15 years ago. I want you to look up the J bearish shell Habs ads. It would be about 10 or 15 years ago. No, don't do that. It is that old. Yeah, it is that old. And it was I think for like the new like it's now club 1909 or I don't remember if it's still whatever it was. They started a fan club, right?

15:31And you could join it. And it was like the whole thing was like get closer to the Canadians. Just look up J bearish shell Habs ads. You're going to get that. So it's not really the players endorsing a particular product, but they're really, really funny. There've been some strange ones over the years, but I think like one that I find that really fitting, but also kind of not is Colcoffield's current, um, uncrustables ads. I didn't even know he did that. That's like the most Colcoffield food of all time. Exactly, right? So it like it totally fits. But like when you're thinking NHL player, you're not thinking uncrustables, right? No, you know what I am thinking though? I'm thinking NFL players. There was an article a few years ago that like the NFL players go through hundreds and hundreds of uncrustables during a week. Like it's crazy. Go look it up. It was the athletic ran a story a long time ago about the number of uncrustables that NFL players eat. They like ranked it by team. The data is incredible. I really recommend there's like incredible infographics all about peanut butter and jelly

16:35sandwiches with the crust cut off. You know, very important grown up stuff. Yes. You know what I'm going to do though? I'm going to like try and scour and see if I remember. There's just like, there's, it's, it's slipping my mind. As for who should do a mattress ad next, I think Lane Hudson because that guy never gets off the ice. He must be really tired. He deserves a good mattress. I'm going to go a little off the book here and say Marty Sanliwi. I think it would be really funny if they gave it to Marty. It's just the commercial rights itself. He's getting grilled at a press conference and the walks back in and sees his mattress and falsely. I think that's the yeah. Jeff Gordon, Jeff Gordon would also be really funny in that situation. I would love to see that as well. I think so too. And I also think that this is one of the few markets where you can have a front office or coach like get an endorsement deal. I don't think they're doing that, you know, everywhere. I don't think the, you know, executive vice president or whatever he is now.

17:35The executive president. I don't know. Whatever they call it. They gave him like a fancy new title that was like his other title and it's just like an excuse to give him more money and keep him longer. Right. Exactly. All right, let's go to a Roberts brother. This time it's Kyle Roberts. Hello Roberts bros. I've got two questions jammed into this email with camps coming up. Who are you guys? Who do you guys hope shows up and competes for a roster spot? And who would you like to see surprise everyone? So who is it that you would love to see step into camp and we go that guy needs to be on the team? Oh, and back. That's a great answer. I think that would be helpful for the bottom six. Yes. For me, it's it's an extreme, it's out of extreme. I'd love to see him walk in there and just blow everybody away and go, I'm an NHLer now because I think he's getting close last year. And you know, there just wasn't the spot for him. He looked perfectly serviceable in his time in the NHL and I just, I think it's his time. I didn't put Florian Jacki in there because you obviously could because I think everybody

18:39in the city wants him to have a roster spot because he kind of rocks. Yeah. Well, I didn't include Ryan Bacher or Florian because I think all lies are going to be on them, right? Yeah. The person I want to show up and be like, I'm claiming this spot is Owen Beck. Yeah. I think that's the thing right is the question asked about surprises. Those two wouldn't be surprises if they made a roster spot. All right. Second question. This one's more fun. Rob's restaurant where each current player has a signature menu item that would be based on a dish that's popular where they're from a play on words with their name or something they remind you of. Like for example, Chris Nylon would be beef knuckle braised and red wine with mashed potatoes. They don't have to be main dishes. They could be sides or parings. They can be desserts too. The Roberts Brothers. Just beautiful minds across the board. This is an incredible question. What comes to mind for you if you're making a half-steamed restaurant? Yes, half-steamed. Well, yeah, Coptovish has to be something with sprinkles on it. Yeah. Yeah.

19:39What's the sparkly person? It's an Australian food or is it a British food? Like fairy toast? It's just like toast with butter with rainbow sprinkles on it. Yeah. Yeah. It seems Australian. You probably don't be toast. Let's go with that. Yeah, don't be toast. You know, what comes to mind? Well, you know, like a couple of mailbags ago with Jake Messian is Wi-Fi open to a restaurant called Kohl's Laff. It was a Barbie-Kid restaurant. Good. So there was that. But like, you know, things from where they're from or what reminds me. So like, I feel like, you know, we talk a lot about Alberta beef and the two guys from Alberta being called beef. Are there only two guys from Alberta? Sure. Herbie Dock and Kaden Booleys. Yeah. They call each other beef. That's their nickname. But you know who I really think is like a really good, like refined steak with like nice potatoes on the side. And that's mix of zucchini. Yeah.

20:39For sure. That's a meat and potatoes kind of guy. Yeah. But also like really high end, you know? Yeah. I think mine would be mostly meme-based. The only thing I could think of is a singular slice of pizza just called have a slice from that video that they made when your ice of kowski was going to the Olympics and you ran into cold coffee with them and Kaden Goole outside. They offered him a piece of pizza and he just goes have a slice. And obviously, I'm not going to do Slough Coffee's accent. I find that to be rude. But you know, you can imagine what it's like that. Whenever I see pizza in my head, I hear our reject. I hear your ice of kowski go have a slice every single time. So to me, that's a half steam pizza restaurant. And if you would like a salad, you can order in the mix and they'll mix it up a salad for you. That's right. Marty mixes up the salad for you specifically. I think so. You know, like I feel like Noah Dopson because his wife is from Massachusetts and he's from PEI. I feel like it has to be something lobster related.

21:40Yeah. Like Noah Dopson's lobster rolls. Noah Dopson. No, I'm sorry. Noah Dopson. We got into the sillies. Okay. We're going to, you know, we're going to think some more. And Nick Zerrarius is the king of the dramatic and look as he introduces a controversial or frank take on something, I can see it in my mind's eye. I see it happening. I want to know what you think each other's hook or catch phrases. That dude rules or that rules would be my best for Ian. I felt very seen in that moment and you are correct because I do say that a lot. It's just it's the first thing that comes to mind. You have me clocked there. My name is Marine and I'm listening to you from France. I just wanted to thank you for the quality of your podcast on Locked on Cadence. Thank you. That means a lot to us. I am especially grateful to you for the episode you just aired planning your pilgrimage. Indeed, I'm coming to Montreal first time in Canada in November to watch the wild and haves and abs and haves games because the wild haves and abs are my favorite teams. Well, that works out pretty well for you. It felt like fate that my three NHL teams would be in the same area at the same time. So I bought tickets and booked everything. I'm just a little bit anxious about one thing. For the wild game, I plan to wear a wild jersey. Can you confirm that I will not be harmed kidding kind of? I promised to wear a haves jersey for the game against the abs.

24:45I will buy it when I visit the bell center. As I'll be the resident away fan expert on this podcast. As long as you're respectful, you will be respected in turn. And if you're not, they always blast every arena I've ever been in. They blast a number that you can text if you're being harassed at a game. So you'll be all right. You'll be good. Just treat people with respect. You'll be treated with respect and kind. It took me, I probably went to, I don't know, 10, 11, 12 Canadians games on the road before I ever got to the bell center. I can count the times I've been personally harassed on one hand. And it was very benign name calling. You move on. I don't hold anything against the state of New Jersey for any of that, even though I probably should. I'm never going back there, but you know, that is where there's Canadian talking fans. When I was there, I did not see any of them bothering anybody. You know, the Lightning fans showed up in force.

25:47We were at a game Toronto Montreal. And there was no harassing done of Toronto Maple Leafs fans. So you'll be all right. Enjoy, have a blast. That's going to be a lot of fun. Those are three really good hockey teams. You know, you're going to see some really good games. Yeah, I also think, you know, you can expect like some good nature booing, but like it's usually ingest, right? Like if the, if the Hab score, someone will like, you know, wave at you or whatever. Like you can expect that, but it's not going to be rude, disrespectful or dangerous. And you just kind of, you know, you have to be careful. You're in a, you know, you're in Montreal, Canadian's territory. If the game is a blowout, people will be better, just, you know, keep to yourself. But for the most part, you know, it's, it's good. It's fun. You get to talk to people around you and you have the advantage of being able to speak French. And once people realize you're not actually from America, they'll get happier. Yeah. Yeah. I'm going to trust me on that one. All right. Next question here. This is from Danny and Joe. Two questions.

26:47What is your order for the Atlantic division this year? We're not going to answer that. And the reason we're not going to answer that is next week we're doing all of our division previews. So we'll cover all four divisions. I think we'll, we'll come up with a good format for it. I'm thinking what's who's hot? Who's not? For each division. I think that's, that's a cool. And who should trade us here on Marchenko? Yeah. Second question is from my son Joe. Is there going to be another draw for that arbor signed photo? We didn't realize it had been claimed. And Joe says he has a nice spot on his wall waiting for it. Yes. A week from today. So Friday. The, I guess it'll be Friday the 11th. We will do another draw. This will be the last draw that we do for these photos. After that, we're going to open it up to everybody to send us an email locked on Canadians at gmo.com and tell us why you think you should get the photos. We'll go through the answers. We'll find our favorite ones. We'll send out the photos that way. It's difficult to communicate with people on YouTube. The best way to do it is probably via email.

You haven't written yet.

28:48So you know who you are. Seven questions, too. With the departure of Brendan Gallagher, who is your preferred candidate to wear the A, I can understand why people would look to Josh Anderson. But with someone on an expiring contract who is often injured, why not look to someone who has built this team along with Nick Suzuki, the obvious answer to me is Cole Coffee. But given the chance to take more responsibility, especially if we ever see him on a line away from Suzuki, and it's a way to keep an American star happy in Canada. I think that last part, I don't know that that matters. I think Cole Coffee was having the time of his life being a complete rock star in the biggest city in hockey. I think that's enough for that. But I do love the pick. I don't mind giving him an A. I think it's really interesting. And I'll get into the last thing in a second. I think it doesn't matter where you're from. Can you have players from Russia from Finland? I almost said Sweden, but then I realized they don't currently have a suite. But they've got, you know, upcoming suites.

29:50I think they are all having the time of their life. Every time you hear any of them talk, today we heard Markov, I think it was today. I know I saw it today, but it could have been from Markov talking about Ivanov and how much he loves it here. I don't think it can be from anywhere. And they will be happy in Montreal as long as Montreal keeps this kind of culture. And you know, your rock star Montreal, as Ian pointed out, and they have the potential to win. I think, you know, we talk a lot. We have talked a lot about the players from the US Olympic team being unhappy in Canada, but they're not unhappy in Canada. They're unhappy on bad teams. They're unhappy, not winning. Particularly ones that are getting further and further along in their careers. So the Canadians, as long as there's a chance to win a Stanley Cup, they're going to be able to keep these guys happy. You saw them take less money, or you're seeing them continuously take less money to stay longer, right? So I don't think that's a problem. Anyways, I just want to say that because I love saying that because I love this team. I love how they're, you know, handling their stuff. Who is, who could be a good candidate? I think Colcoffield is great because he's so joyful and he sparks joy in people.

But I also find that it's interesting because he's so, he's still so young, even though it feels like he's been on this team forever, but Lane Hudson, I find, I like, you know, and I know one of the aspects you're trying to replace Brendan Gallagher with is a Brendan Gallagher like presence, right? Like the guy who like leads everyone into the fire or into the fight or whatever it was like he said, but another candidate that I thought would be interesting is Noah Dobson because he seemed to me to be so quiet and like devoid of personality. It turns out he is a big part of his team personality wise too. Yeah. The husband. I, I go. You should get an age. He should get it. We should put an age on it for a husband. That's really, he already has one. It's in the, it's in the middle of the sea. Everyone always asks, what is the CH stand for with a sea stands for Canadians and the age stands for husband? I'm feeding the A. When they straight was podcast, they're going to get that question wrong and you can know

I, I think because it's Brendan Gallagher's A, you need somebody that replaces that sort of impact and that's why I have no problem with Josh Anderson keeping it for this year, potentially beyond. That's the kind of player Josh Anderson is. I've also pointed this out when we talked about Gallagher's departure and sort of who steps into that role a little bit. Jacob. Jacob and, sure, we talked about him earlier on the show though and whether or not he's one of the top three defenders on the, on the Canadians. Caden Gouli. I think Caden Gouli is a guy who has that, that ability to pull guys into the fight. You know, I think that the year that they made the playoffs for the first time, two years ago, Caden Gouli was the one who dragged them there in that game against Carolina. He said it before the game that they were going to get her done, right? Like this was, that to me was like him stepping into his own and it's sort of leadership role. I'd like to see him build on that this year. Maybe not give him the letter. I bet he wears one in a preseason game, but you know, I'm very much of the mentality that

32:57they're fine as is. Let's see where it goes, where it goes next. All right, we have time for one more. Quick one from, this one's from Jalen. I see this reports. I don't know how legit they are, but Montreal wanted to sign Arbor as a forward as somebody who has wanted to try that for years because I feel like he could be more positive there physically without having to be as defensively responsible. What do you think if that's a real, if that's real, he does have that one game as a forward already. I think we have a jack guy that plays forward. His name is Florian. I don't, I don't personally believe that that Arbor Jack guy's impact will be positively affected by him moving to forward. I think his best place is on defense. I think people want to see him play 16, 17 minutes a night, and I just don't think that's a reality at any position. In fact, if he's at forward, he probably plays less. Like he probably played in him seven, eight minutes a night where on defense, he's probably

33:59getting 12 or 15. Yeah, somewhere in that range, you know, we came to a pretty close approximation ourselves. I get why everybody wants to see this. They tried it once because they had no other options and I've kind of rude the day that they tried it because now everyone's like, well, just put him a forward and I just don't think it's, it's that simple because other like name, can you name defenseman that have become forwards and been successful at it? It's not a long list. Like now, one of them is going to play on the alumni game, Matthew Dandel, and uh, not a great example. Uh, no, he never played forward. He was drafted as a forward was he not? But he was playing defense and then the NHL level, he only played one position. Right. Dustin Bufflin went from forward to D. Brent Burns has flopped around at some point in his career. Jack is not any of those guys.

35:02You know, like that's what I'm having a really hard time is just like, there's no precedent for this. I'm not something that we can just, it's not a video game where we can just say, I'll just put it a forward so it happens, right? Like I just don't, I don't think that there's a reality where the Canadians take that idea seriously. I don't know if I'm, if I'm out of, out of touch or if the children are the ones who are wrong. I think it was like somebody brought it up in speculation and I just didn't see it. Yeah. Yeah, I don't know. I don't think that it's their idea. They'd like to, they'd like, don't get me wrong. I think they want to sign Arbor Jack, and they want him to be a piece of this team. But I think, I think the player and the team are having a hard time understanding what that role is. Yeah. I think that's what the, the hold up is so far on this contract. Except can Hughes like to make our, can't Hughes like to make our episodes obsolete? So yeah, but it's probably signed an eight year contract worth league men or something yes. Whatever. All right, that's it for our mail back questions, right?
