3:04Hi, Joan. Hi, guys. We are here for the Dirty Rush podcast. We're waiting for G.S. We're just going to start. She's going to jump in when she gets here. But I love all things rush because sorority life was such a big part of my life in college, and actually still is. So whenever I get the chance to do the Dirty Rush podcast, I'm so excited to do it. Not only because of the sorority life, but because I get to see your beautiful faces. I love every time you come on. It's like, first of all, well, you and Joan, both. You sort of, to me, look the part. I'm just both of like sorority girls. We wore pink to me. Pink. I'm wearing my pink. I'm not purposely wearing pink, but I mean, I know, but like you're just both so blonde and young and pretty. I'm just 63. I'm so old. Literally, I was just telling Joan before you came on. These might look like highlights, but this is all gray. And literally when we're done, I'm going to the hair salon. So that's my girl. That's my girl.

4:04I was in a sorority in the 80s for me. I was like, what did you wear at rush? I'm like, I have absolutely no idea what I wear at rush. I mean, whatever I fit into at the time. Yeah, right. Exactly. And there were no pictures. Yes, there were no pictures. Well, have you guys been keeping up with rush talk? I guess. Oh, yeah. Mom talk, tick, talk. Now there's rush talk. Rush talk is amazing. I don't know how these girls are doing this. No, I don't either. And I have college age. I'm not going to be a girl. I'm not going to be a girl. I'm not going to be a girl. I don't either. And I have college age kids. Well, almost, Blake Slee will be there next year. But we wanted to get together to talk about sorority recruitment and all things fashion when it comes to the new recruits and what they have to think about. My gosh, it's crazy. Yeah. How much they have to think about. It's upsetting actually a little bit. But I am right. I'm going to give it to you again. I want to talk about that. One of my friends on line reached out and said that they sent me like a five a Texas there, whatever rush videos.

5:06So now all the girls are dancing. And she's like, we did not look like this. And I'm like, I'm not even sure I was in that sorority anymore. I couldn't be in it. I couldn't spend enough money. I couldn't dance well enough. I would not get in. I worry a little bit. That's part of her. So have we lost sight of why we're going to college? Number one, in my mind. I feel like we have, you know, the beginning first couple of weeks of college. It seems like we're all about sororities and you know, about sororities. And so much of it now feels like a class system to me that you have to be so wealthy or so connected to being a sorority these days. Look who's joined us. Little Miss D.A.J. Nice. We needed some young blood. Thank you. Yes. Hello. So nice to meet you. Great tangy. Great tangy. Thank you. Thank you. We're talking about a rush talk. I've probably a lot different from when you were in a sorority. Right? How the times have changed? You think all of us.

6:07Yeah. We should have brought our pictures from rush because I know. I mean, I just, I look back at it. I mean, I had that, I had a head of just curly hair that I was scrunching, scrunching, scrunchy, like a big triangle on top of my head. And then some, I don't know, some roughly outfit. It was just all wrong. I think I had the blonde feather look. Yeah. Yeah. As much as I could get. And I think I had a light blue puffy dress. Right. That's the only one I remember. Some of these inso picks are so funny. I mean, I'm looking at all these. We have several pictures here that feels like these girls are kind of going back to this sort of 50s housewife. Is that true, Gia? I think it's maybe not to the extent, but I think everything does still come back. And I think it's a lot of like the floral pattern that I'm seeing. And even just like the flowy sun dresses, I think that's kind of what's been coming back. Like more, um, love shark fanciest, like a love shark fancy vibe.

7:10Like that's kind of what it is. The pictures that I'm looking at here are the bows are gigantic. Yeah, I can't think. I am like, they take up, they're like the size of their entire width of the girls. Yes. I think that top row with the bow skirts are maybe a bit out of my comfort zone, but I feel like the puppy sleeves are coming back. That's like those are very cute with some dresses, but I think the bow skirts are a bit much. A lot. And not only are they huge bow skirts, but they're also in this super shiny like apidog. Yeah, like half like really thick material kind of like you would wear at a wedding in the 80s. Yeah. Yeah, that's the vibe I was getting. And like the pink is so pink. Yes. Barbie candy pink. I feel like if you guys are just this one dress we have, right, we are all looking at under the puppy sleeve. That looks like to me, it looks like Daisy Kent in that first picture, the white, that little white dress with the puppy sleeves, right?

8:13I mean, I know a lot of people especially from Bama Rush know Pylind Arnell. And she's awesome. She just recently graduated as a University of Bama, but her sister still a student there. What, wait, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, what? Who, what, where, what? Pylind Arnell. So she basically, I want to say like she started like tick, she started brush tick tock. She went really viral at the University of Alabama. And she kind of showed the girls like, hey guys, get dressed with me for my first day of Rush. And she was really into it like a full-blown sorority girl at heart. Like loved every second of it and braced it, loved the outfit planning. And she was very, she was very intricate with how she planned her outfit. She had some of them even designed like very meticulous about everything that she wore when it came to Rush. But it was always simple but cute.

9:13Sometimes she went over the top of course, but it was the detailing in her outfits that really. Pylind Arnell is actually the blonde in the hair and makeup. Like she's the blonde with the curly hair. Yes. Wow, that is what in the Jean-Panet Ramses going on there. Really? Wow. I need to look her up because my daughter will be maybe going through Rush next year. Okay, I've got her. I, you guys, before in prepping for this podcast, I called a friend of mine who I went to Indiana University with. We were both red stepers, so we danced for the football team. And she has, I think I've talked about it here on Dirty Rush before. She has an organization called Crush My Rush. And I guess I think you guys have quoted her sometimes or her company or whatever. And I was like, I just want to know what tips you give to these girls based on the fashion. What do you recommend that they do?

10:13And she said the number one thing is just to be yourself. So this Kyland Arnell is getting things made for her personality. So really just showcasing your personality. I feel like it's big. Well, and that's what she, I mean, she is from a small town in Missouri. Like grew up on a farm, this girl Kyland. Kyland is. And being literally just got to Bama and embraced it. Like she grew up in the pageant world a little bit. But I mean, she also was fully like grew up on a farm in Missouri has cows, horses. Like you name it. Like she did ride side by side. Like can also get like get down in dirty in the mud. But then can also like glam up for her sorority rush. Yeah. So everybody else is trying to look like her. So how are they trying to be themselves? Yeah, she definitely did set the bar. I mean, honestly, I, I think the best thing, it's like you obviously have your three rounds. Obviously the last round, which is pre-round is like your most, like you should dress up the most for preff.

11:18And I feel like now whenever I get asked of like what people should wear during pre-round, I feel like just like still nice like cocktail dresses. I feel like it's like a fancier vibe. But then for the two rounds prior to it, like you can also be wearing really cute skirts with body suits or nice sunglasses. Like I just feel like you can also pick a dress that best suits you, but just follow that category. I have a question though, because Jen was saying that at a lot of the schools now, they actually are giving them t-shirts. Did you have to wear a t-shirt? I did. And what do you do? Because she was saying that you get a t-shirt like two days before sometimes. You can't even plan what you're going to wear on the bottom. Like you would just have to pick out something and hope that it matches. Yeah, not going to lie. I'm like, a dry and all thing back onto like what I wore. It was a black shirt. I want to say this was probably during open house round. Everyone wore the t-shirt during the first round,

12:20so that everyone was cohesive as they were going through the houses. And then yeah, I think I literally wore jeans like a ripped jeans. I love the thought of having that as the standards. So everybody kind of dresses a little bit the same, because I feel like maybe you are dressing in a way that you wouldn't normally dress. So you're showing yourself in a different way. And maybe you would end up in a sorority or that really isn't a great match for your personality. And I looked at these outfits and these girls are all dressed really very differently. Like there's a girl that is from University of Oregon and she actually has jeans and a belly shirt on. And then they're the one that's next to her who is at the University of Miami. And she has a much like kind of straight cut black dress, black and white dress on. I feel like their personalities are coming out in these outfits. And if everybody is trying to dress like over the top with the big bows and the puffy sleeves and looking like everybody else and everybody has the flowered skirts on,

13:20then everybody is now looking the same and you're not really showcasing your personality. And I just wish that like that would be more important. I don't know at that age, you know, it's like I go back to my 18, 19, whatever year old self. I think that whatever was going on with my friends at that time, there was so much what are you wearing, what are you wearing, what are you wearing, what are you wearing. I definitely was not trying to find myself in like this is too Jennifer is. I was trying to look the part right and make the the houses want me and fit in. And you do you tend to wear what your friends are going to wear. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You kind of base it off of all that, but I mean open house round, that was definitely where I received the t-shirt. And that is the most casual round. Yeah. You are literally speed dating where you are going to each one of these houses for like maybe five to ten minutes. Yeah, yeah. So the like wearing a t-shirt and jeans and maybe some sneakers are cute flat because now like the ballet flats are coming back.

14:21But I feel like that is I think I wore t-shirt jeans and sneakers. And then as the rounds go on, you get more and more dressed up like second round. You have sisterhood and then and proff. Well, I think with the casual outfits, like I love a jeans look, you know, but you can you can make that your own by adding jewelry accessories like all of that stuff. So I feel like yeah, with shoes. And I feel like it is really important like yes, everyone's trying to kind of fit in. But when Jen what Jen was saying to me is her advice was to not try to fit in to actually stand out like not in a weird way obviously. But stand out and show your personality however you can. And what if that means jewelry like fun jewelry or a statement piece or something personal like your grandmother's pearl bracelet or something. You know what I mean? Like something that could maybe spark up a conversation. Even the way that you do your hair.

15:21Totally. Yes. Something that like gives a little take into your personality. Yeah. When I was 14 years old, I was kidnapped and health captive for nine months. 20:37Let's talk about the money of it all you guys. Oh, that's gotten crazy. So, Bama Rush, right? So we have different girls in these videos. There are. I'm seeing Hermes sandals for $900. Well, Aqua skirt from Bloomingdale is very reasonable of course. $42 ban leaf. $5,100. Van Cleve yellow gold bracelets. $72.00. Partie a bracelet. Partie a ring. I mean, crazy. Gee, I mean, you're the closest to this. Is that what's going on? And I mean, that's that's Bama, but. That is Bama, but I think also a lot of these girls, if a lot of these girls do have nice jewelry on their breath, it's obviously probably most likely coming from their parents bank account. Right. So not coming from men and I think it's just like Christmas gifts. And you really can't knock these kids forgetting a nice Christmas gifts from their parents. Yeah. But when you when you're looking at like the outfits of them of it all, I don't think the outfits are that on like that outrageous.

21:41Yes, they're wearing very expensive, maybe accessories and jewelry on their wrists or their handbags, but that very well could also be passed down like from their parents. Totally. But an aqua skirt from Bloomingdale's address from Bloomingdale's even if you go on Amazon, there's so many good finds. And Amazon also has a little bit more like some outfit choices that are also on the more expensive side, like some dresses that are, you know, too. Yeah, and that are $200, but then they also have some dresses that range to like the $40 to $90 range. So I think it's all about where you're looking, but you know, you could even go to Bloomingdale's aqua's one of the like the brands that I've seen in Bloomingdale's for years now. And you're shopping at Bloomingdale's, but you're getting a skirt for $40. So I think it all ranges. And I think a lot of these children, like a lot of these kids going into school also get a lot of their, a lot of their access from their parents. Look at Miss Gea calling sorority girls chill grin. How are you not?

22:44What are you 20 kids? Crazy kids. The children. I mean, and what what about doops like if you really feel like you need a van cleaf, whatever. There are so many doops out there. Amazon selling is selling literally a bracelet stock of like what girls wear, which like is van cleaf, cardier like whatever it is, they will sell a stack of them. And you can literally buy it and put on your rest. I mean, listen, I think it's all about how you present yourself and accessorize the, you know, your jewelry mixed in with some a handbag or whatever. It's all about how you do it because nine times out of time, no one's going to know. Do you think that like for me, my age, I'm over labels. I'm saying that I'm not putting a big umbrella. I'm not saying I'm not going to ever label. But I'm really trying and enjoy more wearing things that don't have labels now. Is there any kind of a trend towards that?

23:46Namaskin Gia just at your age sort of less labels more. No, you're looking at me like no, no, no, I don't think that no, like I mean, I'm just guilty because I do love, you know, not even wearing not even wearing labeled like clothing. I mean, I don't really love the way it labeled clothing looks. It's very whether I go into a store and I really like a handbag or a piece of jewelry. But I don't really love the monochrome like look of clothing. And that's why I really never want to buy designer clothing. But I think also when you're in college, it's not as intense like maybe now, but my personal preference, it's like if I'm going out and I'm going to like frapparties or bar college bars, I'm definitely not like I'm just not loading up my wrist with a ball, you know, like I'm just not doing that. And I, you know, I'm also not bringing my Chanel purse to the bar, like a college bar.

24:49So I think there's, you know, I think there's a range like when you're when I was in college, I would get my going out bags off of Amazon. And you or if you don't like, you know, or she in it, but there's also great brands now on Amazon. Like the JWP such a great bag brand where like they have such cute bags. And I don't know, I don't think it's worth it, especially when you're in college and, you know, I don't think it's a top priority. I think there's a lot of other ways that you can accessorize yourself. There's also so many other jewelry brands now where you can find really, really cute jewelry that doesn't tarnish and it's, you know, just a better option. Rush appropriate. Yeah, I think about the girls that like maybe their first generation going to college or they just don't like I grew up very, very middle class and being in sorority. I like I had to pay for it myself. My parents said, you know, we'll send you to college, but you're paying for all your extra stuff. And how hard this would be for people like that were in that situation.

25:53Like how intimidating it would be to walk in the sorority house with all these girls who have all so much and they're walking in there like very plain dress or I just think it'd be so intimidating and I kind of put myself in their shoes a little bit like what do you think about that. And like maybe it's really not fair and you know having maybe that t-shirt carry through for more rounds would allow maybe a more diverse economically at least diverse group of people in the house. Yeah, I like that. I like that idea. It just depends on the college. It depends on the sorority because I feel like I've talked to, you know, a lot of girls and whether they're worried about what they're wearing or not. It depends on the college. It depends on the sorority. And if you want to be in a more academics more sorority, there are definitely options at different sorority at different universities. So I feel like it just depends on where you're going. We know that the SEC schools are going to be the place where people are trying to dress to impress and they're going to be wearing all of the, you know, the prep, the love check fancy, all of that stuff. You know going into it that that's the deal, right.

27:04So I feel like if, if being a part of a sorority is something that you want to do in college, then definitely do your research in terms of like the sorority life at different colleges and then make your decision from there. You know, I don't think it all every single sorority across the United States is like as Gungho, as Bama or Ole Miss or whatever, Oklahoma. You know what I mean or Arkansas or whatever. So I feel like there's a fit for everybody. You just have to do your research. When I was 14 years old, I was kidnapped and health captive for nine months. Yeah, but this is not that what we were talking to. Oh, I know, I know. And I mean, that's a bit insane. I had I had the cutest dorm room. I got the wallpaper. Everything was from dormify. I did it myself.

33:39And it looked great. But yeah, the you know, I get it. And you know, again, but that is not like not everybody has to be like that. So, you know, not if you want to do that and you choose to do that and you have the means to do that. Amazing, but you can also make your room your outfit or your I yeah, yeah, like literally look just as expensive as the person who got an interior designer in their room, like I bet you you could do the same exact thing by yourself. And I was even just looking at some of these outfits like yes, okay. And if you look at some of them like Bama rush, okay, then you go to Texas A M M. And then, you know, TCU, all of these schools are predominantly down south because I could tell you right now, like when Rutgers University, like they didn't care about what designer you had on you. But as you keep kind of going down like even to Texas A M M TCU that outfits, you know, look at the outfits because you can access rise with any type of jewelry that you want. But this girl is wearing that brand that I was talking about JW pay dress.

34:49$139. I mean, you know, Steve Madden heels for $80 Steve Madden literally does doops of absolutely everything now. Like there are and JW pay they are on Amazon and they're also I think unrevolved. And then speaking of revolve revolve now has a surrady rush section. And yes, people look at revolve and are like wow revolve is so expensive. But there's also very affordable brands on revolve as well. So now that they do have a surrady rush section, you can kind of just like sort through it, see what works best for you. But like a brand that I know is so common that I always look on revolve is super down or they have really really reasonable prices like not over like some things are over $100 but very reasonable. And now that they literally have a rush section, I'm sure they have outfits that are very expensive off of revolve but then outfits that are also so really reasonable.

35:50They also be new in jewelry now also has a recruitment ready section for jewelry. I know another great brand is also EP Jules. She is you know a young entrepreneur who created a jewelry company and she has amazing jewelry as well. So like there are ways that you can make these outfits and you will look amazing but you also don't need to be spending thousands. Here's a little tip from your 58 year old friend Jen Fessler who is so computer savvy and technology wise take the outfit. Yeah, I put it into something called AI and then you say where can I get this exact look for less and you put in a budget. I know I'm not teaching any 18 year olds out there. No, right. What to do. But like if it's my daughter who's already graduated, I'm saying get on your little friend chat GPT and you find out where to get that for $100.
