BACK TO POWER: Georgia Bulldogs Offense Will CONTROL SEC With Chauncey Bowens & Nate Frazier

1:01Georgia Bulldogs. Long time friend of the show for sure, Daniel, we once got kicked out of a Chili's five years ago for a Lockdown Bulldogs meetup five years ago. And a Lockdown Bulldogs meetup. So that's how far we go back. So I'm excited to be here. Excited to be talking about these dogs. Absolutely. And today, yeah, I'm going to just going to ask John what he thinks about this Georgia football team. We're going to talk about the offense. We're going to talk about the defense. We're going to talk about freshman that he's excited about. We're going to talk about gunner's stockings development. We're going to talk about where this defense is going to stack up all time in the echelon of Kirby smart defenses. We're going to cover all the bases. And so let's jump into it, John. And I are on record as saying that we think this 2026 version of the Georgia football team is going to be a return to roots in a sense, especially from an offensive perspective.

2:05The offensive line looks to be dominant. I'd love your thoughts on that. The running back room boy, I mean, it's not Nick and Sony, but it's there's some names in there. There's some dudes in the running back room. The Georgia quite honestly hasn't had, in my opinion, in the last several cycles of this team. And so with the unproven wide receivers, with the depth that tied in the physicality of the tight end room, I expect Georgia to be a dominant physical brand of football on offense. Is that your expectation as well or where what do you shape? Do you see this Georgia offense taking this season big picture wise? Yeah, I think it is going to feel like a little bit of return to a little bit of a different place in time, I think. I think Georgia, you said it super well. This offensive line is set up to be a road grading offensive line. You finally have guys that hopefully can stay healthy, but even if they don't say healthy,

3:09you got guys with experience, you got a little bit of depth that you haven't had maybe the last couple of years. In the running back room, you mentioned it, I mean, Chelsea Bowens and Nate Frazier are two of the best. And then you got guys like Bo Walker, you got Dwight Phillips Jr., you could go and just name guys that you could rotate in there. And it harkens back to a little bit of, you mentioned it not Nick and Sony, but you got guys who can catch that back field, guys who can run downhill at you, physical tight ends. I think the wide receiver group is going to be pretty good. But I just think Georgia, I think Kirby Smart, for me, if he listened to him in the way that he's talking, I just think I think Kirby Smart is, we all know he's stubborn as hell, but I think he's just fed up with, you know, with, with, with trying with this new world of college ball. Yeah, I think he's just fed up with football. Like he's a guy talk, he's, I think he's just fed up, you know, like he's ready. He's ready to play the game.

4:09He's ready to talk about football. He's tired talking about all this other stuff. And you know, as, as well as I do, Georgia takes on the personality of Kirby Smart. They take on the personality of their head coach. And I just think he's an ordinary, like I think he's just, you know, I think it's like, I think last year, like you felt a little bit relaxed, like it was the fire passion and energy. And it was the, you know, I just want guys who love the game. It was, that was what it was last year. And this year, you know, it goes to SCC media days and he's like, I don't want to talk about any of this stuff. Like we come here and it's NIL and it's, you know, and he just felt like he was just ordinary. And I just think that's what this football team is going to be. Things going to be a little bit of an ordinary, kind of grumpy old man football team. But also sneaky with guys like Caden Prothrow, those type of Jaden Radell, you know, you've got, I think, uh, it's a Kobe White helping. I think, you know, Isaiah Canyon, you've got guys that can really be playmakers in the

5:10past game. And, um, and I just, I think George is going to try to bully you, uh, allow you to sleep a little bit and then use some of these weapons to, to go over the top at you. Yeah. Uh, we did a whole episode, um, several weeks back. The angry Kirby smart is the best version of Kirby smart for Georgia period. And that's, that's what we've got this year. I think it, I think it's going to bode well for this Georgia football team. You mentioned it just then. I do think that the run game is going to open up something that Gunner Stockton does really well, which is push the ball deep down the field. I think you saw that even last year, first year full time starter. You call him with the ability to push the ball. Hell, you saw that in the sugar bowl two years ago. He just didn't have anybody that could catch it. So Gunner Stockton can push the ball down the field. Yes. He can, he can throw the deep ball with accuracy. You think about that talent Taylor throw and in the Alabama game that he dropped right on the button, what a one Georgia, the football game Gunner Stockton can throw the ball deep.

6:14And I think if Georgia is able to pound you underneath, we know what that's going to do. This is going to draw the safety. And it's going to create one on one match. That's my question. And you alluded to this, you know, we talked about talent Taylor, we talked former five seven, we talked about Isaiah Canyon. He was really productive at Georgia Tech. This is a better offense, a better quarterback. No disrespect to Haynes King who is the best quarterback Georgia Tech's had in 25 years. But this is a better system than then, then, then Isaiah Canyon has ever played in before. And then you got some of these tight ends. I, I, I, it might require an entire segment to talk about the tight end room. I, I want to know, John, does Georgia have a dude catching the ball this year? I'm talking about a Zachariah branch at George Pickens, a, a guy that you can just hang your hat on him. Do they have one? Do they need one? And how concerned are you that they're going to be able to find one in this offense?

7:18Yeah. Yeah, I think I, I think you, you know, the listeners know we don't know if they have one. You can look on paper and you can say there's a number of guys that could be that, right? I mean, it seems like every year now in college football, you have an inexperienced wide receiver. Maybe it's a, maybe it's a true freshman or maybe it's a guy who's a sophomore, but you, it seems like every year in college football, you have a kind of unknown wide receiver that just all of a sudden, you know, emerges and becomes and is a dude. It seems like that happens with that position more than maybe some of the other positions. But we don't know. I mean, London Humphries is the only guy on the team that had 15 plus catches. 300 yards of a team. Yeah. Correct. Right. So that's what we're working with. So, so I don't know on paper. Yes, I think there are guys who could potentially be that dude. I'm not concerned. And the reason I'm not concerned is because at some point, you mentioned, you mentioned

8:21guys, you mentioned George Pickens. You mentioned Zachari Brant to USC didn't know how to use them and Georgia sure figured out how to use them. At some point, you can't recruit as well as Georgia does in that and has in that in those past catcher positions and not have a dude emerge. Now is it going to be a dude that catches for a thousand yards? Is it going to be, you know, probably not, but I'm not concerned because at some point, you know, Kirby smart, James Cole, Mike Bobo, like the personnel, the analysts, you know, like those guys, like they're good at evaluating. It's just a matter of like you mentioned talent later last year. Like they had a true freshman. They had it in the game versus Alabama. The biggest game of the year to that point for Georgia, throwing him deep balls, right? And it's like, so those are the things that you just can't recruit like Georgia has and not eventually have a guy hit. So I'm not concerned.

9:23I don't think that this team need necessarily needs a dude. You need what Georgia needs is they need somebody that's like a Kobe young that can stay healthy. It's just a guy that's just like, Hey, if you need, you know, if you need a first down, if you need a physical water, see if you need a guy who can go up and get it, you need a guy who can beat somebody, you know, on a vertical, like you need a couple of those guys. But I just Georgia is not a Kirby smart has proven and people can knock him about. I mean, Daniel, it's been three years since Georgia won a national championship. So can you even imagine the property? Can you imagine a drought? I can't even imagine a drought. I mean, three years. Daniel, there are toddlers that have never even seen Georgia win a national championship. I mean, yes. Daniel, Georgia hasn't won a college football playoff game in two years. Okay. Yeah. And last year, Georgia didn't win a college football playoff game and they still beat every single team they played.

10:23Yes, they lost it when it came down to it, but they beat everything they played and that was a very young team. And so I just think, you know, I'm not a trust Kirby guy. I know yarn either like we can be objective. We can criticize. I think Georgia needs to find a dude, but I don't think it's, it's, I don't think having a George Pickens style guy on this football team is a requirement for Georgia to go to where they want to go to win, you know, to make it deep in the playoffs or potentially win a national championship. I just don't think that that's a requirement. And I think what's a requirement is I do think that you're going to have to have some wider receivers that if you think about going back to 2021 and 2022, what you had was you had some good pass catchers and then you had a couple of wider receivers that were just damn physical utility guys Marcus Rosemey Jackson downfield blocking like you just had guys who they just played the position.

11:25They played in the system and they made it work. And I think that's what Georgia's been missing. They haven't had, you know, the last couple years they've had, you know, one or two guys that can do things, but they haven't had a cohesive, you know, three, four deep that you can put them on the field and you can have a couple guys that are physical and blocking have guys that can beat somebody and just, you know, be able to mix it up. So they're going to have to find that this year. I'm not concerned about it. I'm just really not in, you know, and I think because I do think that if I think Georgia with this talent on this team and the way they're made up, I think if Kirby smart, you know, needs to run the ball for 250 yards of game to win a football game. I think he's going to find a way to do it. I just think this team is built different offense and you just have the experience that you haven't had. You didn't have last year. And then the year before you had, you know, just a number of different injuries and kind of weirdness. Yeah. And oh, by the way, you might have four different tight ends received for 700 plus yards this

12:26year. So there's also that to consider. And y'all, like we even barbore. Mm-hmm. I didn't even count him. The most physical ball on the team. And I know you did. Yeah, I know you did. Ethan Barbore, miss basically entire season last year was starting as a true freshman and was road grading guys from the tight end position in 12 personnel. Yeah. And that guy, if that guy could say healthy, you've got, you got a physical, you can, you, you harken back to a little bit of that. I'm not saying these guys are Brock Bowers and Darno Washington, but you harken back to a little bit of, okay, if you can put a guy in, tie in that you can motion out and split out like a cadence pro throw or loss and lucky or whatever. And then you have another one that you have on the field that can, that can, physical blocker, but can also go and catch it. I mean, that's tough that it been. It is. All right. 16:38I cannot wait. It's going to be about two degrees cooler than hell's front porch. The surface of the sun. We are going to be hanging out. We will be a puddle on the earth near Morris Hall at some point. I'm hearing the afternoon. That's okay. Okay, somebody will sweep us up and get us to San Francisco stadium and we'll be just fine. All right, John, let me go here. Let's move on to the defensive side of the ball. I feel like we've been waiting on a defense for a couple of years and I don't know if you feel the same way. I feel like we've been close. We've been right there at the doorstep and so I'm not going to set you up. I'm not going to lead you. I'm going to ask you, if this Georgia defense is finally going to be that Georgia defense and you all know what I mean when I say that Georgia defense.

17:39If this Georgia defense is going to be that Georgia defense, John, it's going to be because what happens? Because there is a lot of contact behind the line. Whether that's sacks, whether it's tackles or losses, like you just got me to get the line and getting driven back. Yes, correct, correct. Yes, even just pushing, even just getting penetration pushing the offensive line and back is the win, right? It's like, but you have, it has a start there for this defense. I think last year, what I loved about last year's Georgia defense, a very young team again. You had guys out there who were very talented. Ellis Robinson being one of them, Elijah Griffin being another. But those guys were young and you saw it early in season. You saw it. God bless. You saw it at Tennessee.

18:42You saw it in the first half versus Alabama, but then something switched and those guys, right, got kept getting better and better and better. And then, you know, of course, like, Trinidad Jam was played out of his mind. The college football playoff and, you know, it was what it was. But at the end of the day, you, you saw what that defense could be minus three rushing ours versus Alabama in a SEC championship game. And they got basically no habit, like no tackles for a lot. Like it was like, it was, there was, there was nothing happening behind the line of scrimmage. And they were still worse, sat total in the Kirby smart era. Twenty. Ten on the season. Terrible. Yeah. And they were still, you know, holding teams to, you know, whatever, like Georgia Tech, 10 points, whatever it was, Alabama, seven in the SEC championship, minus three rushing arts. I think if you can just add that back, and it doesn't have to be, and I hear me out,

19:42I'm not saying Georgia has to go out and get 50 sacks. I'm just saying, like, you have to, it would be very nice. I wouldn't hate it. I would, I would, if Kirby, if you're listening, it would be absolutely okay with me. If you all want to go out and get 50 sacks going fine. Rubin Bain and get us for sure. Yeah, for sure. Let's do that. Right. But it's going to have to happen. It's going to have to happen up front. And I think, you know, Georgia fans are like, duh, we've been saying, you know, been saying that for a couple of years. But, but I do, I, I think when I say that, I don't even mean necessarily the, the players have to do something different. I do think Glendt Schumann, Trace Scott, like I think those guys just have to rethink and reimagine their personnel how they're using those guys. And, you know, it feels like that they have been waiting for. It's kind of like, it feels like they're, that, that in that front, that defensive front, that we've been kind of waiting for the next like NFL guy to emerge, right? Yep. And if that's not, and if that's not, if that's not going to happen, if you, you know,

20:45you've got to kind of change your approach. And I think, and I think, Georgia, I think Georgia absolutely will. I think you're going to see, you know, a lot more. If you think about that 2021 defense, and I don't like comparing, you know, any team to the 2020 one defense, but great as defense of all time. Yeah. Yes. But if you think about, you know, Nicobie Dean Kueh Walker, and you had Channing Tendell, like you had, you had like, there was always like a little bit of a wild card where, you know, you had like, Latavius Bernie was getting cooked at Tennessee and they rolled Christopher Smith down and put in, you know, freaking Dan Jackson of all people. It's like, you just had somebody that when something wasn't working, you rolled, you know, you rotated some guy at the end, you did something different. And that felt like it was missing. Maybe it was experienced last year, but it just felt like you just didn't have, you had some really good players, but you didn't have a dude that you could just, okay, this isn't working. We're not getting pressure. Whatever. We're going to rotate some guys in and, and, and change. And I think that's what Georgia's got to do this year.

21:45Yeah. That 2020 defense is not, not as a comp, but it's great that you bring up because the best edge rusher on that team was Robert Beale. And he's not bad, but he's not the guy you think of on that 2021 team, right? But he's, he was the best perimeter edge rusher on that team. But do you know who the best pass rusher's on the team were? They were in the Kobe Dean and Channing Tendell, who were both common from that inside linebacker position. And we're kind of roaming around, but, you know, but the defensive staff said, no, we're not just going to sit back. We're not just going to wait. We're going to send guys. We're going to be aggressive. I told Clint yesterday, I think that there's a reasonable chance that two of the three leaders in SACs on this team might be back up inside linebackers. Like I, I think there's a real chance that guys like Zaden Walker and Chase Lim might

22:47lead this team in SACs this year. And they're not going to get limited snaps because you're not getting ahead of Chris Cole and Raylon Wilson and Justin Williams. We know that the snaps are going to be limited, but they're going to find their way onto the field. And with Michael Williams injury, Georgia is back in this place where like is Gabe Harris better? Yes, he is better. Is Q a competent player? Yeah, absolutely. He's, these are good players. But there's not, there's not a game breaking edge rush around this team. That's why you went out and you spent money and you got a former five star come from Auburn to be that guy on your team in the tears as they see all and like that's it. So now Georgia's back in this place where you got to get the best athletes in position to get into the backfield. Good job. It's such a great, you bringing up Robert Beale. That's what Georgia fans need to hear is I think Georgia fans have been waiting for, you know, who's the next Jalen Walker? Like who's the next, you know, it's like just naming these guys and yeah, and in reality

23:49it's like no, you don't have to have, you don't have to have that. You just have to have, you have to have the personnel and you have to be able to bring guys in and when you need to get havoc on the quarterback, when you need, you know, tackle for a loss or get some pressure in the backfield, like you got to be able to do it. And I think like, you know, AmeriS Williams was a good example where yeah, Georgia obviously, you know, went out and tried to upgrade at the position. It didn't work out. But when you think back like 2022 was another good example of like who, who had Javan Bullard like on their bingo card before the 2022 season. And then you saw, you know, versus Tennessee, I mean, Kirby Smart even said the press conference. He's like, Glenshument kept sending Javan Bullard off the edge. So many times Kirby Smart was like, I looked at him and said, you can't run it again. Like you can't run it. He just kept it. Yeah, he was like, he was basically like, you can don't run it again and Glenshument just kept running it again because they could not stop him and that and he didn't do that all a season.

24:50But you had a guy in that position that was like, hey, we found a guy and we're just going to keep sending them. And I think that's what Georgia has to do is like get back to a little bit of like, man, okay, it might be feast or famine in some of those pressure packages, but like get, get you some dudes out there that can get home and just send up like Zaden Walker is a great example of that. It doesn't have to be a guy's on the field every snap. It doesn't have to be a marquee name that's going to be a first round pick. It just needs to be some dudes that are going to get home. And I just think of, yeah, I think Robert Beale is a good example. I think Javan Bullard is the one I think of just like that dude. I mean, they just put him out there and they're like, there were times where it was just like, man, like I don't know where he came from. And he just, you know, got to the quarterback. And so that's what we got to have on the defensive side. And I, because I think the secondary is going to be legit. I think if that defensive front can just wreak some havoc, I think the secondary is going to be pretty good. All right. I'm going to ask John specifics about the secondary, but first these.

27:58John, who are the transfers that are going to hit unlike last year in the secondary, when zero of the transfers that we brought in hit? And we were scrambling all year trying to find who's going to be the guy that's going to be the star. And we got a true freshman in Dink, who's like, we're trying to bring him along because he's clearly the best option at star. And then we got a second safety spot that we brought in three guys to compete for one spot. And you know who won it out of those three guys? None of them. Not a single one of them won that spot all season long. Georgia brings in another three guys in this secondary transfer portal class. We got the cornered Gentry Williams from Oklahoma. I think the big question for me on him is can he stay healthy? I think it'll be a competent player if he can stay healthy. But then you bring in the two safety prospects. Those are the ones that are most interesting to me. Both very experienced, much has been said about them all off season, Khalil Barnes from

29:01Clemson and Jamar LeRittle from ECU. Which one of them is going to hit in your mind or both and how many of them deserve you really need to hit for the secondary to be what you and I both think they're going to be, which is really good. Yeah. I think I think I think Georgia needs both of those guys to hit and not hit again. Let's caveat it. They don't have to be. You don't have to do you. They do you have to do you. They do you have to do you have to do you don't have to be that but they've got to be competent and they got to be guys so you can put in every down if you need them out there. I like Khalil Barnes a little bit better and mostly just because he's a little bit more physical. He's a little bit more of the prototypical kind of curvy smart safety. I think Jamar really Rittle has better athlete. I think he's probably maybe a little bit more athletic like probably a little bit you know kind of maybe has a better toolkit than Khalil Barnes but I love the ball skills

30:03on. Like when you look at the thing that stands out to me is like his ability to play the ball. Exactly. It's just it's too he has a little bit his tools seem a little bit better a little bit more polished but Khalil Barnes I just I just think the guy. Might be a little bit of like a Lewis scene. I think the guy's just physical I think he's big and I think you know at the end of the day that's the one that I think will end up making the biggest impact on the team but man I do I do I love them both and I love I love love Jamar really Rittle I think his you know if I had to if I had to pick you know one or the other who do I want on the field I want Jamar tomorrow they're real and I think he'll be on the field probably you know as much or more than Khalil Barnes but I think Khalil Barnes is just going to be the guy that's that's kind of that guy of like all right we got to we need somebody to to make a play I think he's going to be a guy that'll be able to do that.

31:04All right John Ratta let you get out of here. Any last final thoughts on this Georgia team this Georgia season what do you look forward to anything that makes you nervous what do you want to do well well what makes me nervous I went I just had to do the great Adry on the fan deal I just had to do the daily dingers for the Phillies I'm just going to do yeah Phillies player every day every day you did it to daily finger that's what makes me nervous the braves make me nervous right now no I think no I think I think for Georgia I think you know a lot has been said about Kirby smart about the staff about not winning a playoff game the last two years blah blah blah even a lot has been said of does the SEC championship even matter anymore and Georgia's one back to back like all of these all of these narratives that have come into this season and I think Georgia if you look back last year and some of the things
