Baker Mayfield Signs A $165 Million Extension with Bucs & Rays' Magic Number Drops to 15

Remember Baker Mayfield said he didn't want to discuss anything about his contract after he reported the training camp called the Bucks Offer Disrespectful. Set a lot of things that probably wrinkled the ownership a little bit. And yet low and behold, five days before the Bucks are to play the Cincinnati Bengals in Cincinnati, Baker Mayfield got his bag. He has his new deal and is a three year extension worth $165 million. The structure is part of this right. But the last year of that contract is

1:01not guaranteed. But he signed with the Bucks through 2029. And you know, at the end of the day, it puts him in a lot of the, you know, same marketplace as guys like Trevor Lawrence and such. So I don't think he's overpaid. I don't think he's underpaid. I think it's right about where we figured we always knew there was a deal to be made. And they finally did it. And, you know, for all I think I was doing a radio interview tonight with ESPN radio. And they said, dang, man, we kind of looking forward to Baker with the biggest chip ever on his shoulder. That was going to be my lead. Is about the seasons over now. I mean, he doesn't have that chip. So that was it. Season, right? Right. He was going to be all ball. I'm all ball. That's all we've talked about since training camp started. Well, he's going to have a chip on his shoulder now. I mean, look out. He's going to have a huge season. Biggest one ever, right? Yeah. Well, apparently that's out the window. And he was going to be all ball. So now he's not all ball. Now he's kind of all on the way to the bank, I suppose. But I think Baker will have no trouble motivating himself and quite frankly, like, so they did Vita Vaya, right?

2:03They got that done. And remember the cup first two days of reporting. We're pretty interesting before they reported Vita, Vaya says he wants to be traded. Baker may feel drops the deadline. Like it was kind of a to mulch was start to training camp. The national NFL media remembered you exist. You know, exactly. Yes, they did. The Dan Patrick and others twice on, you know, on ESPN. So listen, I know a couple of things about football. And one of them is, you're a play away from never playing again. That's just the reality of the game of the sport. It's a brutal sport. It takes a lot. It gives you a lot too, but it takes a lot. And if you're going to tell me that Baker may feel on principle, was going to say, yeah, I don't want your deal. It's not enough money or enough years. I'm going to go out here and play from my next contract. That's a risk at the very minimum. That's a risk because even though he's

3:04played the last 51 straight games, he's been very beat up during that time. And probably to the point where it hurt him last season down the stretch, and they didn't make the playoffs. So I know one person that's probably really happy and that's Emily Mayfield and her two children, because, you know, no matter what happens to Baker in the future, his contract is going to be guaranteed for the next three years. And possibly maybe he plays former years as well. But it's a good story. And Baker will talk today. Today's the day we usually talk to him, the Wednesday before each, each game in this case at Cincinnati on Sunday. So I'm sure he'll be pumped. I imagine him and Jason Light might have even might have even had a beverage together at some point when this was all said and done. But look, I don't think they had much of a, you know, you think, okay, well, what? If the bucks let him play it out and let's say he's really good, the cost of quarterbacks is only going to go up, right? There's a bunch of quarterbacks that are going to need new deals. And these are young guys that are becoming up for their second, their second deals.

4:08And if you don't play well and they want to cut ties, the bucks aren't going to probably lose enough games to be in that area where you can draft your next franchise quarterback. So really, and I know they love Baker, and especially the ownership. And there was some flowery quotes that they put out today about them. But this was kind of inevitable. Like, you know, they're happy with their quarterback. They think they think they can win a Super Bowl with them with the right team around him. And I don't know that the glazers have much of an appetite for trying to draft and develop a guy right about now, you know, they like making the playoffs. They like being relevant. They like home playoff games. And we all know that if you make the tournament, if you just get in, anything can happen. And it usually does. So, you know, Baker gets locked up and happens a few days before camp. And he'll have to find his new edge. But overall,

5:10I think this is kind of a good deal. Like there was always this is the thing like it never seemed that hard to me. Never seemed that they were over that far away in terms of value, average average annual salary, any of that. Like, they were always in that area. So cooler heads prevailed. The bucks picked up the phone. And sometimes it's just the emotion of it on the player side. I think so. Yeah. I think so. That gets to you. And you know, Baker held true to his word. He was done negotiating. It was the bucks that called their camp and said, Hey, yeah, let's get a deal done. Whatever, you know, whatever the offer at that point was and how much negotiating went on over the weekend or you know, but this is a good thing for everyone. You know, now, you know, we'll see how he performs this year and you know, hindsight may say differently, but there's no questions about it going forward. There's no issues. There's no the teams distract all that stuff. You know, the reason he set the deadline was I didn't want it to be distraction to my teammates. I didn't want them to have to answer questions. I didn't want this. Exactly right. You know, it's official because while the local media was done asking questions

6:16about Baker's contract every time he did anything national or in another market, say the Cincinnati media talking, you know, because the quarterback talks to the other media every week. You know, it's going to be about your contract. Like that stuff's coming up, you know, as much as you don't want it here. And the local media was pretty much, you know, it's a dead issue. He's not negotiating, but it's still a question everywhere else. And he just didn't want it to be that his players, his teammates haven't the answer to it all the time. Good or bad. You know, but now he's he's going to be paid an average salary around Matthew Stafford's Trevor Lawrence, Josh Allen, Joe Barrow, Jordan Love, the exceptions on that list. What do you guys that make more would be Dak press cotton Patrick Mahomes? But the quarterback salaries I'm here to tell you when Caleb Williams and those guys come up, they're going to go even higher. So, you know, if he's still the starting quarterback here for $55 million, that might seem like a relative bargain if he's playing at a high level.

7:19I was going to say I think, I think what Lamar Jackson's up in a year to he's up in a year. Yeah, I think burrows up in two years. Yeah, they're going to all reset it. Man, there's going to a bunch of quarterbacks. You know, yeah, that the prices are only going to go up. Sure, sure. But if you think about his story, man, it's still very compelling to think that when he came here, he had been to four teams in 18 months. And he signed a one year four million dollar make it deal. You know, and this is now his third contract since he's arrived in Tampa Bay and he's going to make, you know, some $250 million, you know, as the buck in yours quarterback. So good on him, man, for a guy that was just a vagabond, you know, bouncing around Cleveland, let him go and we know all what their situation is a quarterback. That that first home opener is going to be very interesting. That's going to be Baker Mayfield week around the national football league as he hosts the Cleveland Browns. But now he does it with security. Now he does it with knowing that he is the bucks franchise

8:25for the next three years anyway, assuming he plays well, assuming he doesn't get hurt, nothing's guaranteed except what they'll guarantee. But he does have this year and two more years and then they won't kind of find out. But you know, to be honest, I was not surprised. In fact, I was making calls as early as this morning, text messages to his agent. They went unanswered. But until it was done, and it looks like it might have been done quite sooner than when it was released because the buck in yours had a full release with quotes from, you know, their ownership, Jason Light, everybody. So it was clear that they knew that this was coming down the pike, at least started talking again last, you know, this past weekend. So, hey, man, I'm happy for the guy. I think the guys earned it. You know, here's what I ask. I ask this question. Okay, great. When does the winning start? Right? Because you've been to one

9:25or two couple of playoff games, you won one since you've been here. You won one playoff game. And that was a big win over Philadelphia. But if you're going to be remembered in this league for anything, right, antics aside and first round pick and all that and the Cleveland debacle. But if you're going to be remembered for something as a quarterback, it can only be one thing and that's winning. Like winning is all that matters at that position. Winning is how you get to the Hall of Fame. You know, you got to get to a Super Bowl and then hopefully win it when you're there. Like and that's the part that while Baker has won and they did win, you know, a couple of NFC South championships. Two of those games, you know, I mean, they had an eight, nine record the first time, right? Then nine and eight. And yeah, their best year was 10 and seven. You're going to have to start winning. You don't want to go through your career and then they look up your bubble gum card and it says you were a 500 quarterback, you know, that's that's not very good. And I know that

10:26it's a team sport. I know that, you know, you don't even get to choose where you go when you come out in the draft. And Cleveland was wretched and still is. But at some point, the money has been paid. The team has plenty of weapons for you. You're being paid. Now you got to go out now and there's a bigger responsibility because they put their faith in you as the face of the franchise. And that's the other thing I think don't think you can underestimate the glazers love this guy. And maybe as much or more than Tom Brady, like Tom Brady, no matter what will always be an England patriot, he will. And I think for now, people will remember Baker Mayfield as no more picking the draft, went to the Browns, right? That it that before his career is over, he's going to own every passing record in Buckingeers franchise history, all of them, right? And there may be a day in the next few few years, when people think of Baker Mayfield, they think of them only as a Buckingeer, you know,

11:27like and he has said Tampa is wants it to be his forever home, he's raising two kids here. So it's a big day in the in the Mayfield House. And I think too that the really good teams in this league, they have continuity at quarterback, they just do. You know, if you find one of those guys and it doesn't have to be Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes, although that is nice. And Alan has still yet to go to a Super Bowl. But if you find somebody the way say Seattle found Sam Darnold, better hold on to them, you know, like because they don't grow on trees. And and Baker's one of those guys. Now his arm still isn't much, but he's improved drastically on running balls down and getting to them and getting them back in the field. Getting back in the infield. You know, he has he's been spectacular. And a big reason the race are exceeding everyone's expectations and leading the AL East

14:33when you know, they were predicted to finish last. That's right. And junior Caminaro, I actually covered the race that day. It's time for the field when he was first called up from AAA. I'll never forget talking to him. Nice kid from Atlanta went to Georgia Tech went to high school there. Spent a lot of time at the old stadium in Atlanta. His dad was in the stands and they did interviews with him. You can see Apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Just a class act all the way around, man. It was a thrill for him to come home and and you know, and put on a little bit of a show. They also got home runs from Yani Diaz, Richie Palacios and Liam Hicks from Arkansas State. Just have to say that. Yes. But Taylor Walls goes on the IL. Yeah, that's a that's a downer. They said the hips are already feeling better. He's hoping it's going to be short term, but there's a lot of race players going on the IL right now. Yeah, and this is not the time you wanted not be your at your healthiest. 15:35afford to lose guys like that. And especially Walls, I don't care what he does at the play. I always had for him a pretty good year. But you need him in shortstop. And so hopefully it's nothing that serious. As you know, the Yankees continue to be on the race tail and they got back one Aaron judge activated from the deal. Yeah, that's huge for them. I mean, there's what 18 games to go. The raise are four up. Yep. So the magic number you're seeing a lot of places say 14. The magic numbers 15. Now, if the raise win one game against the Yankees in their four games set in the last week of the season, they'll have the tiebreaker and then that would be at this point. If they had the tiebreaker right now, it'd be 14. But with 18 to play, you really, I mean, we were talking about this before we started recording. The racers need to tread water. Keep have a four game going into the Yankees series. And you split and you'll the seasons, you know, you've clinched already before you play the Phillies down the season. Actually, I think I have to do the math. But

16:41if you actually just take one, if you have a four game, we go into that series and you take one game, you'll have the tie break. I think you've clinched it already. Yeah, and that's what you want. You don't want it to have to come down to the Phillies on the road. Um, not being able to control your own destiny. I guess the best thing that happened for the race was Freddie Peralta. Kind of a shaky at first, but then he went out there and allowed just a run on, um, I guess a couple of things. Yeah, I think that's fine. Or something like that. But yeah, something ridiculous. He's been great. I mean, he gets keeps getting better. 14 out of 16. He sat down. Um, and so he's beating the Tigers, the Mets and the Braves in his last three starts. But Kyle Sider working in his magic, man. Yeah. 18nings. Look at this. 18nings. Just two runs, 10 hits and one walk was striking out 13 over that span. I mean, that, that will work in the postseason. Well, that's, I mean, he was an ace with the Brewers a couple of years ago. I know. It's, you know, and the raise, you know, you go to a bad team, the Mets and this and then you come to a good team with a great pitching coach and look what can happen. Yeah. No, I, it's obviously you become

17:45rejuvenated because you're, you know, went from a last place team or team, we're going to make the playoffs to one that's not only going to make the playoffs might be the best team in the American league, in terms of record, before it's all said and done. And these guys are playing great. The trade for Hicks was huge. Simpson has just taken it to another level the second half of the season. And then all the big bats, you know, they've been taking turns driving in runs and getting big hits. Well, how commercial is that paralta trade too? Because shame a clan hand doesn't come back. That's that was the thing we always said. Like, you know, you pretty much knew there'd be a pitcher. At least one that wasn't going to make it to the finish line. And unfortunately, right now it's a clan hand, but yeah, man, getting paralta might be the biggest deal they ever made. But, you know, then adding Hicks who gives you power, who gives you another catcher. They've made some wells in the bullpen. Taylor wells in the bullpen's been sensational. I mean, they made some shrewd moves before the deadline that have all paid off. And Jorge Mateo getting him off waivers.

18:48Fantastic. Fantastic addition. Yeah. Especially now that that walls is on the IL. Like you've got to go in and play shortstop absolutely. No, Eric Neander's outdone himself this year. I mean, how did good ball club? I didn't think it was a great ball club. And now they're starting to borderline and great if they do what they continue to do, which is, you know, when up or 90s tight, they're 28 games above 500. It's sick. I know it's crazy. I mean, it's crazy. They can be over 30 games difference before it's all said and done. I mean, who knows, but I mean, the third best team in baseball, the Dodgers have passed them. So now it's the brewers and the Dodgers. Brewers Dodgers and then raise you. Yeah. Yeah. With a payroll that ain't all that, you know, the brewers and the rays don't have a huge family. Brewers are bigger than the rays, but not big. Right. Right. How great would a brewers raise world series? I mean, the networks would hate it and the numbers would probably

Well, you could have done it in the Australia game on Tuesday because there we've actually gone down as a Wednesday game. Yeah. So that would they wanted to make sure that the the champs were the first game. Of course, of course. At home, you know, unlike what the Bucks got in no two times. Guys, guys, say, man, I did. I've seen John Grewd and upset a few times. That was one of the best. He was delivered. You go to these NFL owners meetings and just give you a snap. So yet, this beautiful resort, I mean, it's posh as you can imagine, because well, billionaires are staying there. And so we go to the Arizona built more. Do you have a touchdown return? And John, I before a sense, I don't think I'm seeing him that I don't know. Mad was the word certainly disappointed. I guess incredulous a little bit, but he was just like, I get this straight man. We closed the vet. We got open and Lincoln. What world champion is get don't get to play at home. Well, you know, we can't have nice things in Tampa. You can not have nice things. The Bucks didn't get to go they didn't get to go to the White House because of what the operation, what the Afghanistan and Iraq was at the Iraq war maybe a rocky freedom. Yeah, the lightning, the lightning in 04 after their Stanley Cup didn't get to go to the White House because there was a lockout and there's no season the next year. True. And then the team kind of

We were really no water at all because with no hurricanes, even coming close last year. True. None of the water reservoirs and all that got replenished. There was no tropical storms. And then we didn't get rain in the winter. So it was, I mean, we were in drought, we were drought conditions in the state. I'm not sure if we're out yet, but it's been a little damp lately. So we'll see. Still hot. Still hot. Yeah. I mean, I imagine a week from Sunday. I like to joke. I like to joke about I don't really complain about the heat because I chose to move to Florida and it's much better than winter's up north. So sure, the time you're just, but this summer has been the hottest. Has it not sure felt like that I since I this is my 17th summer here. Yeah. And this is the hottest one I can remember. Pretty brutal. Like the older you get and sticky and no relief and not even the regular afternoon thunderstorms for a long time where you know, least cools off a little bit. Cools everything. Yeah. You get a breeze in that note. Just stay

27:11all dead air like it's been it's been the hottest one I can remember. Yeah. Pretty sexy. For sure. You can't breathe. You can't do anything. But now footballs here and the SEC is going to vote to with with remove LSU from it. So what happened here? So LSU, you know, first of all lane kiffin and they use this in the in the lawsuit to get a judge to to a violent injunction or whatever they call it these days. But you know, how lane went off after the game. Actually, at halftime, even he was getting on his club pretty good. But you know, he's talking about how they did, you know, they didn't even gotten NFL players yet. And some judge said, oh, yeah, really? Well, not so fast, my friend. And what's interesting about this is that it's the correct me if I'm wrong. The SEC, which is taking legal action against their own members saying, yeah, you do this. You're not part of us anymore. Well, they had

28:12filed suit. And then they amended it Tuesday to motion to withdraw or, you know, eject to what how I don't know what of the terminology is LSU out of the SEC. For violating. Wow, wow. Now, the story right before we started recording tonight, LSU added two players to their roster to fill it out at 105, which means that it's capped for the season now. And they can no longer add any players. So none of the pro players will be added. So we're not saying we were wrong. We just moved on. Basically, I mean, you know, I don't think they wanted to get ejected for, you know, I don't think they wanted to join the ACC or something. Yeah, I think they're happy in the SEC. And the big losers are the guys that unfortunately went down on the last cut and NFL team, you know, thought they were going to go back to college and make a bag. And now they're not. So, you know, that's that's the shame of all of this is there's been so many players that probably aren't going to make, you know, multi-million dollar salaries in the NFL.

29:17That had to make real decisions and now get punished for it. And it can happen both ways, right? I mean, sure. You know, it's been the risk of all this, right? Do I go? Do I not? You know, and then, you know, and the NCAA is just so weak and other effective and in effect. I mean, you know, they have been for two decades now because they buried their head in the sand. We're not going to let the players are running the show. Well, but it was never going to pay players this and the other. Well, you know, the money's too great. You can't not now, but you didn't have a system in place to handle this. You didn't know. And so it all gets decided through courts and this and everything's being decided through the court. NCAA makes no decisions. No, they're useless. I don't even know why they happen. Yeah, it's I guess to run March madness. That's about it, right? I guess. Yeah. To make sure that when you go into the court that you take your coke and pour it into a paper glass, it says NCAA. Well, that's, yeah, that's absolutely. It's all about branding, man. Yeah, but it's like FIFA's the same way. I mean, I know,

30:19stadiums have to change names and everything else. It's crazy what they do with some of those stadiums. Crazy. Speaking of stadiums, eh, eh, Segway got one up there in New York. Do you see the ad that James Winston has put out? It's hysterical. You know, if you're going to screw up, you might as well own it. I mean, he owns it. At least that part of the screw up. There's a lot more stuff that he hasn't owned. Yeah, let's just stop at crab legs. But so, you know, he was among other things. If Florida state, he had to hook up and, you know, supposedly was allowed to graze and, you know, get some crab legs in his possession and walk out without paying for him. So he's done a commercial to that end. I forget which outfit it was for. It's actually very door. It's actually very amusing. It is. Even though it's just, okay, I get it. You know, you're everybody's favorite quarterback, you know. But I mean, everyone's favorite quarterback is

31:23the backup quarterback. So that's true. But there's also a part of me is like, will you ever serious? Like, is everything an entitlement, you know, commercials, Fox FIFA, whatever? Like, man, dude, just get serious about your craft, okay? But, hey, he's managed to stay relevant in the world where backup quarterbacks are not. And he's done it, you know, through the soccer tournaments and just his pitchman abilities, which is, which is quite a bit. So, but yeah, I mean, he was, he was great during the World Cup for Fox. He was. You know, I mean, that's where his career is going when it's over. Whenever he's, oh, hang up the football, you know, he did very well. I like, five love things. I think he would be a great in the studio. And I don't know what his thoughts are. He probably want to go on the road and do the color commentary. But I think it'd be funny in a studio. I get break those guys up. Time for some new blood anyway. Probably. Yeah, I mean, he'd play the Terry Bradshaw, the Robertowski role, the kind of, you know, not funny, not funny, but kind of funny.

32:30So yeah, I could definitely see him and poke, you know, septupticating. That's, that's, that's what you need to be. Just, you know, poke and fun yourself. I'm gonna fix again about it and stuff like that. All right. Well, guess what? Uh, it will be a baker may field press conference, which happens every Wednesday, but not every Wednesday that he signs this kind of a deal. So maybe have a chance to talk to baker, find out what he buy and launch for everyone at the press conference. I mean, better. I mean, seriously, like they need to cater something tomorrow. Don't you think? I mean, you ruined my day off. I mean, I won't be there. But, you know, I don't get a day off. If I did, this would have been it. And then, oh, look, baker sign. Hmm. Isn't that special? Right on cue. And that's why I was frantically texting his agent like the last two days without, I should have known when I didn't get an immediate response. Like, yeah, something's going on. All right. But you just never know. So congratulations to him. His mind is cleared. He's got to find a new chip, new shoulder chip on the way out to Cincinnati.
