What's going on everybody and good morning today is Wednesday, September 9th, and this is your daily Go Birds. Good morning update, giving you all the eagles news you need to know as well as what to keep an eye out for today. You know how during the off season I go, we go footballs back, right?
OTAs, footballs back, mandatory minicamp, footballs back, training camp preseason, right? All these times we say footballs back. I feel like that's a little bit of what's happening with week one, right? When it was Monday I said, oh it's week one time, Tuesday, you know, oh it's not Labor Day more, it's week one time. Today feels like the true beginning of week one, like today feels like everybody going back to school to get going for week one as the eagles. The 2026 eagles will hold their first practice during week one, I feel like that warrants it being week one. We'll hold their first practice today at the Jefferson Health Training Complex as they prepare for the Washington commanders on Sunday for 25 on WIP. Make sure you check it out and I know you will if you're listening to this pod. So what does this mean? Well, we got an actual schedule for today. Tomorrow we're going to get our first injury report. We're going to talk to all types of players, all types of people. It's going to be a fun week like we are full go heading into week one. So let's get to pod start because there's actually some pretty big eagles news to get into both with a former player and a current player.
And then we're going to talk about what else we're previewing the matchup. You know, I love previewing these matchups. So we're going to talk about the eagles receivers, pretty important unit this year versus versus the Washington secondary. So we're going to get into that. But let's get the pod going with go birds insiders go check out go birds insiders. It is an extension of the go birds family. It's a place for us all to hang out. We're going to hang out there on Sunday door in the game. Promise you I'll be in there during that talking about what's going on. All my thoughts that I say that I can't say on Twitter because everyone's too mean on Twitter. We can really talk about the Eagles game. But in addition to that, you get an email every single morning, three thoughts, two stats to know, one thought on a player, a trivia question, a final thought. I think it's a fun way to start your day. So if you have not joined go birds insiders yet, the link is in the podcast description. All right, almost like it deserves a drum roll for the first time in the 2026 season. We got a schedule for today. Nick Ciriani will speak to the media at 1220. First time we will have heard from him since before final cuts because we only talk to how he during the final cut.
So a lot to get into with Nick. Will he say who the backup quarterback is? My guess is he will not. Now tell you why in a second. So Nick Ciriani at 1220 practice begins at 320. And then at 5 o'clock the locker room opens and we will also hear from Jalen Hertz somewhere between five and five 45. So obviously we'll have everything Nick and Jalen say in the daily pod for Thursday morning. So make sure you check that out or if you want to watch them live. I'm sure WIP will carry their press conferences. So 1220 Nick Ciriani 320. We'll get to see who's practicing is Bernard practicing is Eli Stauer's practicing. Are there any injuries that might have popped up that we don't know about yet? So practice begins at 320. We'll get our official injury report. My guess around six o'clock, which will be annoying. And then five o'clock the locker room opens up. We'll hear from the players and we'll hear from the franchise quarterback Jalen Hertz. Sometime in that frame. So that is a schedule of what to keep an eye out for today. The injuries, we don't have an injury report yet. But as I said today we're going to be monitoring what's going on with Jonathan Grinard is he out there practicing.
And what's going on with Eli Stauer's if neither of them are practicing today. Then I don't think either is playing in the game. I don't think either is going to play in the game either way. Obviously would be fun news to show up to the facility later today and see them practicing and talk about what that could mean. My guess is they won't be practicing. But if Grinard's practicing, I still don't think that means he'll play. It's very possible he practices for a week or two before he takes the field. So from an injury perspective though, that's what we'll be keeping an eye out for. All right, let's get to the big news from Tuesday. Really kind of add a nowhere. Branding Graham announced during a TV appearance. It looks like he was at an event for NBC Phil and Elfya. Announced that he is officially done playing football. So Branding Graham for the second time retires. And we'll play some audio here of Branding Graham making that announcement. There's an obvious question that you're in a suit and not a uniform. And is that going to change again this year or you could stay in a suit? A lot of people want to know.
It's a good question. Everybody, I'm officially done. Y'all hear it from me first. This is news by the way. But let me tell you this. They are in great hands. I mean, Jordan Davis, I'm telling you, like he is a guy that's going to get the defense going. I mean, on offense, you know, I can't wait for Jalen to prove them haters wrong as always. And get us back to the promised land. And yeah, I'm going to still be around. I'm still still around. Still giving wisdom, helping the guys. Because of course, it's an adjustment for me. But it's a greater adjustment. Because I mean, it's all about my kids and my family trying to make sure I'm there for that. And just making sure that we just spread in love everywhere. And so for me, I'm done. Just letting y'all know. So Jalen got to ask no bow. I'm ready to move on. And like you say, I got to pull my suit out. I got to change my uniform and get ready for what God has done. But you look like you could still play. You look like you could hit somebody. Don't hit me. I'm still training because that's just me.
I think I want to stay healthy. But I am excited for what's to come. So as you can hear there, pretty official. Brandon saying he is done playing football. Talks about how the team is in good hands saying, you know, Jordan Davis. Interesting player to pick when you consider Brandon was an edge. I know he played defensive tackle last year. But I think what he means is from a leadership perspective. Jordan Davis has that side of the ball in good hands. I also think he's a fan of Jordan Davis as a player. So gives a shout out to Jordan Davis. Gives a shout out to Jalen. I was listening and thinking, do you think it's annoying for Jalen whenever anyone talks to him? It's talks about him. It's like, and he's going to silence his haters. Like we can just say Jalen's an awesome quarterback. But I know what Brandon's getting at. Brandon has always been team Jalen. And as always had Jalen's back through all this. You know, I think in the AJ Jalen thing, Brandon was on Jalen's side. So regardless, this is not about Jalen. This is about Brandon. And Brandon now announcing his retirement officially for the second time. So what does this mean?
Well, first let's talk about if it is official. So over the weekend, Jimmy Kemsky, a Philly voice reported that the Eagles had made an offer to Brandon Graham. But it was for the that minimum and Brandon wanted more than that. And Brandon, you know, it's been, I think he said this publicly or has talked about it. Basically wanted training camp to get ready if he was going to play again. So a couple of aspects of that. The first one is I'm a little surprised. And obviously Jimmy's the goat. I trust Jimmy's reporting. I'm a little surprised Brandon had a chance to play and apparently turned it down because he wanted more money. I understand he has earned a certain level of respect with the organization. I understand perhaps the, you know, perhaps the emotional blow of taking a vet minimum when you're a franchise icon. You've played in the league for 16 years. I definitely get all that. I'm also a little surprised that, you know, an extra million dollars would keep Brandon from coming back if he wanted to play again. And really last year, it seemed like Brandon really enjoyed being back on the Eagles. The way he was in the locker room, just the joy on his face, which granted he always looks like he's in a good mood.
But the joy on his face, it seemed he seemed really, really happy. And it seemed like he wanted to play again. So the fact that there was apparently that opportunity and he didn't, he didn't take it is surprising. So, so there's that, right? There's that aspect of apparently Brandon had a chance to come back and he did not. The other part of it is could this be final? So last year Brandon was retired, right? Last year Brandon retired after the Super Bowl win didn't come back until the final 10 games of the season and ended up unretiring. So can that be completely ruled out? Well, I don't think so. I know he's saying he's officially done. Maybe he doesn't feel his body can do it again. But man, I think if it's like week five, six, seven and let's say God forbid knock on wood, the Eagles have suffered a bunch of injuries at the position. Are the Eagles willing to pay Brandon more? Would they just acquire somebody else at that point? I just think when the desire to play was so clear and he's done it again, that you can never fully rule it out.
But he is saying this is it. You hear him talk about his family. Maybe truly doesn't want to go through it again. If this is it, if this is the end for Brandon Graham and football, I mean, we did this pod last year, but still it is worth highlighting. I think he is the best edge in the history of Eagles football. Now a lot of people will say, well, what about Reggie White? What about Trent Cole? Right? What about guys like that? Well, I think those two were probably better players than Brandon was, right? Brandon has slow start to his career. He only had to double digit sack once. I think only made the pro bowl once. Like he didn't have the numbers Reggie White had. He didn't or he didn't have like the best player in the game that Reggie White had. If he didn't have the stats that Trent Cole had. But the reason I think he's the best edge. I'm not saying the most talented. I'm not saying any of that. I'm saying when I think of who deserves to represent the team as the best edge in franchise history, I think that's Brandon Graham. He won two Super Bowls. He only ever played here. He played 16 seasons played the most games in franchise history.
He is third on sat in sacks for what it's worth. It's not like, you know, he's 15th or 10th. Like now you could argue that stat compilation. And I think that's fair. But at the end of the day, he is still third in sacks overall. So top three in sacks at his position made the biggest play arguably in franchise history when he stripped a ball at Tom Brady's hand. And I also think there is something for just representing the franchise as like the one of the faces of the team for the last. I don't know 10 years 10 or 11 years like when you think of the Eagles, you think of Brandon. He's out in the public. He is awesome to interact with. He's great with fans. He talks all the time to the media. He did the branding Graham show on WIP for so many years like connecting with the fans, taking calls. So when I think of Brandon, I think of not only the best edge in Eagles history, I think he's on the Mount Rushmore. Like to me, who a person is matters when I talk when I talk about the Mount Rushmore, right? Trent Cole was probably a better edge than Brandon Graham. Trent Cole didn't win a Super Bowl here. He didn't really have any playoff meaningful moments.
Brandon, I think represents the team. So I put Brandon on there for the same reason I put Jason Kelsey on there. And then I have Brian Dawkins for obvious reasons. And I've jailed and hurts as a as the quarterback, the best quarterback in franchise history. So if there's truly is it for Brandon. And I know it loses its luster like this is must have been how Packers fans felt when Brett Farve unretired a bunch of times now granted he went and played for division rivals. But still, if this is the end for Brandon, I don't think the fact we've said it before should take away from what a huge day this is. This is a franchise icon, someone who has represented the team better than almost anybody in the history of the franchise has had huge moments has been there for the biggest moments of your Eagles fandom has caused some of the biggest, biggest most exciting moments of your Eagles fandom. The number 55 Jersey will never be worn again. He'll go into the Eagles Hall of Fame. His number will be retired. That is the level of player we're talking about here and the level of person. And you know, James brings us up a lot. You know, you want you want to like the people you root for, but ultimately it is just laundry and right, you're rooting for the team. I think what Brandon that was different. I have been that so many events with Brandon. I've seen the way he treats people. I've seen the way fans are when they get to meet him. And there is something really, really special about that. So for Brandon to retire today, I guess officially, however you want to say it, it's end of an era for Eagles football.
And it's sad, but also you feel really happy for Brandon that he ended up having the career he had and that he does get to now. It seems walk out on his own terms. So congrats Brandon. Great player, great career. Welcome to Elliott's Eagles Mount Rushmore Hall of Fame. Probably the thing he'll love in his career more than anything else. All right. So some other Eagles news before we get to previewing this matchup this week one matchup. I'm so excited we've actual football to talk about. Christian Gonzalez doesn't play for the Eagles. Christian Gonzalez signed a huge extension with the Patriots. It's been an offseason story all year. Christian Gonzalez gets four years 135 million dollars 102 million guaranteed. He gets a 33 million dollar signing bonus, which is the highest ever at the cornerback position in the deal. As you might imagine, the highest everything highest total, highest average, highest practical guarantee with 102 million in the history of the NFL for a cornerback. So the 30 I believe the average comes out to around 34 million. That can't be right.
I should have wrote down the average and also math as you know, there's two things I am not great at. Annunciating and math, just two things that I've been able to really master. So yeah, around 33 34 million dollars a year, which is the highest average and of course the guarantee in the total the highest as well. Now Christian Gonzalez, very good player. Second team all pro 2024 pro baller in 2025. Four interceptions in his career. So not a ton three in the regular season one in the playoffs. Didn't win a Super Bowl, but got there and it certainly wasn't his fault. They didn't win the Super Bowl. But he's been everything that the Patriots could have hoped with the pick. Now he does have an injury history suffered a dislocated shoulder and torn labor in 2023. But that doesn't prevent him from landing the highest deal. And he's been very healthy the past few seasons. So you might wonder why are we talking so much about Christian Gonzalez? Well, if I'm Quinion Mitchell Mitchell's agent, if I'm how he rose men, if I'm Quinion, this is big news. Now more deals will probably be signed between now and when Quinion pays, but not gets paid.
But honestly, there might not be many more like the season is starting Quinion. My guess is we'll get paid early on. Now we saw with Jalen Carter this off season, he didn't get paid until rip for training. Can't miss maybe they do wait on Quinion, but bottom line is I think Quinion will beat all of these numbers. I think you'll have a higher average. I think you'll have a higher guarantee. I think you'll have a higher total because he's a better player. He is like Patrick, I think you could argue still better than Quinion, like Derek Stingley, right? I don't think Christian Gonzalez is better than Quinion. Quinion was first team all pro in 2025. He was a pro bowler in 2025, obviously an unbelievable rookie season. One is super bowl. Now again, Christian Gonzalez got there, not his fault. They lost it, but Quinion did still win a Super Bowl. And then four career interceptions all in the playoffs. So none in the regular season, which is certainly part of it, but huge interceptions in the post season two in each of the last two in each of the last two years. So Quinion Mitchell, I think will get paid more than Christian Gonzalez. Now Christian Gonzalez is a very good player. I just think Quinion is better. And ultimately, I think that's how the Eagles will see it. I think that's how how we will see it. I think that's how clearly Quinion will see it. And I think he'll get paid a ton of money. So this is the benchmark now. Like when Quinion gets paid next year, he'll get more than a hundred and two million guaranteed. He'll get more than 135 million dollar extension and he'll get the $33 million signing bonus.
So congrats to Quinion on the deal that's upcoming. The real question here then becomes what about Cooper? And we have talked about Cooper quite a bit on this pod and what he could end up being paid. So Cooper Dijin doesn't play outside corner, right? He's not in that class when people talk about outside corners, but he is one of the best defensive players in the league. He is one of the best cornerbacks in the league when you think about playing nickel, obviously a majority of his time and playing safety. So he certainly has the, you know, all pros like those things, right? So Cooper Dijin has the resume. The question is how much will he get paid? And I think what he'll probably get is the highest paid safety money in the NFL plus some. I think he'll be a top six or seven paid corner in the NFL when how he says repeatedly the guys that you like on the roster that, you know, the fans have their jerseys. He's talking about Quinion and Cooper, I think, right? He's talking about players that fans go, oh, will they pay him? Yeah, they're going to pay him. It's two of the biggest draft success stories and franchise history. It is the fact they were both in the same class, the fact that they both play cornerback, the fact that they're like so close. I mean, it's just unbelievable for the team.
So I think they will pay Cooper a ton of money. They will pay Quinion a ton of money. And Christian Gonzalez helping to set the tone or the floor, I guess I should say, for what those what those contracts will be. All right, on the other side, why don't we talk a little football? Let's talk about the Eagles wide receivers versus the Washington defensive backs, but first a word from our sponsors. Okay, who's ready to talk some football? We got a week one game coming up, Eagles versus commanders, and what a matchup it is. And it's actually a pretty good matchup, I think, for this Eagles offense to get things going. Now throughout the week, we'll talk about the Eagles offensive line versus the Washington defensive line. There are some injury issues there for Washington that could potentially impact who plays who doesn't will of course impact the matchup. So we'll probably get into that a little bit later in the week. But in terms of a back seven for this Eagles passing attack to kind of get their first go against, I think it's a really good matchup. Washington's back seven just really lacks talent, right? Like I think the linebacker is sunny styles, Frankie Luvio, Frankie Luvio, obviously Eagles in the Eagles kind of legend for the way that he jumped over the push a bunch of times, right?
Like not a great player, but certainly a name everybody knows sunny styles and awesome player out of Ohio State, but still a rookie first career NFL game. I think you'll be a great player first game. You like that matchup in terms of maybe he's over anxious, you can trick them on certain things and all that. So I think from a linebacker perspective, you think about the tight ends, the running backs, then you can really get them, right? Like I think Frankie Luvio, first of all, you can definitely get, but sunny styles because like I just said, he'll be over anxious, he'll be going trying to make plays. It'll be a thousand miles a minute. I think you can really get the best of him as well. So I think from a linebacker perspective, it's a good matchup. But what we're really going to talk about here is the Eagles receivers versus the Washington cornerback. So who are the Washington cornerbacks? Let's dig into who will be starting for him. Now worth noting that their number one corner, Trey Amos is not playing in this game. He is on IR due to an ankle injury. He's their best corner. They won't have them. Obviously huge news for the Eagles. You would assume Trey Amos probably would have followed Devante. I don't know if he's done a follow ton of following from, you know, sideline to sideline in his career.
But tons of, you know, he would have been the number one corner covering Devante. So Devante now gets a much easier matchup with the real, with the Washington really not having a number one corner. So the four guys I would expect to play the most Mike San Restill, Rasool Douglas, Fabian Moro and Amique Robertson, who will be the nickel. So let's talk about each of them. Mike San Restill, familiar name for Eagles fans. If they played against them. Second round pick in 2024 510, 182 pounds. He's played a ton of thousand plus snaps each of the last two seasons. He plays on the outside. He plays the slot. He played the slot to start last year eventually moved to the outside because he was struggling in the slot. He's somebody that's not played well, but has played a lot of football last year. Last year a corner pro football focus 103rd out of 107 corners in coverage. So had a really bad year last year. And the fact that they moved him around really does show like they were trying to find a home where he could be successful. Like put yourself in the, you know, there's shoes as the Eagles. If the Eagles drafted player in the second round and you were trying, you know, trying to get him successful trying to get good snaps from out on the field. You'd move him around. If you found a home you think he was good at you would keep him there.
So undersized basically ways as much as Devonte. Like good matchup for Devonte if they can get him across from Mike Sandristell. Ressoul Douglas, another name very familiar for Eagles fans. Obviously for different reasons. Ressoul Super Bowl champion. Ressoul Douglas was with Miami last year. Has really kind of bounced around since he left the Eagles was with Buffalo. Was with the Panthers. I believe he was with the Packers for a little bit if I'm not mistaken. But he's had a good career. Like I think Ressoul Douglas is a pretty good player. Last year 24th overall coverage. According to pro football focus he has seven interceptions to pass three seasons 21 interceptions in nine years. So he is somebody that knows how to get the football. And the reason I think that's a worrisome thing for the first game is we saw all the interceptions in training camp. And I think there will be miscommunications and there will be balls that are maybe thrown by Jalen in the right spot. But the receivers right not there. He puts it in a spot where he thinks it should be in the receiver thinks it should be somewhere else. You know, we saw drops right Don Tavine Wicks the ball bouncing off of his hand.
So I think there's going to be opportunities to come away with the football. And I think Ressoul Douglas is shown he is very good at that. Ressoul Douglas also bigger than Mike San Ressoul. So I think that you know from a physical standpoint like he's better. He's a better matchup for Washington against on TV and Wicks. But I also think like with how much the ball is going to be being thrown towards Devon Tav. If I'm Washington. I don't hate the Ressoul Douglas matchup. He's big. He's physical. He makes plays on the football. So interesting matchup potentially there for the Eagles. Those will be the two outside corners. It seems like obviously week one. We won't know for sure. But that seems like there'll be the top two outside corners. Then there's Fabian Moro Fabian Moro started with Washington all day back in 2017. Was there for four seasons and bounced around Atlanta the Giants Broncos Vikings. He was with the Washington Washington's a new defensive coordinator and Toronto Jones who comes from Minnesota Fabian Moro was with was with Toronto Jones in Minnesota. So has not been very good has had an up and down career didn't play much last year does have some familiarity with the new defensive coordinator. So Fabian Moro another name to keep an eye on. And then there's a meek Robinson. Good player right good. Good player can play all over played with Detroit last year has played out wide. He's played in the slot. He played both last year.
And throughout his career he's been able to play both. So those will be your four corners and then it's safety Nick Cross was with my in the inapolis the last four seasons only five starts in four years. And Jeremy Reeves all the way back from Eagles and camp with the Eagles eight starts last year 19 starts in eight years. So they don't have great safeties. They don't have great depth there. They just don't have playmakers at safety. DSW, let us surprise you. And then like I said, Rassool Douglas can make plays but outside of that like a meek Robertson, you know, we'll see where they line him up. Maybe they will put him on the outside. You know, they have that week one element of surprise. He's a good player. He's definitely somebody, you know, I kind of view this as like with the Eagles have interest in him. And now they have Cooper. So I understand they wouldn't. But a meek Robinson, I think is a player that Eagles would like in midnight green.
He seems like a big fan. Joe guy seems like a Nick guy. So a meek Robertson definitely, you know, a player for jail and a keep an eye out for. So in terms of will you want to pass the ball against Washington. Well, like I said, I mean, these matchups are good matchups, right? Like Rassool Douglas first on TV and Wix. The size there. I think Wix is a, you know, not the biggest wide receiver, but he plays physical Rassool Douglas. That could be a good matchup for the Eagles. You love Devonte versus San Restil. If that's the matchup they can get. And then we'll see who lines up at nickel. Like if it's McCoy lemon, that's a tough matchup. A meek Robertson's physical veteran knows all the tricks and trades. Like that's a tough matchup for McCoy lemon. Darius Cooper bigger, probably able to deal with the physicality a little bit more. But he, you know, I think it's a tough matchup as well. So the good news is when we get into this with the Washington off defensive line, I think the Eagles will give jail and time in the pocket. So I think if you give jail and time, you can pick apart this secondary, especially you look at some of the safeties. I think there could be some deep shots available there. You know, I know everyone wants to see crossing routes, crossing routes, crossing routes. But if you can get Devonte isolated, I'm absolutely sending him deep. If they do shade a safety over towards the Vonte, like these are winnable matchups, right? Rassool and Don Taving Wix. I think Don Taving Wix can win that matchup. It's the lemon and the Darius Cooper you're a little worried about. But even Hollywood Brown, I think I'll get out on the field.
Elijah Moore potentially could get out on the field. And if they do, I like them going deep. I like their veteran, you know, game versus some of these other corners. Like I said, Amie Robinson, a, a, a nickel corner, but also somebody that has played a long time. So Amie Robinson versus Hollywood or Elijah, I call that basically a draw. Amie Robinson versus McCoy. I give him a tie the edge there. But I think the Eagles have the advantage on the outside. And I hate selling a broken record, but the key here is going to be, you know, taking care of the ball and making sure you're not putting it in in the wrong way because we're so Douglas is somebody that can make you pay for that. So I would say the Eagles receivers have the advantage versus the Washington Secondary. And you know, if you listen to me, all the way to training camp, not huge on the receiving unit, they've had really good practices and times, but overall, you certainly go into the season with a lot of questions. So I will give the Eagles receivers the advantage versus the Washington Secondary because by the way, the Washington Secondary, comprised mostly of the same people again, a different, a different
coordinator, but they were terrible last year. You look at passing plays of 40 plus yards, they gave up the third most passing plays of 20 plus yards. They gave up the 12th most passing yards per game, 31st in the league, you know, in yards per game. And then also 31st in the league and yards per attempt giving up almost eight or just over seven yards per attempt. So yeah, I think they have the advantage when it comes to this. And so an Eagles passing game that really really does need a good first game. We talked a lot more about that. I say, like, I'm not talking about the Eagles, but the Eagles are going to play the game a lot more and then they'll be playing for the third time. So I think that's a lot more for me, and the Eagles are going to play the game a lot more. So I think that's a really good thing to do. And I think the Eagles are going to play the game a lot more and I think that's a lot more for the Eagles, I think a little bit on the pod with James, whether it's a must win game or not. I think they need a good first game. This is a matchup for them to do it. So for what needs to be a good introduction to the season, vibes are good, you can't really struggle. I think this is a good matchup. So that'll do it for today's daily pod. Thank you guys as always for listening. I'm excited for this week. We're gonna have a lot to talk about. So until next time, he's Elliot. I'm James. Talk to you guys later. Don't burn! Don't burn!
