Bugle, A Puppy in Old Yorktown

About this episode

This illustrated children's book, titled Bugle, A Puppy in Old Yorktown, follows the journey of a young boy named Andy Archer and his energetic dog during the American Revolution. As British forces approach their home in Virginia, Andy's family must flee to the safety of a relative's farm while his father stays behind to work. Throughout their displacement, the mischievous puppy causes trouble but eventually proves his worth by alerting the family to the presence of enemy soldiers. The narrative concludes with the American victory and a celebratory reunion where General George Washington praises the small dog's brave spirit. By blending historical events with a relatable animal adventure, the source provides a youthful perspective on the final major conflict of the war for independence.

It's all about a little puppy named Bugle. What a fun name. And look, there he is. That's our little friend Bugle. He's about to go on a really big adventure. Are you ready to find out what happens? Okay, let's get comfy and begin. So here we go. Our story starts right here where we get to meet a puppy named Bugle. Look at this. This is a boy named Andy. And who's that he's playing with? It's his new puppy Bugle. They're having so much fun on the pretty green grass. But oh my goodness, Bugle has a very big bark. It sounds like this. Woof woof! Uh oh, do you hear that? That's Andy's mommy calling from the house. She's saying, Andrew, can you please keep that puppy quiet? It sounds like Bugle's loud barking woke up the baby.

Oh dear, let's whisper. Shh, Bugle. Be a quiet puppy. So Bugle has to be quiet for now. But I wonder what's going to happen next? Let's turn the page and see. Whoa, what was that sound? It was a really loud boom. It sounded like a giant drum being hit somewhere far away. I wonder what that could be. Oh, look who just ran inside. It's father. And he looks like he's in a big hurry. He's telling everyone that it's time to pack up and go on a trip. They're going to grandma's farm where it's quiet and safe. Aw, father is giving everyone big warm goodbye hugs before he has to leave. And listen to this. Andy tells his father, don't worry. I'll be the man of the family and take care of everyone. Doesn't he sound so brave? And look, even little Bugle is helping. He gives a little, yep, yep, like he's promising to help too. Okay, everyone is getting into the wagon.

Let's see what happens on their long, bumpy ride. Clip clop, clip clop. That's the sound of the horse's feet. And the wagon is going bumpy, bump down the road. But wait, oh, look at Bugle. That silly puppy just jumped out of the wagon. Now he's barking at that big brown ox. Woof, woof, he says. Oh, Bugle. Oh, that silly, silly puppy. Now Bugle has run right inside a store. Andy has to run in after him. Bugle, come back here. Andy is calling. It looks like they're playing a little game of chase among all the baskets. Yay, they finally made it. Here they are at grandma's pretty farm. Look at all that green grass for running. And there goes Bugle. He looks so happy running and jumping and chasing that pretty butterfly. What a fun place. Now this part of the story is very important. Because we're about to find out how Bugle became a very, very brave dog. So one day while they're at the farm, they hear a strange noise.

Hmm, what could that be? And then Bugle starts to bark. Not a little puppy bark, but his biggest, loudest, bravest bark ever. Woof, woof, woof. Oh my goodness, look, it was some soldiers wearing red coats. And they were not being nice at all. They were trying to sneak away with grandma's chickens. But Bugle's super loud barking scared them right away. Look at them run. Andy is just so proud of his puppy. He runs over and gives Bugle the biggest hug. You are such a good dog, Bugle, he says. You see, this time his big bark wasn't naughty, it was brave. He was being a wonderful watchdog. And now we've come to the happiest part of the whole story. It's time for everyone to go back home. Here comes a man on a horse and he has some very happy news. He's telling everyone that the big battle is all over. It's finally safe to go home. Andy is so excited he could do a little dance. He can't wait to see his father again. And look, walking right towards them, it's father.

Oh, everyone is so happy. They're all getting big warm hugs. And father says, you know, I heard Bugle's happy barking from far away. And it helped me find you. Father is so, so proud of their little puppy. He smiles and says, Bugle is a real Yankee doodle dog. And you know, that's a very special name for a hero who is brave and smart. Bugle is a hero. And Andy gives his little puppy hero the biggest snuggliest squeeze. He probably whispered, oh, Bugle, you are the very best dog in the whole wide world. And he was, wasn't he? He was a very good and very brave little puppy. The end. Thank you for listening to our story.
