CHAMPS: Gonzaga's national title hopes REST on Braden Huff and Massamba Diop! What holds them back?

1:04home at the McCarthy Athletics Center. We're going to talk about that game, the opponent and the fact that the schedule is now potentially done, at least with a couple of exhibition games potentially still going to get added. But other than that, they might be done. We'll talk about that to close out the show. First, first two segments of the show are pretty simple. We're going to talk about why this team can win a national championship, why this team cannot win a national championship. And obviously, a big part of the story here is the roster and the specifically which players will actually be on the roster or not. That has been the talking point for the entirety of the off season. Since the season ended against Texas in the round of 32 until now Gonzaga has not had a full roster. They did for nearly 24-ish hours after Xavier and Lee committed before Skylarwix D committed. But again, even that brief 24 hour window, Gonzaga's quote unquote full roster featured an ineligible Javan Bennett and two international players who have yet to be cleared for eligibility

2:05in Nathan D'Souza and Eson Amonsa. So as easy as it would be for this conversation to be why they can win a championship, everybody's eligible, why they can't win a championship, not everybody's eligible. That's not particularly interesting. We know that there are ongoing eligibility concerns for at this point five of the players that are expected to be on Gonzaga's roster this year. That would be the two international's Nathan D'Souza and Eson Amonsa as well as the three five and five seniors Javan Bennett, Chancy Wiggins from Florida State and Xavier on Lee from Florida. So those are the five players that are in eligibility limbo. Unfortunately, two of them Wiggins and Lee are eligible, the other three are not. But we're going to take this conversation as if Gonzaga does have their complete roster. Why this roster, if everybody is eligible, is capable of winning a national championship, why this roster, if everybody is eligible, maybe is not capable of competing for national championship. Because otherwise the conversation just becomes predictable and again, not particularly

3:07interesting. From that angle, obviously with the caveat being that we don't know exactly where that eligibility is going to land for these five players. And there's the real possibility that it changes during the season as well. Why this team can win a national championship? They have a top 10 roster in college basketball. Top five is arguable, but there is a very legitimate argument for this roster being top five in the country with teams like Florida and Virginia and Duke and Illinois and Yukon. And of course, a couple of others in that conversation. Louisville has a great roster right now as well. Top 10 at worst roster in the sport with a Hall of Fame coach with a tough schedule that will have this team back all tested from the beginning of the season all the way through Till March, because they're in a tougher conference in the back 12. And with a lot of veteran players on the roster. Those are a lot of key reasons. To me, the number one thing, most compelling argument for this team is actually one that

4:12isn't as predicated on the eligibility status for this team. That's the front court. This starting front court tandem in particular of returning senior Bradenhof and Arizona state transfer, Missamma Jop is outrageously good. I think Florida is probably the toughest front court in the sport because they returned to everybody for the last two years, including the year they won a national championship. But frankly, Gonzaga is not far behind them. Jop andhof fit together like a glove. Jop's a seven foot one big man. He is an elite rim protector. He's a good screen center. He's a good rim runner. He's efficient around the rim. He's got a little bit of a mid range to his game. He can step out all the way to the three point line as well. Very, very good athlete. Hopefully the best rim protector Gonzaga has had since Chet Homgren and the best they've had in the last decade outside of Homgren and Brandon Clark. He is terrific at altering shots at the rim and it's something Gonzaga has dearly missed on this roster since Homgren's departure four years ago.

5:16Meanwhile, Huff was in the middle of a breakout season last year and it hasn't been a huge storyline. This offseason nationally that Huff is back and the old reports, Mark, you said this at the Hall of Fame induction a few weeks ago. Huff is healthy. He's 100 percent. In fact, the team posted social media graphics today as I'm recording this on Thursday of Huff working out on the floor doing drills. He didn't look like he was limited whatsoever. So he is fine. He's back due to average 18 and 5 and a half rebounds per game last year. His 17.8 points per game was 69 and a half percent on two pointers, 33 percent from three, 37 point game. This dude is a phenomenal score. He's got a leap foot footwork around the rim. He's a dynamic score in the short role. He can get all the way to the rim. He's again, an array of post moves can finish with either hand just very, very, very gifted score with elite touch around the basket. Who can step out a little bit as well? Those two players combined are outrageously good.

6:16And if Esan Almanza is on this squad as well, he's a great rebounder, which really helps in that front court. We'll talk about rebounding in a bit. Good low post score as well. You have great depth options in Jefferson and Funches. Hard not to like what this front court looks like for Gonzaga. And I think is a huge part of why this team is capable of making a very deep run in March. They're also very experienced. And again, this is going to be predicated on the seniors. But with if you have four potential players from the high school class of 2022, that would of course be Lee, Wiggins, and Bennett, as well as Braden Huff, who redshirted his first year. That's a dynamic veteran group of players. They're young, otherwise. But again, DeSus is 23 coming over from France. He's new to college basketball, but 23 year old point guard with professional experience. Almanza is a 21 year old forward with professional experience. Fogel and Jefferson are familiar with the system. You have a lot of experience and veteran presence on this roster.

7:16Between two point guards who are class of 2022 and a third point guard who's 23 years old would be a huge benefit for Gonzaga experienced guard play wins in March. When we talk about this every year, unlocked on college basketball, Gonzaga's best teams. I know Jalen Suggs was a freshman, but Andrew Nemhard was a veteran. He was an experienced player. Aaron Cook, their third string point guard that year was an experienced player. Like you need. And then of course the 2016 17 team, Nigelium's, Goss and Josh Perkins were both very experienced players. And he has a huge, huge thing for Gonzaga to have coming into this season. And then just the balance. You have interior scoring, but you also have slashing from Davis Fogel. You have facilitating from Lee and to a lesser extent, but still an extent Bennett. You have great transition scoring. So many of these guys have been elite getting out and running off of mishats, off of turnovers, even off of made baskets. Defensively you have rim protection and you have perimeter defense. Isaiah Harwell, really good on ball defender out on the exterior.

8:16You have physicality, you have strength down on the interior as well. Again, there's not a lot of weaknesses. There's not a lot of glaring holes on this roster. And when you combine that with the experience level that this team has, when you combine that with the just unbelievable scoring and overall balance of that front court in particular. And of course, one of the best coaches to ever do it, hanging out on the sideline. And again, we mentioned the schedule and some other kind of aspects of this as well. Yeah, this team is National Championship Calibre. They can win it all. They do have the right pieces, the right recipe, the right skill set on both ends of the floor, the right person making the moves and the decisions and pulling the strings. To be somebody that can compete with the dukes and the Illinois and the Virginians and the Florida's and Yukon's of the world to potentially get this team, the coveted, highly coveted, very, very kind of only thing really missing from Mark Fuse trophy case at this point is that National Championship trophy.

9:18And this is absolutely a team capable of doing it. Now even if Gonzaga does get this entire roster eligible, they may be in the conversation for the National Championship, but that doesn't mean there aren't some concerns. So we're going to talk about a few of the things that might be holding this team back from potentially being a National Championship contender, all that coming up here in just a second. 11:20They're ability to compete to win this whole thing in 2027. We are speaking about them as if their roster is currently constructed. Is the roster that they will carry into this upcoming season, of course, five of the players that are committed to the program are in eligibility limbo. Three are currently in eligible in Dayton, Garjavon Bennett, as well as the two international in Nathan, D'Souza and Esan Almanza. While Chancy Wiggins and Xavier and Lee are potentially going to have their eligibility challenged, if the NCAA is granted a stay in the lawsuits in Georgia and California respectively. There are things we're certainly keeping an eye on. But right now, looking at this roster, if it is able to be this roster for the upcoming 2627 season, there are a lot of reasons to believe this team is absolutely capable, maybe more than capable of winning a national championship. But even in that scenario where everybody plays, there are enough concerns that could hold this team back. I'm going to take a look at what a couple of those are right now.

12:20Obviously the eligibility is the big one. We're not going to dive into that. We know that that is a factor and that if two, three, four, five of these guys are eligible and then ineligible and bouncing around their eligibility, that's going to cause a significant turmoil to this roster and a challenge for the coaching staff and very much could and would likely impact significantly their chances of winning a national championship. But other things outside of that, we're going to start here because it is relevant to that, because kind of the camaraderie, the familiarity, the kind of experience playing with each other because Conzeca hasn't really gotten that and that's what made Mario St. Superior's departure so significant. Jack Cahill's departure was significant as well. The Cahill hadn't been working out with the team and at the time that he left was still before the team was going to get together and start their summer workout series. So he never teammates never adjusted to him and started getting used to him and then had to backtrack on that. That did happen with Mario. His timing in mid-July meant that the team had been working out, he'd been working out

13:22at the facility. His teammates who were there last year, Huff and Fogel were getting used to him but so was Luca Foster, so was Sam Funches, so were Missamba Jop and Isaiah Harwell and then all of that was ended up not being useful because Mario ended up departing the program. Now you have a group that has been together in Jop and Harwell and Fogel and Huff in particular are four guys who have been together all summer. They've been working out together and they're all going to be, if not starters, incredibly key parts of Gonzaga's rotation this upcoming season. Luca Foster, Sam Funches, Partler Jefferson and now most recently, Juanacanga, how I have all been together as well and out of that group, really only Foster is I think strongly competing for a spot in the rotation and he's not going to start and frankly it's possible he ends up kind of on the outside of that rotation depending on the status of Wiggins and a couple other pieces as well but the team hasn't got to work out with Xavier only. They haven't got to work out with Javan Bennett. They haven't got to work out with Chancy Wiggins or Isanamasa or Nathan D'Souza.

14:26There are three point guards committed to be on this roster and Davis Fogel hasn't played with any of them and Isaiah Harwell and Braden Huff and Missamba Jop, they haven't played with any of them. It's undeniable that that is a problem and even if tomorrow every one of these players gets granted eligibility and there's just no question going forward. An absolute best case scenario that is extraordinarily unlikely with how hell bent the NCAA is on fighting this but if there is a reality where that happens, they still will not have had very much time together and that will be a challenge that this team will have to overcome. It's why the exhibition game on the road against Arkansas is so important. It's why the fact that you can schedule three exhibition games now up from two is important. We're going to talk scheduling in the final segment but I think Gonzaga needs critically needs to use all three of those exhibition games because it's important to get this team together and jelling in game situations as much as you possibly can before the game start counting in the standings. It's not catastrophic if you lose to Purdue in the first game of the season but if your

15:31team is still jelling to the point where it costs you games against Purdue and LSU and maybe early last players are a festival or UCLA like if you're struggling to win games because your team hasn't played together enough, you may still be able to gel and find your way and get hot coming into the tournament but your seeding is going to be impacted. A lot harder to win a national championship as a three seed than it is as a one seed or as a six seed than it is as a four seed, whatever it may be. So for Gonzaga, this is going to be something that will hurt them in their quest to win a national championship and the longer that this goes on without these guys being able to play and practice with the team or the more times that they're in and out of practices because of constant changes in their lawsuits, the worst this is going to be for this X. Other more practical on-floor concerns for this roster outside of that kind of camaraderie and eligibility piece of things, three point shooting and rebounding. We'll start with three point shooting.

16:32Last year was the worst three point shooting season in Markfew's entire tenure as the head coach at Gonzaga. By percentage, they were the worst three point shooting team he has ever coached and it's one of those things where I don't say that stat expecting it to shock you. If you watched this team last year, you probably thought they were the worst three point shooting team that you have ever seen at Gonzaga. It's nice to know that you were right. They were awful. They had very few reliable three point shooters. Guys, they expected to be helpful in that regard. Like Adam Miller in particular, we're not able to contribute. Braden Smith was not a good three point shooter. Davis Fogel was fine, but on a very low volume. Ty and Grant Foster was pretty egregious as a three point shooter. They just did not have a good season. The two best three point shooters on the roster were Mario, St. Superior and Steel Ventors. Who are gone? He lost your two best three point shooters from a terrible three point shooting team and the replacements by and large haven't been great three point shooters.

17:35The first two transfers you landed this year, Jop and Harwell. Now, Jops is seven foot one big man. You don't need him to be shooting three. He's 31%. That's not bad for his position, but he's not contributing to you much in that area. Harwell as a six foot six guard was 27% from three last year. I think he'll approve upon that, but probably not going to shoot 40%. That would be a massive change. Maybe he shoots 35. Maybe he gets into that range, but he has not proven to be a good three point shooter. Fogel was 35 on low volume. Like we said, maybe that's maybe steps up there. Foster scouted as a good three point shooter has looked impressive in camp so far. Maybe he steps into a role where he can contribute in that area. But the three point shooting on this roster is questionable. Now you get the five and five guys coming in and one player in particular is critically important from a floor pacing perspective. And that is Chancy Wiggins. Chancy Wiggins coming over from Florida State six foot ten forward, but do not mistake him for a big man.

18:37He is a three. He is a six foot ten guard wing player trapped in that body. The same way that Kyle Wiltshire was when he was at Gonzaga a little over a decade ago. We can shot 39% from three last year with the seminoles on six attempts per game. That is a high volume and an elite efficiency. Chancy Wiggins is a dynamic three point shooter has the potential to be one of the best single season three point shooters Gonzaga has ever had. If he is eligible, it is a critical part of Gonzaga's offense. His ability to space the floor, pull defenses away from the middle, give more driving lanes for Lee, more driving lanes for Fogel, more room for a job and and have to have their two man game or for one of them to operate with the ball in their hands down on the block. All of that is predicated on Wiggins being a nuclear three point set threat from the perimeter. Because they don't have anybody else outside of maybe foster who can be that guy. If you're playing Fogel and Harwell together, Fogel Harwell Lee together with the two bigs, those get the teams are going to pack the paint.

19:43I mean, they're just going to throw everybody in the paint, make life miserable for Huff and deop trying to even catch the basketball and then trying to move with the basketball. And every part of Gonzaga's offense tells you if you're in that situation and they're packing the paint to kick it out and shoot and make the defense come out and guard you. Well, if you can't shoot, it's not going to solve your problems. We saw that last year with Gonzaga's lost to Portland. We saw that in the lost to Texas. We saw that in some of the really hideously ugly wins like against the out of you at home in San Francisco at home and a few others as well. This, this roster doesn't conclusively look better in that area and that is a concern outside of that. You also have rebounding and I'm less concerned about the rebounding, but I wanted to at least mention it. Neither Huff or deop are great rebounders. Deop was like under six rebounds per game last year. He was in a tougher conference in the big 12. He was a first year player at the collegiate level. I think he's a better rebounder than the numbers gave, but it is still something he needs to prove. He needs to every other part of his game look really complete last year, but the rebounding wasn't quite there.

20:48Huff has never been a great rebounder. He's fine. He's a better offensive rebounder than a defensive rebounder. But those two guys combine the only real weakness they have is that rebounding. That's what makes Almanza so valuable. He's a very good rebounder. I think if he gets eligible and is able to contribute, he really helps because he can sub in for either Huff or deop and make the team better on the glass. Fogo becomes very important as a rebounding wing. Wiggins has never been a great rebounder. He's going to need to step up in that space as well. Harwell needs to step up. He's a good rebounder at point guard, but this is not an area of strength for Gonzaga. I don't think it's a significant weakness. I think they are closer to average than they are bad as a rebounding team, but not a lot of national champions are average as a rebounding team. So that is an area that they will need to prove they can be better at in order to win this whole thing in 2027. Well, we said we talked about scheduling. We're going to get to that now. Gonzaga added a fifth non-conference home game. We're going to discuss the new opponent and the whole of the non-conference late now that 15 games are on the board.

23:50Not the show talking about another game added a non-conference schedule for Mark few and the Gonzaga Bulldog to see a flurry of scheduling notes for the Zags as of late. Of course, confirmation on their game against Oregon at climate pledge arena in late January. That was most recent. There really a lot of the updates we've had scheduling wise are the buy games. The games that Gonzaga brings teams that usually get cut them a nice check to bring these teams from wherever they are to spoke and to play the team at the McCarthy Athletics Center. Right now, Gonzaga has 15 non-conference game scheduled. 10 of them are against power conference opponents. The other five are the true home games for this team. They will play five times at the McCarthy Athletics Center this season before Pac-12 play gets underway. And the fifth game, the final one that has been added. This is reported by Rocco Miller of Bracketeer.org who posted all of the Pac-12 non-conference schedules on his website. Go check it out if you haven't yet. It's fantastic. Really good update there.

24:50This was the lone game that was on that schedule that hadn't been reported yet. It is against incarnate word. The game does not have an official date. It was reported by Rocco and I check with him to confirm that it is either going to be November 10th or November 11th, which is kind of the most likely time we thought another game would be added to the schedule because Gonzaga is playing in Spokane against New Mexico State on November 7th. And then they're playing in Spokane at the Spokane Arena on November 14th against LSU. So that's a Saturday and then the following Saturday. So you don't typically see especially now with a 16 game non-conference late. You're not going to see a full week off in early November when this team is trying to get their feet under them. So it always made sense that there would be a game added in between there. And right now it's either it's basically going to be right in between those two games, whether it's on that the 10th or the 11th still up in the air at this point. And current word has been a member of the Division 1 ranks since 2013. They have competed in the Southland conference. They're based in San Antonio, Texas area.

25:51They have had one winning season since 2016 when they first came to the D1 ranks. They won. They had a winning record in three straight years. Since then they've only had one winning record last year. They finished tied for ninth in the Southland. Did not even make their conference tournament. So not not a particularly great team. Gonzaga has played them once. That was back in 2017. They won that game 103 to 68. Was a dominant performance by Gonzaga. And that one, Hatchimera had team high 18 off the bench. Current Gonzaga assistant coach Zach Norvel had 17 points in that game as well. So we would expect probably a similar result between Gonzaga and current word this year as well. Zags only have one semi sort of player connection between these two programs. Skylar Wix, who was committed to Gonzaga in late June and recently decommitted about a week two weeks ago or so ago. He actually played at Incarnate Word in the 2324 season. We're average about 14 points and six and a half boards. But obviously never actually suited up for Gonzaga. So not a super strong connection there, but thought it would at least point it out.

26:53Since Wix has been on the radar as of late. So this becomes Gonzaga's fifth non-conference home game. Again, 15th total the home games for Gonzaga. We talked new Mexico state, the home opener November 7th. Then again, Incarnate Word will be four or five days later on November 10 or three or four days later. November 10th or 11th. And then after that they will take on Montana State on November 17th. First match up against the Bobcats since 1997. Then a couple weeks later they'll take on Eastern Oregon. Eastern Oregon's an NAIA school, but that game is going to officially count in the standings for Gonzaga, even though it is next edition for Eastern Oregon. That game is on December 2nd. And then their next home game will be the end of the month. December 31st, New Year's Eve, Gonzaga taking on an Ivy League school in Cornell. The big red and opponent Gonzaga has actually never faced before. That'll be the final game of the 2026 year. But not their final non-conference game as Gonzaga has 10 total non-conference games against power

27:56conference opponents. Two of them which are taking place during the Pac-12 season. That is of course the game against Oregon on January 30th at Climate Play Jirina. And the big one against Duke February 20th. That game at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan. Other non-conference games for Gonzaga, they're starting the season against Purdue on November 2nd. That game will be at the team mobile arena in Las Vegas. Then they'll take on LSU at the Spokane Arena on November 14th. They'll take on UCLA at the Honda Center in Anaheim on December 5th. Seven straight year. Those two teams have played each other. Then they'll play their only road game. They have five home games, nine neutral site games, one true road game in the non-conference. That's their trip to Omaha, Nebraska to take on the blue jays of creating a return of a home and home series started last year. That game will be December 12th. And then Gonzaga will also take on Michigan State in the Hall of Fame classic on December 19th at the Acresure Arena in Palm Springs, California. And of course, Gonzaga also going to participate in the players,

28:59Araf Festival in Las Vegas taking on Kansas State to open up that event on November 24th. We'll play either Baylor or Alabama on November 26th. And then one of TCU Miami Creighton or Michigan on November 27th. That's a schedule right now. 15 games they're allowed up to 16. However, in the players Araf Festival, should they beat Kansas State? Should they beat either Alabama or Baylor? Should they then beat one of the other four teams that they would play? They would then play a fourth game in the players Araf Festival, which would put them up to 16 games. So it is possible that Gonzaga does not schedule another game that we have that this non-conference schedule is now finalized. I don't know that 100%. I believe they could still schedule another game. They don't have to keep that game open theoretically. But I'm not sure that they will. Now, I do think those schedule exhibition games right now. They have won that is a game at Arkansas on October 24th. And I'm so pumped they're playing this game. I think it's a brilliant decision to go play in a hostile road environment

30:02against a good team in a game that doesn't matter whether you lose or not. That game is on October 24th. The season opener is November 2nd. I think there will be another exhibition game in between that. Probably the 28th, 29th, one of those days. I would expect an exhibition game. I would expect that to be a home exhibition game and probably against a either non-D1 opponent or a weaker division one opponent. Then they have a third exhibition game. I'm not sure what they're going to do with that if they're going to play it earlier like October 16th, 18th, something like that. If they're not going to play it at all, whether they're going to play another marquee opponent, a mediocre opponent, a non-D1 opponent. I don't know. I don't know what they're going to do. I would like to see them play one like tune up game. Like the game of the 28th or 29th. I'd love that to be like a Western organ with worth, you know, somebody like that, a non-D1 opponent. Then I'd love their first one if it's going to be played on the 18th or 17th. To be like, I'd love for it to be a WCC school. I think it'd be great to play like see how do you or San Francisco or Santa Claire or somebody like that. I don't think it will.

31:03I think that would be cool, a good test for this team. I would love to at least see that be a D1 game. So you play a D1 opponent, then you play Arkansas, then you get your tune up game, then you get into the season on November 2 against the boilers in Vegas. That's how I would like to see them use that exhibition slate. But right now it sure feels like that non-companied schedule might be completely done and dusted for the Zags at this point. They have not have these revealed anything or released anything. But that if we're not there yet, we're very, very close to have any full look at that schedule.
