Hello, everybody, and welcome to another edition of charts with Dan. Do not check your calendars. It is a Thursday. I was away in Los Angeles this past weekend. I was traveling on Tuesday. Couldn't get the show done for yesterday. So we are talking about this past weekend's box office closer to this upcoming weekend's box office. But that's okay, because while we are going to talk about box office numbers, we're also going to devote the bulk of this show to a recap of summer 2026. Summer saying it's the highest grossing summer of all time. And we're going to look at those numbers as well as the biggest hits, the biggest
flops, all kinds of stuff to get to. But before we do that, let's briefly go over or as briefly as I can go over the Labor Day box office here in the United States. And we'll start with the three day weekend. This is the Friday through Sunday numbers. Spider-Man Brand New Day spent a sixth week at number one with 18.1 million dollars. It's now at 917 million. Or actually, I should say was through Sunday the Odyssey dropping just 8.8 percent over the previous three day weekend coming in second place with 13 million dollars. Coyote versus Acme also holding well over the three day Labor Day weekend. It dropped just 24.8 percent to bring in 11.9 million dollars. I'm happy to see it doing so well in its second weekend by any means the new historical drama starring Yaya Abdul-Mateen the second and Mark Wahlberg opens in fourth place with $7.5 million in city. As out of the further comes in fifth place with $6.5 million. Then we have the 20th anniversary believe it or not of cars coming in sixth place at 6.3 million. But he and this is always great news for
a smaller limited release actually increased in business from its first weekend to its second weekend. It added theaters based on its strong opening and the positive audience response. So it came in at 5.8 million in seventh place. Happy to see that movie. It's a really unique film. Glad audiences are finding it. Paw Patrol, the dyno movie came in eighth place at 3.3 million. The end of Oak Street as it has throughout its entire run very close to Paw Patrol at 3.1 million. And the dog stars really the only movie in this top 10 that didn't either hold well or open well. It dropped 64 percent in a weekend where audiences were generally going to the movie theaters to bring in $2.7 million. It's pretty much done for at the box office. Over the four day weekend. So this is Friday through Monday, Spider-Man brand new day brought in 23.7 million. The Odyssey brought in 17.2 million. Coyote versus Acme brought in 16.1 million by any means brought in 9.2 million. Cars flips to fifth place over the four day weekend with just over $8 million. In cities is in
sixth place over the four day weekend. Right behind cars also at just over $8 million. Buddy stays in seventh at 7.4 million dollars. Paw Patrol is in eighth. The end of Oak Street is in ninth and the dog stars is in tenth. Dropping out of the top 10 this past weekend. Mutiny is out after two weeks and Tony also out after two weeks in wide release. And we also had kind of a rarity. There were two films that opened in wide release over Labor Day weekend that did not make the overall top 10 fall to dead point and onslaught were both wide release films that couldn't break into the 10 highest grossing films of the weekend. I don't know the last time that's happened, but it does not happen often. Looking at the biggest theater count changes over Labor Day weekend. Mutiny led the way losing 1,323 theaters almost exactly half of its total theater count. It was still in 1,380. Tony lost most of its theaters 1,134 of them. It was still in 773. Spa weekend lost over 1,000 theaters. It's still in 521. Idiots because these smaller release films don't have two-week
guarantees lost the vast majority of its theaters. It lost 910 theaters. It was just in 200. I hate that these smaller films don't get more time to find an audience. And the end of Oak Street brings up the rear losing 721 theaters. It was still in 2,202. Let's look at the first weekend in September in 2025 versus the first weekend in September in 2026. Now there is a difference Labor Day weekend actually felt a week earlier, but we dipped below on a week-by-week basis where we were last year for the first time in several weeks because on the same weekend last year the conjuring last rights had a big opening weekend. So this past weekend was about 26.6% below where we were last year. But as I said on last week's show, I expect us to give back some of the gains that we saw especially in August. But I think that is going to stabilize as we go through September into October and then into the holiday season. Briefly, I want to look at the race between Spider-Man Brand New Day and Star Wars The Force Awakens is more than it's going to happen. Star Wars The Force Awakens is going to be dethroned
as the number one domestic grossing film of all time. It has stayed even with Spider-Man Brand New Day after those legs that it saw through the Force Awakens holiday release. And when we take a look at that day-by-day comparison even closer, you can see that over the Labor Day weekend, Spider-Man Brand New Day actually increased its lead a bit over the Force Awakens. It's now just below the all-time domestic record. And by next week's show, we should have a new number one movie of all time, unadjusted for inflation here in the domestic market. This is something else we've been looking at. The top MCU grosses if you do adjust for inflation and Spider-Man Brand New Day has broken into what I call that elite chapter. Those top five films that it all grossed over $900 million. It's now number five on that list, pushing Avengers Infinity War down to number six. It's just behind Black Panther. I think it's got a pretty good shot at catching the Avengers. And then it would be behind just Avengers in-game and Spider-Man no way home. And so I know a lot of people have said, yeah, you know, unadjusted for inflation. It has all these records. But when you
look at inflation adjustment numbers, it's different. Well, yes, that is true. But even when you do adjust for inflation, Spider-Man Brand New Day has done so well that it is absolutely in elite company when it comes to the MCU. Also looking at the Odyssey, which was the number two movie over Labor Day weekend, it has tied hoppers and the Super Mario Galaxy movie for the most weeks in the domestic top 10 this year with eight. If it spends one more week, which it's going to, at least it'll tie Michael and Toy Story five and three more weekends in the top 10 will tie it with obsession, which currently has the record for most weekends this year in the top 10. And it could well go beyond that. And as we look at this upcoming box office weekend and previews for the newest movie start today, that brings us to our charts with Dan member poll question. It's a very simple question this week, practical magic to is the big release Warner Brothers needs to hit. And it's projected to open right around $40 million, which I think made this a very good question for this week. In Sidious chapter two is currently the 10th highest grossing September opener
domestically at $40.2 million. I want to know, do you think that practical magic to will beat that number and join the top 10 that is right on the edge of its projection. So it's basically, do you think it is going to open below projections or at or above projections vote right now on the community page and I will reveal the results on next week's show. Star Wars The Mandalorian and Grogu Now streaming on Disney Plus. Brave PG 13. Let's take a look now at the Labor Day Weekend box office in places where it wasn't Labor Day. And that's outside of the US and Canadian markets. These were the top five films internationally. And the Odyssey is again the number one film internationally at $32.9 million that comes in ahead of Spider-Man brand new day at $26.1 million which was the second biggest film internationally. In third is Mirzapur which is a Hindi language crime film. It's actually an adaptation of a three season 2018 series on Amazon Prime Video. And at number four is the movie we've seen a few times over the summer. It's Chikawa the movie The Secret of the Mermaid Island which brought in $12.4 million. This is still in the Japanese market. It's been doing incredibly well there. I guess there was some sort of a giveaway. A figurine giveaway this past weekend that boosted the box office gross considerably and put it back up in the top five. And then once upon a time
in the Middle East rounds out the international top five with $11.6 million. When you take the international numbers and you combine it with our domestic numbers we get our top 10 movies worldwide. And the Odyssey weeks after it last held the spot is once again the number one movie in the world after a 27% weekend over weekend drop bringing in another $46 million. So it has returned to the number one perch because it continues to do well here domestically because it continues to open in new markets around the world. I think it's opening in its last markets or just did. So it's once again the number one movie in the world. I think Oppenheimer also did that or it hit number one a long time after its release. Spider-Man brand new day was a close second at $44.2 million. It's now at $2.4 billion worldwide. Coyote versus Acemi also had a good second weekend worldwide. It brought in another $21.4 million for a $57 million global gross and it continues to roll out to a lot of international markets. In cities out of the further came in fourth place at 16.7 million.
Then we had Miersuppur in fifth place. Chikawa the movie the secret of the mermaid island was in sixth place. Once upon a time in the Middle East comes in seventh. Cars the 20th anniversary really waited very heavily domestically comes in eighth place. Paw Patrol the dyno movie comes in ninth place at 7.7 million and V rounds out the top 10 with another $7.5 million. And looking at the all-time worldwide grosses Spider-Man brand new day is number three globally all-time. It is now past Avatar the way of water and that's where it's going to stay because even if it did catch Avengers in game which it has a lot of work to do to get there Avengers in game is also about to add to its box office told with that re-released that's coming up later this month so Spider-Man brand new day looks like it is going to be locked in as the third highest grossing film of all-time worldwide and the highest grossing film of all time domestically. And returning to the domestic market let's take a look at the top per theater averages over the Friday through Sunday of Labor Day weekend at number one was Chrono visor which brought in $20,944 in one theater. It is a sci-fi
movie about a device that allows you to see any moment in time or history. And second place was the work in progress which brought in $6,900 in one theater. It's a look in America through the eyes of Robert Reich who is a professor and former cabinet member and Bill Clinton's administration. And third place was the Odyssey. It had the third best average of any movie over Labor Day weekend at $5,663 per theater. Again those premium tickets really help. Occupational hazard the first coral reefers brought in $5,220 per theater in one theater. It is a documentary about the first members of Jimmy Buffett's legendary backing band and Spider-Man brand new day had the fifth best per theater average with $5,164 per theater in each of its 3,520 theaters. These were the top films in limited release at number one was the 4K re-release of Akira which played in a lot of iMac's theaters as well. It was in 787 theaters and brought in $2.6 million. Miers de Pore playing in 370 theaters brought in over a million dollars in limited release. At number three
was Dear You which if you recall had a really impressive run in China earlier this year not as big of a launch here domestically which is what we often see. It played in 150 theaters and brought it over half a million dollars which is not a bad number. This is a pretty bad number. Tom and Jerry forbidden compass played in 850 theaters and only brought in $265,000. This was an animated co-production between Warner Brothers and a Chinese animation company. The goal was to capture the Chinese market. It came out in China earlier this summer. It didn't do very well. It came out here. It didn't do very well. So all around the failure there for Tom and Jerry and in fifth place was finding Emily which made $258,000 in 586 theaters. So that is a much more abbreviated look at the previous weekend's box office but let's get to what this video is actually about which is a recap of the summer of 2026. It is officially over and unless something really surges we also have our official top 10 of the summer. At number one of course and these are domestic numbers was Spider-Man brand new day
at $924.9 million. The Odyssey in second place as it nears $600 million and keeps growing. Toy Story 5 was the third highest grossing movie of the summer at $480 million. Obsession the movie that surprised everybody came in fourth place at $263.4 million. The Devil wears Prada 2 was the fifth highest grossing movie of the summer at $220.5 million. Then we had back rooms. The other big viral horror hit of the year at $197.5 million. Minions and monsters surprisingly at number 7 with 183.1 million and perhaps even more surprisingly Star Wars the Mandalorian and Grogu at number 8 at $177.7 million and perhaps most surprisingly Moana at number 9 with just $126.2 million domestic and rounding out the top 10 was Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day at $116.6 million. And let's take a final look at the predictions that I made in late April versus what actually happened. So I
predicted the Toy Story 5 was going to be the number one movie of the summer. I know that that looks silly right now but I don't think it was a terrible pick. It ended up being the third highest grossing film of the summer not because it did poorly but because Spider-Man brand new day and the Odyssey did exceptionally well. I picked Spider-Man brand new day to be the number two movie of the summer. It was actually the number one movie of the summer and many people said well it was obvious that it was going to be number one but at that time in late April to me it wasn't that obvious. I didn't think that it could do as well as Spider-Man no way home because that movie captured so much with all the different Spider-Man and it ended up doing a lot better. So you know you win some you lose some. Star Wars the Mandalorian and Grogu is now streaming on Disney Plus. What are you waiting for? Hop on. The must-see galactic adventure comes home on Disney Plus. This is the way our only chance is to work together. I like this game. Always wear your seatbelt. Star Wars the Mandalorian and Grogu now streaming on Disney Plus. Wait a PG 13.
And we're back. Streaming on peacock. May I present to you the award winning staff of the Toledo Truth Teller. Slat me it's Joss something loose. Ah yes! I like that. The certified fresh series returns. Your boss. You always like that. So what is this just in my own mouth? This is mad. Oyster is everybody. There's a certain satisfaction on your work with someone. Maybe we could be a family. You're a sadistic pig. The paper. New season streaming September 9 only on peacock. This show gives me a reason to live. Now here's where things really started going wrong. I picked Moana to be the third highest grossing movie of the summer and it was the ninth highest grossing movie of the summer. So that was a huge miss for me. I was very skeptical about the film but I guess I was not cynical enough regarding an audience's desire for the film. I thought that people would still go see it and they very much did not. Similarly, I weigh over estimated minions and monsters. I picked it at number four and it ended up being number seven on the summer box office list. Of course, the irony being it was the one minions movie that I actually enjoyed.
And I underestimated the Odyssey. I didn't know what its length with its R rating. Whether Christopher Nolan could deliver a movie as compelling as Oppenheimer and it ended up being even more so. I predicted it at number five. It was number two for the summer. Now the Devil Wars product two and the Mandalorian and Grogu. I think I was pretty all right on. I thought that the Devil Wars product two would do well and perhaps surprise some people. I picked it to be the sixth highest grossing film. It was number five. And I was not sure about the Mandalorian and Grogu and I did downgrade it unlike Moana. I said it would be the seventh highest grossing film of the summer. It was actually number eight. Then we come to my two misses. I picked Supergirl to be the number eight movie of the summer. It was a disaster on a scale that I didn't even consider possible. And I picked Scary Movie to be number nine. I don't hate that pick. It's just that there were some other movies that did better. The only movie I picked in the correct position was Disclosure Day. I picked Disclosure Day to be the 10th highest grossing movie of the summer. And it was the 10th highest grossing movie of the summer. So if I can put a feather in my cap, that would be the one. Of course, the two movies I didn't pick were back rooms,
which that's on me because I'm old and I did not honestly understand the appeal of that movie or that concept. And then obsession. I mean, show me the box office pundit that predicted obsession to be a top 10 summer movie at the beginning of the summer. And I will physically doff my cap to them because that movie came out of nowhere. It was like Sound of Freedom a few years ago. It was almost impossible to predict. Also, as I talked about at the beginning of the summer, I introduced a new scoring system that rewards me not only for picking the correct number of movies in the summer top 10, but for how accurately I picked those movies. Did I pick them in the correct position? Just as a brief refresher, this is how that system works. I get one point for picking a movie correctly in the top 10, no matter what position it's in. I get deducted one point for incorrectly picking a movie in the top 10. I get a half point bonus for a correct placement in the top 10. So if I picked a movie at number 10 like Disclosure Day and it ended up at number 10, then I get a half point bonus. I get a 0.1 point deduction for a movie that I picked correctly in the top 10,
but in the wrong spot. So if I picked a movie at number two and it was number five, then I would get deducted 0.3 points. And this is how things shook out the summer of 2026 was not one of my greatest moments. My overall accuracy score came down to a 4.8, which tied it with the summer of 2023, where I also got a 4.8. I really only did better than my performances in my first few years picking box office in 2015, 2016, and 2017. So you could say it was my worst score or tied for my worst score in the modern era. The summer of 2019 remains my high point as a summer box office predictor. I had an accuracy score of 8.5 that summer. And I had an accuracy score of 8.3 back in summer of 2022. So not my worst performance ever, but certainly far from my best. But hey, that's just the fun part of doing this show. You get things right, you get things wrong. Does it really matter? Last week I asked members here on the channel, not what the number one movie as far as box office performance was,
but what their favorite theatrical release of summer 2026 was. And this is what the member said at number one was the Odyssey, which got 45 votes close behind was Spider-Man brand new day with 41 votes. And then I was happy to see these movies where they are. The invite came in third place with 27 votes. It was not a blockbuster. It did well, but it wasn't a blockbuster. So I'm glad it got votes as far as the favorites of people who did see it in theaters. And Coyote versus Acme came in fourth in the poll with 23 votes. Obsession came in fifth place with 20 votes. Then we had the sheep detectives with 14 votes. And Hades Towne the musical, the pro shot of the Broadway musical, had a big fan base amongst the members. It got 10 votes. And these were all the films that were released in summer 2026 that got 10 votes or more. And of course, Spider-Man brand new day was the number one movie of the summer. And that brings us to our charts with Dan trivia question for this week. 1989's Batman was the first comic book film to top the summer box office.
Since then, 12 other movies based on a comic book have been the top domestic summer grocer. What I want to know is how many of those 12 other films, not counting Batman 89, can you name it? You might want to pause it to think about it because I'm not going to wait for you to, you know, sit and think for a couple minutes. So pause the video right now if you want some more time to think. Because here come the answers. The answers are Batman returns. Batman forever. Men in black, which some people might forget is a movie that was originally based on a comic book. Spider-Man, the Sam Raimi original. Spider-Man 3, The Dark Knight. The Avengers Iron Man 3. Guardians of the Galaxy Wonder Woman. Shang Chi in the Legend of the Ten Rings. Because it released on Labor Day weekend. It came in right under the wire on that summer. Honestly, if it wasn't Shang Chi, it would have been Black Widow. So it would have been another comic book movie that was back in the summer of 2021. And then Spider-Man brand new day becomes the latest comic book film to be the number one domestic grocer of the summer. So we all know that this summer was better than last summer.
It was one of the best summers ever. But how much better was summer 2026 than summer 2025? Well, let's look at it month by month. This is the May, June, July and August cumulative box office for each one of those months. And you can see that I think for the first time ever, all four months this year were over $1 billion in domestic grosses. The May box office was modestly ahead of 2025. We were at just over $1 billion, $1 billion, $63 million, versus $967 million in May 2025. June 2025 came in at $830 million. And June of this year came in at $1.067 billion. In July, we had similar months, somewhat. $1.116 billion was the domestic gross for all movies in July of last year. $1.117.8 billion was July of this year. But the real difference maker was August. It was a $680 million dollar August 2025 versus a $1.267 billion August 2026. Spider-Man obviously has a lot to do with that.
The Odyssey though and some other films also played a big role. And August is really what the differentiating factor was for summer 2026 because of Spider-Man falling where it did and because it did as well as it did. And this was not just a high grossing summer, according to the people who track these things, rent track and intelligence, the people that track box office sales. They claimed over the weekend before the numbers were final, that this was the highest grossing summer of all time. So is that actually the case? Well, I don't have access to rent tracks numbers. All I have access to are what I can get from box office mojo. According to box office mojo as of doing this show on Wednesday night, the summer box office in 2026 brought in $4.73 billion. Now, according to those same numbers, that puts it just short of the all-time record summer of $4.75 billion. Although again, there are grosses that come trickling in all the time. This may still be the highest grossing summer of all time. And even if it's not, it came incredibly close.
And you can see that we were over a billion dollars above where we were both in summer 2025 and summer 2024, about $700 million above where we were in 2023. And then way ahead of summer's 2021 and 2022, the number comes in ahead of every summer before that actually until you go back to 2013. But the kind of specter over any current box office number is inflation. What did these last summers since 2013 look like if you adjust the dollar for inflation? And I think even critics of inflation would say that it's a little bit more applicable when you're not going back to the 80s or 70s or wherever when you're just going back about 13 years. So this is what every summer since 2013 looks like in raw dollars. And this is what it looks like when you adjust for inflation. And you can see that if you do those inflation adjustments, we are still well below what the box office was bringing in pre pandemic. That record breaking summer of 2013 comes in at $7.163 billion. Summer 2024 was $6 billion. And really there was no summer that was below $5.2 billion.
We come about half a billion dollar shy of the lowest summer since 2013, which would have been summer 2017. So yes, if you adjust for inflation, we did not have a record breaking summer. And actually sales were quite a bit below where we were pre pandemic. But it doesn't change the fact that we still had the best summer since the pandemic. And hopefully we can keep that momentum going into the rest of 2026 and going into 2027. Recovery doesn't happen all at once. And even if we never reached the highs that we did pre pandemic, just getting in that neighborhood, I think is a win for the theatrical exhibition industry. Streaming on Disney Plus. Star Wars, the Mandalorian and Grogu now streaming on Disney Plus. Wait PG 13. And we're back. Streaming on peacock. May I present to you the award-winning staff of the Toledo Truth Teller. Slappney, it's Joss something loose. Ah yes! I like that. The certified fresh series returns. Your boss, you know he's like that? So where is this just an unknown this is, man? Oyster is everybody! There's a certain satisfaction when you work with someone. Maybe we could be a family. You said they stick pig. The paper. New season streaming September 9 only on peacock. This show gives me a reason to live. We look at the studio market share for the years so far at the end of every month. But this is the studio market share when you look only at summer releases. So these are ticket sales for movies released from May 1 through Labor Day. And it does somewhat mirror what we saw and have seen throughout 2026. Universal had the biggest market share of any studio with 27% of all theatrical grosses domestically.
Disney was close behind at 23.4% and Sony comes in third at 22.8% almost all of that is Spider-Man No Way Home. And yes, that does all get counted to Sony. Any distribution to Disney happens on the back end. So that is a Sony movie and that's what the tickets are sold for. So really almost three quarters of the sales for the entire summer were just those three studios. Universal Disney and Sony. The indie studios had the next best slice. The ones that aren't specifically listed on this chart with 7.2% of all ticket sales. Those would be your Neons, etc. A24 comes in fifth with 5.5% of all ticket sales ahead of Warner Brothers with 5.3% of all ticket sales and Paramount with just 5% of all ticket sales for summer 2026. Amazon MGM comes in at 3.1% and that little tiny sliver you see is Lionsgate. They didn't really have a whole lot to compete with this summer. They was kind of drafting off of Michael for a lot of the summer. It came in at about half a percentage point.
So we've looked at the overall box office. We've looked at how each studio did. Let's now crown the summer winners and losers. Which films did the best theatrically? And which movies didn't do as great theatrically? And I want to point out as I always do when I do profit breakdowns. These don't count ancillary markets. They don't count other forms of income. These are global ticket sales only. Which is down there at the bottom of each one of these graphics. But I would just ask, I know people clip these and put them on reddit. If you're going to do that, I don't mind. I like if you credited me. But please don't cut out the part that says that this does not count other types of revenue. Because that's a very important part of this graphic. So what movies were the winners in summer 2026? Well, some of them probably won't surprise you. And we will start, of course, with Spider-Man brand new day. This is the profit breakdown that I have, according to my formula and my estimates for the film. And it's global box office performance. You can see how I get to this total on the left part of your screen. The movie was not a cheap movie.
I put total costs at $375 million. That's $225 for the budget and another 150 for marketing. But it's global gross is at $2.4 billion. And I estimate that the movie has a net of over $1 billion. And when I say net, I mean, that's the money coming back to the studio after you give the theaters their cut versus cost of $375 million. I estimate that Spider-Man brand new day has generated about $700 million in profit. Cash money, take it home, put it in the bank, give it to Tom Holland, give part of it to Disney, whatever Sony does with the money. That's how much money they have to work with. And that makes it easily the most profitable movie of the summer at the box office. And keep in mind, this does not include physical media, streaming, merchandising, any of that stuff. That all goes on top of the cake. So Spider-Man brand new day, the undisputed king of summer, as far as theatrical profitability. But let's look at some other movies that did very well for themselves.
The Odyssey has also brought home an impressive theatrical profit, despite similar costs of an estimated $375 million. It's worldwide gross currently is at $1.6 billion. I estimate that $721.5 million net has come back to the studio versus what it costs to make the movie. I'm putting the theatrical profit for the Odyssey at $346.5 million. And if the stories are to be believed that Christopher Nolan gets 20% of that net gross, that means that he and Emma Thomas alone stand to make $144.3 million off the Odyssey. But even once you take that out of the theatrical profit, that's still about $200 million that goes back to the studio, even after you pay Christopher Nolan. So the gamble, if you want to call it a gamble that Universal took on Christopher Nolan has paid off. Obsession, of course, is also the profit story or one of them of the summer. Now you may wonder up at the top, where it says cost $15 million. Yes, it only costs $750,000 to make the movie.
But because this is a measure of theatrical profitability for the studio, I'm putting in what it costs the studio to acquire the film. So focus acquired the film for $15 million. That's how much they put out. The profit would be even more if you were just looking at the raw budget of the movie. But I'm going by the studio acquisition cost. So an acquisition cost of $15 million. Reportedly though, they had a very low marketing spend of only $15 million more. Really, it was word of mouth, social media, etc. That made this film ahead. Its global gross is now at $512.6 million. I estimate $230 million coming back to the studio from that global gross. Against costs of just $30 million, that's $200.2 million net profit coming back to the studio, which by the way, even though it was released through focus features, is also universal. So 200 mil from the Odyssey after they give no one his cut, another 200 mil from obsession, and everything that comes with it. And I'm sure that streaming and everything else are going to be very strong for obsession
once you get to those downstream revenues. Back rooms also turned a lot of profit again based off of a low cost and a low marketing spend. The budget for the film is reportedly $10 million. And again, because it was an existing brand name, I've seen reports that the studio spent H24 spent as a little as $5 million marketing the film because back rooms was already something that people knew for free, basically, from the YouTube videos, etc. So it's global gross is at $394.1 million. I estimate a net coming back of $184.8 versus costs of $15 million. That's $169.8 million going back to the studio. And H24 is not a studio that makes movies that generate this kind of profit very often. Even their big box office hits like Marty Supreme or movies with lower budgets than that, still don't generate that kind of returns. So a big windfall for H24. Toy Story 5 also brought back a decent amount of profit. It was also expensive, $375 million.
But it made $1.1 billion so far globally. I estimate $524.2 million of that coming back to the studio versus the production costs. That puts its theatrical profit at about $150 million. So that's good news for Disney. But here's another story that's good news for Disney because this is released under their Fox banner. The Devil Wars Proud 2. It came out at the beginning of the summer. It did really well, but nobody really talks about it as a big hit. But it very much was. A $100 million budget reportedly $80 million spent to market the film. It made $693 million globally. It did incredibly well internationally. I estimate $309.1 million net coming out of that global gross versus cost of $180 million. That puts its theatrical profit at $129.1 million. So even though it might not be one of the busiest films of the summer, it was one of the most successful and made a great profit for the studio again just from ticket sales before you put any other kind of streaming revenue or any other kind of revenue on the table.
I'm the life this kid. Always wear your seatbelt. Star Wars, the Mandalorian and Grogu, now streaming on Disney Floss. Waited PG 13. And we're back. Streaming on peacock. May I present to you the award winning staff of the Toledo Truth Teller. Slappney, it's Joss something loose. Ah yes! I like that. The certified fresh series returns. Your boss, you always like that. So what is this just a night? Oh no, this is mad. Oyster, is everybody. There's a certain satisfaction on your work with someone. Maybe we could be a family. You're a sadistic pig. The paper. New season streaming September 9th only on peacock. This show gives me a reason to laugh. Some other movies that turn a nice profit, I have scary movie bringing in about $51.6 million just theatrically. So I think that the studio is probably pretty happy with that. And you know, you can almost put this under disappointments, but minions and monsters so far, according to my estimates, has still brought in about $42.2 million to Universal.
It keeps the brand alive. It's just not a money printing machine, like the other minions movies have been. But when you look at the profit loss for the wide releases this summer, and I've looked at just about all of them, this was still one of the most profitable movies of the summer. So there are a lot of success stories this year, but there's always a flip side to that coin. And that is the biggest box office money, losers of the year. And we will start with the movie that I estimate lost the most money at the box office out of any movie in summer, 2026. And that is Supergirl. Supergirl cost reportedly about $295 million to make. A $175 million budget and $120 million in marketing costs. It only made $126.3 million globally. I estimate $63.1 million of that came back to the studio against $295 million in production and marketing costs. That gives it a theatrical deficit of $231.8 million. There were a couple of movies on its level, but that was the biggest deficit of any movie released in summer 2026.
Not far behind it though, was Masters of the Universe. And again, these charts measure theatrical profitability. I know that some people say that it doesn't matter how it did at the box office because it's done well on Amazon Prime Video. That may well be. That's not what I'm measuring here. I'm measuring how much did it cost to make and how much did it bring in theatrically. And Masters of the Universe lost a lot of money by that metric. It cost $185 million to make. Reportedly with marketing costs of $75 million that puts its total cost at $260 million. It only made $113.7 million globally, which I'm estimating $56.1 million of that came back to the studio versus cost of $260 million. I estimate that just based on ticket sales, Masters of the Universe lost a little over $200 million. Now, if you liked the movie and you think that it's performance on streaming negates this, that's totally fine. That's not what I'm measuring here. I'm measuring profitability. And by theatrical standards, Masters of the Universe was very unprofitable.
And right behind that, we have another movie that lost I project over $200 million in theatres. And that is Moana, another movie that cost a lot of money. $250 million budget, a $100 million marketing cost. And again, these marketing costs are estimated because they are rarely fully publicized. So I'm putting the cost for the film at $350 million. It made $319.8 million worldwide. I estimate $148 million of that came back to the studio versus cost of $350 million. That puts its loss also just above $200 million. Disney was gambling that audiences wanted a live action of Moana just 10 years after the original. They lost that bet. And they lost it big time. This actually wipes out its profits from Toy Story. And partially from the Devil Wars Prada as well. This is another movie I included. I almost didn't because it just came out. But there really doesn't seem to be much left in the tank for the dog stars. It cost $80 million with a reported $40 million in marketing.
And that's a total estimate. But about half the budget seems about right for the film. So I'm putting the cost at $120 million to release the film. But the gross so far worldwide is $33.7 million with a $16.1 million net coming back to the studio versus costs of $120 million right now. I've got the film losing about $100 million for the studio. Now it is still in release. So that might be mitigated just a bit. But this is not a movie that is going to be a money maker for Disney. And there's another film that wasn't a huge money loser. I actually think this movie might make money eventually. But the Mandalorian and Grogo. It cost $165 million to make. Another $100 million to market. So that's costs of $265 million. It brought in $345 million around the world. I'm estimating $166.1 million of that came back to the studio. Which puts its theatrical loss at about $98.8 million. And again, this is Star Wars and there's merchandising and there's Grogo dolls.
This is a movie that I think will eventually become profitable. But the question here is, is it an acceptable performance for a Star Wars film that it loses almost $100 million in the theatrical window and has to look to downstream revenues and ancillary revenues in order to become profitable? I don't think that that is the performance that anybody at Disney had in mind for the film. And that's why I'm including it in the losers because this seems like a movie that should have if you were performing up to the standards of the Star Wars brand, easily made it theatrical profit. And yet it fell well short. And to wrap out the summer, it wouldn't be the summer season if we weren't looking at some legs. Let's look at the best legs of summer 2026. If you don't know what I mean by legs, you take the final or current domestic growth of a film and see what the multiple of that growth is compared to its opening weekend in wide release. So for example, the winner by far for best legs of summer 2026 was obsession because its final domestic growth was 15.32 times its opening weekend. It is rare in this day and age to see a film in or out of the summer
that ends up with a growth that's 15 times its opening weekend. That is like, you know, old school, Titanic type stuff. Menians and monsters, even though its ultimate growth was not impressive, did have good legs at the box office. Its growth was 4.95 times its opening weekend. The Odyssey currently has a domestic growth that's 4.74 times its opening weekend. Then we have the sheep detectives, which was a modest box office hit. But it's also doing well on streaming. Its final domestic growth was 4.38 times its opening weekend. The invite ended up at 4.36 times its opening weekend in wide release. So that's ignoring what it made in limited release and just looking at the money it made in wide release and after. And Toy Story 5, despite having a big opening weekend ended up with 3 times its opening weekend at the box office. But we also had to look at the worst legs of summer 2026 and leading the way was ice cream man, the latest from Eli Roth, which only ended up making 1.33 times its opening weekend.
So basically another 33% on top of what it made in its first three days. That was the movie's gross. Most of these are kind of special event movies. We had the Billy Eilish concert film at 1.41 times its opening weekend. Sixth the musical live, which was a special event at 1.56 times its opening weekend. The Alan Richardson film Motor City, which wasn't in theaters for very long at 1.6 times its opening weekend. Gail Dottry in the celebrity sex pass, which lost most of its theaters in weekend number two, came in at 1.61 times its opening weekend. And Animal Farm, which was kind of an early summer disaster, made just 1.69 times its opening weekend. Really ice cream man and animal farmer, the two on this list that would be considered closest to a traditional theatrical release. But audiences weren't excited to show up in the first place and certainly were not excited to show up after the first weekend. So that's my look at the summer of 2026. Before we go, let's take a moment to look at the latest in the world of streaming
and we will start with two weeks worth of numbers for Netflix because the delay on the show this week means that there were two updates. So I'll try to get through these as quick as possible. The first numbers are for the week of August 24th through the 30th where the number one program on Netflix was the extended look at Grand Theft Auto 6. It brought in 31.11 million views. So a lot of people wanting to get a sneak peek at perhaps the most anticipated release of the year for any sort of media. The film The Whisper Man starring Adam Scott and Robert De Niro comes in second place debuting with 23.21 million views. Then we have facing El Chapo at number three. Death of the Pastors' Wife, which is another true crime series on Netflix. Those are the ones that seem to be breaking through. Comes in at number four with 18.96 million views. Beauty and Black season three, the latest season in Tyler Perry's show comes in fifth place at 12.95 million views. Then we have the Netflix film The Secret Woman at 11.4 million views. It is a Danish film about a rich woman who loses her memory
and tries to piece her former life together. Then we have some carryovers rounding out the top 10. Blood Sacrifice season one at number seven, with just over 9 million views. Outer Banks season five at number eight with 7.43 million views. The last house with 5.84 million views. And don't say good luck rounding out the top 10 at 4.42 million views. And these are the latest numbers from Netflix. These cover the week of August 31st through September 6th. At number one was the whisper man in its first full week of release with 33.42 million views. The Secret Woman comes in second place with an increase in views at 19.31 million views. Death of the Pastors' Wife comes in third place at 13.88 million views. Followed by Beauty and Black season three and facing El Chapo. And then we have five new entries to the top 10. The first is the Gentleman season two, which as a standard for most Netflix series, it seems like. Returning this year had much slower views than its previous season, which came out over two years ago. It brought in 6.7 million views. We'll see how it does in its first full week of release on next week's show.
Gandari comes in at number seven with 5.9 million views. It's a Hindi language Indian film about a mother looking to find her kidnapped daughter. At number eight is Alpha with 5.1 9 million views. It's another film from India about a super soldier that was released theatrically earlier this year. At number nine was Turning Point Generation 9-11 about the children at the time of 9-11 who were affected by the events that happened. Strange to think about this 25 years ago. It brought in 5.16 million views and rounding out the top 10 because why not is a movie called The Hard Core at just over 5 million views. It is a 2005 Direct to Video John Claude Van Dam film where he plays a former soldier hired as a bodyguard for a boxer. Why is it in the top 10? Ask Ted Sarandas. So that's what's happening on Netflix. Let's take a look now at the latest from Nielsen. Now these are delayed by about a month and their domestic numbers only. So this covers the week of August 3rd through the 9th, 2026.
And the number one most watched movie across all streaming services that week here in the US was the last house with 13.96 million hours watched. Behind was the Super Mario Galaxy movie at 9.4 million hours watched. Then Masters of the Universe as I mentioned it has done well on streaming at 7.45 million hours watched. The Devil wears Prada 2 comes in fourth place at 6.8 million hours watched. Then we have Spider-Man No Way Home. This was in the wake of Spider-Man Brand New Days, the atrical release at 5.8 million 5 nights at Freddy's 2 made its way to Netflix which put it back in the top 10 at 5.7 million hours watched. Spider-Man Homecoming comes in 7th place. Minions which pops on and off this chart all the time comes in 8th place at 5.43 million hours watched. In the land of Saints and Centres which is done well on Netflix this summer comes in at number 9 at 4.85 million hours watched. And the Netflix original film 72 hours rounds out the top 10. These were the most watched streaming shows for August 3rd through the 9th. At number 1 was the Big Bang Theory which has been a popular summer viewing destination show
for a lot of people for the last few weeks at 17.68 million hours watched. Then we have House of the Dragon. This was the week of its season 3 finale at 15.66 million hours watched. My life with the Walter Boyz returned on Netflix to 14.9 million hours watched. Ted Lasso's new season put it up at number 4 on the chart at 14.43 million hours watched. Bluey rounds out the top 5 followed by Grey's Anatomy. Lioness returned on Paramount Plus. At number 7 with just over 13 million hours watched followed by SpongeBob Squarepants. Best Medicine is at number 9 at 9.91 million hours watched and the bombing of Panam 103 rounds out the top 10 on Netflix at 9.36 million hours watched. And these were the best shows when you look at it by watch time per available episodes. So take the total number of hours watched divided by the number of episodes you can watch. That's how you get this number. The Idaho Mursleys leads the way at 2.51 million hours watched per each of its three episodes. Then we have the bombing of Panam 103 at 1.56 million hours per episode. Ride or die on Amazon has been doing really well on
on a per episode basis at just over a million hours watched per episode. Best Medicine comes in at number 4 Sterling Point comes in at number 5 Lioness comes in at number 6 at 725,000 hours per Miss Rachel's at number 7 House of the Dragons at number 8. My life with the Walter Boys is at number 9 and Ted Lasso rounds out the top 10 with 412,000 hours watched for each of its episodes. And those are all the numbers I have for you this week. I'm sorry I was a little bit late but as you hopefully could tell from looking at all this data, it took me a while to crunch all those numbers and get them in graphic form. Before we go, I wanted to take a look at some things you might be interested in both in theaters and at home for the rest of this week. First of all, now in theaters, I believe it officially opened yesterday is Hope which is the latest from director Nahong Jin. I've heard some really interesting things about this movie since the debut it can earlier this year and I'm hoping to check it out this week hoping to check it out. Then today Thursday on HBO Max, if you didn't see Supergirl in theaters, you can catch it on
that streaming service on HBO Max. And I neglected to mention this last week because it's never listed here in the US when I'm looking at at premieres but Taskmaster series 22 debut last week and it airs here in the states on YouTube on Thursday nights it airs on Channel 4 in the UK also on Thursday evenings. So you can catch up with Taskmaster series 22, they're just one episode in one of my favorite shows on television. And then this upcoming weekend there's several things you can catch in theaters. First of all there's Practical Magic 2 which is the big release from Warner Brothers featuring the return of Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock. It's been nearly 30 years I think since the first film. So we'll see how audiences take to this one. Also in theaters this weekend is the maybe Robin Hood movie the uprising. It seems like the studio is not sure whether they want to advertise it as Robin Hood movie or not but it is a Paul Greengrass movie starring Andrew Garfield. In most theaters around the country you can also catch Runner not to be confused with the Gal Gadot film The Runner which was released on Amazon Prime last week. Runner stars Alan
Richardson and Owen Wilson who team up to deliver a heart to a sick young girl while also under fire that sounds like a crazy movie. And also in many theaters around the country you can find the fix which is a heist movie set in Tehran starring Liam Neeson and Zachary Levi. And if you're looking for something that's a bit more nonfiction oasis don't look back in anger. A documentary about the band oasis and the Gallagher brothers reunite to go on tour will also be in many theaters around the country. And finally on Monday this year's Primetime Emmy Awards will be airing on NBC hosted by Mariska Hargitay. And because the Emmys are airing on Monday night that means my recap of the Emmys will be happening on Tuesday which is where this show usually airs. So next week's charts with Dan will be coming out on Monday morning using the dreaded estimates. So the show is a little bit late this week but it'll be a little bit early next week. And that's everything I've got for you this week. Thank you so much for listening to me talk about the summer box office. It's been a great summer to track along with all of you and I'll be back here next summer and also literally
every weekend between to talk about the box office. So thanks for watching all those videos but most of all thank you for watching this video until next time stay safe and I'll see you then bye
