Coach Speak S4 Episode 1: Roasting College Football Coaches in Press Conferences

I was a little worried. Maybe he wouldn't be returning But I have to ask the question will we see Dave maybe Reconven himself. I felt like we've seen that over the last couple seasons here in coach speak So are we gonna see that again this year? Well one of the reporters asks at the press conference Talk about it, but you've kind of tried to put yourself a little more out there the soft season social media Hanging out with us at lunch or whatever like Are you more comfortable with that now or is it still? You know a challenge No, I mean I've always I think I've always been this way. I think Losing and the criticism and the judgment that comes from losing sucks and so You kind of you kind of close up and all that and I think

2:04Yeah, I don't know. I don't want to do that anymore. And so I think that's very much a Conscious choice of whatever comes we ain't we're not gonna do that I miss that guy So much I think the three of us instantly felt a warmth in our hearts I think we did like I can't help but love that man. He's ridiculous. It's like the character I love the guy asked the question's like like you had lunch with us Yeah, like what's going on? You're trying to be a human being and not a cyborg You think like Dave drives over to the reporter's houses now like hey listen. I don't want anything I just thought I'd come by and say hello So you think he has a good sense of humor I maybe draw like a dry steady sense of humor like over time you learn to appreciate Okay, yeah, like maybe he's he's the guy that doesn't say much in the but when he said he'll say something in like a couple seconds later

4:07I just I wonder how sincere that that felt like do you feel like the room believed him when he said no guys This is who I've always been I've wanted to have lunch with you I've wanted but I closed up a little bit because of the criticism But this is who I Just who I want to be do you think they believe that No, I also liked that they used the word judgment not just criticism But like people are legitimately judging him as a human being based on the fact that his football team hasn't won games lately I just want to I And we can move on but I just I do want to see once they start losing games again, which is they're gonna do because They're valour but Does this does he stay with the real Dave or and there's you go back to the the other Dave or and it'll be something to follow I'll be honest with the ira. The r20 2014 and this team so not last year's team No Yeah, it's kind of yeah, I'm trying to figure out that question Trevor Um, yeah, no, I think it's different now you you've got a lot of different players and yeah, it's a totally different team Totally different team. I wouldn't compare those teams Trevor you are a beast. Yeah, man. That's awesome. Good on you Trevor. We don't want any comparisons to last year's nonsense I'm going back to 24. Do we got anything from 24?

6:11I wonder why he did that. I wonder why skip 25 and went straight back to 24 I'm sure there's some circumstances that feel similar probably can textually maybe there's the you know the line of scrimmages New brand new like it was in 24 or something But yeah, look that relationship is just I think it's the best in college sports I legitimately do I think Trevor and Bill O'Brien is the best reporter coach relationship in the country Really quick boys in 2024. I'm just a quick Glance here. There's a lot of losing. I mean, there's a lot of ass beatings guys Well, that was Tommy Tommy got benched. Well, he has a lot of Scott Benchtern. That's you yeah usually usually when you ask about Does this season feel like that season? It's usually you're hard getting back to like a good season Does this seem like that 1984 group right that's what he should ask you do you feel like he got a high-spin guy back there calling the shots I will say they got a little 66 to 10 action over four of them that year they they really at one last time they beat somebody 66 to 10 goodness

7:17But other than that whole lot of lopsided we you know we cover Florida state obviously people know that if they watch this and Leonard Hamilton we covered him later in his career He would talk about he would use references to like seasons where well you know Six years ago or eight years ago. We lost two games to whoever early in the season It's like yeah, but that's not the recipe for getting good like you'd be like yeah We remember that year we lost a Princeton at home or whatever. It's like yeah that happened but that doesn't mean That that was a weird that that team was so bad in December and then turned it around So so anyway the comparisons usually though and well I don't think 2024 ended all that great for Boston College. Yeah, that's a good day I like the idea though Trevor. I like the idea and and and I think in a weird way Bill did too. He was kind of like okay, not now with you. All right Trevor Well, and also bill also has like a hierarchy of how much of the reporter. He hates the most and I think he likes

10:29Can he can you get fined by a different conferences officials can like if he gets a letter with a fine for For ripping the AC if it could he just tear it up Yeah, how how would that work? He can't get fined right? I wouldn't know But I would say this I don't know that there's a governing body that rules college football in any way anymore So you could kind of just do whatever We hear in a conference, but you know if you're in a con if he ripped his conference officials that would be one thing But in this situation he could have gone all in Also quit being a baby Florida states had to deal with ACC officials For 34 years whatever it's been 34 years 35 years Other schools for 50 and 60 you dealt with it for one game sunny One game now I'm not wanting to get back to the states. Yeah now imagine sunny what that's like week over week over week Nine times a year and through different regimes week all harken back to our days with Doug Rhodes back in the day Maybe rest in peace

11:31For years under the other guy and that was a disaster and then they have a new person and it's still the same cry I'm a Doug trying to explain away the guy moving the ball against wait for it's just like up and moving the ball Like what yeah come on sunny nobody's feeling sorry for you Nobody's feeling sorry for you I guess the implication though is it was an ACC crew Why did they have an ACC crew doing it a team from the ACC Feels like they would have gotten a neutral crew like they do for bowl games But yeah, sunny you're the one that flew over Ireland What's it? Hell feel your pain man keep a rolling bin what we got hey speaking of governing bodies and doing whatever you want in today's college football world Here's Lane Kiffin talking about adding NFL players to his team sure Yeah coach, I guess just the you talked about it a little bit But just some of the decisions that you guys have made over the last week to potentially bring in some of these players from NFL Roasters just if you could expand on that a little bit more and then just your conversations with the conference too in terms of Making sure everything's well. They've got great conversations

12:35Yeah, that's a great question About these decisions. I probably even the minority of how I make decisions Yeah, probably not what most coaches do I feel like my decisions should always be made in the best interest of the players that sit in this team room and not But for my reputation and how the decisions play in the national media or other fan bases I've never been that way and that could be wrong. It's probably part of my story why it is the way it is But those players and the people that hire me always know he's constantly trying to do the best thing for them so Yeah, I struggled with it a lot There's a lot of factors into it and different things and one that I struggled to was okay this late Even though that's what you're doing in the NFL and there's an argument these players are paid like that And it's what happened yesterday in the NFL a new players come in and take people spots and added to roasters Another guy's been there working so

13:36I met with our leadership committee of our players And I asked them what it's your team What do you want to do? If these players are Allowed to be added to roasters What do you want to do and every one of them was in paddock about Thing help us win bring him and You know we understand that you know, we have a team that's practiced together work together all off season, but When I'm said, hey, this is how it works at the next level and this how the real world works You know, there aren't days can't bring employees into um certain jobs to help the help the company so That made me feel a little better in the struggle and being Committed for yeah, he didn't want it So we'll wait to hear for more guidance, you know the SEC issued guidance in our question about that they'll follow court court orders and so We'll wait to this week to see if there's any more guidance and the question whether

14:38Myself as the as the head coach of football and will football follow SEC orders. I said it earlier this morning when asked um Of course we will If if if my players say we should Because it's really all up to them look man. I'm sold. I don't know what y'all think of this whole situation But that 90 second clip I kind of resonates with me more than I thought it would it. I'm I'm a hundred percent on board lane Kip is just doing right by those players one thing I've always liked about Lane's ability to lie straight faced Is that he will add to it if there's usually some sort of it's not just a lie. There's an embellishment He wants you to believe that not only did he actually speak to some leadership committee there on the team which is hilarious Uh, that was during a water break that was during a water break between period eight and nine like Jim Joey get over here for a second but in addition to You know asking the leadership group whether or not they were cool with this he wants you to know that they him fatically and fatically Every one of them. Yeah. Yeah. Everybody there. I mean it wasn't a question at all

15:42And they and they even said yeah, it kind of stinks that you know Tom over here has been working Yeah, and he's not gonna be getting to play anymore because you brought in a tight end from the NFL like we feel bad about that But you know what coach? That's how it's gonna be for us in the next level So it happens all over the world in the real world. Ira. Yep. What are we here to learn how to do right build a future for ourself in the real world And now Lane's hands are tied. I will say this about Lane's lies usually I feel like he believes his lies Like usually I think he convinces himself There was no conviction in that like he doesn't even he didn't believe that he wasn't selling it real hard He was not selling it really well because he didn't have to he wants you to know that the players made this Decision so it's yeah, I'm at it anyone be mad at the LSU players. I'm like if it I mean There's dirty bastards just welcoming back pros. Yeah, I mean, they're just they're amoral. Yeah, like Lane Kiffin cares about the integrity of the sport And always has we know that it's the LSU players that are running a muck. They're ruined in the sport

16:46These players are out of control probably and what we got the transfer from all miss boy Hey, how about a little week's hero week one random coach beef Joey McGuire he's had a headline free off season right guys down there a Texas Tech sure Well, he decided he was going to make some more headlines when he said this randomly about USC and Lincoln Riley nice That's the ACU game was exactly two years ago today. Yeah, have you just given thought to to a sellout crowd you guys coming out to the Galaxy Stadium on Saturday and how important and special that is yeah, it's gonna be really fun and you know I still never forget you mean you can't take these moments for granted. Yeah, I remember last year we're getting ready to play Arkansas Pimbluff and and Skyler go Howard literally says coach this is gonna be the first time in my career And the guy had played for four years. This was his fifth year He said this is gonna be the first time in my career that I'm gonna play in front of a home sellout um, you know, and and so that just says a lot about

17:51How lucky we are to be where we're at, you know Not to take any shots You know USC and Lincoln Riley, but man, it's really awesome to be playing in Lubbock, Texas No, we're gonna be playing in front of 60,000 and it's gonna be warm It's gonna be ever bit as warm as it was Saturday the great thing is we got some really tough people at West Texas That love their football and they're gonna show up and No matter what they're gonna be any excuse of why they're not gonna be here for us Oh, I love it. That's got like we got the classic setup for that one boys. We all love that. It's It's a can't take shots. Yeah, it's a can't to no offense, but here comes an offensive all do respect Yeah, but here's something horribly disrespectful coming your way not to take shots And three here comes a shot one. Yeah, and oh, it's glorious I do the content there is that USC played their opener in week zero on Saturday against someone San Jose State maybe

18:55And it looked like legitimately 12,000 14,000 people were there like it was mostly empty I don't know if that was the camera shot we saw, but it looked incredibly empty And so that's what he's talking about when it comes to USC Yeah, and it fairness I suppose it had been Unusually hot in LA like a hundred degrees hot Well, they're all soft. They're not there not a couple that with how soft that fan base is Yeah, what are you gonna get Ira? Yeah, if you're coming for these people the hard-nosed Tough weather Texas West Texas guys and women they they're not they're not can be deterred by a little heat wave I do like that he doesn't see the difference between fans having options and say LA or Lubbic Lubbic that's that's a point that's a point That's just good. He's no, it's not that there's nothing else for them to do here in Lubbic that they show up Unlike LA. It's just because they're tougher. I think everybody will be Associated with the huddle will break out and go and that'll be the guy What an answer yeah, and I think that's That's part of that's part of the mix of kind of where we've Directed this thing and I think the players are super comfortable with that and confident and We'll see how we go Yeah, I also not gonna let him know what play we're gonna run Yeah, you know, so I think there's a lot of that that goes on in college sports You know, we don't have a guy that's been here for four years that they know is absolutely gonna run out and be the guy So yeah, I don't think There's anything wrong with that

Yeah, yeah, well Well, what bothers you though isn't the fact that he won't release the quarterback's name It's just like why do you have to be kind of a jerk about your answer like we're gonna Yeah, so what's gonna happen is we're gonna run a huddle We're gonna have a huddle run out onto the field and when they break the huddle one player is gonna line up behind the center You know back Yeah, you'll be the quarterback guys. I feel like it maybe it's because I'm old now But if I if I was in that press conference and he was that smug to me I think I would legitimately be like what do you what do you afraid of do you think the other side when they see Joey run out there by the way I'm going with Joey is the just of the phantom name now not Jared because we we've all we we understand the Jerry name But do you think when they see Joey? They're gonna call a timeout that they're gonna be frazzled like what is the difference? What do you think is gonna change in their defensive game plan at all?

They're gonna be in a huddle right on the sideline Yeah, what do we got been oh, you got two more left guys these two coaches faced off against each other than week zero probably one of the best games of the weekend UNLV and Memphis will start with new Memphis coach Charles Huff I think this is our fourth season are doing coach speak and coach huffs third school But he was asked about the type of Personalities that he recruits He is this kind of guys you recruit. I mean, you know I've seen it Marshall seeing some amazing out here and I was born a way today with the toughness that you talk about I shouldn't make I seen it. How do you identify and keep recruiting these guys especially moving into this era? Is that him breathing?

28:17Oh, no, I'm one. I think I'm blessed Because I think the good lord sends people into your past and life for a time and a purpose and a reason Two you got to love football to play for me Three if you play for me you will become tough In life and academics and football because you don't have a choice and that's not a You know, I were you know trying to convince them. That's because in order for you to be successful in life You got to be tough and you got to be able to find their young men who believe in that understand that we don't play music at practice So if you want music you're not gonna play for me So we get the kids who are worried about football and creating value for themselves. We don't do ice cream trucks We don't do fun things. Oh, man. It was we was fun that locker room right now. It's fun You know, it's fun when these guys graduate and they get to walk across the state. That's fun So no, we're not the and and what I'm not saying I'm not saying that other programs that do that are not right That's great. Yeah, you are

29:18We have an opportunity for the next six months for some of these kids to change their life forever So it is our job as coaches, adults, administrators, supporters to do everything we can We spent a week and a half with Dr. Sherry Mai teaching these guys how to sleep Why because this trip was important so she taught us how to sleep She taught us to value a sleep. She taught us what to do Monday, Tuesday Wednesday Thursday coming up Our guys on the plane with i-mass guys are on the plane with 30 minute timers on last night. We're staying up 30 minutes later Because we're trying to do everything we can at the University of Memphis to help these guys be successful in life And if that means we had to bring in a sleep doctor to help them sleep a little better because we were playing It's It's one o'clock back home, right? So if we had to do something to that minute of a detail to help these guys, it's what we have to do And I think once they get here and they fill that love. I think they really embrace it Well, I don't know about you guys, but buddy I think we could have used some of that before the trip out to stay

30:20If only if only the previous or two times previous Memphis coach knew about the sleep doctor Yeah, I was gonna say there might be an opening at Florida state here. Did they tap back into that Memphis? Well I think we were all very impressed with that Yeah, I think about it. I never think he said I it's funny man like and I know he wasn't taking shots guys Not at all, not at all It's programs that do have ice cream trucks and play music and practice Who are those programs? I've never seen an ice cream truck that I've seen one at the program we cover opinion So but the question is Does any of that really matter like I was this serious question I know mostly we just make fun of these coaches, but seriously Is there any correlation to having music in practice and not having music practice? Not that I'm aware of, but I bet there is with sleep Well, sleep's an important thing for sure, but yeah I think it's just a tone though I think it's only mentality tone It sets a tone for like he says he wants people that are serious about football

31:20I Yeah, I think most fans would hear that I can guarantee you Memphis fans were like hell Yeah, when they when they listen to their coach talk like that now does it matter? I'm gonna guess even Sabin probably played some music at practice at some point Kirby smart might too He also has awesome players, but when you're recruiting from where Memphis is recruiting from maybe it does tell you Something about those guys if you're like look. I'm a tough ass. I'm the toughest coach you're ever gonna play for And there's no fun. There's no fun and dance it in music at practice and they're ain't you if you if you're coming here to eat ice cream Buddy taking on down the road But he didn't smooth the after practice is nice. I don't know Smooth this one soft, but an ice cream truck Ice cream truck with the bells and everything imagine like you're in period 22 a 24 And then all the sudden you hear that ice cream truck You hear this cream truck in the parking lot and the player start running

32:21Yeah, well you can't hear it over the music that's playing they turned down the music. I want that Well that gumball the push up. Yeah push up that would be awesome like back in the day when you ran out of your house in the neighborhood Yeah, if that's what it looked like at a Memphis practice when that ice cream truck rolled up They literally just ran in the middle of the play and towards the parking lot coach.
