America’s gross national debt has crossed $40 trillion for the first time. Treasury data put total public debt outstanding at roughly $40.047 trillion, including about $32.266 trillion held by the public and $7.782 trillion in intragovernmental holdings. The milestone arrived amid renewed concern over deficits, interest costs and Washington’s bipartisan appetite for borrowing.

Parents at Middle Creek Elementary in Wake County, North Carolina, are asking for an alternative to a music class taught by a transgender teacher. Father Aaron Driver argued families should not have to pay into the public-school system and then pay again for private school or homeschooling when requesting an opt-out. The school-board fight also featured a commenter suggesting homeschooling, relocation or even expulsion of children whose parents she called “bigots.”
