This is an I Heart Podcast. Guaranteed Human. Welcome to Mediter Trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins. There is a prize. Mediter will donate $500 to the Conservation Organization of the Winners Choosing. I'm your host, Spencer Newarth, and today we're joined by Brody Randall, Seth, Laura, Corey, Nate, and Logan. This is a 10-round quiz show with questions from Mediter's Four Verticals, which are hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking. Mediter Trivia is brought to you by one of my favorite beers, Bush Light. Bush Light Head for the Mountains. Alright, we are starting today's episode of the Mailbag question. If you have a question, you want the crew to answer, then send your question with the subject line Mailbag to triviaathemediter.com. This is probably the toughest one we've gotten so far. It's not tough. Okay. Let me tell you about it.
I think it is. This is from Josh in Illinois. My mother, who was in poor health, recently moved into my wife and I's place that is really only big enough for the two of us. Hunting season here in Illinois is right around the corner. I have been picking it back up here in my mid-twenties after around a decade of not having the ability to do it much. My mother is staunchly against hunting. You can't stand the idea of killing, quote, innocent animals for anything other than pure, last resort survival purposes. In fact, years ago, I came home with a squirrel I had killed and she didn't talk to me for a week. All that to say, while I am prepared to debate the topic and obviously I am right, she's not in good health and I'd rather not rock the boat at such a sensitive time. How would you approach either talking to her about the topic or sneaking out before the sun several days a week this fall? Senator do a vegan nursing home. My house, my rules. Okay. I'd encourage you to ask your wife how she feels because if it's two on one, tough odds,
but if you two are together, then I think it's fun. He says mid-twenties. He says mid-twenties. This is his mom to be clear. But did he grow up with her when they hunted like that is dad hunt? He says he's been out of the game for a decade. So I don't know, I assume this isn't like a household thing. Yeah, I would ask her if she eats meat and then bring up the ethical question. I wouldn't get into debates with my mother who's in ill health. I agree. I would either make it invisible to her or I would take a season off. It's your mother. Yeah. Wow. I think the right answer here is to lie. Brody, it's your mother. The right answer is to lie. My mom ate, game made. She didn't have a problem with it. Yeah, just tell her you're really low on money in that. This actually is a survival situation. Oh, okay. Yeah. It makes you write, you had check as well. It's a win-win. Yeah. I'd just watch every single crime movie you can find where someone hides evidence of violence.
You know, like I'd buy a lot of drop claws for the garage. Yeah. Bleach. Yeah, exactly. I'd just become very clinical in my cleanup. Yeah. I know. If she sleeps late, maybe you got for an early hunt. If she goes to bed early, maybe you hunt the evenings. They could be like a fun little game. What can I hide for mom? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's like you're almost one of my favorite games of my life. Yeah. It's really bad at it, but nonetheless. I think you just got a lot of mom. She doesn't know where you're going. You kill a deer. Maybe there's a buddy's house. You can hang it in his garage to take care of it. I understand they're like, you don't want to make your mom sad in the last months of her life assuming that's what's going on here. You don't want to get into arguments around the dinner table with your mother in ill health while eating a deer. Let's keep the things in perspective. That one. That one. Everybody she's eating dinner somewhere. Everybody remembers the quiet thrill of flushing a few cigarette butts down the toilet when they're 15, you know? Josh must be the golden child if mom is living with him.
So I think he can kind of guilt free. Sorry about that. That's a tough one. That's a heavy question. Everyone to begin with. All right. Some housekeeping. In a previous episode, I had a question about the homophone that is organic material in soil and a middle eastern dip. The correct answer was hummus, which is spelled with 1m or 2. But as about a dozen listeners pointed out and Randall, I was wrong in calling it a homophone. Apparently the 2m dip is pronounced hummus and the 1m soil is pronounced hummus similar to how you pronounce human. My bad. But the whole room got a ride. So in fact, the outcome of the game, Janice was still the big winner. Randall, you would have caught on to that if you had been in the room for that episode. I take it. I think so. Yeah. Hummus. Hummus. Damn it. Sounded like an idiot. Also an announcement. Coming to the Minnesota meat eater store on October 22nd for meat eater trivia. The event will run from 6 to 8 p.m.
The grand prize is a $1,000 gift card to the Minnesota meat eater store teams of up to four can compete. But solo players are also welcome spots are limited and you need to sign up when we did this the Milwaukee store. We were sold out in less than 48 hours. So act fast. It costs $10 per person. At the end of the game, all of that money will be donated to a conservation organization of the winners choosing. If you want to play, go to the meat eater dot com slash events to register that is October 22nd at the Minneapolis meat eater store. When are we going to do a team trivia? We're going to win $1,000 gift cards. Yeah. This was the first thing I thought of. It's a good idea, Brody. We've only done teams when it's like ganging up on Randall or ganging up on Brody. We all love those games. We do love those. All right. The Shelby index for today is a five. So I'm putting us on perfect score alert. And with that, we're on to the game of trivia. Play the drop, Phil. Look, I need to know what I stand to win everything.
How's that? Just tend to win everything. Come on, suckers. Question one, the topic is hunting. And as always, this will be multiple choice. When did California ban mountain lion hunting? Was it 1980? 1990? 2000? Or 2010? When did California ban mountain lion hunting? 1980? 1990? 2000? Or 2010? Randall without choice is how close do you think you would have gotten? You were picking up your board pretty fast. I thought you just knew this one. No, no, I didn't. OK. I could have gotten, I'm still not sure of my answer. Just an educated guess. When did California ban mountain lion hunting? 1980? 1990?
2000? 2010? Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Laura says 2010, Logan 2010, Seth 2000, Randall 2010, Cory 2010, Nate 1990, Brody 1990. The correct answer is 1990. Let's go, baby. Just Nate and Brody got that one right. California went from having a bounty on mountain lions to closing mountain lion seasons in just nine years. Here's that timeline. Until 1963, the state paid hunters to kill coogers. From 1963 to 1970, the state allowed year-round mountain lion hunting with no beg limits. Then California made mountain lion seasons for 1970 and 1971. In 1972, they put a moratorium on lion hunting. Then in 1990, by a vote of 52% to 48%, California voters passed Proposition 117 to outlaw mountain
hunting. Question two, the topic is woodsmanship. The Bureau of Land Management defines this nine-letter type of camping as quote, camping on public lands away from developed recreational facilities. BLM defines this nine-letter type of camping as camping on public lands away from developed recreational facilities. You know what you do for teams? What could we do? You could do it by like pursuit. Like Laura's like a bird hunter. You know, Logan's a bow hunter. Sess the fisherman. So you want to put the anglers together? I don't know. I put an angler with a big game hunter. Oh, that's good. You got to mix them up. I think you go, you specialize and see who knows more about other stuff. I think like Sess got more diversity than just fishing. What do you call, what do you think yourself as? Trapper. Set this morning was checking his fantasy fishing standings when I walked into the office.
Okay. 7.57. He has a team of eight professional anglers. Fantasy sports. Well, except he forgot to submit his picks. Five. He's forgot to submit his picks when he went up to Alaska to go fishing. So he lost that week's fantasy fishing and it really hurt him in the overall standing. So I would, yeah, I think it the shoe fits fishing interrupt to this fishing. Get around question to because I have too much to do. The BLM defines this nine letter type of camping as camping on public lands away from developed recreational facilities. Is Brody Henderson stumped? Dude, I have a word that I know is right and it's not nine. Okay. It's not nine letters. I'm sure this is the only type of camp. The answer you're looking for is in my head somewhere, but I don't have it. It's everybody ready. And I'm gonna fight this one. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Laura and Logan.
Seth and Randall say dispersed. Corey says primitive. Nate dischursed Brody, boom docking. The correct answer is dispersed. Look it up. See if boom docking. That's not nine letters. It's not nine letters. I know. Dispersed camping is anytime you camp somewhere that's not a campground. This term is used by the BLM forest service, National Park Service and many state agencies according to a 2026 survey dispersed camping is now the most popular camping style in America ahead of traditional campgrounds for the first time ever. Which makes dispersed camping not quite as dispersed. Not quite as cool. Not as fun anymore. Everybody's doing it. Question three, the topic is conservation. This conservation group which sells lifetime memberships for dogs is headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota. The room is stumped. This conservation group which sells lifetime memberships for dogs is headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Nate and Logan locked in their answers and Brody. Did someone restrain this table? It's like the same table but it's just. No. No way. Yeah. Yes. The spaniel. The walls are a couple months ago. Uh-huh. That's it. Nathaniel and his wife stained it and Nate said it was a thirsty table. How many coats you put on here? Three. Three of three of three of poly. So six total. Was your wife wearing a mask? No, she was coaching me. She didn't actually come. Oh, yeah, yeah. She stood in the other room and watched through the window No, every now and then I'd be like concerned about your future air. Right. That's no I've been doing all her standing projects recently. Yeah, when you said Nathaniel's like who is that? I'll never know. Is that actually your full name? Yeah, that's this sophisticated man. We don't know too pretentious We don't use that This conservation group which sells lifetime Memberships for dogs is headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota Everybody ready Go ahead and reveal your answers. Laura says
Bezant forever Logan duck's unlimited Seth, Fezant forever Randall rough grouse society Corey, Fezant forever Nate ducks unlimited Brody, Fezant's unlimited the correct answer is Fezant forever Or quail forever The Fezant forever The Fezant forever dog life membership is $500 and it comes with a Yeti dog bowl and framed certificate That is half the price that it costs for a human life membership Which comes with a Yeti go box framed certificate and calendar Fezant forever says that more membership equals more habitat more birds and more public access So bang for the buck a human lifetime membership, you know humans live a lot. I was gonna say yeah dog lifetime membership for dog When depending on what the annual is you might be better off with there is no annual membership It's a lifetime or nothing so you got to get it when you're a puppy
Should be one set of friends Doesn't need one, but it's good. I think Max gets him Max also buys duck stamps for his that's what it is. That's what I was thinking of Question four the topic is cooking This is our listener question of the week which was won by Mike batson for sending this great question Mike is going to get a $150 first light gift card if you want a chance to win the listener question of the week then send your question to trivia at the meat eater.com This nine letter word refers to a Cajun cooking technique where fish is dipped in melted butter coated in bold spices and seared in a hot pan to build a dark crust This is like one of my dads two dishes that he cooks so he doesn't do much cooking so is he good at it?
