EXPLOSIVE: Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and Sonny Cumbie Make HISTORY With 11 Touchdowns—Will Anyone STOP Them?

About this episode

Locked On Sun Belt - Daily Podcast On Sun Belt Conference Football & Basketball is made possible by:

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs put college football on notice with an explosive 80-point opener, scoring touchdowns on their first 11 possessions.

Can LA Tech sustain this offensive onslaught as competition stiffens?

Dave Schultz breaks down the Sun Belt’s 10-4 weekend, spotlighting LA Tech's record-setting night, App State’s precision against Maine, and Coastal Carolina’s fiery second-half comeback behind Deuce Bailey’s 273-yard, three-touchdown performance.

Key discussion points include James Madison Dukes’ defensive showing against Liberty, South Alabama Jaguars’ dominant run game, and Georgia Southern Eagles’ smothering rush defense.

Schultz questions whether those early blowouts foreshadow true Sun Belt contenders or simply mask vulnerabilities against lesser opposition.

With upcoming matchups versus national powerhouses Clemson and LSU, will the Sun Belt’s early stars keep shining?

Don’t miss this energetic breakdown of pivotal victories, betting angles, and what week two holds for Sun Belt football.

This is the Lockdown Podcast Network celebrating 10 years of your team every day. Welcome to the Sunbelt Law Tech. Lockdown Sunbelt. You are a Lockdown Sunbelt. Your daily podcast on the Sunbelt Conference. Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. Your team every day. All right, Dave Shulf, Lockdown Sunbelt. Your teams every day. Today's episode brought to you by Square. Right now you can get up to $200 off Square Hardware and Square.com slash go slash NBA. Run your business smarter with Square. Get started today. All right, we're going to do about half a league today and half a league tomorrow. Just like we did it during previewing it. It can only do so much in about a 30 minute broadcast. I am off on Monday. We're off today. So we're going to start it off. It is bourbon festering. So why not break out some Jim B. Black one of my favorite products. You can find this anywhere.

Seven years old 90 proof. I'm a Homer. That's fine. It's the best bottle of bourbon on any shelf for less than 30 bucks. All right, here's to you. Here's to the Sunbelt. It was a good weekend. We'll get into the teams here in a second. God, that's really good for less than 30 bucks. Okay. Overall, the Sunbelt went 10 and 4. Nobody in the Sunbelt was upset. They didn't pull off any upsets. Everybody who was supposed to win one. Everybody who was supposed to lose lost. Some did it closer than up. Close to Carolina had a spectacular second half, right? Fliped it on a diet, right? The statistics in the second half were actually more impressive than they were in the first half for West Virginia. Marshall, not so much. Marshall was bad from the beginning. They were bad in the middle and they were bad at the end.

ULM got hammered. In Arkansas state put up a good fight. Kind of like I said, kind of a let down trap game and it took Memphis a half to get going. And by that time they did. They're off and running. But it looks like they have some good offensive players, although they did lose a defensive player. Keep defensive. So let's start it off with LaTek. 80 points. I mean, it's got to be some sort of record. Not only 80 points. It's got to be a record. Obviously. But they scored 10 touchdowns on their first 10 possessions. I'm not sure we could score 10 touchdowns in technical bowl in 10 possessions. But they scored 10 touchdowns in 10 possessions. And they had 77 points with. Where's that left? Of course, my understanding that there would be no math. There was a punt return as well. So they scored touchdowns on the first 11 times they touched the football.

They had 77 points. I know this because it's got to pay attention. And they had 21 and a half minutes left to go. They could have if they wanted to put up 100 points. Now, I don't usually do this. And I got called out of bunch because of my Penn State. Marshall prediction, which I did pick Penn State to win. Tells how many people actually watch it. But I did say it was going to be close. And I was wrong. And that's fine. And I get to be called out for that. I did it. But you usually don't see people calling themselves out. And that's what Matthew Allen did. All right. At Schultzacast. You know how I said sunny doesn't run up the score. I take that back. That was done at half time. When I believe it was a 60 burger. Let me see. What is it at halftime?

Yeah, it was 63 to three. All right. And the line was about 40 semi points or something along those lines. Look at the look at his face. Yeah. I cost Schultz so much. All I all I responded was oops. I did pretty well. Again, I went. I went for and two and a half right. I lost Marshall lost Auburn. And I lost. Marshall to win. So that's like two and a half because that was a much smaller. So I did pretty well. I'm telling you right now. I'm going to lose the Notre Dame. All right. One of the teams I despise is Notre Dame. Whenever I pick Notre Dame. Never come when I don't know today. They always come. All right. So there's I should have told you that we'll see what happens. All right. I may get that told you so, but I took the Irish to cover against Wisconsin. Did not bet the Louisville Ole Miss ballgame because I don't know what's really going to happen to them.

All right. Anyways, different podcast different. So so La Tech looked pretty good. If not really. Right. Even the backup quarterbacks were like seven out of eight with three touchdowns. Amazing. Now that was Northwestern state competition is going to step up. I don't know if anybody did more in the first weekend to put themselves in the national championship race than LSU. The thing is we're pretty sure LSU is good. We're just not sure how good because we're not sure how bad Clemsons. Now we may find that out. And there's nothing against Georgia Southern, but we'll see if Georgia Southern goes into Clemson and Beast pumps. I may lose more money betting on the Sunbelt in that game that I get with Marshall. Not going to lower my less. So the competition is going to step up just a little bit. All right. Also looking pretty good was app state. They beat main 55 to three. Yes, it's main. Yes, I get it. All right.

But app state, you know, 647 yards 250 yards. Pretty good. Malachi single 10. I mean playing catch 22 to 24 291 yards three touchdowns. I mean, how awesome is that even the app state backup quarterbacks, which includes a hassle back was a seven out of nine for 57. All right. So that's pretty good as well. I've stayed had nine guys rushing other football. They had 12 receivers, not quite as good as Georgia state, but they had 12 receivers, making 29 overall catches and relatively spread out. Samuel pick at the third five catches 76 yards to touchdowns. May branch also had five catches. There in Fugin. We're going to go with that for now for catches 47 yards for a touchdown. But again, 12 different receivers caught the football for app state. And it's main. It is what it is.

They had a couple of sacks and eight tackles for loss. So we can only take it for a grain of salt. And again, not to go off on another tangent, but the games I saw for next week. We're going to have to lower the amount for back because I only play so much. I'm going to I'm going to tell you right now I'm going to lose not necessarily lose, but I'm going to play way too many games because there seems to be a lot of easy money and much more about mismanches. I'm going to lose. Then I am with a little miss. Like if you want me to bet LSU or mess, I won't do it because I'm going to think of that. Turnover game, meaning a turnover is going to determine that ball game probably. And I don't know who's going to get the turnover. So I like mismanches. All right. I'm going to start a little over reaction. We can do that as well. All right. None of the less app state is looking pretty good. Now they get ECU. This coming week.

They're already a nine and a half point underdog. I like that ball game. Then they're getting Charlotte. Charlotte just locks lost to Citadel and overtime. A few overtime, as a 20 point paper. What's the chances app state can be re-in-o heading into rally in a moment. Just say it. Maybe. All right. People are wanting to see this would be one of those. Don't over react. I even had app state people tell me. ECU played Alabama. We played made. So all different levels of football there. Can't over react too much ECU and app state circle each other on the schedule. Because that's how much that rather remains to each other. So we'll see how that goes. Remember to start it out into the nine and a half points. Bread. We'll see what direction it goes. All right. It was two halves for coastal. Caroline. We'll talk about that next. Right after I tell you about square. I'm sorry.

Right after I tell you about. Supply house and punch. This episode is sponsored by supply house. You would show up on game day without a plan and you would show up to a job without the right parts. The palette has improved there was no way before I started working here which makes sense that I'd be drinking 90 proof bourbon straight and it not be all that hot that just tastes good. It's not not great 12 year cash ring but that's not what it's supposed to be all right to have for Costa Carolina and maybe just maybe right to look like it. They have their quarterback at least for this season we don't want to start talking about that all already but Costa Carolina comes up short 31 24 but they fought through what was a 24 to nothing half time deficit and they ended up outgating West Virginia overall. That's a little craig. All right first half 114 yards for coastal Carolina 336 for West Virginia all right second half 311 yards for coastal 77 yards for West Virginia and the difference in the game is.

Coastal score 24 in the second half West Virginia scored 24 in the first half the West Virginia put up seven in the second and of course a lot of that is coming from. The quarterback doos Bailey 21 on a 37 373 yards three touchdowns not thrown an interception and he also ran well it's listed it's 10 times for 19 yards but he had a long run of 20. He's not running a whole lot a little bit under pressure there is what that would appear to be right I don't have let me check I'm going to pause this for a second be right back. All right we do have it all right so in the first half doos Bailey 9 on a 16 for 80 yards second half 12 on a 21 with three interceptions 293 yards the impressive part about that is is that he had to pass the question of genius not playing the run coastal Carolina had 18 yards on 17 carries they're going to figure that out.

But they were really when they did try 17 times it seems like a lot but they weren't being able to run the football so that means West Virginia actually playing the pass could actually stop the run. Now West Virginia in the second half again they didn't pass at all that all that much totally there were seven to nine in the first half with a touchdown 113 yards second half very efficient four out of five but only excuse me only 19 yards again they only had 77 yards. So we'll see if doos Bailey can you know carry that over into the into the second half obviously now there's film on him and so we'll see what happens in the second half they do get boredom he's going to get another road test against Delaware they're pretty good and then a liberty who we're not sure how good they are all right and we're going to talk about that that's called the same way so good star. So good star a good job by coastal Carolina overcome a 24 nothing deficit make it a ballgame cover all right I did not have.

But make it a good showing in organs all right still not sure what we got with Billy Napier and J. M. you are defensively they were pretty good all right obviously holding liberty to 13 points is impressive. All right but they got outgained by liberty 321 to 2 91 they did hold liberties rushing attack to less than 100 yards 91 and liberty did throw it for 230 yards does it says here no one had any turnovers but liberty held the ball for like 37 minutes J. M. you 22 and a hand right so I guess 37 and a half to 22 and a half. So again I'm seeing different things because again one of those games I just didn't see that liberty kept on stubbing their toe but you know was 17 to 6 and half and liberty got it to win 7 20 to 13 think they had a shot at the end but couldn't come up with a big point thing I'm concerned about about James Madison is JC Evans 7 out of 9 61 yards.

That's very efficient but he's throwing it sideways. Camden Coleman 5 out of 9 57 yards all right 12 out of 18 118 yards that's going to win a game in the rain against liberty is not going to do it against OD you all right it's just it's not and what we saw on Saturday may not do it against Georgia state or state or asking so James Madison defense looks good but offensively a little shaky they did rush it pretty well I will say that 31 times for 173 yards Evans ran for almost 70 yards Cromwell 51 yards and Petaway 47 yards. So you know they average 5 and a half yards I carry so that's pretty good so again the it is just one week but heading into week 2 I'm a little bit concerned about J. So I think there that's a thing we have to be concerned about because they are going to get some tough ball games going out to San Diego state that's going to lead right into OD you no break in the schedule it's going to be a thing all right.

When we come back we did have some Sunbelt teams have some good outcomes against some lesser squad will do that after I tell you this time about the Ringo and square Ringo is known for its an amul supporting gum but now they're launching a nicotine free pouch Lorraine copouches are designed to provide clean focus while supporting a namal at the same time each pouch contains 50 milligrams of caffeine plus L. really dominated the ball game 474 yards to 205 so the defense was really good lunch would feel not bad 15 on a 21 189 yards two interceptions not great he did rush for 84 yards and on eight carries and scored a touchdown and um Dorelle Smith also had about 84 yards had exactly 84 yards on 10 carries and he had uh two touchdowns Darryl Smith all right fresh right so the cajons look pretty good against Lamar they were over 20 point favorite and they also uh covered all right um let's see they did sack Lamar three times and had bought had seven losses for seven tackles for losses although I will say Lamar had five tackles for losses as well so and you can't get any more balance than the cajons all right patch yards 231 yards rush yards 243 yards all right does more is going to want to clean up the penalty six for 48 is a lot and of course the three

two are going to be a lot of balance which according to my guys a ratio review we're not pretty at all all right south Alabama with a relatively easy win over a southeastern they took a 22 to seven a lead into half and win at 39 to 14 major and the offense puts up almost 400 yards the defense holding southeastern to 231 yards only 45 on the ground now they were behind a lot so they're going to pass it but still only 45 on the ground that's impressive all right bishop Davenport unup bad 18 on a 27 but only 154 yards and a touchdown he also ranted in for touchdown 11 carries 23 yards south Alabama had to lead the second half so they're going to run in a bunch 59 times for 241 yards Martin had 18 carries 69 yards fill up said 66 yards done bar had a 60 yards talk about sharing the load Jenkins did have a five catches in a touchdown for 78 yards for a south Alabama so again that's nice when it is a

big and southeastern they're getting a two way this week we'll see if we have a little may have a bunch of cross over episodes this week although with two lane of wouldn't be across over episode is something different but that's will haul and will all got his head coaching at least the sumbell experience at South Alabama was coach for Southern miss all right it did not go well for roll hall and will haul into lane did not look good against you they lost 17 to 3 so could South Alabama get off to a good start and could they possibly be also could they be three and who do they have let's see here well we know who they have you think this would have been in here under my search they get a high at home so if they beat too late could they be three and oh heading into Kentucky and then now it's not so much a trap game anymore it's still a trap game for Kentucky but they'll have Kentucky's attention even if they are less

or opponent that there are three and oh and be too late on the road right no doubt about that but South Alabama looked pretty good how about Georgia's other 31 to nothing and a lot of that was in the first half they put up 21 points in the first quarter three more in the second quarter take a 24 to nothing lead in a half time and they defeat Charleston Southern 31 to nothing they did cover that ball game and I mean this is I mean they could have this could have been 70 points they had 424 yards to total yards for 35 Georgia Southern how the Charleston Southern and it's a lesser competition I get it to know yards rushing right go look how many yards rushing Clemson had against LSU I know Georgia Southern's not LSU I get it but obviously they got a pretty good rush defense or Charleston Southern shouldn't be playing football Charleston Southern had a total of five first downs the only thing I'm concerned about is what did happen in you know the second half to you know George Southern did they all was it I maybe hope maybe there was rain here hold on a second

turns out the good stat website didn't have the fourth quarter still I'd be a little bit a little bit concerned I know it was 31 nothing and you don't necessarily need to run it out but you need to be able to do something and even the backup for one of way they got a touchdown in the first possession but then the rest of it was puns so that would be the only thing I'm concerned about if I was Georgia Southern but nonetheless can't be all that upset about a 31 nothing well game and now they are 22 and a half point underdogs I believe against Clemson Clemson is going to be pumped up playing at home I think it's like a plus 1100 I'm probably going to be foolish enough I'll take the points and I'll take those that plus 1100 I'm going to put it on Georgia Southern we'll see if we get one of those all right and then how about the Golden Eagles from Southern this where we be in do I told you I wasn't really sure we heard a lot from Blake Anderson wasn't sure if he was doing the under promising over delivering thing they certainly over delivered yesterday or on

Santa Fe rather 49 to 3 over Alcorn State yes I know it's Alcorn State I get it 543 yards to 223 all right Ethan Hampton not even all that efficient 13 out of 2380 yards touchdown and an interception but he did have Robinson a rush for 20 123 yards on three carries and three touchdowns wilder had two touchdowns on 14 carries and 90 yards so those two guys 37 carries and 212 yards that's pretty good they rushed the ball 57 times 317 yards a six touchdowns on the ground and five and a half yards for care so again the Cajuns Jags Eagles Golden Eagles we're all pretty good on Saturday none of them were expected to win all or not expected to be close ball games all of them did cover good teams win great teams cover all right we will do what we got here the

Troy's will do more on Marshall O.D.U. Georgia State U.L.M. and Arkansas State for Tuesday's episode and hopefully we have some crossovers again we got a lot tock and on the shoe we got Clemson we got the Cajuns in USC we got South Alabama and Tulane plenty of opportunities across over and special guests so we may have bonus episodes now I'm off today and I'm off Friday Friday's too late well the way we could have a bonus episode just publish it that day I don't have problem that but we'll see how it goes all right again thank you so much for tuning in we had a bunch of people subscribe we're 19 short of 3200 so we are right on the cusp of 3200 subscribers appreciate all the Penn State bands that came at me I mean I don't have any to like to stand on Marshal was bad I was wrong for the part of being closed I did pick Penn State to win so there's I didn't bet on them to win which would have saved me some money if I did

nonetheless it was a good first weekend of college football looking forward to week number two we'll find out much more about these teams are they good are the other teams really bad are the opponents really bad that they're supposed to play or were they just playing really good teams all right you can say Clemson playing LSU and ECU playing element we'll find out more this weekend all right please subscribe to lock down sunbelt don't forget about those audio podcasts as well apple and Spotify looking forward to a great second week of college football third with the week zero and of course we're gonna have a lot of fun down here Louisville and in Bardstown being a bird test all right if you are around come visit me at the distillery people already recognizing me and checking it so I do appreciate it and we we're gonna have a lot of fun this week all right thank you for tuning in you've been watching lock down sunbelt your teams every day have a great Monday everybody we'll talk to you again on Tuesday
