Should Penn State be on Offset Watch in the first game of Matt Campbell's tenure against Marshall?

Dave Schultz of Lockdown Sunbelt is here in this crossover episode is we're going to break down everything with this Penn State versus Marshall matchup. We're going to give you our predictions later on. So can Penn State cover this 24 and a half point spread? It's moving around. So is it going to stay at 24 points? But we'll make our predictions. How both teams are going to game plan, right? Marshall, questionable on defense. It made some adjustments, but that's where Penn State can really attack. But I want to kick things off big picture. Dave, because you are the Marshall Sunbelt expert here. Penn State is coming in with a completely new team, right?

2:03The defense has a lot of unknown. The offense remains consistent. There's continuity there, but how's it all going to look at the big 10 level? Well, this isn't a big 10 team. And Matt Campbell doesn't routinely put away weaker non-conference opponents. Like Marshall's chances to kind of make things a little uneasy at Beaver Stadium in the first game of Matt Campbell's career. I absolutely do. And I'd say Marshall expert-ish. Okay. They are, they're a little bit loaded, especially on offense. All right, take for what you will for preseason, you know, teams. But Marshall has five guys on the Sunbelt all first, all for Sunbelt team. Two offensive linemen, a wide receiver, and a tight end. And the quarterback, Carlos Del Rio Wilson, was voted preseason player of the year. So they're a little bit loaded offensively. Tony Gibson is going into a second year of being a head coach.

3:05Long time assistant coach was at NC State most recently and had to revamp a whole Marshall team that Charles Huff who got that big win in Memphis last week took former Penn State former Penn State running backs coach. That's right. Yes, if you ever get a chance to have Charles Huff on ask him who's the best running back he ever coached. That's a pretty good question considering all the running backs that he had at Penn State and in Alabama. But so Charles Huff won the Sunbelt conference a couple years ago at Marshall took half the team with him to Southern Miss and turned Southern Miss around into a bold team. So Tony Gibson had to fill in a lot of spots in his first year and admittedly did not go with Carlos Del Rio Wilson who was just not a good practice quarterback. But when the lights came on he was really good. And being in spring ball and now you know having fall camp big things are expected out of Marshall this season. And if I'm Penn State I'd be a little bit nervous just because let's be honest.

4:06The Campbell's going to be a little bit nervous making his coaching debut out as the Nittany Lions head coach and you know this better than me Zach. He wasn't the first choice. He wasn't the first choice. Don't need was the second choice. I'm not even third. Sure he was the third choice to be the Penn State head coach. Now he got it so that works out well for him. He did a good job at Iowa State. But he's going to be a little unnerved too because just this days in college football there's a ton of pressure. James Franklin won 10 ball games a couple of years ago and is now a Virginia Tech. Yeah. No, and you bring up you bring up that point right. That's the common that oh James Franklin won but he still didn't even win enough even with the double digit games because at the end of the day Penn State eventually wasn't moved by winning by 30 40 points against the likes of a Marshall or or a Buffalo and do time. It was about you never won the games against Ohio State and Michigan. So but you bring up that point that yeah, college football is moving very quickly because

5:08you see Kurt Signetti set a really unfair precedent in a way by by winning at Indiana of all places and with Matt Campbell coming in because I want to I don't want to just be the Penn State home or for the the entirety of the conversation. Most of it but when I do when I do look at how Matt Campbell performed at Iowa State because those teams were still definitively better. I do think there's kind of an element of him playing the long game in this one because now does that put you on upset watch? I guess potentially it could because on paper Penn State is definitively better more talented than this this Marshall team. However, there are a lot of moving parts and do you want to experiment a little bit to start to build out your depth chart right? Do you want to see different guys in different spots that it can they handle it right? It's not the it's not the one and no mentality anymore. I think that's kind of the biggest difference is that James Franklin was always so hyper focused even if the team was significantly better.

6:10How can we pummel them? I do think there's some added there's some outside factors that Matt Campbell wants to say, okay, what do we have at this position group? Can we challenge this group and they're kind of using Marshall as maybe a little bit of a measuring stick? Uh, now is that and is that an issue? Is that a problem at the end of the day? Because some people might say, well, you got to win the game. Who cares about all that other stuff? We saw what that turned into with James Franklin and Penn State that it wasn't good enough. Well, I would do that when I'm up 30 or 40, but I'm certainly not doing it in the first half against anybody. And I wouldn't do it on a second or third possession. I got to see what my starters couldn't do, right? They know all the plays that the other side of the ball is having. We need to go against guys that we don't know exactly what's coming. So that's an interesting situation. I hear what you're saying. But I don't think this is your normal, you know, group of five, group of six. Yeah, let's test the waters. Yeah, because it is an experienced ball club.

7:1120 Gibson's been around a long time. Again, only a second year as a head coach. As for Matt Campbell at Iowa State, he always did pretty well because the bar at Iowa State was always set so low. He did play a couple of big 12 championships, lost him both. But anything, anytime you got to eat wins, you know, was good. I will say just to give you a sum belt comparison and we'll go back a little bit. I think it was the COVID year that Billy Napier and Levi Lewis went into Ames, right? Is that where Iowa State is? And the Rage Encaygians took down some guy named Brock Birdie and Iowa State and Matt Campbell. So he's faced Sunbelt teams before. So he knows not to overlook them. Should Penn State win this? Like you said, on paper, they got the four and five star guys, you know, Marshall's lucky if they have any four star guys, but they are talented and they are experienced. And if I was Penn State, I wouldn't be taking the sundering herd lightly.

8:14No, and with what you mentioned about the veterans and the star power respective to the Sunbelt, I wouldn't be either. And Marshall doesn't look, I don't want to say that, Hey, Marshall's got nothing going for them or anything like that, but they have every reason to play spoiler. And I'm not here to say that Penn State, because there are people that, you know, anybody can say anything online, but that Marshall should go in and Penn State should be scared that they're right. It's the talent. And I think that what Penn State has in terms of continuity, right? If all these moving parts on offense and defense everywhere and it was something that they had to put together, right? The reason Kurt Sagnetti in Indiana were able to succeed right away is because there was so much continuity and consistency coming over from James Madison to Indiana. That same idea applies here. That same standard applies with Matt Campbell. There are so much coming over from Iowa State. Well, that's, they're just the Penn State cyclones. It's actually a good thing in this transition that you keep the core. You keep the nucleus.

9:14It's not a bunch of Iowa State holdovers. It's some of the better players that Matt Campbell's had from that previous team. So and then you combine that with the Penn State players that stuck around. That's why I'm confident Penn State wins. I think Penn State wins comfortably. And it's also a really good coaching staff. The guys that he was able to bring in like Dan Lynn from USC and things like that. It's not just, hey, we're going to take Iowa State and drop it in the big 10 and see how they do. I don't think that if you're, if you're thinking that you're completely wrong about this Penn State team. Yeah, I agree with that. And I also, I don't think Marshall is going to be afraid. You know, a few years ago, you know, it was one weekend, same Saturday, you know, Marshall, I'm going to forget my team's here. Marshall, I think went in and beat Notre Dame, right? App State, beat NM and Georgia Southern beat Nebraska all on the same day. Yeah. So Marshall won't be scared. So that would be the one thing I got, they got going from.

10:14They're not going to be afraid of playing Penn State. Doesn't mean they're going to win, but they're not going to be afraid of Penn State. Well you mentioned Carlos Del Rio Wilson. He is the one that makes this offensive go and offense go and he's surrounded by a strong supporting cast for a Marshall team that's looking to make a run in the Sun Belt. And what the defense that has so many moving parts of Penn State could potentially give them fits. We'll talk about that next year on this lockdown crossing. We talk about what Marshall's game plan is along with the Penn State nanny lions. So we're going to start to get into the game planning aspect of it. What does Marshall want to do when they have the football? What does Penn State want to do to try to prevent some points for some turnovers and then flip that? Hey, Penn State. I was state of the Iowa State nucleus on offense carries over. So what does that look like now over at Penn State? And how is Marshall going to defend it with a defense that was really suspect a season ago? So let's lay it all out and then make our predictions in the upcoming segment. Dave, how would you describe this offense? Because when I look at it, it's the Del Rio Wilson show that and it's from a football perspective, me appreciating college football. It is good to see that he has a supporting cast that he can rely on because he does it all to begin with.

14:24And then you just give him more leverage. You have made me a bigger believer already after one segment in Marshall as they go through conference plan anything. And this team sounds exciting, especially from the offensive side of the football. Well, if you want to start another, maybe we can do locked on tight end or just throw it to the tight end because I would love to have that podcast. I love throwing it to the tight end because it opens up the entire offense, right? Because the tight end is usually faster than the linebackers and bigger than the safety. All right. So it opens up the running game and then it opens up the deep passes as well. Toby Payne is all sunbelt tight end, but then you have a wide receiver as well in Adrian Norton, whose first team all sunbelt. And you got Carlos Del Rio Wilson, Syracuse guy. I have to be from Syracuse didn't go there, but big orange fan. We'll see if Ferran Brown can do it. That's a different episode of a different podcast, but we'll see how your number three goes for Ferran Brown. But he was up there in Syracuse a few years ago. And even when they lost last year, like to the Cajuns, Del Rio Wilson still had a really

15:28good ball game in a double overtime loss because as you mentioned, the defense struggled last year. We'll see if Brad Lambert can change that for this season. But if Del Rio Wilson can rely on his teammates and he doesn't have to carry the load, then it makes it much more difficult to defend because we have to stop the quarterback. We got to stop the running back. We got to stop the wide receivers and we got to stop the tight end. It's not easy to do all of that. You can take one thing away, but now I got multiple options and they like to be balanced. They want to be a balanced team, but at the same time, they will open things up as well. Yeah, don't look at Del Rio Wilson for anybody. Oh, he's a mobile quarterback. So he probably can't throw where he's got to use his legs to open up the passing game. No, that makes this offense more lethal. So he can drop back and pass if he needs to. But I think one of the things that at least doing my martial prep, I think, I think I noticed that, hey, the running backs are not as strong as they could be. And Del Rio Wilson is going to have to rely on his legs a little more to help open up

16:31the passing game, but help, but to also help offset what's at the running back spot. Is that fair to say? Well, we'll see because again, they have two offensive linemen that are all preseason sundault first team. And so, you know, which is better, the offensive line or the running back. Because if my offensive line can block, it may not matter who is behind me running the football, you know, I, you know, to go pro wise, we're going to, I think, I think Kenneth Walker is going to find out how good the offensive line was in Seattle compared to that offensive line in Kansas City as a Patriots fan. He wasn't getting touched until five, six yards down the field. That's not going to be the case this year. So, so if the offensive line can produce and not only protect Carlos Del Rio Wilson, but get some push and obviously that's not going to be easy against, you know, the Penn State's front seven, you know, it could make it much more effective offensively for the hurt. Now, from Penn State's perspective, defensively, the key is accounting for the quarterback. Okay.

17:32If he's going to be, so you're going to be running a lot of read option style defense, meaning that there's got to be a lot of you got to, your defensive end has to be disciplined. Okay. If he's a threat to keep the football anytime, if they're going to have read option plays, RPO type plays, the likes of Max Granville or Ivan Kameshue. Unfortunately for Penn State, those defensive ends are veterans. They and they understand and despite Penn State having troubles with mobile quarterbacks last year, it's a different defensive coordinator. It's a different coach. I think Dan Lynn will be very much prepared. But I think the, the outsider looking at this game might say, Oh, Penn State struggled enormously with a mobile quarterback on defense that it's probably going to happen again. I would say no because Dan Lynn comes in and stalls a new defensive system. I think where the issues will, will be had where the breakdowns will be in kind of some chemistry, communication because it is the first game after all. And that's where all the moving parts are.

18:32So when you have a martial law offense, kind of similar to Penn State where it's just, you have a solid core in place, you have a solid nucleus. So kind of where I'm leaning in this game is a lot of points because Marshall is going to want to speed Penn State up. They're going to want to put points on the board. Shut the crowd. Take the crowd out of it. And Penn State has the capability of being able to, okay, hey, if you want to speed us up, we'll play that game. We can put points on the board. So the defense is that work in progress. Whereas the, as we flip it over, Penn State's offense, okay, well, Marshall's defense has a lot of question marks. They're making some changes. They were not, they were not great to put it politely last year. I mean, the numbers are off the charts. This is a team that you could feed off of week in week out for opposing offenses. They're over 30 points a game, over 400 yards a game. You could run against them. You could pass against them every weakness. You could exploit. You could do it. With the Iowa State nucleus on offense coming over quarterback running back multiple starting

19:34wide receivers, multiple tight ends. One of them is going to be available. The other ones working his way back, but still that is a core. That is a nucleus. And then the offensive coordinator, then the quarterbacks coach, the offensive line coach, all the, the apparatus that made Iowa states offense a year ago is now at Penn State. So I don't see any of those. Hey, they're going to be slow to start where they're going to have communication and chemistry issues. I don't think so in the slightest. And that's what leads me to believe. We're going to see a bunch of points in week one. See, we all hear what we want to hear. Zach, I heard you say, take the over. That's what I heard. You can translate that. Yeah, that's it. That's a fair translation. Or somebody already has taken the over. What did that? So how would you, how would you look at Marshall's defense? What are they trying to do? What are they trying to fix? Are they starting what's stopping the run? Are they more concerned? Because I, I'm not familiar entirely with the sun belts. So maybe there's just more passing, right? What is the other? Yes, they're well, I mean, they don't call the fun belt for nothing's act.

20:35And this is true. Out of points, right? And just because you score points with a couple of minutes to go, doesn't mean the other team won't score. They're pretty good on the back end. All right, they want Smith is all sun belt safety. And they got their corner back, one of those five and five year guys, PuGi Trotter, who's coming back on the corner. So if they can get any pressure upfront whatsoever, they're going to be in good shape. And that's not something they're on accustomed to just a couple of years ago. Michael Green was the sun belt player of the year defensive end. I think he led the nation in sex just two years ago when they won the sun belt championship. So if they can get any pressure upfront, they're going to be pretty in pretty good shape. All right, this season, all right. I presume what Penn State wants to do and, you know, doesn't matter if it's Matt Campbell or, you know, Joe Paterno or Bill O'Brien, right? You know, run it down your throat, you know, whether it's, you know, court Warner or whoever, I'm just giving my age. I don't do you even know who court Warner is?

21:35I do. Yeah, I'm really going to upset me. All right. By the way, my mother graduated from Penn State. We don't hold that against her too much. Is the creamery still a thing? Oh, yeah, absolutely. All right. Good. All right. So I Penn State usually doesn't matter who the coaches, they're running offenses from, you know, 1955. So that's probably what they're going to do a little bit is try to see if they can manhandle Marshall upfront because the offense of line of Penn State is going to be bigger and more athletic than the defensive line for Marshall. But if they want to, you know, air it out a little bit, they better be careful because those guys on the back end are pretty good. To answer that directly, this Penn State offense, at least the way that what they're bringing over with Taylor Mauser, the offense of coordinator and what we've heard over the course of the off season training camp. This is going to be an offense that multiplicity is the word that's been used a lot where we can run the football at you. We can go 12, 13 personnel run multiple tight ends. We can go five wide if we really need to.

22:37So and there's a lot of the last two decades as Penn State gone five wide. Oh, yeah, that's what I thought. Let's see, can I even can I even get to one or two? Right. So am I expecting that to be their bread and butter? Absolutely. I hope they do it. I'm telling you, I just I hope they do it just to come into the, you know, 21st century. It's it's all the hybrid stuff because what is Dan Lind doing the same thing on the equivalent on defense where it's got we're going to have a four two five. We're going to run a four three depending on and that's the way the big 10 is because the big 10 is just not a classic. Hey, most of these teams run ground and pound you got USC. You got Washington, all these teams that come over from the former pack 12 and and you just have you'll have your Wisconsin's you'll have teams that want to Hey, we're going to try to pumble you and play ground and pound football north western. But then the next week you got four wide receivers getting ready to run deep on a USC team.

23:38So it's the it's the hybrid offense and defense that Penn State's going to try to do. So yeah, there will be some ground and pound. But if that's where that you do have to start running the football. So I agree that Penn State's going to look to control the pace of the game, whereas Marshall wants to turn this into a shootout and then hopefully you can force Penn State into making mistakes where they're uncomfortable. So at least as to our predictions, what we talked about what can happen? What might happen? What will actually happen? We're going to get to that next year on this lockdown crossover. 26:40And as it stands right now, this could change, but at the time of this recording, Penn State is a 24 and a half point favorite minus 4,000 on the money line for the Nettany lines plus 1400. If you're thinking upset for Marshall 52 and a half on the points total, I think you and I can agree, Dave, that there are going to be points to be have Penn State's offense again, carrying over. There's a lot of talent on offense, a lot of certainty, right? There's more certainty with Penn State and Marshall's offense versus what they have defensively. Okay. And then again, this is the Sun Belt, fun belt defense after all versus a big 10 team. So Penn State should be able to move the ball effectively, but because of what Marshall has, they can also move the ball effectively. I just, I wonder when, when does the talent, does the depth, does, I mean, Matt Campbell was brought in because he's an ex as a nose coach. Does that eventually take over at some point in time? Because like I said, if Marshall can kind of keep themselves in the game and take the crowd out of it and say, you know, man, and just kind of start to

27:42put in the air, was it really worth moving on from James Franklin in the previous regime for this? Was it really, was it really, can you create that kind of environment, that uneasiness in week one? Well, you can. Right. They're going to be anxious and football fans are, you know, demanding like that. I think it's going to be a football game. All right. You give me plus 1400. I may just, you know, put a little bit on our saying to a lap, right? That's not the worst odds in the world. But I think it's going to be a football game. You want me to get specific? We can get a specific as we need to as far as scoring. I think I think Marshall is going to have a fourth quarter lead. I think Penn State will take the lead five minutes left to go and they will get, they'll be up 28, 24 and they'll get a stop inside their own 20 yard line. Marshall can't kick a field goal to win or tie the ball game. They'll need to touch down. Penn State will get a defensive stop inside their own 20 yard line as Marshall is driving down the field to win the football game.

28:44They'll get a stop. 28, 24 Penn State. This will be a football game. I, I'm having, I'm really having a hard time taking 24 and a half points. I do think that's a lot for Matt Campbell, first game, regardless of opponent, right? There, there's going to be jitters involved in again, the track record. Sometimes he beats up on the non-conference opponents and wins the way that he should decisively, multiple touchdowns. It's done and over with. And then there are other times again that Louisiana goes into, goes into Ames. There's other times where he struggled. I think it was northern Iowa took them down to the Wyrons like, okay, man, that's questionable. But at the same time, he can be to play off Oklahoma team. So it's really, it is really strange. The array of results that you have with Matt Campbell as a football coach here. I can tell you points. I can guarantee you points. I would like to think that this is a game. I would hope to see Penn State kind of keep Marshall at least in the 20s. And then they get to over 35 over 40 points to really keep this out of reach.

29:46If I'm my hopeful score prediction is that Penn State wins something like 42 to 24, okay? You're going to give up some points. Marshall's going to score a few touchdowns and just kind of, you know, keep fans on the edge of their seats. So that is my most aback door, almost aback door cover for Marshall. Yes, depending on when they score that final touch. Like they score that final touchdown against the second team and 13. Yeah. If it's something like 35 17. So in that, but I could see this also be notice how red Zact turned when I said it's going to be a football game. Can we get, we need, are you in the press box or do you watch these games at home? Because can we get a live feed of you watching this game as Marshall is going down the field to try and win it? I can only imagine how red you get. If that's a possibility, how nervous and flustered you might be, even though you know the stop is coming because I predicted it. How nervous you would be if it was this game into the fourth quarter.

30:49I probably had the same, I probably had the same expression if not worse against UCLA. So I've been there. I've been there. Done that type of this. This sounds very big lead that they blew, right? They were never in the lead in that game. Oh no. They, oh UCLA had a big lead and they almost came back in one. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. This sounds very reminiscent of bowling green. I don't know if you have any recollection of the Penn State bowling green game, where they just kind of traded touchdowns back and forth and eventually Penn State pulled away, but bowling green was just, this was week two, two years ago in 2024 and Penn State ended up when they kept bowling green in the 20 and it was a one score game. I don't, I think it was 30, it was 30 to 23, but bowling green went out and landed the first couple of punches. Yeah. So that's, that's the thing. If, if Marshall can withstand that initial push, they'll be in this football game. Now, you know, Penn State could get the ball or could be, you know, what if they say Penn State gets a football, Marshall, for whatever reason, decides to, you know, give the ball a Penn State

31:54to begin with. They get a score, they get a stop and they get another score. I mean, it could be 14 minutes to go or, you know, 14, nothing to go. Before, you know, the fans have gotten, you know, finished their first snack in the stadium. So that very well could happen. So if Marshall, Marshall needs to withstand that initial punch from Penn State, which is, I think inevitable. I'll say, I'll say 35 to 24. I do think Marshall's going to put up some points and I think Penn State has enough to keep them at an arms length. Keep this as a, and then that's where Marshall, hey, they're down Penn State allows that late touchdown and then that makes it look a lot closer than it seems. But still, I think that Penn State has enough, enough carryover and just the coaches and everything else that come together that keep this at a decisive game for the Niteny lines. But I wouldn't be surprised at Marshall lands those first couple of punches. So the score really is not all that big of difference in prediction.

32:56The difference is Marshall scores to make it 28, 24 and then Penn State scores a late touchdown to look like they pulled away a little bit. That you just said 35, 24. Yeah. So the scores aren't all that, all that different. I just, I think, I think Penn State will get a stop right at the end. And that's where hopefully the, the talent, by the way, we both have Marshall covering. We both have Marshall covering. We both have the total going to do it. Do you have the, I had the under I had the under I went right on that 52. They didn't teach math at Penn State. Did they know? I skipped math. I skipped math. Yeah. My understanding is that there would be no math. Can't even use that mean you can't even use that gift anymore. They took it off. I don't, you know, things just don't get better.
