Fetterman's Cross-Party Vote Sparks Democratic Divide

On March 21st, Pennsylvania Democrat Senator John Federman cast the key vote on Thursday

to advance Republican Senator Mark Wayne Mullins nomination for Homeland Security Secretary.

As the only Democrat on the Senate Committee to join several Republicans in support, Federman

helps send the nomination to the full Senate, where A, confirmation vote could happen next

week.

Federman has parted ways with his party several times lately, including strong backing

for Israel and various Republican ideas.

He explained his yes vote by noting he urged President Trump to fire the previous nominee,

Christy Knowham, after issues with immigration agents, and Trump did so.

Federman stressed the need for steady leadership at the department amid funding fights that shut

down some agencies.

Fellow Pennsylvania Democrats in the House voiced sharp frustration, one called Federman

Trump's favorite Democrat and said he needs to go.

Fedor accused him of abandoning constituents who deserve a fighter.

At a town hall, a third said she's had more success working with the state's Republican

Senator than Federman.

Democrats on the Committee oppose Mullin over concerns about past allegations tied to

encouraging political violence.

Federman countered that his vote builds on a solid working relationship with Mullin to

boost national security.

With the nomination now before the full Senate, this cross-party move highlights deepening
