Hello and welcome to the managing with your podcast. This is a special preview episode.
Recording this straight from the press conference room as you guys can see behind me possibly
if you're on YouTube. That is where both Arboloa and Bellingham spoke about an hour ago.
And this is my first time in Munich. My first time at the Allianz. Very nice arena. Got to say
we had a chance to, sorry, got distracted because they just told me I have to wrap it up soon,
which is totally unideal. But yeah, it's, we had a chance to go on the field on the pitch a few
minutes ago as well and watch Real Madrid players train. So that was kind of cool. But yeah,
here in my, and excuse me, I don't like to complain about anything, you know me. I'm unbelievably sick.
It's a miracle that I'm recording. I'm just giving you some context quickly. But why my voice
barely works right now, but I'm doing my best. Just giving you guys some quick thoughts from
the Allianz before tomorrow's game. I asked Arboloa before recording. I said,
what's the biggest thing that you need to improve on from the first leg? And he emphasized finishing.
And I don't think he's wrong. You know, I think with all the analysis we do with the team's problem,
and by the way, if they lose tomorrow, seasons over, obviously, it's the second consecutive year
where we're having the perpetual conversation. We have these players, these puzzle pieces don't
fit. The team lacks leaders. The team lacks this profile. It has too many of this profile.
It's two years, three coaches, same issues. So where are we going? It sounds like we're on a
treadmill right now. It's a very frustrating place to be. We'll save the obituaries for now
because tomorrow, Ram, to give them the benefit of the doubt, do you have the opportunity to make
history and come back away from home in the second leg after losing the first leg at home for the
first time since the 70s? So the most likely scenario is that we're talking about the season ending
tomorrow and it's going to be a disastrous ending. But we'll save the obituaries for tomorrow night
and give Ram to the benefit of the doubt. So maybe they'll make history tomorrow.
But I think Arbelo, excuse me, I don't think Arbelo was wrong. Two point out that finishing is
needs to improve. Whatever you want to say about the first leg and our eyes all told us, all of our
eyes told us that Bayern Munich dominated the first leg. By the end of it, Real Madrid had more
shots, more shots on target, Mr. Breakaway and Bapy must several big chances and they had a very,
very, very, very reasonable opportunity to go into the second leg tomorrow with at the very
least a draw. Now, look, I get it. Bayern also missed chances. Bayern can have the same complaints
about their performance. In the end, that's why I think Bayern winning by one goal is about right to
me. I'm okay with that. But I'm just saying that Real Madrid with a lot of their issues in their
ball progression, their issues in making mistakes or defensive issues, a lot of this microanalysis
wouldn't matter so much. It wouldn't be magnified so much if Rams are taking their chances.
Let's be honest, man. This is what we signed them back before. This is what we're paying them for.
It's these moments like that. Moments like tomorrow. Don't care about Elce. I don't care about
Las Palmas and Oviedo and I don't know why I'm putting Segunda teams in the mix right now.
It doesn't matter. And I know that's part of the problem of the culture. What I'm saying is
literally part of the problem of culture. This is why we don't have many league titles.
Or as many as we should for a club of the Satcher. I get it. It's part of the, like what I'm saying
is part of the problem. We emphasize the Champions League a little too much. But this is the reality
of our situation. We brought in Bapa in not to score one of his five chances. No, he needs to be
fucking clinical. There's no margin of error against his Bayern Munich team. They are an offensive
supernova. They are attacking Armageddon. Every time they had the ball in the first leg, it looked
like they were going to score or at least get into a clear cut chance. And quite frankly,
I actually, I'm not that concerned about scoring tomorrow. I think we will score at least one.
I just have really no confidence on the other end to prevent these guys from scoring because
the way they attack the way they get to their spots is so surgical. It's so fluid. Everyone's
going into these zones and overloading realm just midfield. Look at like Cain and Gnabri dropping
into midfield, overloading our midfielders and then center backs moving into attacking position.
Like these guys are just such a well oiled machine that love to generate chaos and they
break you down mentally. They break you down physically. You look at the way our passing look towards
the end of the first half of the first leg and it's like they just wear you down. You could see
that psychologically we were not ready for that occasion. We almost look under prepared,
despite knowing how great Bayern were. It's almost like we looked off caught off guard with how
good Bayern were in that first. And so despite all that, you could have gone in with a tie into
the second leg and you need to take your chances better. So those are really, I mean it comes
football is simple man. Football is pretty damn simple. The two things that we all just need to do,
attack and defend, they need to just be way better at. They need to take their chances and they
need to stop giving the ball away so much. Look at the chances that Bayern were generating.
A lot of them actually weren't through the build up phase. They were just putting so much pressure
on Real Madrid's backline to cough up mistakes. We've broken this down like five times as the
first leg. Benicius gave the ball away four times. Two of them led to a goal. Trent as great as
his assist was. Two of 11 long balls. He needs to be way better coming out of the back. If you're
going to exploit a team who virtually has no weaknesses, but the one weakness that they do have
or their Achilles heel is that we know they're going to generate going to give you a lot of space
and even that the space they have between the backline, it's kind of mitigated by their counterpress,
how well they defend and transition, but also newer flying off his line to cut out breakaways.
If you can still get past all of that, Trent is going to be key in those situations because
he has the ability to take one touch, maximum two touches, and fling that ball diagonally to
Venni and a Bappi in transition. A lot of onus going to be on him, on belling him and Goulare as
the team's primary ball progressers to calm everyone down, to chill everybody's blood, to help
escape pressure. I thought belling him and Goulare were both great in the first leg. Let's see
them replicate it from the start in the second leg. And Bappi and Venni, people have been asking,
why can't you coexist for years now? At one point, are you guys going to put it together?
Tomorrow would be a great starting point, man. We've been waiting for almost two years. We're tired
of having these conversations. We need these guys to stop up and elevate their games. And it's not
just about taking chances, but making the right decisions and transition. It's about making those
quicker passes. You think Byron are going to give you one two cracks at it. And I think this comes
back to Venni's decision making. He needs to be better and he needs to be quicker. He can't cook
the same player three times. People are waiting in the box. We're going to be attacking the box.
I have no doubt about it because we have no choice. And we actually did get numbers in the first
in the first leg into the box. And you look at even the positioning of Patarch and Fedet, for example,
when I'm back, they dropped deep in the first first saw. I'm back, it was making all the right runs
in the first leg. But in time, he did drop deep into midfield. Fedet and Patarch recognized that
immediately and flew into the center forward position and gave an out five minutes. Okay, thank you.
And they gave him an outlet. So we need to, by the way, this goes into an interesting point
because all these things, belling him was, was asked about this today. He said, he was asked,
why has it been like two years with the three of you not being able to coexist on the field,
Vinnie and I'm back. And you, and he said something interesting. He said, look, I don't know.
But we have freedom on the field. And maybe sometimes we all shift to the left too much.
Maybe I need to go to the right more to kind of decongestate a little bit. I'm paraphrasing what he
said. I thought that was interesting because these guys do have freedom. And sometimes it's really
just about in-game awareness about where everybody is, where they should be. A player is making
another run. Where should they go to kind of trade some space for their teammates?
Look, circular conversations, I know. We've had these conversations so many times.
Now we're in a situation tomorrow where we're playing. It's not only I think the best team
Real Madrid have faced this season. I think it's the best team anyone will face this season probably.
Part of the reason why it's the best team Real Madrid will face is because I think Bayern
are probably the best team in the world until proven otherwise. So to get past the hurdle tomorrow,
not only you need to take care of the ball way better because you know Bayern are going to force
to universe. You need to be way, way, way more efficient in transition, not only in making the
right pass in transition, but also taking those chances. It's not enough to put away one out of every
five chances. We need to be way more prolific. Every single Real Madrid champions league game where
they pulled a game out of their ass and won against all odds, even if they didn't play well.
They had super stars outperforming their XG, which is not something we're getting. So this goes
back to the idea of like a lot of the quote unquote microanalysis goes out the window if you just
take your chances because that's certainly what has defined a lot of Real Madrid success in the
past few years. A big question mark obviously who replaces two or many are below a set today that
he already knows is starting 11 for tomorrow. I think it kind of comes down to is Mendi ready.
If Mendi is ready in my opinion, he needs to start. I'm not actually as worried about match fitness
with somebody like him, only because he has proven twice the season. He can walk in with no match
fitness or rhythm, Olimpiacos, Manchester City, and look dominant. And based on what we saw,
Olisa versus Caritas, I think Olisa versus us was one of the best performances against Real Madrid by
an individual in the past 10 years. Not saying the best, but definitely one of the best. And to have
Mendi's experience there would be invaluable. I'm not saying Mendi will shut him down, but certainly
anything will be better than what we got in the first leg from Caritas. Not only with the 1v1
defensive aspect, but also taking care of possession as well. So if Mendi is fit and starts at left
back, that obviously changes things because you know, Kamal Bingo has been rumored to play at left
back as well. We don't know what's going to happen. I think he may very well go with double pivot up
at arch plus fede, but it's really, it doesn't really matter what it is on paper because it's so
fluid under Arbeloa. And we know Goulare is playing very deep with Arbeloa too. But I wouldn't be
surprised if we just see Patarchan and belling him just kind of slots in back into the starting 11.
I wouldn't be surprised if it's Kamal Bingo either as like the most like for like natural single pivot
replacement in the team for too many. But as I've said many times in the past few days, Kamal Bingo
in a game like this is concerns me just going to be honest with you because in some ways I would
actually prefer my left back or or left center mid because if you're receiving the ball with your
facing your own goal under pressure against a team like Byron, you're just going to be more prone
to coughing up possession than if you were a left back when you get the ball kind of opening up
your body and seeing the field in front of you. So that would be my concern with Kamal Bingo as well.
I'm sure there's things that I missed but I got to go here. I keep getting signals. They're
being really polite with me but I can't abuse my power too much. Guys tomorrow will either be a
season ending funeral or it will be an unlikely celebration either way it's for members. If you
