Giants' Draft Dilemma: Safety or Cornerback?

The New York Giants are set to pick in the top six of the NFL draft for the third straight

year.

That gives them plenty of strong options across positions.

In a recent CBS Sports mock draft, experts project them grabbing Ohio State safety, Caleb

Downes, with the fifth overall pick to boost their defense.

Downes started at Alabama before transferring to Ohio State, where he helped win a national title.

Last season, the defensive backmate 68 tackles, including five for loss, grabbed two interceptions,

and even scored on punt returns earlier in his career.

His dad, a running back, was once drafted by the Giants back in 1994.

Fans and analysts see Downes as a hard-hitting safety with great tools for the pros.

Still, some question if he is the best fit since the Giants already have solid safeties

like Javon Holland and Tyler Noobin, plus recent free agent, signings at the position.

Instead, a cornerback such as LSU's Mansour Delane might address a bigger need on the roster.

The Giants could get picky this high, or even trade down a few spots to stock up on more

picks, while still landing a player like him later in the first round.

With so many paths forward, the Giants look poised to add real talent no matter what, reshaping

their lineup for next season.
