Listen live, morning's at 10 on ESPN, New York, and streaming live on YouTube.
Rich Samini, who of course covers the Jets for ESPN NFL Nation and for us.
And he joins Bart and myself right now to break down day one.
Rich just saying, oh, Bart was just saying during the break.
I really appreciate how much Rich makes himself available for the show.
Does he get paid extra for that?
And I'm like, I don't know that he does.
I think Rich is just the guy.
Rich, you should start charging a little bit more.
Yeah, charging a little bit more at what's more than nothing.
I guess we could at least get close to Starbucks or something.
I believe the answer to that is Geno Smith.
Yeah, basically, I'd be working for Geno Smith wages.
But I do it because we're on the same team guys. It's about teamwork.
Yes, exactly.
Well, let's get right into it.
Day one, your evaluation of what the Jets get.
Well, they changed the personality or their defense in one day.
You know, with, and that's a good thing because it was not a good personality last year as everyone saw on their television screens and being at the stadium.
They just really upgraded in terms of a character leadership and tangibles experience, all those areas.
You know, starting with makeup, it's Patrick and Demario Davis and on Yamada, David on Yamada.
So they got really a good leader of savvy type guy on each level of the defense.
And so I think it was a good first day for the Jets.
They didn't break the bank for any of those players.
So I don't think they're capstrapped in any sense of the words.
So a really strong day, I think, for the Jets in terms of fixing the defense.
What's next on the shopping list because I know that the free agent shopping list.
You know, is going to indicate and dictate what we're going to do in the draft.
So, you know, we would think we're losing very Tucker and losing.
Um, um, the, who's uh, Simpson.
Yeah, Simpson.
It was a simple one for the rate.
Ravens went back home with Stevie Wonder saw that one coming, especially when anybody seen down your filet late play last year.
You knew that was going to happen.
What's on it?
What's on the grocery list for the Jets?
Well, uh, right there.
I'd left guard.
You know, the Jets believe it or not have only four veteran offensive lineman under contract right now.
So, uh, yeah, they, they have to work on their depth there.
So I suspect they'll sign a guard.
Perhaps today, you know, they have the draft as well.
So there, that's going to be an area of emphasis.
They're going to have to try to fix.
The other position is, is like the lead.
We buried the lead is the quarterback.
And I know you guys have been talking about, you know, Smith.
A lot.
And, uh, they got to get this quarterback thing figured out.
I don't think things will start moving till probably tomorrow.
When the league year starts after four, when guys like Geno Smith and Kyler Murray officially become available.
Um, I, I think as crazy as it sounds, it'll be one of the more unlikely reunions in NFL history.
But I, I think, I think Geno to the Jets.
Kind of makes sense, you know, in the sense of that it would be a marriage of convenience because who else is out there?
You know, I mean, I don't think Kyler Murray is coming to the Jets.
I think he prefers the Vikings.
So if you're the Jets and you need a starting caliber quarterback, who, who are you going for?
I do not believe they're interested in Kirk cousins.
Nor do I think the feeling is mutual there.
So I, I think Geno might be it and perhaps Carson Wentz as well.
Yeah, that's, that's not a great situation.
But I don't, but I don't think it says, I don't, I think Geno maybe gets a.
A bad rep. Like he played above average football in Seattle.
Now, last year I get my pass, he had Chip Kelly.
But when you talk about what Frank Wright wants.
A above average as far as height quarterback that can play off of play action.
Does Geno does Geno kind of, especially if protected, does Geno fit the bill?
Well, Bart, I mean, he hasn't played great the last two years.
I mean, he had two, you know, really nice years in Seattle as a starter.
And then that last year in Seattle, he took a lot of sacks.
He threw a lot of picks.
And then last year, I know was a dysfunctional situation with the Raiders changing coordinators and the past protection was miserable.
So I get that. But, you know, he did throw 17 interceptions.
So it was not a good year. So I mean, can they, can they get him as a reclamation project and turn him into something I, you know, I, he can throw the ball.
We all know that any jet fan who watched, you know, he was always could spin the ball.
Just, you know, the decision making hasn't been great the last couple of years.
And that's what Frank Wright would have to work on.
Richa Mania is with us. All right. So with the quarterback situation, you can simply answer this question by saying Chris Uranity.
Okay. Um, we have talked about this a lot because it came, it did come from somewhere interesting last week.
None of us really believe that Mac Jones is going to be made available because he was just San Francisco.
Why would you try it him away? But Adam, chef, you're brought it up on a sportsman like that.
If you are the jets at the very least, wouldn't you try to offer them, if you offered them a second round pick, they very well might take it.
Am I an idiot for thinking that is something worth doing for the jets or is it just folly at this point?
I don't think anything can be considered folly. I mean, the jets are in a desperate situation here.
So I am fairly certain that Darren Moody's probably talked to every team in the league about their quarterback situation.
So I'm guessing that he probably has called the 49ers to see what it would take to get Mac Jones out of there.
You know, I don't think the jets would want to give up a two. That's a pretty substantial commitment to a guy.
You know, he's got one year left on his contract. You probably have to do some sort of extension, you know, to try to keep him around.
Much like they just did with Minka Fitzpatrick who only had one year left and they extended him.
So, I guess, I mean, the desperation, you know, forces people to do some, you know, outlandish things sometimes.
I don't, it wouldn't be the top of my list. I never, I haven't gotten a sense from talking to anyone that that is something that they're plotting to do.
I think they're more interested in bringing on a guy who's at the minimum salary like a like a geno Smith or a Kyler Murray.
So let's, this is, we're not what I'm getting at here overall. I understand what the availability is in free agency.
It feels like when we talk about, well, they may just settle on Geno Smith or it may be Carson Wentz.
It feels like that's, let's get through another year and try to get our guy again next year. You know what I mean? And it, and that, absolutely.
It feels like, well, we're in the tank again, not fully in the tank. They obviously are better, but not better to the point where it's eight, nine, win type potential.
And that would separate to me, the general manager from the coach, because if that's the case, nothing, you can get somebody great immediately, but it doesn't feel like that at quarterback, whether it's Geno or someone of that ilk.
It's going to really give them a chance to compete.
Well, the jets are trying to thread a needle here because they're trying to win games this year. I mean, they're trying, they got to save their jobs most, most, most, most, more specifically Aaron Glenn.
You know, so he's got a show that he's got a show improvement this year, but at the same time, I think they are looking at 2027 in the draft, you know, is to get their long term answer at quarterback.
So it's a very difficult balancing act that they're trying to do. I mean, how do you do that? You know, you want to win seven or eight games so you get to come back the next year, but yet, you know, you can end up with a middle of the round draft pick, but you do have the, you know, you do have the three ones next year.
And so you have plenty of ammo to move up that, of course, doesn't guarantee you that you're going to get to one, two or three. What if one, two and three are desperate for quarterbacks and they're not moving.
Exactly. I mean, they're at you right now and they can't get to one theoretically from what we believe they can't get to one.
Right. I mean, the same thing could happen next year. I mean, it happened to happen to the giants, you know, a couple of years ago when they couldn't get to one, two or three for one of those quarterbacks.
And so yeah, the jets are, it's a really interesting situation they're in. I think they're threading a needle. They got to try to win games this year. I mean, they're not going to totally tank. I don't think this is going to be a, you know, a suck for Sam year, like it was in 2017, but they got to get something.
I mean, that year they had Josh McCown, who was actually had a pretty decent year for the jets. So if they could get something like that out of the quarterback position, they got to try to build up the rest of the roster with this draft capital. They got four out of the first, the 44 this year.
And then they got four of the first, you know, it's two rounds next year. You got to try to build up the roster as much as you can then drop in your quarterback next year.
And that's the blueprint. Anyway, now I was going to go with another question, but you break up, break up a very good point when you was talking about, you know, they, they built up this team and it looks like when you look at what they did with a motto with the two outside of side,
and you know, the two outside past rushes looks like they're priming ready to move to a full time three, four type of defense.
With that being said, with what they brought in, because you don't pay a guy $10 million a year, you don't pay a guy $12, $12, $12 million a year, and then have will McDonald, you don't do that.
Just to pay them to be there for one year, you're hoping that they can become like Calvin pace or Brian Thomas where they may not be great passwords, but they're all great guys and stopping to run when you think about a motto.
It was I think 11th and run stock rate and you look at the guy they traded for he was four and you already have Phillips and you have bricks.
So that's to me, symbolize that they're going to go to a three four and they're going to say, hey, you're not going to run the ball on me.
So with that being said, is that an indication of what they maybe want to do with the number one pick, because now I'm confused. Now I'm thinking that maybe Caleb Downs is somebody that they may want to get.
Or do they go with a, you know, Arville Reese and have them be like a jack of all trades type of player.
I'm still leaning toward Arville Reese or David Bailey Bart. I think they're in that, you know, I think Reese would probably be the guy I would favor at this point.
I do, I believe they are going to a three four. I've had a number of people tell me that, I mean, are they going to live in a three four? Of course not. No one lives in a three four anymore.
You know, you have multiple fronts and that's why I think they've got some players here who are versatile that can play in different spots like on your motto played on the nose for Atlanta.
But I think the jet see him as a three technique or even a five tech. So he's got some versatility. You know, it brings us a three technique, you know, Harrison Phillips can play the one.
You know, you bring in a side and he was pretty much a defensive event for the Bengals. Maybe you stand them up for the jets. You know, they got Kingsley, whose last name I won't try to pronounce from the Packers and he's more of an out he can stand up and he's an up and down guy.
So you have a lot of versatility in the front seven, but I think when all said and done, there'll be a three four base. And I think you, you know, where does Will McDonald fit in that, you know, I think he can be both, you know, he's he can be a down guy. He could be an outside linebacker.
And you bring in a guy like R bell Reese. I think he would be the final piece to the puzzle.
I mean, he's really good and he can play a number of different spots, but it kind of it kind of indicates me, right, because you talk about a three four. That's two inside linebackers.
I don't know how they feel about, you know, do they have buyers remorse with Sherwood last year.
As far as I think he'd be an inside linebacker with the Mario.
Yeah, but if our real Reese is there, you don't bring a first round draft pick that's an inside linebacker, not to play inside linebacker.
Well, I mean, unless they play him on the edge, you know, they can play him on the edge.
But they just, but that's what started to do.
But that's why I'm confused because they just spent $22 million on guys that can stand up and will McDonald's the first round draft pick that can stand up.
Now you see why I'm confused and thinking, well, are they going to go with a, are they going to go with with Caleb down.
That's why I'm.
Yeah, I'd be a little surprised that they took a safety there.
That's, I mean, will McDonald.
I think there's some thought in there that he's best suited as a third down guy, you know, as a third down rusher.
So maybe he's not the every down player anymore that he was, you know, now that you can bring in Joseph Asai, who was a three down player for Cincinnati.
I think it just creates a lot of versatility, what they can do.
And none of these guys are great pass, right?
Well, will will.
The only one that's a great.
That's what I'm saying.
Will's the only one that's a great pass rusher.
When you the word great with Will McDonald.
I mean, he had 10 stacks one year.
Last year was a, you know, pretty significant falloff for him.
I think he's a decent pass rusher.
I think you bring in a guy like our bill Reese who has a chance to be really a high end pass rusher.
I think that changes the whole look of your front seven.
It's just versatility.
I think that's what they're trying to build up here.
See, but this is, but for me, this is how I, how I see it.
Being that I played in a fourth or three, four, you know, every year in my career.
I look at Will McDonald.
When I watch Will McDonald, I see to me one of the best natural pass rushers in all the football.
Natural, you talk about ankle, flexion, elite spin move, a long arm, staff.
But when you play him in a four, three or three or a four, three like they did last year.
That allows you to slide coverage to him.
When you go into three, four, the beauty of the three, fours, you got the five technique or the three technique sitting right there.
So you get no help from the guard.
So this, and my pain will isolate him as like the Calvin, not the Cal paste, but the Brian Thomas type.
Or what we would say to real sucks, the weak side stand up linebacker.
Because now you have help setting the edge because you have a defensive lineman that's kind of in the big gap.
That's helping you to be able to set the edge as well.
So for me, this is a better move for Will McDonald to be at every down back.
Because he can be a pass rusher, but he's athletic enough to go drop in the hook curl flat.
So maybe carry like a tight end up the rail or something with his speed and athleticism.
Yeah, you're getting way in the weed.
Or feet barred, but, but I mean, I appreciate the access and those talk, but you know, I think what they're just trying.
I mean, I think you get into laundry sweat, you know, that tells you a three hundred and six pound nose.
And you got like the holdover guys like briggs and fill ups who complete different spots.
And so I think they're just trying to create versatility.
I mean, three four, that's the great thing about the three fours.
You know, no, which guys are coming at different times.
It offers you more flexibility that way.
And so I think that's what they're just trying to do.
The NFL has changed a lot from the days of what the New York Giants played a three four.
And it would, you know, you knew exactly where every guy was on the same play.
You knew where banks was and you knew where else he was.
I mean, the game has changed a lot as you know.
And I think the Jets are just trying to create more options and flexibility.
And they don't have like one blue chip rusher right now.
I mean, I don't consider Wilma John, a blue trip past Russia, right?
He's probably a notch below that.
But you bring in a guy like Reese or Bailey.
And then you, you know, you got a blue chip Russia.
And I just think it adds to your.
I see a repertoire.
It's like a picture coming up with a new.
A new pitch, you know, a new out pitch.
So that's what I think they're looking for.
Okay.
So last one for me, right?
And, you know, I was we've speaking about this off air before you came on.
You know, another vital position.
Maybe not as vital with some of the other ones.
Is a number two receiver.
Obviously Garrett Wilson, right?
To take some some pressure off him when, when Devonta Adams came and opened everything up.
Now, we know that Aaron was throwing a ball too much to him.
But kind of interesting, but falling out of favors, Brian Thomas and Jacksonville.
And I know that, you know, it's been reports here that maybe the Giants want to go.
And pursue him too.
But with pick number 16, do you see that as a wide receiver?
And do you think that it's any belief or any thought going into maybe sand if.
Brian Thomas is available to be that number two wide receiver as he doesn't seem to fit in the new offense.
In Jacksonville.
Yeah.
He's on the outs in Jacksonville.
I do believe the Jets are.
Very definitely monitoring that situation at Jacksonville.
I think he's available.
And he'd be a fascinating pickup.
I would not be shocked if the Jets did something like that.
He's got two years left on his rookie contract.
You know, obviously a very inexpensive cost.
He had a phenomenal rookie year.
And for whatever reason, he just knows dive last year.
And he had six.
You know, his drops double.
And the amount of drops last year.
He had some hesitancy go over the middle from what I've been told that he fell out of favor with the coaching staff.
So I mean, he goes from one great year to one lousy year, but there's still a lot of upside there.
And for a team like the Jets, the Jets don't want to spend a lot of money on that number two wide receiver spot because they know they could get a guy.
And the first or second round and plug him right in there.
So that's why a guy like Brian Thomas Jr. intrigues them because he wouldn't cost a lot financially.
And you could get him for what, like a five or something like that.
I don't think, you know, four, maybe a swap of picks, one of those type things.
I don't think it would cost a lot.
So that's why I think they're intrigued, but I'm sure a lot of other teams are intrigued as well.
Rich great stuff.
We appreciate it.
Thanks for popping on for a few busy time.
All right.
I'm going to go study some three, four tape now barges.
That okay.
Absolutely.
All right.
Listen, I'm not smart enough to even do anything but black out when we start getting into the big gap stuff.
Then I'm done.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But yeah, that's why I got to go brush up on my stuff right now.
So I can, so I can go right back at Bart next time we talk.
Appreciate it Rich.
Thanks.
All right guys.
That's a good one.
And that's, that's the beauty of a part is that I'm always going to learn something every day.
When you're trying to figure out how well McDonald's can be much more effective in a three four this year.
It makes more sense to me.
I think well McDonald would be just as good as Arville Reese on the outside.
I remember he's a first round draft pick for a reason.
And he was little undersized to be trying to set the edge.
But you don't have to be as big to set the edge when you have a big guy right next to you.
You see what I'm saying?
So like when I say big gap.
No, I understand.
To the weak side to the weak side.
It's only two people on that side.
It's a garden attack.
So that means he just has to fight the tackle.
They can't scoop up to him and double him and chip him and all that stuff because it's just two on two.
And he's got in the tackle.
He's already he's always going to be outside leverage.
He's going to be wider than the tackle.
You see what I'm saying?
Yeah.
No, I completely understand if you can't double the guy and you have to account.
And he just outside differently than he obviously has a much more favorable matchup to try to get home.
Because no matter what, you don't know who's coming in a in a in a three four.
But it's still five on five.
So it's no dropping or rushing.
If it's a run, if it's a run, then it's just five on five.
So now you're gapped out and you're already outside the guy with the leverage.
So he has to try and beat your leverage by trying to get around you, which is impossible because you're in a wide nine.
You're wider than him.
He has to come to you.
No, you have to do is put your near hand near near arm out and set an edge.
But you can always just come off the edge if the ball goes outside because you don't have to worry about the gap widening because the wider this guy pushes you.
The other guy's outside leverage of the guard.
So he can the guard can't stop him from getting up the field.
Yeah.
No, I completely understand.
And if that's going to make Will McDonald a much more effective pass rusher, then that's what you do.
And I didn't want to go back to fourth with rich about Will McDonald and his past Russian ability.
The reason why he only has seven sacks where he had ten before because they never have a lead.
And the only thing that I didn't love about McDonald with that is they came in bunches too.
Like they were two and three and one game and stuff like that.
And I remember like he's only been here three years.
The first year he was just learning and figuring stuff off.
So you get that past all young past rusher.
Here's a couple of the comments that are coming in from the ESPN New York chat over on YouTube channel.
Judge Ace Anthony Jetson trade for Mac if he's available has playoff experience with the pads and Niners.
What options to the Jets seriously have left a second round pick is well worth it.
We have talked about that quite a bit.
We know that he's available we don't end it like from what.
Rich is saying there with as active as mousi has been.
You would expect that the call has been made Nicholas Puello is to Kyler that much of a sure thing to go to the Vikings.
I don't know if I call it a sure thing.
It's just what we've heard a lot over the last few days.
And again, as Bart has spoken about you can't really get.
And the mix on the quarterbacks because Kyler is not becoming a free agent technically until tomorrow.
Although the same thing was happening with Tua and he signed.
Well, no, he didn't sign.
They say he intends to sign.
Intense to sign.
Well, they could say intends to sign with Kyler.
So that'll be interesting.
Well, maybe he knows because this is the thing.
This is the thing about Kyler Murray to Minnesota.
If Kyler Murray goes to Minnesota.
That guarantees that JJ McCarthy is probably done.
If they sign Kirk cousins.
You still can keep.
JJ McCarthy around long enough to still develop and still show that you believe in him.
Kyler Murray is young.
He's looking for a opportunity to find his next home to be a starter.
Where Kirk cousin knows this is closer to the end.
And with Kirk cousins, you know, the Minnesota Vikings are strapped for cash.
That's what they're letting a lot of guys that they just signed last year.
Go and waving them.
Whether it was Jonathan Allen.
Jonathan Allen.
They let him go.
Right.
So rather is that.
And I'm sure they can.
But he has to play well in the last two years.
Yeah.
You know, that's why I washed and let him go.
So with that being said.
Kirk cousins fits their financial model too.
Because they have to make a decision on on Addison in a minute as well.
If Brian Thomas is only going to cost you a four or a five.
And you just got a four and a five.
What are we talking about?
You just got a four and a five.
Yeah, I would.
Compensatory.
Without even blinking.
Like I thought that was more like a three.
But if it's even a three, I would trade for Brian Thomas.
Because I've seen what he can do.
I mean, and it just didn't fit for whatever reason last year in Cohen system.
So much so today when it made a trade for the guy.
So they already got their two.
They already got their two receivers.
Dave B checking in.
Don't put last season on the players when you have the worst coaching and league history.
I wouldn't say worst in league history.
There have been some pretty bad coaches in league history.
Yeah, I think maybe it's one of them Cleveland staffs are there somewhere.
The jets have seen it too.
I mean, there was the Kota years for Pete.
King Jordan coach Scott.
Coach part.
Let's go.
I'm just saying.
You know, when you look at all the assets that they acquired, you like, well, they already
got starters in that position.
Briggs played well.
Like they keep it.
They just let's me know because what happens is when you when you go to a three, four.
Now you need more big guys.
Right.
Because you have three interior linemen.
Not two.
Right.
Because now you have five man front.
Not a four man front.
So the fact that they keep stacking up on a motto.
Harrison Phillips.
Oh, who's the kid they traded for again?
Briggs.
No, Tyson or whatever.
The guy they got from for domain jobs.
Oh, Tavangerie sweat.
Tavangerie sweat.
That's three guys.
He's a big dude, but he's an athletic dude.
Right defensive line.
But that's that's three guys, right?
You know, so when you look at their roster, they really, they're really stacking up.
They're really stacking up on on multiple type of big guys in the middle.
Who had the best day yesterday?
Hmm.
We will get into that in moments.

Told you one thing that I had heard the other day that I thought was.
Like very likely to happen.
Was Arizona going to get Jimmy G.
But Arizona looks like they're riding with.
Jacobi percent as their guy.
So would you go Jimmy G here?
Future jets.
I would not hate that.
Because you know that.
I know he's going to get hurt.
I mean this year you know they're preparing for.
The exodus of Matthew staff.
It is probably Matthew staffers last year coming up his last a raw.
I wouldn't be surprised.
Keep saying that man.
The guy goes wins an MVP.
Yeah, but his whole back was hurt.
And you know, he is his wife had cancer couple years ago and they beat that.
And you know, he's getting up there in age.
I think he's about ready to walk off to the sunset.
He's got his title.
So he doesn't have anything to prove.
And he was close to retirement last year.
So what I'm saying is I think that.
I wouldn't be surprised dark horse.
That the Rams drive.
Ty Simpson.
They have two first round draft picks.
I can see them.
They traded one day first round draft picks.
The Rams.
The Rams.
I think they had to.
Yeah, they do.
So the last year's draft.
Right.
And then maybe going out.
And maybe drafting Ty Simpson.
The Rams.
The pick that they kept.
Let me just double check.
They kept 13 and they traded.
22.
Yeah, they kept 13.
Okay.
Right.
Trader 22.
I mean, I don't know if I can go tie.
13.
29 maybe.
They might move back.
If anything.
They didn't have.
They couldn't have 13.
Oh, who did you have?
That's right.
That's right.
Because Atlanta moved back up to get James Pierce.
The past Russia.
I can see.
I can trade it away.
29.
Right.
So.
Man.
But I can you can't see them getting Ty Simpson.
But man, if Caleb Williams or the kid from Toledo is there.
They need.
They need to improve that secondary.
To litify the opportunity to.
Kill a manager or Emmanuel McNeil Warren.
Yeah, McNeil Warren.
Okay.
Let's hit a little sideline to sideline.
Tom Bauer busy day, busy busy day.
Let's go Tom.
sideline to sideline.
It's going to happen.
This.
sideline.
sideline.
sideline.
sideline.
sideline.
That's what we call time.
That was snuck.
No massive hole.
That's what we do around here.
Tom.
Floreshore.
All right.
Well, we teased it yesterday.
We didn't know what was going to officially happen.
But it is official now to attack if I low up.
Is an Atlanta Falcon.
He signs a one year minimum deal.
Giving Atlanta two.
Not one.
Two.
Lefties.
On their roster.
He'll compete with Michael Pennick Jr.
As he recovers from injury to giving himself another chance in Atlanta.
Listen.
Um.
That's because he know he can start.
Because Pennick's is hurt.
At the beginning of the year he's going to start.
Yeah.
And it's good for Atlanta because now you have two lefties.
The space.
The franchise pits, right.
The capsule.
Yeah.
Yeah.
The franchise pits.
Bring it back.
You know, you're playing indoors.
He's not robson.
You're getting all of they did lose LG.
I mean, you're playing in Tampa.
Yeah.
I mean, Carolina.
New Orleans.
Yeah.
You know, so in terms of controlling the atmosphere and the environment that you're playing
and he's certainly able to do that.
Not that I thought that was a huge deal anyway.
But he comes huge.
He comes from a huge play action.
Not dink and dunk.
But he comes to a huge play action past type of situation, right.
Do you think this was the best option for him?
I believe so.
Yeah.
Because you have a team that needs him.
A place where he can go play immediately.
And kind of trying to reset his market.
His pinnocks is coming back.
He has tremendous strong run game.
He has a number one receiver.
He has a solid offensive line.
When you think about, you know, Atlanta spent a lot of money on their offensive line.
And, you know, you're going to play in great conditions.
Pretty much the whole year.
The Raiders.
They had themselves a day.
They spent a lot of money to improve their team around their soon to be quarterback.
Assumingly, Fernando Mendoza.
Tyler Lindenbaum or Lindenbaum.
Excuse me.
Quay Walker.
Nicobie Dean.
Jalen Naylor.
Quiddy Pay and Eric Stokes.
Among all the signings that the Raiders had yesterday.
Possibly the most successful day.
I have to tell you.
They may have paid the Raiders tax here and there.
But I think they did really well.
Yeah, they didn't pay the Raiders tax with Quay Walker and Nicobie.
No, they paid it on Lindenbaum.
Yeah, they paid on Lindenbaum.
But they did, they got a, they got a big rebate back because they dropped the max crossbeam money.
And it's funny, right?
They say, okay, Ravens, you can take, you can take our best player.
We're going to take one of your most important players.
Because with the money we say, we're going to overpay him.
Because now we don't have to overpay max crossbeam.
You know, if he would have wanted another deal or anything like that.
So like, actually, they actually got a surplus of money back for trading max crossbeam.
You then they got a poor man's max crossbeam in witty pay who has kind of underachieved, you know,
being drafted by Indianapolis.
It was a free agent.
They didn't try and sign them back.
So I mean, that is a smart screw move.
But soaks is not a bad player.
Right.
Like they, I think they genuinely improved yesterday.
And then Mendoza is the real deal.
He'll be throwing them to Bowers and he'll be throwing.
You know, he'll have genty, but you'll talk about how important.
And I witnessed this relationship.
How important like Nick Mangle was to a young Mark Sanchez.
Yep.
And helping him say, don't worry about making any line checks.
I got this.
I'll make the checks.
I'll change.
I'll see the blitz.
I'll get us in the right protection.
You don't worry about it.
You just call it a place.
I like it.
I like it.
The Raiders had a good day.
Next two top receivers off the market.
First one.
Less surprising.
Grashit Shaheed.
Here's rumor to possibly go to the Giants, but he's going to stay in Seattle.
Three years, $51 million.
That includes $34.7 million.
Guaranteed.
The bigger one.
Maybe a more shocking one to Florida football fans.
Mike Evans.
Leaving the Buccaneers for a three year deal with the 49ers.
That's worth up to 60.4 million.
Only 16.3 Guaranteed.
So for Mike Evans, I.
From what I can gather.
They still were in on bringing him back.
They didn't shun him all together.
But he kind of wanted the change of scenery.
After spending his entire career in Tampa Bay.
I mean, been able to play for.
A guy like Shanahan, which with a team that you know is always going to be right there.
To go to a championship and be, you know, look what they did with all the industries that they had.
And he gets a goal there and also be a mentor.
But, you know, it was time for Mike Evans because those young guys were on his butt.
Yeah.
You're in Bucca.
Yep.
And you had, you had a guy where he was going to be back.
And they brought back.
I didn't so.
And they also got to have another one.
I think.
Collins name.
Yeah.
So like at some point, like their value was diminished there.
With the whole brand and I you can.
That's why I need to figure out what the hell.
Who's going to end up a brand and I you.
McMillan.
Jalen McMillan.
Who the hell.
I don't know.
That's a great question.
All right.
Somebody's going to get him for cheap.
We just got like he could ball out.
I'm saying we got a former great receiver.
That they let Deebo go for.
Yeah, you got hurt when they let Deebo when they decide let Deebo go.
But man.
He was a dude.
Yeah.
I'm very.
It is a dude.
And I don't know what the hell happened with you.
Well, somebody's going to get him for nothing.
That's what's going to happen.
Correct.
Somebody's going to get him for nothing.
I do for Mike Evans though.
Like the move a lot.
It's.
It's a great spot for him to go to at this point in his career.
And he can still be very, very effective out there.
That's a good move.
Good move.
Next.
Quick mention before I get to the running back.
Slowly to steal out there from Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler.
Dawson knocks returns to the bills on the three-year contract.
It's weird.
Yeah.
What do you do?
How many more tight ends can they sign?
That's weird.
Keep giving those two guys all that money.
Yeah.
You think in K.
Like you might want to instead of getting DJ more.
I'm not.
Back up.
That's what I'm saying.
Instead of getting.
And another thing about why I like the three four.
I was going to it is because all these teams are going to tight ends.
So now you basically got four against seven.
You know, and then off the ball guy, which they can double team and work up to guys.
When you have a three, when you have a three, four, you got five against five or six against five.
And the numbers are better because you have bigger bodies to kind of match up with the math.
Because what they do is they go these two tight ends, you know, put them to the same size.
So you got one long ass side.
And he's just double double and they catch for the edge and don't block the back side.
Right.
Right.
Look, if that's going to help them be able to stop the run and be able to be more effective against teams like Buffalo, all the power to.
And I'll believe in it.
I'll definitely believe in it.
Next.
Now to the running backs.
First off with Chris Carlin's Pittsburgh Steelers.
They're signing Greco Dowdell to a two year 12.25 million dollar deal.
Nunder rated signing in my books.
Dowdell, of course, leading the Panthers with over a thousand Russian yards before limiting his production at the end of the year.
And Travis at the end to the new Orleans Saints four years.
52 million.
What's that going to mean for Alvin Camara?
That is what's on Saints.
But is anything left for Alvin Camara?
Does he have anything left in the tank? He's 31.
But he's only been playing for like 10 years.
He doesn't take a lot of hits.
He has won some of the best balance contact balance of anybody.
We've seen in a long time.
We talk about Derek Henry.
And he's been playing when he was at his height.
Like him and Chris McCaffrey was the most complete backs.
Camara?
Oh, absolute.
Chester football.
He's great at blocking, which is weird.
You know, because he's a smaller guy.
But he absolutely can go somewhere.
I wouldn't be surprised to see him go to Detroit.
So Camara this past year.
Only played in 11 games.
That's issue one.
Average 3.6 a carry.
131 carries.
It is horrible.
And receptions only had 33 catches this past year.
And the yards per reception.
Way down at 5.6.
Who was he playing with?
I know.
They come into the day to later in the season.
Yeah, they weren't as bad as we thought they were going to be.
Right.
But it does make me wonder what's left there for him.
Well, he may.
He's not released, right?
Uh, no.
He's still there.
Right.
So I mean, they may see him as a, hey,
let's take some, some, some, some this.
Some of it off.
Some of this off of you.
And what the thing is.
Travis DC and TN is a great receiver to ball too.
So it's like, yeah.
Tom.
Interesting.
Anything else?
Yeah, I do have one more for you.
One more.
Carolina Panthers.
They got Jalen Phillips earlier in the day.
That was a four year one.
20 million deal.
And then they also kept it off with Devon Lloyd.
Three years 45.
I thought that he may have gotten paid a little bit more.
Yeah.
But Carolina beefing up on defense.
But here's the thing about the three year.
He's going to get another big one.
He's going to be a free agent before you know it.
Linda Bob to the same thing.
Right.
So the thing is he'll be 27 28 as a linebacker.
Then he'll get a four or five year deal.
And let's just say if that's $15 million, right?
So here's 15 million.
That's what 15 million times four.
That's 60.
You know, you look at that.
That'd be $105 million over four years.
I mean, over all five years or 60.
So when you got your first,
your first deal, for another word,
your second deal when you were a free agent for the first.
It was a three year deal.
And it was how old were you 25?
26?
I was 24 bucks.
Yeah, I was 25.
25.
So when you became a jet, you were 29.
28.
28.
Okay.
Yeah, I mean, look,
it's a great deal if you put yourself in that position
to still get a big money deal later on.
Yeah, you just have to play well through the three years.
Barton Carlin, he has been in New York.
He's currently on the woods in the city.
That's just a fairly good deal.

King Jordan chime in with a couple of things. Number one,
if we're drafting ESPN shows or trading ESPN shows, how do we do it?
See this is insulting to me. Bart traded to the morning
for two second round picks. Carlin midday show receives
Rick and a first round pick. Number one, no. I'm not trading Bart.
Number two, breaking up the wood. And I mean, Rick and a first round pick back.
I mean, it's a little insulting to Rick too. Is it not? Like,
you're never going to find anybody not to be happy with what the compensation
would be for what they are. Yeah, trade everything. Yeah.
I mean, I mean, I'm talking about like meal plans,
like hot chocolate machine. Uh, and also he brings up nets and pistons
tonight rematch. No spark is not bringing it up yet. Man, this is this
respect, man. I can't. I think is I think the problem is a
sewer Thompson has been hurt. Maybe, but they still should be good enough to
beat the damn. If they don't, if they don't smack the holy crap out of the
next day, then I'm giving up my champ, my champion. I gotta give it to
Boston, man. Uh, Kev Chadda. If the Jets trade back a few spots down,
would you do it at two 16 33 or 44? In other words, if you were to trade
back out of any of those picks, which pick would you trade back out of?
Would you trade out of two to move back? Yeah, I would trade out of two.
Like somebody would have to be in love with Arville Reese. Yeah, I would go move
up to two. I would move any farther than five. Right. Which is the giants.
The giants want to say, all right, we'll get you next year's one. And I got four
ones next year. I doubt it'd happen, but it's not a bad idea.
They want and they want Arville Reese. The giants desperately wanted Arville Reese.
Then I'll just take Bailey. I'll just take sunny styles.
Whatever. I can teach sunny styles how to rush the passive from outside.
Uh, let's see here. Carlin's shirt is blending into the wall.
It looks like a floating head.
Great. Great screen. Is that a blue screen?
I guess so. I think RJ was doing the same thing on the morning show.
I wasn't doing it intentionally, but it can't be a first of all, my head would sink.
It wouldn't be floating. It wouldn't be floating anywhere.
Is that one of my visible strings?
And then, uh, Mooshie doesn't seem like the type to miss on guys, but maybe he missed on
Devon Lloyd. I don't know if spending that kind of money on Devon Lloyd for the jets would have
been the best one. Well, do you want to spend that much money knowing that you pay
sure what last year? Yeah, I wouldn't think so.
Yeah, that'd be too much of a resources in one position.
Yeah, that doesn't make much sense to me. Let's hit John in Princeton who's been patient waiting.
John, what's going on, dude? How are you?
Hey guys, sorry. So I was listening to you guys talking over to the meeting and I know
Bart felt that maybe taking our Val Reese would be questionable because they just hired or they
just signed a couple of guys. But I'm a little bit of a draft orc.
So what I've noticed and the guys, especially the XGMs and the guys who are the really good
GMs, when they fill their team, basically they want to go into the draft,
have in every position filled so that they're not drafting for need and they're drafting just,
hey, this is the best player on the board at this valuable position.
So to me, that's still reached because he can play three positions on the field.
And he's just a rare talent with what he can do with his speed and he's got shot power in his
hands. But that's just, I think what the Jets are just trying to do is just fill up everything first
and then just take the best or and that gives you that flexibility to mount down if you want.
No, I get that. I mean, I get the idea of trying to fill needs in free agency and then draft
the best player that you can based on how you evaluated here over the next month or so.
I don't have a problem with that. I don't have a problem really with how the Jets are handling
any of what's going on right now. They're like, they got better defensively yesterday.
And you heard Rich say this earlier that they got better in terms of their overall demeanor on
defense as well with the leadership and all that. The thing that I'm, Bart, I just don't want to
seem get run over again. I don't want to see them giving up chunks of yardage on the ground again.
Yeah. And to do that, they got physical. They put some big bodies in front so you can't get to
these linebackers, which last year was small, right? When you think about, you know,
Quincy Quincy's a explosive player, but he was only like 5, 10, 2, 20, then, you know,
sure was a converted receiver as well. Same thing. So, you know, it was good to see them kind of
do it that way. Don't forget tomorrow, noon. It'll join us every Wednesday at noon.
Phil Sims will join us. We'll get his take on the first couple of days of free agency and,
of course, what the draft is looking like in terms of the quarterbacks.
Thanks for listening to the Bard and Carlin Podcast.
