Oh, everybody and welcome the P H O I equals podcast on the beautiful Wednesday a week one Wednesday live from the Expanded Studio and presented by Ashley Boat Wolf brand up. He and he's back ladies and gentlemen. We got him. You saw him at the Ospreys, but really you haven't seen him in studio in months. Dan is selling the professor is here. He's had his yearly haircut. He's looking great. He's feeling good. How you doing? semi annual. Twice a year, twice a year. Yeah. Yeah. What's the what's the other time? Well, it depends on whether the Eagles go to the Super Bowl. Okay. So it's typically like the weekend before the Super Bowl. Hmm. But if the Eagles are in the Super Bowl, it ends up being not until March. So I get like really caveman like, would you is this a? Will you is there a luck component to you won't do it until the season is over?

The opportunity presented itself the buy week before the Super Bowl. I mean, would you consider doing it? The idea is that like it's supposed to time up with the start of the semester. So that I so that I enter class like looking good. Yeah, but it never works. Really. It never worked. What it turns into is like I end up looking like a total caveman the first day. And everyone's probably like, who is this guy? Like, you know, what kind of professional is this? And then I get the haircut like a couple of weeks in. And suddenly it's like, oh, and then do go into a haunted game. There's behind that. So I you might want to, uh, you're maybe there's an advantage to be gained by making them think that you're a caveman, but actually you have that's the, that's the thing. I think that's been working for me quite well. Yeah. Yeah. A lower expectation. And then yeah, because otherwise your professional at the beginning and you slowly turn into a caveman. Yeah. Right. And they know when they've seen the full deal, that doesn't, that doesn't really hit so hard. Graduate level thinking. Yeah. Brand how are you football starts tonight football starts tonight. Professional football. Yeah, I was going to say, well, college football is basically all these guys.

But, uh, yeah, I'm excited for NFL. Uh, to be back to me. A lot of fun. I'm excited for this game. I'm excited for tomorrow night's game as well. So, uh, yeah, let's get going. I'm excited. Let's go every night. We are ready to talk about the offense. We've been talking about it all summer. But we're going to get into the weeds today. We're going to talk about what to expect from Sean Manion. We're also going to hear from me the times later in the show today. Her expectations for this Eagle season and on Sunday against the commanders when the season opens, we got super tomorrow. We got Professor and BLG joining us on Friday. Lots of good stuff. But let's buckle down on Sean Manion. And here's where I want to start in terms of how curious we are about what this looks like. Let's say I can bring you into another room. And I'm going to put on film from the Eagles week six game. We're fast forwarding. They've figured out who they are. You know, we're through the getting to know yourself period of the first month of the season. Week six or so. This is who they, the Eagles are Sean Manion's offense.

And I got to show you a full game film. From the Eagles week six game. What is the most interesting thing that you will look? What is the thing that you will care most about in seeing how it looks like? How it looks, what it looks like. I think because I've got like my idea of what I think the run game is going to look like. I think I would want to see like the personnel grouping like like volume. Oh, okay. So like, are they leaning into more 12 personnel than maybe we even think they are? Or are they are they delving into being more 11 personnel? And they say, Hey, our best 11 on the field is with three receivers out there. Yeah, I think that might be it. Just because I feel like I know what this run game is going to look like based off what we saw in the summer. I think that would be my answer. Okay. What about you, Professor? Well, we've talked, I mean, you guys have talked. We talked before I left as well. So much about how this is actually going to be a different offense, right? And listening to you guys based on what you've seen from camp, it sounds like it really looks different right now, right?

So the main thing that I'm going to be looking at after six weeks is, is it actually different? Is it starting back or is it a little bit more of the 2024 version where they hired a professional offensive coordinator to come in and fix some of the issues with an offense that didn't go as well as they wanted in 2023? And then after six weeks, it was like, yeah, you know what? Let's not try to do some of these things and let's just kind of focus on the run game. By the way, the run game is coordinated by Jeff Statland who's been here forever. And we're going to do the same things that we've done in the past. This is a bigger change. Jeff Statland is no longer here, right? And it's one of the things we're going to talk about. But I'm very curious like under center percentage wise, play action percentage wise, and also the lack of predictability based on formation. One of the things that equals, yeah, we're most annoying at last year was like, okay, they weren't under center very much. But when they were, they pretty much always ran the ball. Like they were, they were 31st in the league at past percentage from under center. Okay.

The packers were third in the league at past percentage from under center. They were 30 seconds in past percentage and shotgun, which, which is exactly where you want to be, because that means you're, you're not predictable based on formation. Like so they're passing less out of shotgun than anyone else. And they're passing more out of under center than anyone else. If that's what Manion's bringing and that lack of predictability, then maybe where we've got something going. Yeah. Having said all that, everyone in the league seems to be trying to do this. And so is it actually going to be a packer? Is it going to be differentiating? I do love that framing because it reminds me of the 2022 season, which I've talked about before, but I, I loved that season where it was, okay, we are going to go heavy and pass on you. And we're going to be the best in the league at that. And then we're going to run out of 11 and then we're going to be the best in the league at that. And it was awesome. And it just intuitively makes so much sense to be able to do that in a similar way with, with under center and shotgun. I like that. But on your point about, it seems like the whole league is doing this.

Yeah, it's part of why Manion himself is the interesting guy here because it's not just, okay, the Eagles are going to this offense. And they can't just push an easy button and say we're going back to last year because unlike 2024, you know, there's no Kevin Poutulo here. There's no Jeff Stoutland here. It's not like they can just say, okay, let's, let's bring back the, the playbook from last year. Most of those guys are gone. So it's all new, like, you know, Josh Brasart is not going to be able to be like, okay, well, this is what Jalen like last year. Right. And Chris Cooper or Ryan Mahafi is not going to be like, okay, well, these are the things that are, I know that our offensive line can do. They sort of are pot committed with the staff. But it's all so much more about Sean Manion and putting a game plan together and sequencing plays and calling plays. Then it is, okay, can Jalen do under center play action and can Jalen throw over the middle of the field? Like, Manion is the guy. And then I think they, the, the idea of the players, you know, like they got to execute this scheme. Of course, but I like the, the fact, the fact of them, because when they first made the hire, we've talked about this a little bit.

Like when they first made it, I was like, I was a little worried that it was going to be similar to 2020. And it was going to be like this Frankenstein version of the offense. I really do feel that this is like a, a burn the boats like the situation where it's like, hey, like we are going all in on this. And there's, I don't think that they're going to back out of it. Like I, if they get to a point where, you know, things aren't going all that head coach is still here. And yeah, but I don't think that I've asked the horse. I think I think you're right. But like those are the, I mean, other than Jamal Singleton, Aaron Morehead, and what Greg Austin, the offensive line assistant. Like those are the only. I think there are tendencies I'm worried about. Like, you know, we've talked about the, you know, if they're turning the ball over too much, there's Nick then come in and say, like, okay, like we just got to, we got to run the ball and roll on our great defense. Like I'm not willing to accept this risk. I think there are things like that. Right. But in terms of the scheme itself, I find it, they don't, they don't have the things in place to just go back, right? No. I honestly, the, the way that Dane is kind of illustrated the way that the Packers had been, you know, not as predictable.

Yeah. I do feel like with how siloed we have become accustomed to this offense being that, to me, like this is, this is the opposite. I, from what we've seen and I haven't charted anything yet. I'm not watching. But like what we've seen in practice where, you know, you see them line up under center and maybe it's, you know, outside zone. Right. Okay. Well, yeah, they're going to run outside zone to the right, but then they're going to have multiple different play action concepts off of that. Sometimes where it's Jalen booting left, sometimes where it's a straight dropback, they might have screens off that. We've seen them run vertical concepts off that. So it's not just, oh, yeah, under center, run the ball shot gun, pass the ball. There's, they, to me, they have evolved to like the, what the offense looks like now in 2026 in the NFL. The importance of minion is interesting to me because I, I'm buying it right now. I am. Yeah. I agree with you. I've been encouraged by what we saw in the summer, even if it wasn't, you know, there were not a ton of explosive plays. They seemed ahead of schedule, especially given the fact that Devonte was not usually out there. Yeah. McKayleman was not usually out there. But we do have to remember the process here is that like, it's something they just were like, oh, Shawn millions are guy.

They went through a lot of interviews. There were a couple of people who reportedly they liked more at first. Like they're giving them the keys, but it's just, just let's not, let's not pretend like this was a, a fate of complete. Everybody in the league thought this guy's a new hot shot offensive coordinator is going to get hired. He goes are going a little bit down on the limb here. I think it worked for them for a series. He worked for them from Doug Peterson, same deal. I'm sure they're talking about Andy Reed in the building. Yeah. Oscar Green Bay quarterbacks coach. They hired to call plays. I mean, you know, and what they're, you know, discovering the next guy that Nick Syriani says he's that minion is likely to be calling games from the booth. The booth. And he made it sound like it was a huge thing that he gave away for. Normally he wouldn't give that away for strategic purposes because, you know, the defense is now going to know where Sean Minnie knew he would be able to give away. Give away who the backup quarterback is. Yes. For strategic purposes or how he prepares for a week one and how he's on the field. I think I saw Alabama's coach for their game last week.

Didn't want to tell, didn't want to tell reporters who the long snapper was. Let's go. We're going to keep it. We're going to keep that in. That's it. I like that. That's very fun. All right. So those are your interesting things. What else are you looking forward to seeing like on Sunday? Like are, you know, are you expecting a much higher level of motion? Are you expecting to see Jalen throwing over the field of the middle of the field much more? What is this going to be? A 75% run split. Like, you know, what worries you, I guess, maybe a better question to ask. Yeah. I don't want to jump too far into tomorrow because we're going to go. I'm like, really, you know, you're deep in our field tomorrow. But I think this is a really good draw for the Eagles this week. Yeah. Watch for weeks. Yeah. Well, that's true. Yeah. Yeah. I think that for me, we talked about how we think this offense, it might be a little bit rocky to start. So I'm not expecting like fireworks each and every way. And like, this is going to be the finished product.

So to say, like, oh, I'm expecting a lot more middle to field throws. Yeah. Sunday is tough. I'm just going to a lot. I would expect a lot of under center. A lot more than what we've come to expect. I would expect a lot of play action. Much more than we've come to expect in recent years. More, a lot more motion than what we've come to expect in recent years. Now, is it, are they going to be, you know, fifth in the NFL by the time we get to next Tuesday? Like, I don't know, but they might be like 11th, which is world's different than what we've seen in the past, which is also 11th. Funny you say that is exactly what the Packers were last year in motion. Some of the things, I think there's some perceptions that like Green Bay was extreme at everything or the Channehantry is always extreme at these things. I mean, they were 12th in under center. Okay. They were under center 37% of the time. The Eagles were 22% of the time. So that maps out to something like 10 more times a game. Like we shouldn't think that the entire offense is going to look different, right? Every team in the league is pretty much every team. I think every team last year was chopped on more than under center. Like, like, you know, like, so it's kind of like the man's own thing.

It's like, oh, man team. Well, that means they play man like 30% of the time. You know what I mean? And under center is a little bit like that too. And so the stuff that Green Bay did from shotgun is interesting to me as well. Like, because they did a lot of things that the Eagles have done well in the past. Like just looking at Green Bay foam from last year, they had like a pin pull RPO with a bubble tack to it on the backside. Like out of out of shotgun. Like they did that in the playoffs against the Bears. Like that's something the Eagles have done very well in the past. Assuming the center and the left guard can move again this year. We're going to see. They scored a nice touchdown and a playoff game on a wheeler out of empty. Well, the Eagles were really good at empty and, you know, in past years. So how much is Sean Minning going to bring those things in and, you know, incorporate them? So I'm almost as interested in seeing like, will he make the things the Eagles have done in the past? Better and more interesting, schematically, better hidden disguise, etc. As much as I'm interested in, is he going to convince this offensive line, which is never played for a different coach before?

That wide zone is the way to go and that they're going to be able to run these wide zone play action plays all the time. Because that's going to happen three or four times a game, right? Like the main fabric of the offense is still going to be, is, you know, like what is that that shotgun past game going to look like on third and eight? Like I'm very curious about that because last year it was, it was all curls on third and eight all year. So well, with that in mind, I'm curious as you went through for those of you who didn't hear this at the Ospreys. You go on full vacation mode in the summer. You come back and then you do like a limitless pill situation, except you're actually doing it. You're watching sequentially all the press conferences and listening to all the podcasts, you're downloading all the Eagles content into your brain. I'm curious if you caught yourself stopping short and breaking it into a cold sweat. When you heard Sean Manion say the thing after the first preseason game about not staying on schedule. Oh, yes. Yeah. And how much of a concern was that? That's such a serianny thing. Like I wonder if he's getting some of that stuff from the head coach and he's saying some of that stuff because he knows like that's what happens in this building.

Okay. Staying on schedule, running it on second and long to me, you know, to set up third and short, like which, you know, all the analytics, like community at this point has clearly shown is not the way to go. Yeah. Of course, I'm worried about that. I'm worried about what's going to happen when the middle of the field throws lead to interceptions. You know, you mentioned this earlier and the coach and the quarterback are both like, wait, this isn't what we do here, you know, like the only two things we did good last year. We're avoid turnovers and be good in the red zone, right? Like, and those are both kind of volatile things that you expect would regress. But when the turnovers are grass, what are they going to do? Like, are they going to react by becoming more conservative? Green Bay was 29th in the league at pass rate last year. They ran the ball a lot. The Eagles run the ball a lot. Like, so we should expect that type of conservatism from the soft fence. It's going to be built on the run game. And this is where I'm very curious, Fran, what you think about this. When I look at the run game, this is a run game that was top six in DVOA and the NFL in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.

After those four years in a row of being top six, they dropped to 24th last year. And the reaction was, let's, you know, get rid of the offensive line coach who's been here forever. Let's get a new offense coordinator and a new offensive line coach and they're going to run a completely different kind of run scheme with offensive lineman who are veterans who have never done it. The problem with the run game wasn't scheme to me as much as it was with the past game last year. The problem with the run game was the center couldn't block the one technique the whole season and the left guard couldn't move. And so they couldn't call those pin pull runs and they were more predictable that way. And the quarterback and it's less of a run thread. The quarterback stopped running exactly so like when you look at the what the issues were with the run game, I really think it was like, okay, the offensive line injuries, the unwillingness by the offensive coordinator, maybe because of those injuries to access the full menu of run plays, which were very diverse under stoutland for years, despite it being shocked and heavy. It was one of the more diverse run games in the league with incredible offensive line.

Like you said, the quarterback started running it once a game instead of four times a game by design. When we look at the reaction, I guess my question is, was it an overreaction? Like are you maybe taking up a bunch of things that were good? And now you're having them do a brand new thing and as much as Lane Johnson and Landon Dickerson can talk about how this is going to be easier and there's a lot of things about this that they like. At the same time, every time anyone asks about Chris Cooper. I don't know if you guys have mentioned that notice this. Yes, he really about Chris Cooper asked any of the players about Chris Cooper. What is the first thing they say he's played in the league. Yeah, he's played in the league. Like that's why they hired this guy. He's played in the league. A lot of guys have played in the league, right? He was an offensive line coach for the Vikings last year. Their offensive line was bad. Like do we know that he's going to be a good offensive line coach throughout the season? And it's and how much he develops the younger guys is something we're going to see over time. That doesn't matter this year. Doesn't really matter this year. How good the backups are. Hopefully it doesn't matter. So I guess my question is, did they, I don't know, what's the, well, I, the baby out with the bathroom, whatever.

That's why I'm describing intentionality when it was, you know, Jeff Stattlin's departure is not because they were unhappy with the running scheme and more because of personality dynamics and other things. But don't you think that was that happened a little bit during the season? Where they were they less they lessened his role and they wanted to do more of the under-centered go stuff and things like that. It's like they had an identity crisis mid season. Yeah. And that identity crisis was because I think more because of the injuries than because of a schematic issue. I do think that for a multiple reasons, when you talked about how siloed the offense was just holistically like in every area, they were very predictable. And it was like, all right, when they want to do this and really we talked about this a lot last year. If you it's very hard to have a good offense in the NFL when, all right, your offensive lines banged up and you're kind of limited. We didn't see them do any of like the pin pull stuff and into perimeter plays because you didn't have a center that could get out.

You didn't have a left guard to be able to get out. So you know, you had a an offensive line that was limited from a skill set standpoint because of injuries. You had the inability to play under center for all the different reasons we've talked about. The quarterback run game was not a factor. You weren't attacking the middle of the field in the past game. Like you had all these different things where it's like, all right, well, we have to play a certain way because of this reason, this reason, this reason, this reason, this reason, this reason, and then it's just you become extremely predictable. So yeah, the the run game drop off last year for me was the biggest reason why the offense struggled the way that it did. And we kind of kind of got together on that like probably around mid season where it was like, yeah, the fact that they're not be able to run the football to the clip that not even what they did last year, but even in you mentioned like they were a top six by DV away rushing attack for the five every other year under Cereani much, you know, not just the legendary year of 2024, since you couldn't be that efficient running the football that really put a magnifying glass under everything else and made it and really kind of, you know, just made everything else really hard to be able to execute.

So for me, I don't think that it was a throw the baby out of the bathroom or situation. I do I agree with Bo where it was kind of like a separate deal unfortunate deal because I've obviously just out into great coach and a great presence in the building. But I would say like the early my my belief is schematically. I'm buying into what they're I'm buying into what they're doing now we'll see like landed Dickerson what his health looks like I'm pretty concerned about that. I don't know that you're going to get a season from landed Dickerson, but Cam Jordan looks like he's healthy again. So I think that's a good sign of optimism. All right, let's hold on to that optimism, take a quick break bring that optimism to the next block in two minutes when we continue this conversation about Shawn man, it's offense what it's going to look like and then mean a time will join us in a little bit stay with us. You know that feeling the second you walk out the door. Oh, did I lock it is a dog eating the couch again are the kids actually doing homework or are they six videos deep into something they shouldn't be watching.

Back in the picture, Wago's podcast, Bo Friend, Deneuz, time now for Wawa Wednesday. We're gonna buy our friends at Wawa who else. Let's get to the super chats that we've got here before we get into the conversation about the players who are going to drive this offense. The soupies we start with Jason with a J is a hot dog sausage.

I believe by definition all hot dogs are sausage. I'm gonna say yes. Yes. It's a Frank Ferdur. It is a, yeah, it's part of the sausage family. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. You get to marry the hot dog in the sausage. Wouldn't it Frank for it this summer? Flex. What do you think? It's kind of boring. My cousin loves there. She showed us around the best she could with the limited. Do they lean into the right resources? Not really. When you go to a kind of typical sausage place, it's not like there are more Frank Ferdur. There are other kinds of sausage for Frank Ferdur or Frank Ferdur. Shout out North East Philly. I don't hang out on the Northeast that much. So I've spent more time in Frank Ferdur. What about Frank DeFord? Didn't you miss me? You know what? Yeah, exactly. I miss. I miss all Jackson in honor of the OG Eagles fan whose birthday is today.

My awesome dad. Let me just say I hope they run the damn ball for God's sake. Love that. I've met little miss run the balls down. Yeah. Yeah. At a little miss run the balls sons basketball. Happy birthday. Yeah. A little miss run the balls dad. Happy birthday to my brother. Oh, great. Maybe that's the same person. It's possible. Super chat from Dinkleberg checking in a two-part super chat. Think missed yesterday's live show. But my bold prediction for the season is that the good wins defensive player of the year with 10 receptions and three total touchdowns, putting Howie in a dark state of mind, staring out of his office window, playing the hitsingle, the one that got away by Katy Perry on repeat and seared into his brain. We'll be the haunting image of Colts, mascot blue haunting him mercilessly. Got to meet the dink at the Ospreys. I'm curious what he's going to do if the Eagles and the Gush are playing at the same time. Like is he is which one's going to be on the main screen, you know, I can't go.

Gush on the main. Oh, maybe maybe you channel flip when it's special teams. The dink is on the dink gets full screen. Then he's got to have an active finger. Not a fan. Bettingled up just assuming the Gush is going to be limited to special teams. I mean for now. What? Not a fan of blue. Colts mascot. No. See him every year at the combine. He tries so hard to be like the Philly fanatic. And it's very often. Yeah. He's the one that Jaylin was getting freaky with. Yeah. That's right. After the touchdown. Yeah. That's good. It's good call. Good for tinkle bird. Rob Milner. What percentage of snaps do you think will be in six offensive line fronts? And there's six man on the mystery. I am curious to say who the six man is. Whether it's Fred or not. Yeah. I would think even if the swing tackle isn't Fred, that the six offensive lineman would be. Just because he did it so last year, but that was a different maybe not, right? Yeah. I have a sneaky suspicion. It's really. Oh, really? Oh, really?

I really think it might be Kendall. Wow. Might be because I think Kendall is the guy who they are most sure is going to have to play this season. I think that's right too. Okay. But I think body type wise, you want it to be a tackle, right? Maybe. Oh, I mean, the williness. Normally. Because we've seen we've seen coaches lean into like those, like 280 pound. It types as like the fullback. Only big. There's a. If it's Willie has to run her out sometimes. Like, the biggest thing about it is by virtue of it being Willie, the defense is going to be on alert about. Right. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Surely they might. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. A couple of the lineman, like calling him like secret weapon. That's got my ears parked up. Okay. Fred Johnson was very outspoken about how like he can't catch the ball. Like he's like, I can't catch the ball. He's really Fred. Okay. So like, that's a limitation of using Fred is like, you know, they're not going to throw it to Fred. Maybe as much as every time you see, I would yell throw it to Fred from the stands.

Maybe, maybe that's seen playing a long game. Maybe. All right. Here's my question for you on a wow, wow Wednesday. Aside from Jalen Hertz, when Sean Manion is putting a game plan together, who are you hoping he has in mind first and foremost? Ed. Because it's going to be run heavy. Like, I'm going to take sake one out of this question as well. Oh, yeah. Because like, I mean, I think I think it's going to be a run heavy off. That's a question. Okay. I mean, the answer's sake one then. Okay. Yeah. And I think like when you watch sake one, everyone's watch sake one forever. We all know like his vision, his ability to make a cut where he starts on the front side and gets he got that's back to the A gap like backside A gap. Just three gaps over and he's running downhill. Like, those are things that happened that have happened the last two years here, even though the system wasn't necessarily designed for that to come up naturally as much. Sky should be the limit for him in this wide zone scheme, right?

Like, like that ability to like find that cut, make that cut. He says he's been watching Todd Gurley. Like, we know he's a student of the game. Like, like, all that stuff should should should be fine for that. I've enjoyed the fact that like, say, quons said that like five months ago, but that was like three days ago for Danes, we're downloading. Oh, yeah. He said it. He said it. He said it five times the last week. So I was I'm concerned. Sequoans, not the guy to worry about having said that. This rushing offense was 24th and DVOA last year with sake one. Sequoan personally was near the league bottom in success rate, whether he got the yards before contact or not last year, despite the fact that he was healthy all year, right? The offense spiraled into the identity crisis we talked about before. So all of these things like, I mean, Sireani talks all the time about fundamentals and like blocking is the important thing. In the end of the end of the day, like whether sake one can be great the way he was in 2024 is going to depend on whether the offensive line buys into the scheme, whether they're healthy and whether they're going to have the ability to access all the different kinds of plays that

this involves. You talked about how Cam and Landon couldn't move last year so they didn't call pin pulls. Why are they going to be able to run wide zone? Like you got to run for that too, right? Like and so if you can't run wide zone, like what are we doing? Like that's supposed to be what I think is built. Right. So I mean, I guess that's my like sake one thing, but that's not that's the run game, right? Like I don't think sake one's going to suddenly become a huge part of the past game. We always wish he did, but then then they'd try it and it doesn't really work or whatever. I'm not expecting him to catch a whole lot of passes other than check downs. Are you guys? I think they I think they turn a notch. Yeah. One guy a lot. Yeah. Okay. Maybe once the game we see something designed for him. Yeah. Where he does that like the Brazil play or something. Right. Because the question is I'm sorry. Yeah. You know, when do you borrow from taking sake one off the field? Right. You've talked about this because he's by far their best pass protector. Yeah. You know, against Blitz's so he's got to be on the field on third down. So what like, you know, I can tank it a couple carries on first down.

Is that fine? Yeah. Yeah. Can't play 100% of the snaps. Agree. I do think we've seen a decent amount of like design running back touches out of the backfield. Yeah. The summer where I do think we'll see a slight uptick there. So I don't know what like, you know, I don't know what the over under is. Yeah. On sequan catches this year, but I think whatever that number is, I think I might lean over. Like catches beyond the line of scrim erring. You know, more than three yards downfield. That's not a check down, right? Like, I mean, that's the thing. Like when you look at his catches last year, it was just, it wasn't just the depth. Like, even if it was, even if it happened to be eight yards deep, it was a check down on a scramble drill. You know what I mean? Like a play that's designed for him, where it's like a route combination where he's running one of the two routes in the, in the, in the first read. Like, that happened so little. Yeah. I'll last year. And it was, it was frustrating because the past game wasn't working. So now I know that you are also very aware of the tight end and what Dallas Goddard's role is going to be in this offense.

Tell us why. I think the MVP of the Packers offense last year might have been their tight end Ica craft. Like, use a huge part of that offense, watching that offense to look for clues of what Sean Manning can do gives you this like immediate like link to Dallas Goddard can do that, right? He has these skills as long as he's still healthy and can, and can run and all those things. Dallas Goddard had the highest percentage of hit routes run in NFL history last year. Data back to going back to 2000. The fact that he was used that way with like having no real ability to use his leverage, his ability to get to the sideline and get open that way, all those things was Manning, right? It was Manning throughout the season. You watch screen bay and what are they doing? The tight ends leaking to the flat on under center duo play action with a rollout from the quarter back. Dallas Goddard can certainly do that. He can certainly get open on those plays. Jalen should be able to do that as well. Green Bay did that with their tight ends all the time. The slide route on an under center play action wide zone bootleg.

Okay, there wasn't a lot of under center play action wide zone bootleg, but Dallas Goddard certainly ran the slide route all the time out of those RPOs, right? So that's something we can do. Can he fake like he's a front slide blocker on wide zone and keep running and turn it into a vertical route? Absolutely. These are all things that happened. Simple out routes. Green Bay ran more out routes than any other team in the NFL last year. And when you look at the breakdown, it was the tight ends running those routes. And we've seen Dallas Goddard have success on those routes, whether it's like a three level stretch where he's running that sail route, whether he's just running a simple out in a like a two man combination, whatever it is, we've seen him look good in those. And when you look at the shotgun pure pass game third and long for the Packers, Tucker Kraft got so many deep passes just running down the seam against zone coverage where the zone was spread by a running back who was running a wheel, maybe another tight end or a wide receiver running a post from the same side like spreading out the spreading the zones then and creating open areas in the middle of the field. Dallas Goddard can do all of this. The question is can everybody else do it right? Can the quarterback do it?

Can they can they get the place called in the right sequencing to fool the defenses and so on? I think Dallas Goddard can be awesome. Having said that if Dallas Goddard gets hurt, Johnny months the next guy up. EJ Jenkins is the next guy up. I hope Zach Hertz is on speed dial. Yeah, I mean, this is why I have felt that he is. No, it's to me like Dallas Goddard is the probably the most important like like Fulcrum player for this offense. Yeah. In terms of like determining whether or not it reaches its upside overall as a unit. I think when you look at his impact in the run game and in the past game, and look, this this this was an offense that was number one on the NFL last year and three and outrate. Dana is those like you're pulling your hair. Historically historically. Yeah. And when you have those three and outs, it really dismantles like what you're trying to do. Like any kind of flow and rhythm you get into as a play collar and as a quarterback. You're not running the football well and that's leading to it. Getting into like the staying on schedule aspect of things like you just you lose all sense of rhythm.

And if they're able to run the ball, I think Dallas is going to be a big part of that. And if they're able to run the now the play action element and the being able to disguise and use them all those different kinds of routes. Those misdirection elements, whether it's the the slide routes and like there's those play action boots and all that like if they can run the ball and if Dallas is a big part of that. Yeah. I think you could have a huge huge season. Do you think the main purpose of Johnny Mont is have him be the blocking guy. Reup Dallas less wear and tear running more routes. Maybe being detached from the formation a little bit more. Packers ran a lot of 12 personnel. I think there were fifth or sixth in the league at 12 personnel. Have them both on the field and have it so that Dallas isn't asked to block as much. We saw his blocking go down a step or two last year. Do you think that's part of the thinking? Well, Green Bay's 12 personnel was craft and musk grape. And musk grape is the pass catcher. He's not the he's not an inline guy really at all. You know, they were still able to lean into craft in 12 personnel with him being that tool threat type of player at the position.

Uh, yeah, potentially. But that's why I say answer both the both questions very top. Like the personnel identity of this team. I think is one of the more interesting facets as we get into this is like, what, what do they feel is their best 11 more often than not by time we get to October. I think that's that's really interesting. Yeah, it's on my mind that as we talk about the all of the different offenses looking a little samey and coming from the same tree and everybody's trying to be heavy. I don't know. Maybe 11 is where they should live. I mean, that's nice. It's nice that they've got Johnny Munt. But if McCoy lemon is like close to being on schedule, getting him and Wix out on the field together, I don't know. I think that they've got six receivers on the roster. Maybe that's where they're leaning that that would require. Those guys really got it being awesome as a blocker. Like got it returning to form there. And those receivers also getting after it. Yeah, it's a really make sure that you're keeping defensive. Do a run out of 11 mean that you're going to have to have a receiver who can block.

McCoy lemon. I'm sorry. I got a lot of having Wix. Yeah, last year that was there. It's one thing that they think lemon can do. He's he showed that at USC. Yeah. We'll see if he does here. And maybe it's sometimes it's 11 with with months on the field. Yeah. And that's how you're borrowing. Right. And you're also maybe keeping Goddard fresh that way. I don't know. They have been doing that with Goddard the last two years. Like he has not always been the guy out there. Yeah. All right. Close the book on Wawa Wednesday. Take our next break on the other side. We are very pleased to be joined by the great Meena Kimes, the BSPN and the Meena Kimes podcast featuring Lenny Meena. How are you? Thank you for joining us. Happy season. Hello. Excited to be here. Excited to talk about an actual matchup. Yes. Let's do that. But first, I do want to just get you on the record for the people who may not have known what are your like like open-ended predictions for this Eagle season. How do you think

things are going to play out in the big picture? I have to refer back to my NFC East preview pod. Folks go check that out. Meena Kimes with featuring Lenny. I did have Eagles winning the division. Now I did take the Cowboys in my team draft as like a and it was honestly like a desperation. Hi variants. Sure. That I immediately regretted. We're all about game theory here. That's totally fine. I am riding with Philadelphia. I also think the Eagles are a team that's probably going to look better in the second half of the season than the first. Something we talked about in my last pod. So that is something I'm also watching for because I think this is the offense that probably won't hit it stride until midway through the season. I think that's totally reasonable. It is a it is a difficult thing for us having this show every day to accept that we're probably going to need to preach patience. And I don't know that we'll be able to follow that. But it's something that we're at least trying to keep in mind as there is this huge offensive overhaul.

And I'm curious how you feel about the idea of okay, you've got Sean Manion here, Declan Doyle, all these all these new young offensive coordinators and there's a little bit of sameness to the offenses that they're all bringing. Is there any chance you feel like that? Maybe this is like too late on the wave of moving the offense in this direction? It's a good question. I think more so than defensive trends like adjusting and responding to that. It's less about the timing of the switch and more whether or not it fits the personnel. I think that's what I want to see with Philadelphia. And it's it's funny with the Ravens. I feel the quarterback and some of the skill players it maps on pretty well. The commanders, I have a lot of skepticism about the Eagles are kind of in the middle where I have actually been a little bit apprehensive of coming down saying this is going to be amazing for the offense or this is going to be a terrible fifth or Jalen hurts. They're the team where I almost I've been

reluctant to plant my flag too much either way because I just kind of want to see it. I want to see how it plays out. I want to see I was with the run game looks like that's something I'm really curious about week one even more so you know so much dialogue around the quarterback and my kind lemon and all of that. But I'm really interested in seeing if this team looks better running the football than they did last year because I think that was kind of lost in all of the concern around the quarterback and the offense in general was just that the offensive line didn't look dominant and that's something I really want to see week one because I feel like even if there's some an adjustment period in the passing game and I think there's going to be if the run game can improve upon what we saw last season which was pretty bad. I think that'll stabilize it obviously along with the elite defense. And I think the if we believe what they have told us the offensive line feels much better about this game and their their ability to execute it in the running game not with standing also just they feel much healthier guys like Landon Dickerson and

Kim Jürgen. So we will we will see how that plays out. The other thing that is on my mind is just it's this scheme but it's also so dependent on the guy. And I think the Eagles would tell you that they're betting more on Sean Manion the coach and the person than they are the scheme itself. We'll see how that plays out but it's also like in terms of the patience. This guy's never done before. He's never called plays before. He's never been in charge of a game plan. So I guess I guess we can start there as you look at this commander's defense and turn our attention to Sunday. If you were Sean Manion, where would you start in trying to get them in conflict and to take advantage of whatever it is their weaknesses are. Yeah, this is also a little tricky because they've got a new play caller. And I think there's a lot of unknowns around what Duran Tejones is going to bring to this defense. Something I brought up on my pod this morning looking at the matchup is Jalen Hertz shredded the Vikings last night. I kind of yeah, I was I have perfect pass erading best. Yeah, yeah, unbelievable. He bombed them, right? And it's interesting because I think

what we think of Brian Florida's defense and obviously they're excellent. We also think about some of the things that they do the simulated pressures with zone coverage behind it. The high rates of blitzing on early downs, the unexpected nature of those blitzes. And those are things that in the past hurts at times in his career has struggled with, but he did not struggle in that game. So as you spin it forward to this matchup and you think about what Duran Tejones might bring from a schematic perspective, I do think Eagles fans should take some comfort in how good Jalen Hertz in particular was against that defense, which was more talented. Last season. Now the commanders undeniably do have some upgrades at the line of scrimmage in particular. Daufeuwe. I think the defensive line front seven should be improved, but I think there I think there's still a lot of vulnerabilities on the back end. The entire secondary places where Philadelphia has a matchup advantage. I think Devante Smith in this game. I don't think there's a corner on the commanders roster who I like in that matchup. So this is one where I know I talked about the run

game and I do want to see that, but it does feel like the Eagles receivers against the commanders DBs is probably their best matchup advantage in this game. And you would know this better than I would, but am I right that let the the sunny styles preseason experience was a little bit disheartening for commanders fans and I'm just thinking of it in terms of, okay, let's test out the marriage of the run in the past and how much conflict can we actually put linebackers in? Well, can we do it against a rookie linebacker week one that seems like it should be a relatively simple task? You should do that regardless of how his preseason went. I think the adjustment period for linebackers going to the NFL is always really tricky. We talked about that with Campbell. It's it's tough, man. And I will say like I think the style some of the preseason stuff was a little bit overblown. Some of the clips that I saw of him like not making an impact were not it was not I would not put on him necessarily. And this is always some of the you know, this can be a tricky thing sometimes with linebacker play if it's not their responsibility.

But yeah, I would absolutely test that out. Both in the run and the past and like you said, run past conflict, I definitely would love to see, you know, a decent RPO component this week as well. I know that the thought is that this offense is going to be more under center, under center play action and all that. You definitely want that component. But I really do think in general, there's also some of those ego staples that would be advantageous with this particular matchup. And that's kind of the balance right like with all of these new play callers is like you want the new offense, you want to lean into it, you want to get rep it and also with, you know, if you're going to an offense that is more about under center play action, you have to sequence it over the course of an entire game and it has to be like a commitment to it. But there are also things that you do well, they get quarterbacked as well. So it's kind of finding that balance, I think, with this matchup of like those two worlds. Yeah, Josh Krizar was talking about this,

the past game coordinator last week about like they don't know what Jalen's comfort calls are. Yeah, you know, they think they do and Jalen can tell them what it is he thinks they like, but they haven't run these things live. So, you know, again, preaching patience, we this team, they don't even know who they are yet. And they won't know that for, you know, a month at least. They do know they have an elite defense. And that's kind of what you feel good about here. What a pro tease. Let's talk about that side of the ball. Yeah, well, it made it easier. I mean, because we were talking about when we previewed this game, we are focused on the offense versus the defense, the Eagles offense. Because the other side of the ball, I just think Phil Delphiha has such a clear advantage, especially with the commander's state of their offensive line. And, you know, some of the injuries and issues that they've had this off season, I think it's going to be really challenging for them, even with no Jonathan Grenard and whatnot. I just think this Eagles defense and this Eagles defensive front is going to be really stifling. Where are you with Jane Daniels at the moment?

So they're kind of the flip side of what I was, you know, the we were talking about the Eagles offense. They're doing the same thing to something degree, right? And it's funny because you and I were talking, we were just talking about how like, is Eagles offense? Are they going to stick with the new offense? Are they going to lean back on their comfort? I think the commander is a one where I'm watching very closely to see what their level of commitment is to the schematic shift. Because I think there's a world in which it really, really struggled with it early on, given, again, not just some of the injuries, but also the quarterback, the things that he's good at, the way that they've played in the past, the fact that their play collar has been on their staff with Cliff King's Burry running the old offense. Yeah. It makes it a little bit more of a convoluted picture in my mind than Philadelphia going out and bringing an actual outside voice from the offense that they want to replicate more. So I, you know, they're going to try it similar to Philadelphia. This is like a fascinating game for that reason, but they've got a much

harder opponent, I think, and I just, I don't know, I think the command, I do like the receivers that they've added. I think like putting together a group with McLaren digs and Antonio Williams makes sense. I just don't know when you look at this Philadelphia roster, where they're going to attack. I mean, the safeties, I guess, but I'm not sure they're equipped to do that. Yeah, I don't disagree. And so are we, are we hearing a prediction of an Eagles win going one to know? We are predicting an Eagles win this week. And like I said, I just, you know, I keep going back to this with Philadelphia, the defense sets a floor for every game. Yeah. That allows the offense to catch up. And maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the offense is going to come out. And like I said, I think I have a skepticism about the commander's defense. Maybe they look awesome week one. Maybe everybody's like, what are you talking about, a Justin period, we're already cooking. I just think, you know, against certain opponents, it might be a little bit up and down at first and then really hit

it stride mid season, but that the defense bolsters it. I think that's totally reasonable. It can be, it can be, you know, game plan dependent kind of on offense with this Eagles defense. I know you're going to get to watch your Seahawks tonight. Do you have the Eagles defense at sort of the upper echelon in a top two, three defense and league in terms of what you're expecting? I did a top 10 defenses pod. I believe I had them force. It's, I think it's a very clear top five in the NFL right now in whatever order you choose, Houston, Seattle, LA, Philadelphia, and Denver. Yeah. And then there's a pretty significant drop-off after that in my mind. I will say this about Seattle. I had them second behind Houston. They are extremely injured on the back end. Yeah. And so I think there might be some overreactions tonight. They, I could be wrong. Maybe the pressure plan is so great like it was in the Super Bowl that it doesn't matter, but I would caution anyone against drawing two significant conclusions about the Seahawks past defense because they are literally like, how about the Eagles

at safety? They have an embarrassment of riches compared to Seattle right now. So that could be an issue for them. Can I give you my Mike McDonald take from watching Cardinocs? Give it to me. I thought it was great. Like I really loved watching him seem like a really mature leader of men. I've always been a big Mike McDonald fan. The thing that concerns me is for an NFL coach. He seems to love his family maybe too much. Mmm. Love is his family too much. You know what? That's like, you know, is this guy? Is he going to follow in the footsteps of the guys who spend, you know, 22 hours in the office and don't want to see their families? I think he kind of does that to some degree. Despite loving his family a lot. I will say this. I was in Seattle. So he had his son not super long after mine. Okay. And his wife is pregnant with another kid right now. His wife is like awesome like Tammy Taylor type. Yeah. Super great personality. I don't know how much of her they showed in Hard Knocks actually. I only watched the

first couple, but she's awesome. His son, it was born. I want to say like a year, he's a little less than a year. He's younger than my son. My son is just about to turn three and his son is like two and a little bit. He is an absolute unit. Like he was walking around the field. I could not believe he was a year. He is an enormous two year old. Um, and like the kid was just like stomping around. I was like, Oh my God. Like what a what a gigantic son you have. So maybe he's already thinking about him play football. Maybe maybe how he was already trying to stockpile 20, 45. That will let him build. I'm telling you, this is a son. He's a little bowling ball. All right. Last thing. I mean, start of the football season. How does like kind of your life change? Are we are we excited about the predictability of a weekly schedule? What what is the role over here for you? Yes. So we're on site for a Monday night football every week with NFL live. And then

You had a non football thing you wanted to. Oh yeah. I'm going to be quick about this. Where are you guys at with your kids when it comes to like circle of life moments with like nature and you know, you're out walking outside. Touching grass. Splendid a little bit more.

Yeah, yeah. We're like you see another animal. You know, like I remember when Francis was like little, like I was like, oh look, look at this little chipmunk. Frilking front yard and a cat from across the street came running and just scooped it up. Like, yeah, you like lean it like, hey, like that's how goes already. Like kind of like, oh, like it'll be okay. Like I'm sure they're just, you know, like, oh, I think that would be more. Yeah, this is what I think I know we're both you land on that spot. Yeah, I forgot to ask. Yeah, I think more just telling the truth. Right. Yeah. Well, so this morning, we're getting ready for some. We walk out and Francis just goes and like points to the driveway and there's this little like looks like a baby. It was like some kind of like a, I think it was like a bowl like the thing. Like a like a mold that like goes, you know, dicks to the garden and stuff. Yeah, with a V. Yep. And it was a baby and it was like barely breathing. Francis, a new it was breathing. I can cheek. Yeah, well, it was like bleat and looked like it's something. It looked like something had picked it up to eat it and like left it there. So it's just like laying in the middle of my driveway. And so I'm like, all right, like let's go,

like, you know, I go and I get like a shovel to scoop it up and like, like we go put in the like in the bushes. Um, we're like, yeah, like it's my, it's how you like, I'm starting like get it on the thing and it starts like squeaking and like, big noise. I'm like, oh, man, this is brutal. And uh, so I'm like, yeah, like, you know, maybe it's mom or dad will come back and get it or like, you know, maybe a predator will come with like one of the two things going to happen. You know, like, it's then he's good with it. We're fine. It was a rough start to the day. I come back. I'm getting ready to come here. The things back in my driveway. It's like, I'll give this thing lots of credit. This could be like a Nick Sireani, like, sign a resiliency, like someone chat GBT. This thing was fighting. Uh, gets back in the middle of the driveway. And I'm like, dude, like here, you're, you got no shot out here. Like, so I get it back. I go back into the shed. I get a shovel again. I put it to a different spot. I don't know. We'll see if this thing is going to make it through or not. I didn't know what to do with this thing. I thought you were going to just run it over. No, I felt bad in the mall. I was like, you know,

this poor thing. It was, yeah, it was bad luck. Good for it for the vol. Yeah. No. Ben Vollen. Chad Ben Vollen. Animal stuff. It's possible. Oh, yeah. Animal stuff can be hard. I mean, we spent a lot of time in Ireland and Iceland looking at all these cute sheep and lambs. Meanwhile, you eat dinner, like, the number one thing on the menu is lamb. But like, it's like, and, you know, and everyone's like, so the lamb's the baby, right? But yeah, lambs the baby. They taste better. You know, like, it's just, it's kind of, it's what's what's what's what's what's what's what's what's what's what's what's what else tastes better? Over to. All right. Anything else that you'd like to get to on the offense with that big old computer review. Let's let's save it for Friday. I think, yeah, I'll be back Friday and we can, we can talk about the details and anything for you. I, I, I've said numerous times, I'll say it one last time before like, it's a pencil down

the type of thing. I'm pretty optimistic about the offense over to me too. I've got, I've got, it's good vibes. I think for the, you know what I was thinking about as we were talking about this is I am, I am more worried about just a straight shotgun dropback game than I am sure them incorporating the under center stuff. Yeah, that's, that's where the scheme was the problem. Like, that's where Manion acts actually has to make an impact in my opinion. And that's where I talk about it as if he's a person where I think they've struggled more this summer. Okay. Is is winning in those situations. And the straight-hands of Devonte for a lot of those. Yes. And, and this training camp with this awesome defense against them. Maybe, maybe the reason. Yeah, maybe. Yeah. Yeah. I'm leaving some space for what if the Eagles are really right about Taywicks. You know, what do you write? What would really write about Taywicks look like? 750 yards. Okay. A bona fide number two. Yeah, this is like, maybe the like, you know,

someone who doesn't follow the team is closely, but follows it closely enough to know the big things. Like my mom is a good example. My mom asked me like, what did the Eagles do to replace AJ Brown? And the short answer is like, they didn't really, right? Like, they didn't try to, I mean, they tried, but like they drafted, they drafted a guy in the round. Two round picks. Well, they did more on the second round pick on on Friday. I have a whole thing about that. But, but the, the first round pick, due to injury or whatever, like we have no idea what, what he's going to be doing, right? Like, and Taywicks is a guy who you've made this point. The Packers kept it kept. Yeah. They chose not to, right? And so, you know, like, like, is he going to be a bona fide number two? Because he never has been. Right. Right? So okay. All right. Good stuff today. Thanks to everybody for joining. Let us know in the comments, what you're most excited to see from Sean Manion. Thank you, Lindsay. Coming in on what if otherwise been a day off?
