by Marilynn Chadwick
I'm convinced the tone I set in our home by honoring David inspired our children to honor him and each other. It feels good to get respect. To be honored. But it also feels incredibly good to honor someone else. We find that as we give honor, we get it back.
But giving honor, especially in a world which has largely forgotten this concept, doesn't come easily. It takes practice. I've learned that home is a wonderful laboratory for cultivating honor. My hope is that the culture of honor we create will spill over into the culture around us.
I believe our world today is thirsty for honor, as evidenced by a conversation I had some years ago. "I don't enjoy going to lunch with my work friends anymore," my young friend confided over coffee. "The conversation always turns into husband bashing," she added. Her own marriage wasn't perfect, she admitted. "I'm a very transparent person," she smiled. "So I try to be real. But I don't want to dishonor my husband. And I want my friends to know I truly love being married to him."
As we talked, she came to the conclusion that it was okay for her to be honest with her friends about some of her own marriage struggles. She could share a few of the positive ways she and her husband have discovered to work through their issues. But she resolved to do this in a manner that would honor both Christ and her husband.
I loved my friend's heart for her husband and for the Lord. I felt sure she would be a winsome witness to her friends about what it means to have a godly marriage. And more importantly, what it means to follow Christ.
That conversation was just one of many I had with women of all ages while writing Eight Great Ways to Honor Your Husband. Even today, I still yearn to help wives reclaim the lost art of honoring their husbands.
Perhaps it's time to take a fresh look at this age-old virtue. We can start by honoring God. "Those who honor me, I will honor" (1 Samuel 2:30). Then, let's explore practical ways to honor our husbands. Remember, the world is watching us. And deep down, I believe they're thirsty for honor—especially honor in marriage.

Welcome to your moment of hope. I'm Jen Houston joined by pastor David and Marilyn Chadwick. We're going to wrap up our series that we've been calling for two weeks now how to honor your husband. Marilyn you have written this series and today we're going to close out with creating a culture of honor because at the end of the day Jen I really hope that that might be something that would come across out of these blogs and podcasts that we're for what two more weeks right next week we'll start with your version. I'll try to take a whacket telling husbands how to honor their wives and hopefully it will be fair balance. Take a whacket I love that. Well I'm I'm I'm a backup and just say I'm convinced that the tone that I set in our home and especially when the kids were growing up by honoring David inspired our children to honor him but also each other you know it just feels good to get respect to be honored but it also feels incredibly good to honor somebody else and Jen you've said this again and again and it's worth repeating we find that as we give honor
we get it back but giving honor especially in a world which has largely forgotten this concept does it come easily it takes practice and our home is a wonderful laboratory for cultivating honor and my hope again I'll say it and I'll keep saying this my hope is that the culture of honor that we create will spill over into the culture around us. I believe today's world is really thirsty for honor as evidenced by a conversation I had some years ago and this was from a young friend and when she said it to me it kind of made my blood turn cold a little bit she said this she said I don't enjoy going to lunch with my work friends anymore she confided over coffee the conversation she said always turns to husband bashing then she said her she she admitted that her own marriage wasn't perfect and she said I'm a very transparent person and then she smiled so I try to be real but I don't want to dishonor my husband and I want my friends to know I truly love being married
to him and this is even before I wrote the book on honor and as we talked she came to the conclusion that it was okay for her to be honest with her friends about some of her own marriage struggles she could share a few of the positive ways she and her husband have discovered to work through their issues but she would resolve to do this and this is key in a manner that would honor both Christ and her husband you know I loved her heart both for the Lord and for her husband and I felt sure after that conversation that she would be a wend some witness to her friends about what it means to have a godly marriage and more importantly what it means to follow Christ but you know as I thought back on it this is just one of many conversations I've had over the last few years with women of all ages while we were writing our books together David but even then today I still yearn to help wives reclaim what I think is a lost art of honoring their husbands and I think we can all do well to take a fresh look at this age overt you Jen I don't know about you you're sort of several
years behind me but do you think this husband bashing is something that you ever come across in your world you know unfortunately when Chris and I were early married we had a group of friends we did a small group together with and there was one couple in particular it was very hard very toxic and we realized that it was creeping into our marriage and this bashing and it was like sarcastic you know it kind of starts as like a little sarcastic dig and then we took a time and had a conversation just in private about it and we said we're going to determine not to do this in fact we're going to come in the opposite and let's start building each other up around this couple and come in that opposite spirit unfortunately that couple ended up divorcing it just got so terrible toxic and so it's worth the fight to combat this in the opposite spirit to honor one another and to build each other up well I really believe that the air that we breathe gives health to our human bodies I believe that the air of words around us give health to our souls and so I would encourage everyone out there
to create an environment where honor is breathed through your life in your home in your body that will make your soul healthier and make your family healthier as well probably in our churches in our communities just in the world around us Jen if we do what you were saying I wonder if it will be a ripple effect I'd like to think so I'd like to think so too and I want to visit what you just said too earlier I saw something on social media recently that said authenticity is not the same as oversharing you can be honest without giving everyone access to your life meaning the struggles and such so we can still be authentic without having to bash and reveal all those intimate places so he spent two weeks with wives giving insights to other wives on how to honor your husbands next week for two weeks you guys it's our turn of the plate and I'll try to talk to your hearts with Jenna Maryland as well on how to honor your wives when both those things work between husbands and wives you've got an honorable home that will most likely produce honorable kids and
honorable grandkids and might just begin to tip our culture toward being a place where honor is found unique
