How to Honor Your Husband: The Training Wheels of Honor

0:00Welcome to your moment of hope I'm Jen Houston joined by pastor David and Marilyn Chadwick we're continuing in our series that we've been calling how to honor your husband. Marilyn you share with us today about the training wheels of honor. Jen you know I think you and David would agree with me that honor even though we've been talking about it for almost two weeks is really not a subject that you hear much about these days. If anything we've been much more accustomed and I would say social media you know is this on steroids but we've been much more accustomed to disrespect and dishonor. We all know that urban slang for disrespect or diss which made its way a while back you know into everyday language. I don't even know if people still say what it means to be dist but everybody knows what disrespect is. So let's flip it back around and remind ourselves what honor means honor simply put means to treat somebody with respect or admiration and it has to do with qualities like honesty integrity or dignity but the biblical version of honor is much way tear. Even

1:04lofty it speaks to the precious worth of the person being honored and it's related and it's original languages in the Hebrew it's related to words like glory or worship or prize and I think if we're honest most of us deep down inside you're going to be treated with respect but we benefit not only from receiving honor but also forgiving it to others. God said the bar so low when it comes to honor that even a child can show honor to his or her parents honor your father and mother was the first commandment with a promise and it followed with these words so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy get this a long life on the earth you might call this the training wheels of honor David even children can do this. Anyone can and at our church moments of church we will occasionally take a moment to honor medical professions and we'll

2:04have them stay in and everybody will give them an abhorious applause. The one that gets the biggest applause is when we honor military veterans or police officers and then the place that gives standing ovation but I think if we just give people that picture of the way you honor somebody is by giving them an applause you know telling them how much you think they're valuable and what they do and especially give a standing ovation and that makes the person feel honored I think that's a practical suggestion. You know it's really easy as you're mentioning these people that we honor and it's easy to honor them because they serve they pour out their lives they honor other people kind of what we said about a week ago is if you desire to be honored don't demand it just be honorable and that culture will follow you. Well when children honor their earthly parents and again it's the only commandment with the first one that has a real strong promise and David they're more words about this than almost any of the other 10 commandments except for I think the Sabbath but when children

3:05honor their earthly parents they begin to grasp I think this is why it's so important they begin to grasp what it means to honor their heavenly father so I would say maybe it's time I'm fact I know it's time to recapture this age old virtue so we can start by honoring God but let's do so with a sense of expectancy for God himself makes this bold promise those who honor me this is first Samuel 2 verse 30 those who honor me I will honor. I love that song that was really famous a number years ago called Ancient of Days we actually went to a rally recently that was geared toward more college students but they started out with that song because it's such a great song but it's called Ancient of Days but it begins with blessing and honor glory and power be into the Ancient of Days that word honors is the word that we're supposed to give to God well then how much more in honoring him would we honor that which he loves the most and that is the crown of his creation you and me humanity.
