Jets at Titans Week 1 Final Preview

And we get the air back and see how they're hard work, pay off. And we all get a chance to express ourselves the ways that we know how to on the football field. Coastal, the lessons be us, we're on the field, we're in between those lines. And it's something that I've been looking forward to for a little while now. 1:05today. How you doing, Justin? Well, of course I'm doing well doing well because we're closer to the Titans officially kicking off their 20-26 season. Sunday against the New York Jets week one at Nissan Stadium. I'm pumped up. Like we said yesterday, we heard from Cam Ward. We heard from Robert Salah. We heard from a bunch of guys in the locker room. The locker room was open essentially from one of the first times. The reporters were in there asking good questions. I am excited to, I'm excited for Sunday. I'm pumped up. I'm not going to let anything, including Dan Hansis, ruin the excitement that I have for the Titans in week one. Are you going to let my fuzzy internet connection ruin your excitement? Sorry, we'll just push through it. We are live here this morning because I have a crazy day. We figured we'll just do our final preview live here. Welcome in, audible army members. 2:08some interesting stuff that we can use to sort of frame our discussion today. Justin and I want to start where we always start because we are the unofficial Cam Ward podcast here on the music city, audible with Cam Ward, who I have a number of questions from not just the one we just played at the top of the show, but let's start here, Justin. Cam Ward has a chance to go out, get a win, first chance to start 1-0. He mentioned that at the podium, so your only chance to start 1-0. And I think one of the keys for him in this game is to be a game manager. Protect the football, play on time, play on schedule. And he talked about that, to run to have him put with a great question asking him, what do you think about what are your thoughts on being a game manager? You have to be a game manager for at least 60 to 70% of the time. You got to be able to play on time with the dash, hitting the deep route, hitting the intermediate game, or taking a check now, all of it plays a factor into playing in the green, playing in, you know, and what we call our domain where we can write anything

3:12we want. We don't have to be passive or true run heavy. And it's going to be able to help us be successful. That's what's going to be to help me be successful. And the game manager part is a big reason of, it's a big part of every quarterback's job because, you know, they have to continue to, you know, take what the defense gives them and not try to live for the big play. That's something that I've grown and gotten better at. And it's something that you know, I'm going to continue to, you know, strive for the better. We'll see if he's really grown and gotten better at it on Sunday, Justin. Yeah, I'm fascinated by this, right? We know enough, we think we do. We haven't seen it yet in Tennessee, but we think we know enough about this Brian Dable offense to say he wants cam ward. Oh, there, oh, there you go. He wants cam ward to get the ball out of his hands quickly. He wants to be efficient. He wants the quarterback to play on time. He wants to stay ahead of the sticks. You know, meaning they want to take those short completions, take the check downs, get into second and four, get into second and third, and all those things.

4:13We know that that's what they want cam ward to do based on what they've said all off season based on a lot of the reports that have come out of camp on how the offense has looked, but we also know that cam ward sometimes can't help himself and loves to go big play hunting. How do you strike that bounce? That's what I want to see because obviously, you know, that quote from cam, some of you were joking, it's coached up or whatever. It's clear that like the Brian Dable offense, of course, and has had an impact on what he's saying, what he claims is going to be his mindset and his approach, but you've also heard, you also heard, excuse me, Brian Dable say things like, well, we don't want to change our players and you know, square peg, round hole, all that stuff. What is the line? How do you walk it for cam ward where he tries to do a better job taking the check downs, being efficient, what the defense gives him, all that, you know, all those busy words we keep hearing, but you also don't mute, you know, his ability. Make a way or, you know, put a leash on his ability, neuter, neuter, his ability to

5:19go big play hunting to make plays off script, to roll to his right, to roll to his left and find these off script. Fascinated is the word for me because how does this marriage, how does those two things coexist when they're not exactly, you know, alike, if you will? Well, funny you mentioned that, Justin, I didn't know how we were going into this, but you've created a perfect segue there. That's the relationship, this budding new relationship between quarterback and play collar, Brian Dable and cam ward. I did that a little backwards, but you know what my point is, cam was asked bluntly, told you seem more comfortable and confident this year and asked, what's the reason for that? And see if you catch the not so subtle shot at Brian Callahan staff with this answer. I think the building, they've allowed me to, you know, be myself from upstairs, downstairs, the new system that we're in is more of my style because today's has a big part of that. I think the entire offensive and defense of staff, they don't, you know, try to change

6:22the person or anything that you want you to be yourself and, you know, they try to, you know, continuously motivate you and get you ways that's going to help you and the team, but in the day, I think the best thing about, you know, us as our building, that, you know, we see, you know, the true and people and, you know, what we all want to do to win. I think the telling part there is this system fits me way better. Like Brian Callahan came in and said, I'm going to build a system that fits this guy. And this system fits in way better. Before you respond, funny note in that clip, some sort of tractor being started, we've been having an ongoing inside joke discussion in the MCI discord about all the sounds that happen in the background of Titans training camp press conferences and practice pressers. There's a lot going on. They're building a new stadium. They're taking care of that grass at the practice field and all that. You can't help it. Listen, I'll be blown with you. I think Cam sometimes just talks because he has to, right? Like, they're not trying, they don't want to change you. I get all that. I'm not saying they're trying to change him.

7:23But at the same time, here we are talking about him playing a different style of quarterback. He's time out being a game manager. Has Cam more ever struck you about being a game or as being a game manager and not, you know, take it with the defense gives him as opposed to extending plays and getting outside of the pocket. So I think sometimes he just talks. Yeah. I think that's fair. But I also wonder, okay, maybe that was a little more subtle and then maybe he's just talking. You want a real shot at Callahan and his staff. Here's another clip from Camward talking about how prepared they feel. The title of this episode, Justin, the Titans are prepared to win this game. At least they're more prepared for this week one game than they've been for any game in the last two years. I think more prepared early in the week that Coach Daze and Coach Shade has held me with, you know, already knowing, you know, the idea of what we have going to the game, what we think they're going to run. You also got to be, you know, you got to be able to see stuff post-nap because this week

8:23one they can do any type of blitz, any type of covers they want. So I think we're very prepared. So I think we're ready to set the challenge. I mean, maybe I'm reading too much into it, but actually knowing the game plan going into the week more prepared than we have it, like that sounds like a pretty thinly veiled shot at Callahan. Well, I have no doubt that Robert Salah and staff are better than Brian, Callahan and staff. I do think you're probably reading a bit too much into it, but do I think they are better prepared probably than any game they ever were under Brian Callahan? Yeah, probably because I think Robert Salah and Brian Dable, even Gus Bradley, you know, Ben NFL head coach, I think these guys are, yeah, they're probably a lot better at what they do than Brian Callahan and his first time offensive coordinator who was really a latsky offensive coordinator and a defensive coordinator who was a first year defensive coordinator in his first season. So yeah, I certainly think this staff has, has these players better prepared than the

9:29previous one ever did. Yeah, and that's going to be a big part of this. The Jets have a brand new looking defense talked about yesterday, added a lot of pieces, former Titans, you know, it's a vanderson at Jarvis Brownlee added during the middle of last season and ballhawls. Brownlee in the middle last season sweat this off season. Right. And ballhawls like Minkovitz Patrick added and they're trying to change the culture. Robert Salah talked about that in his presser that like I'm sure they've been harping on takeaways nonstop there, given what happened last year. And so that's going to be a big part of this game is protect the football. We've talked about this not too long ago on the show week one wins and losses more than any other week in the NFL are determined by turnovers in terms of the correlation there. So of course every NFL game you usually find a turn of her correlation to wins and losses, but it's it's strongest in week one when teams are sort of just trying to feel out who they are, what their identity is going to be for the season. Not necessarily always as aggressive. And so yeah, I think that the Titans just need to protect the football, try to get points

10:29when they can take the field goals. You don't have to go for every fourth down in this game. Like I do think we're going to see maybe a more conservative approach this week than we might see later on in the season. And I want Cam to be the same way like I'd rather he just take the check downs, take the easy completions and get the the team in short third and law third down and distance situations rather than try to attack this supposedly weak secondary. Although at the same time I do think that's one of the areas that Titans have an advantage is their wide receivers against the Jets defensive backs. Yeah, I've said it. I'll be blunt. And if I end up looking stupid, I end up looking stupid. I think this Jets corner back room is below average. I think it's worse than the Titans. Their number one corner is like a veteran, maybe not journeyman, but Brandon Stevens who's on a very modest contract. A lot less than what Cordell Flott and Alante Taylor are making or a little bit less than Flott. I think if you looked around the league, you know, Stevens is their CB one.

11:30I think he's a below average CB two on most teams in the NFL. And their other starting corner is going to be Azirai Thomas who's a sophomore who didn't really play last year and was considered really, really raw. Like it's going to hold, you know, you got to try to expose that get Carl L. Tate lined up opposite. I mean, even Calvin Ridley, you know, Eric I'm getting these guys lined up opposite Azirai Thomas and seriously test him in coverage. They got Naish on right. They brought in like to compete for playing time outside. He had five interceptions last year in like a rotational role, pretty random stat that I probably don't expect to be repeated. But when you're a team that had zero interceptions all year, I don't blame you for signing a number three corner that had five in one year. So Dame Beltin is the other starting safety. They got two new starting safes. Not just make a Fitzpatrick. They signed Dame Beltin and he won an offseason competition with Andre Sisco who was a starting safety last year and has now been demoted.

12:32Yeah, this is a bit of a new look secondary, but Stevens and Thomas, the starting corners were here last year and they weren't good. Yeah. And Brownlee might be replaced at some point this year by Daniel O'Ponz, but I don't expect that to happen before this game just because of the. Daniel, I started a comment from Daniel Caribbean and now he asked the question, no, I, Pons Daniel. He missed a lot of time during training, he kept in the preseason with an injury. So a lot of crucial reps not played. I, I imagine they get them on the field very little in this game. I think you'll see a lot of Jarvis Brownlee in this one. Yeah. Justin, we're previewing an NFL game. We are actually sitting here talking about week one and it's pretty fun. So I've just kind of realized that when you start talking about a football game, that must mean that football is back and price picks is bringing out their best offer yet. That's correct. Talk a little about the defense where I think the Titans may have a huge advantage. Stay right there. Welcome back, audio audience. Let's continue on here. Previewing Titans Jets. I want to talk a little about the defensive side of the football. First of all, there's something interesting that I noticed or not I didn't notice this. I mean, I saw this on Twitter, but we all know about the 12 personnel, 13 personnel revolution that's going around the NFL. We also know that Mike McDonald pretty much figured out the way to stop it was to have a player like Nick Mnwari, who can be a run defender and a coverage player, can play like a linebacker or a defensive back, depending on what the offense does. The way that Mike McDonald was able to counter the 12, 13 personnel stuff was to just simply not match personnel. He's like, fine, you want to run your heavy personnel?

15:41I'm going to keep my nickel defense or my dime defense on the field. If you think you can run at us, prove it. We had the right players to prevent that. Robert Sala last year with the 49ers had the fourth highest rate of not matching personnel. Mike McDonald far and away, C-Hawks led the league in that stat, but Robert Sala was fourth and it's something that gradually increased throughout the year. Frank Reich has talked this off season about how the Jets want to run a lot more 12 and 13 personnel this season. Drafted Mason Taylor last year. Drafted Kenyon Sedeek in the first round this year. As Robert Sala said yesterday, Jeremy Rucker is still there. I think that we're going to see the Jets try to run a good bit of heavy personnel. I'm really curious to see how the Titans decide to play that. We were talking earlier this preseason about a clip where I think it might have been the big run where the C-Hawks now, we're talking about C-Hawks, where the C-Hawks were in a 12 personnel look and the Titans kept their nickel defense on the field.

16:44They did give up a 65 year touchdown on that play, but it's interesting to note. I don't know if this is preseason, vinyl and nonsense and we were reading too much into it or if this is sort of how Robert Sala wants to play. Keep his passing backs, defensive backs on the field when the other team goes heavy and see if you can dare them to beat you in the run game. I don't know. What do you think? Interesting point or interesting question, I guess, as well that we're going to find out because the C-Hawks are one of the few teams, as you said. Their nickel defense doesn't have three corners. That's three safeties. Julian Love, this year it'll be Taya Cotta as the traditional back end safeties. The Nikon and Yuri safety playing as a big sort of nickel slot corner, however you want to define it. But with the Titans, obviously, we're expecting Marcus Harris to be the nickel corner, which means in that case, the Titans wouldn't be matching personnel, but I will say that when and if they want to match personnel, they have the option.

17:45They've got the option to put Tony Adams maybe in that spot. A number three, say the not the greatest defender in coverage and truth. That's where I think you lose some of that ability if you're placing Harris with Adams. But you want that bigger third safety to match 12 and 13 personnel, then I do think you at least have the option with Tony Adams maybe coming into those looks. Yeah, so we'll see if the Titans A do what I expect them to do, which is continue to be at the front of this trend of how to stop the Titan revolution, which every team is leaning into this season. We saw with 21 Titans drafted in April's draft. See if the Titans can be one of those teams who figure out, no, we know how to stop this. And that could bode well for the whole season, honestly, if they're one of the few teams who are, you know, understanding how to play against this kind of formation. The other thing, the other big advantage Titans have that we should talk about, we've talked about, you know, throughout the off season, but it's been a while since we really just outright said it. The Titans have Jeffrey Simmons and John Franklin Myers in the interior of this defensive

18:51line. Now we know that Jets offensive line has been talked about as well as their team. So this is a strength on strength matchup. But I do think that the Titans have the advantage in this one. And I'm not alone because Robert Sella agrees. Well, I expect them to win. If you get a one on one, I fully expect it to be our advantage in every sense of the imagination. If they want on one block, Jeff, I'm on the outside with a Titan. I fully expect the D the C the B in the A gap all to be taken by one person. I expect one on one opportunities in past rush to be one or by our guys. I would also argue that every coach should feel that way about their guys. So, but when it comes to Jeff and Jeffrey, Jeff and Jeff M, you know, I'm biased. I think they're two that's probably one of the best combinations of interior D lineman and all the football when it comes to Russian and Paz. I agree. I absolutely love that confidence displayed by J F M.

19:54I'm sorry, by Sella about J F M and Jeffrey Simmons. I listen, we've almost forgot. I don't want to say for God, but we didn't see J F M in the preseason. He didn't really practice at all. He was dealing with some stiffness and they were just a lot of veteran days off. Like, I don't know that we're fully prepared and how excited we should be for the Jeffrey Simmons J F M combo because we haven't really seen it yet. I'm pumped. I think it's the strength of this team. I think it's the best position group. Probably on this time. And, see, and I will say this, as much as the J F M is good, I think it's very good. And I think it's a strength. The two weakest spots are on the interior, right? They signed Dylan Parham in free agency to be like a stop gap starter at one of the guard spots. He's just league average. I'm not even sure who I'd compare him to on this tie in line. I was trying to think of it, but like, I even think Dan Moore is better than Dylan Parham. Obviously, a very different position, but he's very much like a league average, maybe

20:56below average starter. And then the center, you know, Josh Myers, who's very much in that Austin Slope-Mentir of interior blockers. So if they can get Simmons lined up against Parham or J F M, get these guys lined up against the center without help, Josh Myers. I do think the tie-ins have a pretty big advantage across the interior. The strength of the tie-ins is funny. Is on the interior, the weakness for the jets is on the interior. The strength for the jets offensive line is on the edges. And obviously the tie-ins are a lot better inside than they are outside. So this should be pretty, pretty fascinating. And then there are some spots where I'm a little concerned about the Titans. And we'll see how they perform. This is the area that it's like, we're going to finally get our answers. Is this offensive line actually going to be good this year? And they got to go up against Meet Loaf, Tevandre Sweat on the interior, who we know can absorb a double team, can stop the run very well, can get after the passer at times, not the most consistent in that area. Didn't fit this Titans defense, but fits what the jets want to do.

21:58So we'll see if Austin Schloepman, who's going to be the guy primarily blocking Sweat, probably with a lot of help most of the time, can he hold up against a big, really big, really fast for his size guy? That's one of the areas I'm interested to watch, as well as, you know, is JC Latham going to give David Bailey as welcome to the NFL moment? Is David Bailey going to have a chance to work against Dan Moore? Does that scare you? Those are all the questions I have, but we talked about it with Dan Hanzis yesterday. I do think you can offset some of the past rush concerns by running the ball well at these edges. I agree. You know, Will McDonald, I said yesterday, he's always been a bad run defender. And I don't have faith that David Bailey is going to come into the NFL and be a really good run defender in week one. And that's not a shot at David Bailey. Like that typically takes time. And it was one of the knocks on him coming out of college. And then I, he's lined up, you know, on the right side. You're telling me that right-sided duo. I know Carmon is a rookie too, but he's big.

22:58He's physically aggressive. That right-sided duo of Carmona and Latham can't just eviscerate David Bailey in the run game. I think there's a good chance that they could. So I absolutely think that it's interesting. If you're running the ball as angry feet as like duo outside zone, you might have a tough time running it up the middle. Tovon, it's not, of course, tovondre sweat, but it's also Harrison Phillips and David on Mignata. They got some good run stoppers on the interior the jets do. You've got to run it to the outsides. Anytime you get Will McDonald, David Bailey on the field, that's going to be the time to try to run the football directly at them and ask them to stop it. You can't trust that you're going to be winning those battles on the inside. I think in the run game against guys like sweat and Harrison Phillips. Rosser Grids has a good point here. Just rage bait David Bailey a few times and he's bound to commit a felony and get ejected. Well, I don't know if he committed a felony, but he did attack a photographer or something weird happened there. Something weird happened there.

24:00Justin, is there anything else you're looking for in this matchup specifically? Anything that you think the Titans have in advantage or a disadvantage in before we kind of get to our game flow score predictions, final thoughts and answer some questions. Plus we're going to give away a ticket to the game. I mean, I'll try to go rapid fire because I think there's a lot of it. I think the jets have a pretty good pass catch and core. Garrett Wilson, AD Mitchell, Drafton Mark Cooper, Draft Kenyans, Cedique, Mason Taylor. They got a legitimate pass catch and core. Saw some concerns for this Titan secondary throughout training camp in the preseason. Is it a latte Taylor who draws the Garrett Wilson matchup more often than not and how does he fare? I think you want to try to avoid Wilson versus Marcus Harris, but they're going to move Wilson around and probably put him in the slot quite a bit. He could win inside outside. That's one of those things. The run stopping for the Titans. I've heard Jets fans say Robert Salon never cared about stopping the run. Well, they've got a good running back in Breeze Hall and a good offensive line.

25:04They have to play. Obviously, he doesn't value a nose tackle. Kind of pairs to him, not caring too much about that. How do they Breeze Hall? How do they measure up in Jeffrey Simmons, JFM? They got to win those battles. They also need the edges to win the battles in the run game too. We had a question earlier. I'll just bring it up now. Someone asked if Keldrick Falk is going to play. He is. He's practicing in full capacity. He will be playing on Sunday. Those are some of the ones that the secondary, tiny secondary against these Jets receivers. But like every battle, it's week one. We don't know a lot of every battle is uninterested in. You mentioned Keldrick Falk, full participant in practice on Wednesday, who was not a participant in practice on Wednesday. Was Cendrick Gray? Cendrick Gray did not long as the limited participant practice that he would need. I believe to clear concussion protocol. There's still a chance they run him out there for a limited practice today. He gets to see the neurologist. He goes out there Friday and does a contact practice.

26:04But I don't know if the Titans are going to have a real contact practice this week. Teams usually do walk through on Friday. We don't know how solos are going to run this, but I'd be pretty surprised, pretty skeptical that Cedrick Gray will be able to play in this game. That is a tough blow. I am a little concerned about what that looks like. I do think James Williams is one of those guys that you can play in coverage and play against the run. That Nick Mnwari type of guy because he's a former safety plan linebacker. I think Kevin Winston Jr. is one of those guys as well that can be that sort of skeleton key type player. The Titans own version of Nick Mnwari. That's why you bring in Tony Adams to be able to have a third safety on the field. It's interesting how that's going to shake out. We had a comment from Daniel Caribbean saying that Kenyan Cedrick will be dangerous with a duck. Makes me think Daniel is potentially an Oregon duck. Fan Cedrick was a full participant in Jets practice, but this is a guy who missed most,

27:05if not, I mean, pretty much all of training camp with an injury. They have Mason Taylor, a second round pick last year. They have Jeremy Rocker. They can run the two tight end stuff, whether or not they have Cedrick. I think Cedrick will be active for the game, but I'd be pretty surprised if he's like a big part of the Jets offense. We don't have to spend a lot of time here, but just wanted to answer Daniel's question. I agree. He missed so many. I loved him coming out, but he missed so much of training camp. You have to think that he's not going to be a huge part of the game plan. Yeah. All right. Let's take our last break here. We'll come back. Give away a ticket. We'll give our final score predictions. I think this is going to be a rather low scoring game in the first half.

28:08I think we could see the fireworks erupt in the second half. I think both teams are going to kind of come in and start filling each other out. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few three announced to open the game. I wouldn't be surprised to see Titans Twitter and Titans subreddit and full blown meltdown mode after the Titans go three now a couple of times. Those are the same old. The last Titans are the same. So that's kind of what I'm expecting. If the Titans score an opening drive touchdown, that would be amazing. But I'm sort of expecting maybe they have like a nice first drive when it's in the scripted period, but I feel like it's going to be slow going like a six three game at half time. Come out in the second half. And that's when the Titans start to build maybe a bit of a lead. I am predicting a Titans victory here. I think they get this thing done 24 to 17. Yeah, like I'm always pessimistic. I think it's the nature of being a Titans fan, but it's week one. I'm excited. I'm having fun. I am not going to predict the Titans loss. I could see them losing this game in truth, but there is no way that I am going to predict a Titans loss.

29:09There's no way in hell. I am going to go Titans 27 Jets 20. There you go. Our official predictions for week one, the first ones we've had a chance to make this season. Let's see if who's more right. We'll keep up with it all year long. Whoever has a closer score since we both picked a Titans win. And let's answer some live chat Q and A questions. The truth, Mellow, is it fair to say Dan Moore is equal to Fashanu? Fashanu had a 69-PFF grade and more a 61-PFF grade. I would take Fashanu over Dan Moore, though he was, yeah, he had a little bit of, you know, inconsistency as a sophomore, Fashanu did, but he was a second year player last year. He's growing, ascending, getting better. I would take him over Dan Moore, and I expect he'll be better for the jets this year than Dan Moore will be for the Titans. Bruce Baker wondering, do you think they will move Bailey all around? I'm curious to see how they use him. It's tough to project a rookie's first game in the NFL to be used all over the formation, although he is the second overall pick. And I do think it's interesting that Aaron Glenn ran mostly a 3-4 last year, but he's talked about wanting to be more multiple in their fronts this year, so you might see some 3-4 look, some 4-3 fronts.

33:15And in that case, you will see Bailey moving around. I wonder if he'll be moving from like, left end to right end, though, and how much of that will come into play here if he's going to get to like pick his match-ups or if Will McDonald wants to pick his match-ups, and then throws Bailey over to the other side. Be interesting to see how they deploy their pass rushers. Yeah, I agree. If I remember correctly in college, Bailey often lined up opposite the right tackle. I don't know if that society is more comfortable on or whatever. I hope he does, because I would trust JC Latham more than I trust Dan Moore. Although when they got their pass rushing unit in, the jets, Will McDonald is a good pass rusher, too. So whether it's McDonald or Bailey, you'd have to think the tackles more in Latham will have to show up and be ready for the chat. Those aren't elite guys yet. Certainly, we don't know Bailey yet, but it's not a Daniel Hunter and Will Anderson by any stretch. But it's a difficult enough match-up where Bailey and McDonald will probably give the tights tackles some fits if they're not ready for it.
