Good morning, you guys. It is Amanda and Baron, the ABC's of KSL and Radio.
He has Amanda and Baron are having conversations.
Yes, we are in studio with us today. We have John and Nancy from Engelberg Antics. Good morning, you guys.
Good morning, Mack.
So give us a quick review of who Engelberg Antics is.
We are a antique vendor mall in downtown Salem on Liberty Street between State and Court.
We have 53 vendors right now.
Oh, it's 53 different ideas of what's cool.
That is cool. You never know what you'll find.
Okay.
So I'm going to go a lot of vendors underneath one rough because how does that make you shop different from a typical antique store?
A lot of the traditional, typical antique store to be like one person curating everything or maybe a couple things on consignment.
With us, each vendor, each booth is like its own little store.
So Engelberg Antics is one store, but there's like 53 stores inside of it.
And each one is a real small business which makes it neat that somebody could have a business that's small without having to spend all of their time at it.
We just process sales. They curate their stuff. They take care of the booth.
It makes a fun.
Yeah, that's like you said, it's not one person's one idea.
It's several different things. So the whole family can go in from grandma grandpa, mom, dad to the kids and there's something for everybody.
And we see that a lot.
Yes, we're a normal antique store. It's like, okay, let's go into this one for grandma really quick.
It's not grandma's antics.
It has one look that one person would like where this has a lot.
Something for everybody.
Yeah, and you can spend hours in there.
Oh, my gosh.
Just looking.
Have you got lost in there?
Yes, I have.
It's really cool.
So since we last talked to you guys, is there anything new, anything changed?
I know we only have about 30 seconds.
We're still just checking along.
We have a couple new vendors.
Most of our vendors, they don't leave. They stay.
Right.
We have one that's decided to move on.
We can do some other things that open the space up.
Okay.
We are.
See, they have space available if somebody will.
Oh.
That's space available.
That's so.
Just kidding.
Okay.
And even though they've some have been there for a long time, they always are changing up their booth.
It's never just the same.
They just keep changing.
They'll be changing.
They'll be changing.
They'll be changing.
They'll be changing.
They'll be changing.
They'll be changing.
They'll be changing.
They'll be changing.
They'll be changing.
Yeah.
You'll even come back to tell us people that they don't have time to spend.
Yeah.
Yeah.
We're going to see a quick break and we'll be about to see it.
Hey guys, it's Amanda Embarrass.
And we are back again with John and Nancy from Engelberg Antics.
And we kind of got cut off.
But what else is new and going on?
Well, super exciting.
April 1st is our 41 year anniversary.
Okay.
Inglebury has been in the exact same location since April 1st, 1985.
That's crazy.
And Henrietta Dell opened it.
We bought the store in 22, so we're carrying on her tradition.
Yeah.
And, yeah, April 1st will be 41 years.
There's going to be sales discounts throughout the store.
What day did you buy it?
It was February 1st.
You couldn't have held it off until April 1st?
Well, we should have.
Yeah, all right.
I put it all together.
Everyone.
So you haven't been really close.
You're four years.
Right.
Yeah.
Sorry.
I have to just see it.
I know.
And it didn't.
You failed me there.
And it's not an April Fool's joke.
So.
Okay.
So you guys are going to have your 41st anniversary.
Yes.
There'll be discounts.
Most of the winners will be doing something between 10 to 35%.
I think is what most of them are doing.
Okay.
We're going to have some drawings to the day.
Have some.
Right.
Have goodies to nibble on while you're shopping.
Yeah.
Just a cool one.
Yes.
Okay.
And the sale will go on from the first through the fourth.
Yeah.
Okay.
So you're going through Easter?
Yes.
So it will be closed Easter day.
Okay.
So Sunday.
So it'll be Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
Yeah.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Awesome.
So what a fun way to kind of do.
And what?
So I still do Easter baskets for my kids.
And so that would be fun to go and check out your store right
before Easter and check out some fun little goodies and whatnot.
Yeah.
It's going to be fine.
Yeah.
Absolutely.
And what are your guys' hours?
Yes.
Every day except Tuesday.
Okay.
Now we're coming Easter.
We will be closed Easter day.
Sunday.
And we're going to close Monday the day after Easter.
And have a vendor day.
So that way our vendors can come in.
Do some work on the blues.
Cleaning them up.
Redoing them.
Get them restocked.
Yeah.
Then we'll be closed Tuesday like normal.
And then Wednesday.
Open back up.
Yes.
Sorry.
You guys normally open up Sunday.
Normally yes.
Yeah.
11 to 6.
Close to the holiday.
Yeah.
The magic.
I was going to be doing that.
It's going to be good to see.
Don't forget they are coming together.
And you guys.
Your Easter.
You know it.
We don't know what's up.
But that's fair.
Have you got anything unique?
Are they expected to come through?
We saw.
Um.
So many things.
One thing.
And actually sold those.
Kind of hurt my heart a little bit.
A friend of the store.
Tim Knight.
A lot of people know Tim who is.
You know, icon of Salem.
You're okay.
he owned guitar castle. He's when it started it and ran it. He passed away. And we had a photograph
one of his prize possessions. It was of him and Todd Rungren. Okay. And Todd had signed it.
We had a hang in the hallway and on that stairwell and I had a prize. And it sold.
And everybody came through and you were like, no, no. Yeah, it's a lady came in and she had
seen it already and she she was a friend of Tim. So it's going to a good place. Oh good. But
I saw her come back up with it. There's like, huh?
So we do have one of the guitar castle signs that we're going to put up and have won't be for six years.
Yes. So that's cool. The mystery is so many different things through like that. I look up.
We're going to take a quick break and we'll be back in about 30 minutes to speak to you.
Hey guys, it's Amanda and Baron and we are back again with John and Nancy from Engelburg
Antics. So what is something that people usually say when they walk into your store for the first
time? Well, the first time people. I know. They're like, yes. Wow. What was that?
The most common thing. First time people is, wow, it's so big. Huge. Because it looks a bit
from the outside. Hi. And if they get a few steps in and there's a downstairs. Yeah. Yeah.
They're amazed at how big it is. Because from the street, it's like, you know, there's money
at the inside. Yeah. Right. Um, what I love about your guys is places that, yes, it is so big,
but it's like when you walk in, it's not only like a store, but a museum where you can see so many
different things and just imagine and picturing the people that used to use the items. It's just
really cool. The toys that the kids used to play with. And it's just awesome because you have
it just like a little time cap, a big time capsule. We, a lot of people, especially first
timers towards the end of their, you know, shopping trip through, you know, one thing I'll say to a
lot of is like, did you see your childhood here? No matter what their age. I did. Yes. One of the
things that I got super mesmerized by was the old tools. Yes. Um, because my husband's a handyman.
So just seen the old tools like, wow, the work that they used to put in and just what they had
available to them. It's just cool. It is. It's really cool. Yeah. Okay. And then, yeah,
and then you guys have a whole downstairs. So it's not just a huge massive upstairs. There's a
whole downstairs. The downstairs is actually bigger than the upstairs. The main thriller. Yes.
Because the wedding dress shop is taking up more space for downstairs. It goes all the way to
the far walls. Yeah. Yeah. You guys have all of you at all. Yeah. You storage. Well,
correct. Yes. Okay. And it's big. And it's big. And you guys aren't just a quick stop. No,
it's a great place to spend an afternoon. Um, bring a snack. Yeah. No, Nancy, you were saying that
you guys shut locked your doors a little early. Correct. We have to lock our doors at 545
because there is no way you can go through our store in 15 minutes. Right. So we want the last
15 minutes of the customers that are in our store to build and enjoy the last part of the experience.
I was being able to help them and focus on what they're looking for because we do one of a
home at night. And if you come in at 6 o'clock, there is no possible way to just see even the first
five feet. Okay. Okay. We're going to take a break in with you guys. Hey guys,
Amanda and Baron and we are back again with Nancy and John from Engelberg Antics.
So what made you guys fall in love with the antiques in this kind of business?
We just kind of morphed into it. Yeah. We got into it. I had a logging accident in 2015.
Was laid up for a couple years. Um, started kind of selling antiques in the driveway. Okay. We
enjoyed, you know, yard selling, antique shopping, things like that. We ended up getting a booth
at a small antique mall that opened in Turner and then we moved in Engelberg Antics. Got to know
Henrietta. The founder real well. Um, and when the opportunity came up, we were able to purchase
the business from her and carrying on what she began her tradition of it. Yes. And I love that
you guys have the experience being a vendor too. So if you have that relationship with your vendors
as in you've been in their shoes before. Absolutely. So that's really cool. I feel like that, um,
that brings a nice twist and touch to it that you can address. And that's our big motivator is
the vendor success. We want all of our vendors to be successful and anything that we can do to
help them with that, um, we're right there for them. Yep. Hey, man, what does that mean? You guys
to carry on Henrietta's world? Yeah. It's, yeah. It means a lot to us. I mean, she's,
well, such an important person in our life. And she taught us a lot. Even after we bought it,
she was still with us, you know, still for about two and a half years. Yeah.
She had a vendor. She had a booth there. Yeah. Love that. So yeah, we'll give you
the slides to you guys. It's very much. Absolutely. Very nice. Yeah. She taught us a lot.
What keeps it exciting day to day? Um, I think what the coolest things is our customers. Yeah.
New customers that come in. Customers have been coming in for decades.
Um, ones have been coming in for a few years. It's, they come in the first time as a customer
and quickly, they're more of a friend. Yeah. They'll come in. We'll just sit and chat with them and
you know, they'll tell us what's going on in their lives. Yeah. It's so neat. We have the most
amazing customers of all. Okay. I love that. And then why is shopping local, especially at a
place like you're so important right now, would you say? It's a kind of big moment right now is,
you know, staying away from the bid box stores and the algorithm-based decor. They want things
unique. Yeah. It's the big reuse, recycle, set a phone stuff away. There's still life to things.
There's still uses for things. Um, and then the older antique things, some of them have stories
that come with them. Yes. And just the love that items have had over the years and to know that
they're going to continue to be loved. Yep. Okay. So, um, yeah, again, I want to make sure our listeners
get this. You guys have a big event coming up on April 1st. Can you elaborate a little bit on
that again? April 1st, our 41-year anniversary that the store has been at 148 Liberty Street,
Northeast, the same location. Okay. Perfect. And then how can people follow along with what's new?
We have Instagram and Facebook, Hangover Gantics. Um, on our Instagram, we do quite a few
posts on the fun reels, but also on Saturdays. I try to do it every Saturday. Um, what I call
a Saturday morning walk through. Okay. And just one week. I'll be the main floor the next week
downstairs. And it's a live video showing each of the booths. Gotta get an idea what's changed in there.
Yes. I love that. Okay. Awesome. Thank you so much for coming.
