Almanac Adventureland, 651 West Tower, Alameda.

I realize that it is a big night or day. It is a massive diners day. They're in Australia. All the talk stops. We play football today, but we have to play this because I think we play this every single year because it is the craziest, zaniest, get your big butt off the field. The whole early roller was today in 1978. September 10, 1978, the great Bill King. Here's how it sounded. Oakland Freil's 20 to 14. The crowd takes up a 10 of defense. Robis, give that a sack of the backs. That's right. That's inside. That's your stay right back. It comes around. He's sidesteps. He's almost beat down. The ball. Let's fall in as well. It's a wild scramble. Two seconds on the clock. He's probably grabbing the ball. It is almost full. Cast rise. They covered in the end zone. The Oakland Freil's is scored on the most senior.
Unbelievable. Absolutely. Impossible. Green of a play. Stay where. While being hit. The ball squirted. Faller. Madden is on the field. He wants to know if it's real. They said let's get your big butt out of here. Is there a better call? I mean, I get it. If you're not a raider's fan, your knight's fan. There's lots of better calls. I get it. But if you could be objective and I understand that fan by its very wording is not. It's very important. If you're not a raider's fan, you're not a raider's fan. There's lots of better calls. I get it. But if you could be objective and I understand that fan by its very definition is not. But I mean, you even have to admit as a 49ers fan that that is a top five call of all time. Get your big butt out of here and is you know, zany and is anything right in the world anymore? I mean, it's just come on. You got to be a bill king fan at least. That is an incredible call. Top five or of all time. That's top five. You got to put that up there with the play. You got to put it with the starkest. Absolutely. You can't unhere get your big butt out of here. He does. That's amazing. That is the Holy Roller today. I mean, I'm going to say that.
I'm going to say that. I'm going to say that. I'm going to say that. That is amazing. That is the Holy Roller today in 1978. This is interesting. So Kevin Polar, the former giant, but he grew up in Southern California. He was on with Jim Rome yesterday. And he was asked the other day we were talking about, hey, we were saying have the Rams jump the not the Dodgers. We know that. But if they jumped the Lakers, is it does it go Dodgers? Lakers Rams or does it go Dodgers Rams? Lakers the way that the the Rams have been in Chan McVase of Noxious and all those kind of things. They beat him in a in a championship game. So has it changed at all? But this is interesting because we are just talking about this. And here's Kevin Polar who grew up in LA but played for the Giants talking about the hate between the Giants and the Dodgers. You got to Frisco. Did you have any idea that they hated us as much as they hated us down here? Yes, because when I was a kid, my parents would take me and my brother on this pretty incredible trip. It always seemed to work out and line up that we would go to a Oakland Raider game because we were Raider fans growing up.
And sadly, I still am. I'm not hopping off the bandwagon quite yet. But we would always go up see a Raider game and it would always we kind of always have it fall on a time that the Dodgers were in town. So going as a Dodger fan into San Francisco is much like being a Giants fan coming into LA. So I got to experience that at a young age to get a chance to. You know, be part of the Giants organization and kind of see the hatred that they do have for the Dodgers was very cool for me, very unique for me, growing up a Dodger fan. Fortunately for me, by the time I got to San Francisco, all my sort of Dodger fandom was kind of out the window. I had been a member of the Toronto Blue Jays in the big leagues for almost six years at that point. I had been in the organization for eight years. I kind of closed that book on my life of actually being a fan of a baseball team. My allegiance was to the team I was playing for. But the kid and me never kind of forgot that I was a Dodger guy.
And I knew how special and important that rivalry was. So you get to see it from the other lens was pretty cool. There you go. Hate, hate, hate. So we were we weren't asking the question the other day of whether it was at the top of the Dodgers. We were just asking basically over the three had they jumped the Lakers and I believe in that poll they had not. They had not the Lakers are still second most hated. I'm going to skip over Dan Campbell for today because I want to get to Todd he said so let's just do one more because I think this is very important. And since we're not going to be able to have a caboose pistol slash luns last call today just one more. Remember and I know people have been like they can't sleep. They need an update. And so you remember but sniffer guy down in Southern California that would go to bookstores and grocery stores and all that kind of stuff and he just that's what he would do. And he they finally threw the book at the guy. In fact here you go. Especially for the woman who texts us who says she doesn't listen but then text me every time that we play this story about how disgusting it is. We're playing this especially for you. Here is the maybe the final update on butts and a for
guy because they've gotten sick of them apparently. Here you go. Here's the news story news story so that means it's important from LA. Right doing this. Crouching down and getting. A man accused of sniffing women's back sides has been sentenced to 170 days in county jail for violating his parole. 39 year old Calise Crouter violated his terms when he was caught on camera doing this. Crouching down and getting close to people at a business in Glendale. Crouter was then arrested. He is convicted. He is a convicted sex offender with a history of arrest in the San Fernando Valley. Yeah that's right. She shouldn't let that story at all. By the way it's not it's not going to happen for a long time. So you can go down to Southern California without fear that someone's going to be sniffing your backside like a dog. 170 days in county jail for violating his parole. Calise Crouter. This was the 28th of August when you played that so 170 days. You have 170 days to go down to Southern California without fear
of this guy violating you like a dog. There you go. There's the update. That was we went out for a while. Of course, home games, pre-imposed. He joins Copes. And Stanford, he was hot for teachers. I'm sure. I don't know that actually. I do not know that. Todd Hussack joins his courtesy of the Uma Guest Live.
What's happening? How are you? I'm NFL season in action right now. We got the Niners tonight, Rams, college football, high school football, man, I'm fired up. It's tough to beat and I appreciate the hot for teacher leading. Yeah. I mean, you thought you'd probably love to hot teachers. You know, that kind of thing. I've not been around Stanford campus. Not hot for teachers. Do you think they would even let me on Stanford campus? There'd be like a lurch going off. Like, I graduated from Utah State. They're like, you are not worthy. What do you say? The Academy of Laws. Yeah. Cooler pawn. It'll be nice for you. I mean, there's just no way they would let me on the campus. In regards to just the game itself, did you ever go over to year? I've covered a couple games over there. Did you ever go to Europe or anything NFL wise? Or I mean, I'm sure you've been there. But did you ever go with the team? I played in NFL Europe. I played in NFL. You're there. OK, there you go. Yeah.
OK, NFL Europe champs Berlin, Thunder. I mean, we beat we beat T Martin's Ryan Fierre. Come on. You weren't you weren't watching that game back in 2002. I can't believe. But there's some good stories about that season, by the way. We started out on three. And our week four game was in Amsterdam. Oh my god. We took, we had like a team meeting. We're like, hey, we need a bonding experience. So we went to the Grasshopper Cafe and had a team bonding experience. And we won out and won the championship. What was that? What did you bond over? Like when you're in Amsterdam at the Grasshopper Cafe, and we all was like, there's grass. We wanted a team. We bonded at a higher level. It was a great time that we ended up winning the championship. After an own three-start, we came together and won the championship.
Yeah, that's true story. That is amazing. Yeah, it was. And then by the way, what was it? Maybe seven years ago, Stanford played in Sydney against Rice when I was doing the Stanford games. And so I went over and spent a week in Sydney. Australia is, that's a real class place, man. That is, Sydney is very much like San Francisco. Great people, great outdoor, like great weather. It was epic. That was an outstanding week. And Stanford went out and got the road win. A very long road win. I know what you've talked about, like the travel schedule and everything. I think it's a fascinating dynamic of how these teams are getting. Now, will it impact the Rams? They've only been there for a day and the adrenaline and all that stuff. It might not impact it as much. Fifteen hours flight, I don't care how nice that plane is. Yeah. The sleep schedule, it's got to be impacted.
It has to be. And so I think there'll be a very interesting thing to see how these teams kind of react to. I think they'll maybe come into play in like third and fourth quarter of these teams. On, on the same level, certainly it's, it's going to be different. Those teams are going to be different. And how their bodies react. And after going through 40, 50 plays and how do they respond in that last 30 plays might play a part in how the game ends. Todd Hussack is joining us. Of course, you, you're going to hear and see Todd 49ers home games pre and post. Of course, played as Stanford, a broadcast Stanford. Let me go back to that for a minute because here's my completely non-athlete theory on this whole thing that during the game, like adrenaline is going to be happening. And like you said, third, fourth quarter of it might show its rear. It's ugly head. But what, I mean, you were broadcasting those games, but when did you guys go over? I don't know. You probably didn't have a choice when you went over. But I mean, what is that like? Because I've done two games over in London and in Europe.
I went over to the Raiders and they told us what to do the whole time and everything. And I did sleep in one of those kind of half-up beds. I still couldn't sleep in that. Everybody's assuming that you can sleep in that. I couldn't. Maybe these athletes are different. Maybe they're taking melatonin. I don't know. But like, what was the adjustment like for you when you went over to Sydney? But by the way, their, their plane is not the same. The setup they have is not the same that I'm sure we traveled in. Yeah. It, it takes you, it takes you some time to adjust. And I think it's interesting. The Rams are like, this is how we're going to do it. This is how we're going to approach it. It's not the same sleeping on a plane and sleeping in a hotel. Your body is not the same. It's just not like sleeping in your home or like certainly at home game or home hotel and getting up and your pregame routine and you're in a different place. And it's, it's just different. The Rams are, we'll see. We'll see how it all plays out. But I think that I went over there.
I went, when I went to Europe, it was a 13 hour flight with the Raiders. And I had one of those flat beds with the TV and the whole nine yards and everything. I was exhausted for the first two days. And I, I slept off and on. But like you said, it's not like hotel. It's not like your home because I heard the Rams yesterday saying they put so much science into it. And then of course, you know, McVague got up there and was trying to sell it too. And he was saying, oh, the players got a ton of sleep. Then we had a, had a walk through then they got tons more sleep. And I'm like, I'm telling you, that's, I think it's risky. They're saying it's science. I think it's risky because I was in the exact, not the exact plane. But I had that, you know, that whole thing where you lay flat and everything. I, I, I struggled to sleep on it. Hey, and John, you're not 65, 275 pounds. Good points. Like that. Good point. Like half that size. Like this, that those, those beds and the things that they have on the plane are not equipped necessarily for guys of that size. So it's, they're not getting their normal pregame routine. And by the way, it's also a pregame routine with like, installation and how you're preparing.
And hey, we want to do our walk through. And this is how we prepare like this is our Wednesday and Thursday and Friday schedule. Like those things are impacted by how they're traveling. So I think it'll be, I think it'll be fascinating. I, I, there'll be a really interesting way to see how both guys and, or both teams and their personnel react to that travel schedule. I think the 49ers will be more prepared for this one, certainly in, in the later quarters. Now, here's the flip side. How does week two get impacted? Right. I've done the 49ers have to get back on schedule and granted, there'll be, there's an extra day travel and they don't have to play for another, call it nine days, but that'll impact week two. And I think the Rams might be ready for week two, but hey, we need a, nineers in a week one win. And certainly it's such a huge, divisional game where we saw the Seahawks get a win.
Really wish the future would have finished them off and, and started the Seahawks off of the loss in week one, but it's, it, it's going to be at the end of the season. We saw it last year with that week one win in Seattle. That was a great win for the Niners and impacted. Where, where they ended up in the, in the post season. Todd Hussack is Jonas. Thanks for hanging out. We're a member. We are live at Almanac, Adventurerland, 651 West Tower Avenue in Alameda, stop on by. We're going to start the, the round table with everybody. Everybody's hanging out now at about noon. So about 15 minutes and we've got a big announcement and a special guest at about 1215. So don't miss that. As far as the game is concerned. Yeah, you're the, well, you're the, you're the, yeah, this special guest isn't anything close to you. I mean, you're always a special guest, of course. It kicks a even a beauty. Yeah. And the game itself, obviously, everybody's talking about the Rams and Aaron Donald's not going to play,
but let me just start with the concerns and then we'll move forward. What, what is the thing that concerns you the most about the Rams tonight or today? Well, I think Miles Garrett had defensive front. I think that's where the 49ers offensive lines struggled late in the game and late in the season with back, back games against the sea hawks, the sea hawks defensive front took it to that 9ers offensive front. And those are the questions coming in. How can the 9ers rebuild that offensive interior, especially that offensive line where, all right, we saw the left guard. Can they, and we saw the sea hawks do it to the Patriots late in the game where they were able to get to the quarterback? Can that 49ers offensive front be not just good, but solid and dominant like they, they need dominant offensive front to compete with the sea hawks and the Rams. And I think throughout the season. So can they come together and protect Brock Pertie who we've talked about at the last few weeks?
Brock Pertie is in his prime. This is his fourth year starter. He has a chance to be a premier and a full quarterback, which by the way, he has been for the last few years. When he's been healthy last year, he came back and that offense was different with him. Matt Jones did a great job, but Brock Pertie is a different quarterback. He can run this offense better than anybody else. And I think this offense is going to be a new look where he's got some receivers and some weapons that both him and Kyle Shanian have not so they're more equipped and they're probably better. They have better personnel to push the ball down the field, but that only works that they can protect. And can they keep Brock Pertie safe where he can drop back seven yards deep, throw the ball down the field, get those 15 yard ends and those throws that he does better than any other quarterback in the NFL. And they create big plays, which is where like the Rams made some off season moves, bringing corners and trim. Doffy, can they attack that defensive secondary?
That only works if they can protect. So I'm really curious to see Mike Evans and Stribling and Robinson and all of a sudden this is a passing attack with George Kiddelback is Kiddel 90% is a hundred percent. If so, that's a tough that's a tough task for defense, a coordinator to kind of keep all these weapons. They're going to be single covered on certain players and that's where Brock Pertie needs to attack and can Christian McCaffrey be effective in the run game can. Kailon black come in and maybe get 10 carries this game and move the ball effectively because Shanian has not had that backup tailback that he trust to give the ball. To eight to 10 times game, which takes some pressure off Christian McCaffrey and all of a sudden we might see McCaffrey get six or seven catches and maybe 15 carries. But Kailon black can carry the ball for eight times and or 10 times and 60 yards and that's that could be the difference where I'm really expecting a more attacking offense and a defense that with their new defensive coordinator.
Can they create some turnovers and get the ball back for an offense that can put up points in hurry and not just have those 13 play grind it out drives convert on a bunch of third downs like I want to see some six play ADR drives that have big plates and Mike Evans is going down the field and and captain ball and traffic and Sean Stribling is catching and running and I'm excited to see what this. Shanahan party by the way, I think you have one of the top three offense of coordinators and play gollers. I think you have one of the top five quarterbacks and brought party who can execute that offense at a level that very few quarterbacks can all of a sudden with some weapons that he can spread it out. There's there's guys all over the field that can catch and run. We haven't talked about the both Samuel come back. Can he get four or five catches for yard after after the catch and they're going to block better down the field for. Christian McCaffrey so I'm excited to see I think a new look offense that is going to be much more attacking than we've seen in the last couple of seasons.
You're the best man I could sit and talk matters with you all day. Thanks so much. We appreciate it. We're looking forward to you working with you all season long. Thanks man. We'll talk to you soon. And myself and John Dickinson will take you into 49er pre-game and up to kick off at 5.30 tonight from Melbourne, Australia. How about that? Niners are in a different hemisphere playing football. That's incredible. Anyway, we've got a lot to get to today. We'll talk about this game. We'll talk about the season. We'll make some predictions. We'll have some fun.
We'll drink some beer. We hope to see all you guys out here ahead of the week one kick off. How are we doing, fellas? We're doing great. This is the great. It's incredible, considering where we've been in the last year, that this is the biggest roundtable we've ever had. Who to thought there'd be seven of us sitting up here? We got Kruger with us now this year. You see him every night, night, night, we in on the... We'll be with Saturday, the 9er mat. What's it called? 49er forecast. Don't forget 49er forecast. I forget every time. That's why I'm... Cope's listens. Yeah. Every Saturday, do you think? Maybe you might be our first guest, actually. At least we might be the first guest. Just like the name of the show, that's the news to me. Anyway, we'll need to get to here. Here's where I want to start today. We're going to get to a special announcement coming up at 12.15. I think the first place to start is what do we know or believe about this team? Because as much upside as I think this team could have and as much excitement as I think there is around the potential for this team last year didn't go in any capacity the way we thought it would go. Yet it ended in a division around performance. It had a chance to win the division on the final day of the season last year.
They go to Philadelphia and win a game with Garrett Wallow out there at linebacker, no Nick Boehm, no Fred Warner. You've got Matt Jones winning games for him. I got to deal with the Rams, the defending Super Bowl champion, Seattle Seahawks, who looked just as impressive defensively last night in their week one win over the, the trick maybe, New England Patriots. So I guess we'll start there and Murph, we'll start with you about what we believe about this team. And I'll start with the question of, are these 49ers still Super Bowl contenders? Well, first of all, love in the lead-off spot. Age before beauty, right? Uh huh. Come on now. Let's go for the old heads out there. Let's go. And by the way, how are we doing? How are we doing on Jetlag on the island here? How are we doing? Going through the Webster tube, how many time zones did we go through? Are we good? Major Jetlag. Who planned their journey over here better? Did Kruger's journey, is that a better plan than my plan? You know what I mean? What are we going to do? I mean, you got your hours early right after your show made notes. I just showed up and had a beer too. Kruger's the way I'm ready to roll. I'm the Niners, right?
Check different approaches. So yeah, it's hard for me to think, Coats, about something other than Jetlag and the time zones and all the things we've been talking about for so much. And by the way, shout out the Garrett Wallow shout that you got us already, man. So listen, great to be here. Great to be drinking this beer. That's a heavy question to start with. What do we know about this team? All we know about this team is it's been weird, right? The Kyle Shanahan car accident was weird. The Jet York, can I say this? The Jet York arrest was weird, right? Haven't seen her heard from them since. The, I don't think we're going to hear or see. No, 1215 is coming on. That's a special. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. I'm going to be an action back here. I'm going to hide in the day already. I like it. I like it. Anyway, weird, weird, August, weird, Nick Vosa not practicing. Is he holding in? Christopher McCaffrey not practicing. Is he holding in? Don't forget Dejan Love. Dejan Love. Oh, my favorites. I mean, you want to love that? That is special. Yes. So from the clink of Idaho, Dejan Love joined us.
I'm trying. I'm trying my hardest to convince myself that the 49ers are still the 49ers, right? Because you got Kyle Shanahan and you got George Kittle and you got Nick Bose and you got Fred Warner and you got Christian McCaffrey and all that. So I'm defaulting to that. I'm ignoring all the static that happened that questioned me. Like, what's going on, Perugna? Marate is not there. What's going on in the front of the oven? So let's just remember this. Kyle Shanahan is one of the elite coaches in the entire NFL. Any NFL team that has an elite coach is going to be in the mix. So that's what I believe you ask, what do we believe? What do we know? I believe Kyle is one of the best head coaches in the NFL. I know he will have them in the mix. That's my answer. You're honor. I would I would follow that up. I said, that's why they got to where they got to last year, right? Like I would look at 2021 in the year where they lost all of their running backs and they end up making Debo the wide back. They go on the run to the NFC championship. I used to look at that as Kyle's greatest coaching performance in a season. I think we've got to go back to last year now and say he lost starters week after week
after week and still found ways to perform. And really that was on the back of Christian McCaffrey in a running offense that was 30th in the league in yards per carry last year. So I'm going to throw it down to Kruger right now and say, if we don't know absolutely what's true about this team, what has to be true about the 2026 49ers in order for them to compete for a Super Bowl? I mean, I think Shanahan said it. They have to be balanced. You know, they have to be balanced offensively. If they if they can't run the ball, you're right. I mean, they were terrible running the ball last year. The question is why maybe I mean, they basically think it's their receivers. Their receivers didn't block well enough. Their receivers didn't stretch the field well enough. And they think with more impact dynamic big play receivers that that will create more room and they'll be able to run it better. But they're running back basically the same line. It counter Colby and Carver Lewis sharing left guard. So I do think it's going to be can they run the ball? Especially tonight. Can they run the ball? Can they be balanced? And if they can, I think it might be Brock Pertie's time because I think Brock Pertie,
I saw the Brock Pertie I saw every day this summer was on point. And he looked really good. So I think he's going to take in the next step. He's got to have protection. He's got to have a run game. Yeah, I think the things that I mean, everybody's got to be healthy, right? That's the number one key. But Brock becoming like a top five QB. I think that elevates everything. And the way they've talked about him, the way you've talked about him, not mehoko. Anybody who's out there seeing him practice thinks that he's got another level or another gear that he can take his game to. And I think that could be the sort of the linchpin for the success of the 49ers this year. Derek, when you look at this team, we talk about Super Bowl window. And we'll get it. We'll get into talking about the age of this team and all the vets and the guys that they have to rely on. But in terms of whether or not this is still an open window, do you believe it's still a Super Bowl window or are they trying to pry this thing back open? I think it's a Super Bowl window that's dwindling. We say team that's mixed with old veterans and new veterans. But as far as what do we know, we know absolutely nothing. But we know things based on the past. We know that Kyle Shanahan's one of the best play callers in all of football. We know that Christian McCaffrey is one of the best running backs in all of football.
When he's healthy, we know that Nick Bosa could be defensive player of the year and have 18 and a half sacks. We know that Brock Perty can prove all the haters wrong going from, you know, Mr. A relevant and being one of the best quarterbacks in football. For this season, there's a lot of what ifs. There's a lot of question marks. I think for the 49ers to be successful, they got to do what they didn't the past. I trust this coaching staff. I trust Raheem Morris coming over. I think that's a huge factor tonight. His familiarity with the Rams. So what we know is based on the past, but I think the past is proven all off to the 49ers. Yeah, we'll get into all that stuff too. We'll talk office. We'll get more specific on Brock Perty and about Raheem Morris and what he's going to bring. John, back with us for the 2026 season. Excited to have you back with us. It's awesome to hear from the round table. Do you think from afar watching last year, then now getting into it again this season, is this team better than last year's team, you think? Now they're toast. They're screwed. So it runs over. I mean, it went 12 and five last year. And they should be better, right? They added Mike Evans, Nick Moser should be healthy. Brock missed a bunch of time. I mean, logic tells you that you can have a worse record and actually be a better team.
But I think that, I mean, we're all sitting here and we've all said it. And this is why we're really happy that there's actually a game to talk about because we've exhausted every single angle that there is. It does come down to in the NFL injuries, even though you don't want to talk about it every day that, you know, and I'm encouraged by what Kruks said the other day. He said, basically, Alfred Collins stinks and we don't need to miss him. So he said, he said the trade him before the last preseason. He's like, no, Kruks, Kruks, every day, man, he knows. Kruks, I want price and he's a man on that. But never Kruks, Logan often wrong. So in terms of the offseason, they had a really amazing offseason. And if a bunch of 30 year old guys and offense can stay healthy and a bunch of young, what they have some defense can can fulfill potential, which is a bad word in sports. Then they can be really, really good, but they play in the toughest division in, I'm going to break this breaking news. They play in the toughest division. Oh, I mean, when you look at what happened last night, even, we know the Rams are the glamour team of the NFL. We'll get into more of that as well. But Seattle didn't look like they missed a beat defensively last night. Three interceptions to the turn end to 10 points. A touchdown and then a field goal and then one that ends up icing the game.
JD is it more about the 49ers ability this year or is it about what happens in the division? It's about all of it, honestly, but the 49ers are going to have to keep up. And if anything Seattle, even though they wound up coming back and winning impressively, they're more vulnerable today than they were 24 hours ago. And that is an open door for the 49ers. So look on paper, they're better, but they're going to have to stay healthy. And I do think the Super Bowl window is open for them because they played the card of taking themselves out of the conversation going into lassies. And remember last year was the reset. Last year was the younger guys. Maybe it's not going to be what it had been. Maybe it's not Super Bowl or bust. If you go through a non Super Bowl or bust year and you go 12 and five with a bunch of injuries, you're 100% back in the Super Bowl or bust conversation. Now what's interesting is last year they used 11, they had 11 picks going into the 2025 season in the 2025 draft and they used every one of them, right? There was another that came out the other day that said if you go back to 2021, there's only one player on the roster right now who was drafted by the Niners in the first or second round. And that's where an article green.
A lot of what we saw last year was about bringing in young talent and needing to see elevated talent or see those guys take the next step. And so many of those guys get injured. Michael Williams is on PUP to start the now Alfred Collins, much to Kruger Shagrin is going to be out for the season with a torn Patel and ten. And so I'm going to throw this one over to Marcus now Marcus. What's the reason they can compete this year and what's the reason your mind that they wouldn't? Well, to start the reason why they wouldn't is because I think we all know that there is a gap between the Niners, the Seahawks and the Rams when it comes to the battle at the line of scrimmage. We all saw how those final matches played out last year. Now that is one of the biggest questions coming into the season. Did they do enough to address the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball? I think that might be one of the biggest deciding factors in tonight's matchup and that's going to play out throughout the entire season. Now you ask why can they compete? They can compete because they have one of the best coaches in football, Kyle Shanahan. They have one of the best rosters. They have four to five future Hall of Famers. They went 12 and five last year with all of those injuries knocked off the defending Super Bowl champions in the Eagles. So this is a team that can compete with anybody.
The problem is the two biggest teams that got to compete with are in their own division in the NFC West. And we're going to talk about what success means for this team too. There's only so many years you can go, ah, they were close or they progressed a little bit. Like it is year 10 for Kyle Shanahan. And that doesn't mean anything to me in terms of like, you can't, the people who think maybe he shouldn't be here, you got to move on, get a guy who can win the big one. I'm like, you want Andy Reed situation? You want to go to five NFC championship games with Andy Reed and the Eagles and then he leaves and he immediately starts winning Super Bowls. The fear I would have in moving on from a guy like that. That said, I think there's got to be progress. And I think there's got to be tangible progress. Not just Kyle keeps figuring it out. You've got to develop talent in the way they did in the first wave of this regime. Yeah. And Andy Reed and Alaszi strikes right. We're here in Alameda in the shadow of the Coliseum John Madden's raiders that had knocked on the door many, many years. This happens in sports, Marv Levy and the Bills. Yeah. I'd rather be that team in the mix all the time. I'm not going to say you got to win or you got a clean house at all. So you want to have these guys. Yes, it's frustrating. Marcus said it all right there that like they literally might be one of the top five teams
in the NFL and two of the teams ahead of them are in their freaking division. So it's the as we made this joke before from my days on the golf beat. Rick Riley from sports illustrate used to call a Phil Mikkelson, Ernie L. Sergio Garcia in the unlucky sperm club. They were they were born in the same era as Tiger Woods. You know, I'm not calling the Rams of the Sack of Woods. That's something totally. Well, that's there's yeah, let's not talk fantasy football team names. All right. Yeah, let's not do that. 12. Yeah. Point being is that yeah. So you're going to have to overcome that somehow. So wait, but JD mentioned it. The sea hawks are not the same team. They were 24 hours ago. Sam Donald's banged up right now. I mean, yeah, they're saying it might not be as bad, but who knows how long that lingers. The New England Patriots in the AFC are down AJ Brown all of a sudden. So these things happen fast. Yeah, health is a key for everybody. The Niners are looking at that again this year and looking at coming off of this health and trying to the health problems from last year and looking to make a jump forward. Adam Copeland, John Bickinson, Derek Papa, John Lund, Brian Murphy, Marcus Bouchet, and Larry
