Judy Smith decided to accompany her husband to a work conference in Philadelphia. She disappeared some time after leaving the hotel to go sightseeing. Months later, her body was found in a remote area of the Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina.

There were several alleged sightings of Judy in both the Philadelphia area and North Carolina. In Philadelphia, people who thought they saw her described her as being disoriented.
