The guys welcome Coach Stan Spivey back to the podcast today. Big win for the Bearcats as they advance to the final four! Lots of talk about the Emerald baseball team and Dixie softball. Plus the travel where abouts of Greenwood HC Chris Liner.
It's the Lindtland Sports Guy's podcast, Tom Carroll, Chris Cox, Kenny Falon, and the
coach.
Stan Spivey joining you from Howard's on main in Uptown Greenwood.
Glad to have you with us.
It is the twice-paked potato with a ribeye steak sandwich, and Kenny had it up close and
personal.
It was hard smelling that twice-paked potato.
You might be quiet.
I got to tell you how I'm talking about it, so I had to try it.
That one is delicious.
Oh, so good.
I love it.
Glad to have Stan back in town once again.
He's all decked down.
As a tiger fan, I got to give credit credit to your coastal kicked our butts.
That's not our Tuesday night, it was not pretty, and we couldn't dive into that a little
bit as well.
But Stan, glad to have you here, man.
Glad to be here.
So we got a lot to talk about.
We got NCAA tournament continues on, starting today at 7-10, I think it's the tip off for
the first game.
We can dive into those games a little bit.
There's a couple there, and then more to more.
Duke's going to be in the Friday brackets, and we'll see how they do.
They've got probably the toughest test, I would think, out of everybody.
That's going to be in the sweet 16.
That is there.
Emerald and Saluda ended up doing battle at John Aves Stadium at Leach & Field last
night, a 9-8 victory in favor of the Vikings.
Some great hitting to get diving to that as well.
Gosh, what else we got?
Oh, we can't forget.
We got Final Four action, and as the Lander Bearcats are going to be making their way over
to Indianapolis for the Division II Final Four.
Well, that was a game, man.
I'm telling you.
You hadn't taken me out of the crowd about it.
It took me a minute.
It was going to ESPN Plus, but I got a little he-loose, it was all right.
Good deal.
We've got a lot going on, a lot to talk about that is happening in there, but I want to
thank Howard Cordley again for coming in and allowing us to be here, Clyde has been in
rare form today.
Already, he won't talk to me, he says I'm too busy, so we said doing a lot of cookings,
doing other stuff.
We'll see if we can grab him as he comes back back here once again, but let's start with
a big game that didn't happen last night.
Peter Bearcats taking on the Damon University, ended up being a 77-74 win at halftime.
It was 39-34 Damon, and Damon pretty much dominated the entire first half when you look
at it.
It was a lot of inside-outside kind of stuff that ended up happening there.
I think Lander basically just ran him to death is what it looked like in the second
half.
Omar Kucho, Omar just basically said, you know what?
Let's play your style of basketball and see if they can hang, and they couldn't.
I mean, the intensity level on that side of the ball, defensively, you know, your defense
predicates your points, and that's why I have my smile.
Like I said, it took him what I always call it during the half-quarters, but once that
12-minute mark hit in the second half, they were just, as he says, hair on fire, and
they didn't laugh gas.
They went on a 12-2 run, I think, to start the second half.
Well, I can't forget.
They were down walked by 10 at one time.
I mean, you know, they fought back from that, and then it went like a great win.
I mean, that was a team that was undefeated on the season.
So for winning that game, they get to play last year's national championship, so you know.
That's all the matchup you talked about Monday, with Pristle, and was it people Kowski?
That was phenomenal matchup, those two guys, and to have a guy that's Pristle's side
that can step out and shoot threes like that, that was phenomenal to see too.
He definitely turned the game around, and he's a really good free-to shooter, as they
found out too, but you didn't give me a name for Damon, but I would call him to, you know,
name him.
A bunch of tug dudes as well, I say.
They were like the wildcats, I think, because what they are.
A lot of the...
I think they were out of New York.
Peaceburg.
I think, I think.
Oh, it is.
Yeah, it's Peaceburg, as they played at Pittsburgh Municipal Courts, or whatever.
Well, I mean that's where they played, but I thought the team...
Oh, no, you're right, now it stands right here.
The team was actually from New York.
Yeah.
And now we get to play another Southern team tomorrow and I.
There was Supernova S.E. or something from Port Lauderdale.
So that's basically the same little trip to Indianapolis, it would land or it would take
each one time.
I just...
I...
Howard said something to me when I came in, and I just...
I was worried about that last night, because you played teams that are not used to losing.
Poor losers in that team was clearly a poor loser last night.
And the reason one time was so upset about it that he was late to get to his interview
at the end of the game was because he had told his team,
be careful and take yourself back to the bench once you shake hands and they didn't.
They allowed to join the start and then face-to-face, and you know,
coach one time handled it well, the other coach handled it well, and like I said,
I told you what he said when he got to the interview, and he's like,
I had to do what I had to do first guys, I'm a little out of breath, but like I said,
hopefully we took care of this problem.
He said, so many boys are walking to the hotel, so they won't be on my bus.
So, and that's what you want to see from my coach.
You don't want to, I mean, because who's to say it's not going to happen again?
Just saying so, you're playing the depending champion now, and supernova,
are Nova's super easter, I keep saying supernova.
Sound of Nova, Nova's southeastern, it was in my final game Friday night,
8.30, it'll be a Cooper field house, a great place to end up playing,
but the game will be televised.
I'm told this time on ESPN plus, so.
Okay.
Well, I can find it in there.
I can find it somewhere else.
So we'll see, but it was kind of the combination of Grace and Pritzel
and Devon Maze, who, and Maze in particular, just all of a sudden decided,
you know what, I'm going to be one of the leading scores here,
between the two of them, 31 points in the second half, as they rallied to beat
Damon in that one, they also combined for five points in the first half,
but were 11 or 13 from the floor at one point in the second half.
So.
I mean, Pritzel had what, two points in a half comes in a half to one of them,
he has 18 in the second half.
And the youngest kid you're talking about, if he's a, I think he's the ones to
solve more.
I don't think he's depression, but anyway, he saw he was clearly the faster
of any of the point guards on the court, because when he brought it up,
it's like he hit that next year and he knew they were going to have to come
from angles and sides to catch him and he could get in there and he could
body up and he could put the ball up into the basket.
So I mean, certainly played his best game probably other year.
I mean, I think both of those guys are top scores for the team.
It's got the best hair of the group, too, but he's, you know, he's one of the,
he's like a cup with the antennas and stuff like we've been seeing during the
tournament.
So from Beacon, New York, so I'm pretty sure he knew all about this club that
was going up against.
I'm sure.
Yeah.
Like I said, now we get to play somebody else.
I mean, when Omar finally got the boys on tape already, they might be outside
in the heat, watching the tape, but I was, that was what impressed me the most
because I said, you talked to him in one time when we were at Foxon.
You know, I was looking for, for more years, the eligibility for lower being
great with that team.
He's going to play for guys like that.
And like I said, he was, he was mad during the interview.
And I think you got the interview, but he was mad at his teammates for allowing that
team to try to sucker them in to losing players.
And that's clearly what it was.
I mean, it's clear to what it was.
So.
All right.
Well, here he is.
Coach Wontown, a couple of players, the post game conference after the big big
game.
You hear everybody were joined now by a later head coach Omar Wontown, as well as
student athletes, Naval Enveys and Brace Britzel, first off, gentlemen, congratulations
on dancing to the semi-final here two days time.
As we have for the other press conferences, we'll start off with no big statement about
being coach.
They will have a couple of questions towards student athletes after we've had the
question to the athletes.
You guys can go back to the locker room.
We'll go start off with Wontown, the media, all that free and we'll play now.
Coach, you're a big statement.
Extremely grateful for the victory.
Our guys, our guys did a phenomenal job of keeping their heads and keeping their
composure.
We were very, very rattled in the first half just mentally.
We were not locked into the game plan in any fashion whatsoever.
It's a credit to Damon and how they played and how they executed on both sides of the floor.
They got us out of our stuff on the offensive end.
They did some things that were a little different than what we expected on defensively.
So for us offensively and then we were not locked in at all on the game plan on our defensive
side of the ball.
They executed so well, Damon, and made it really hard for us.
That said, second half we came out and we just played with a different mojo and a different
energy.
It started with Nevon right here beside me.
No question.
He's been a heart and soul, along with a couple other guys on this team, but he's a
constant leader for us and he did a phenomenal job really getting us going on the offensive
end, keeping the second half and then defensively as well across the board.
We just played so much better and so much harder and more engaged, more locked in mentally.
Yeah.
I mean, America has gone to the front of four, okay?
Well, that's just really addly.
Yeah.
Raisin, you really started the last one for Land Earth, which he was down five, like six
minutes left.
There's like, you had backed the back three pointers.
So at that point, before you sit your first one, did you feel like any pressure because
you had come back from the halftime that was taking the lead and then falling back by
five again?
What was going through your mind as you were getting ready to take those shots?
You know, it's just like this thought, well, I saw if I want to go home, like, I love
this team.
I love all the guys.
So I'm like, I want this to be our last game together.
So once I had one go in, then hope gets bigger and then just want to keep shooting and
help the team win.
You also, as Coach said, you were getting the shots that were made as you were coming
back and making the thing, you know, couple of three and again, I have some more questions
to you.
Like, when you're feeling like that you had to do something a little bit extra to kind
of give your team the post that you needed.
And I definitely, we need to just come together and be the team that we've always been
the whole year that got us here.
I feel like, you know, whatever we got to do as far as whatever I got to do as far as
our defense, offense, whatever it is, rebounding, guarding the biggest sort of best player,
how to do it, sacrificing myself for this team.
So I just feel like I need to do that.
You know, real quick or maybe on a grace and that seemed to me from what I saw after
that underrated media time out, that was when you got the other day where I think you
had been trailing by five at that point and then from there, I was like, really seem
to think too, David at that point.
Did you really energy shift at that time or was it just kind of the natural build up
without the game would go?
I feel like the energy shifting as soon as we came out in a second half.
I feel like we were just, we, we ain't want to go home.
Nobody want to go home.
We ain't come this far, come this far.
So I feel like that was the mindset we kept going and going and going at them, taking
every punch and giving out every punch or two.
We have to find a score at the time score.
Yeah.
Coach was just saying, like, we're in a great spot.
Like, we played terrible the first half.
I wasn't executing anything and then in the second half, we were keeping it, we made
a little run early.
They made a little run back and then once we made that run, like, we just thought, like,
we got to keep our fun on the gas and keep going and not give it up.
So yeah, definitely changed a little bit, but just because of being stuck with the whole
game.
I mean, everybody had their own relationship, our personal relationship with each other.
We love each other like, like, we was born from the same mother, like, these, I love these
guys.
Like, I love everybody from the coach's staff to team, it is like, we, we've been together
for the two day one.
Ever since we got a year, we chill outside of this basketball stuff, we'll go out to
eat or something, go do an activity or something just to stay together and show us on basketball
career.
All right.
So there you have the post game interview that they had for the sweet 16 or I should say
the elite eight as where it was.
So congratulations said to coach Omar and the players as well as they move on to the final
four in Indianapolis, which should be a fun one.
Again, going to be a late night game.
It's tomorrow night to eight or eight thirty from the Cooper Field House on ESPN plus.
Be ready.
Yeah.
I'll be eating.
Like I said, they had the maze kids at the freezer line.
They say it's a 49% pre-touch and I'm like, that's not very good for a point guard.
There's a different way of scoring percent, just kidding.
Because in division two, he made the first, he made the second, and it wouldn't matter.
But for Dilsky or whatever, he had to miss the one at the very end of the game so that
the clock would run out.
Right.
Well, he said the guy for Dilsky put the shot up and I mean, head top of the backboard
but he still put the shot up.
But all in all, man, huge win for lander, it's amazing to be able to watch somebody local
from here that's been able to get on TV and do their thing and show Omar shows that
he's one of the coaches and they don't get behind like I told Tom, there's one play at
about that five minute mark that we struggle to land or struggle to get the ball in.
So he threw it all back in the guy's leg because he was just wasn't paying on attention.
We tried to do it again and I was like, please do not let this kid in, bounce the ball
again.
Put our guard there and just throw it to whoever and they didn't do it again, the same
guy did it again and just threw it basically in the chest and a landing guy to hit him
right here.
But I guess what the ball being here, this is what happened, that's what I'm saying.
This team was dirty.
They looked at it, called it a common file, which gave lander to one and one at the other
in the court, which really helped them out with the ending of it.
But I guess that you play independent champ now, so it's no easier.
Yeah, it doesn't get any easier with that with Nova, Southeastern coming in.
Of course, Damon had one, what, one of the two of the last three or something of that
nature.
I think this team split that split with them to the other game.
A feature a third seeded Ganon and seven seeded Oklahoma Baptist will play on Friday and
the other semi-final.
The winner gets the face off for the national championship on Easter Sunday as well.
Ganon's for your team.
They played before the end of the last night, so I got to see it into that tip, too.
But like I said, now's when you got to play it, the kids, I mean, I love it the fact
that they love each other, they're ready to go and not really come out of Greenwood.
Without something in their hands, so we all, we're all playing for you, so bringing
home.
You know, you're talking about right there in the end when they were having trouble throwing
the ball in.
I've never understood why teams don't put some of their big men down there, and it's throw
it up high.
Get it in.
I've never understood that they'll have a big man to throw it in, but they won't have
a big man down there to jump up and catch the ball.
Like Pritzler, who can play guard, too, if the big Abertala's guy is, and then the
one that they told about one time, I guess he didn't challenge, but he brought up to
their attention that he should be in the running baseline.
And the rest says, no, no, he's going to be right here, and he's right here, out of
the ball right here.
And he's just in the worst location possible.
So you got two guys breaking to him, and like I said, he just too is hard to hit one
landed guy on the chest, but I agree with you.
A lot of times, you know, you had two guards trying to him land the ball.
I mean, I get that you'd just dump it over to him, and he comes back and gets it from
you and goes, you know, the other way, but that doesn't make sense.
So maybe coach one time, I'm going to put that in for Pritzler.
Pritzler, he's one.
He don't need to take my advice, he's done good all year, so I'm just, I was a suggestion.
I was stunned though, what can he's talking about?
There were a lot of goals underneath in the second half that would just give me.
Throw it to Pritzler, and he just got to lay up right there because I think I had three
goals.
But the Austrian order, his name, Fedoroski, whatever the kid's name was, but both of those
two big guys went at it last night.
They both conceded threes, and like I said, lander to me, I mean, it's not how you win
it is.
You got the last two points that matter the most in the end, so I think you guys got
to see exactly what I've been waiting to watch and saw as that.
This is a team that just loves to run, and I love to play kind of, I don't want to say
it's a set basketball play kind of a thing.
They kind of play it their own different levels.
That was the one thing that the announcer said last night, he said, did they run set plays,
Elan?
I don't think they did.
And he even said, when you said that, I had to bring that out.
I was like, well, they run second half.
They ran a lot of set plays because it was open and it was there.
And it fed into what lander wanted to do and coach one time wanted to run offensively.
So I almost had an old motion offense where you got this total motion all over that place.
So he went baby back to the books too of coach horn.
That's why I was funny.
They were talking to you when I snide on the other one, and they were saying, 1991, I was
like, man, why is that date?
Well, I floated out of Carolina in 1989 and I was back at lander in 1991, so that's the
last time the steam's been on the coach horn.
I forgot that also, but man, it's just this big time.
And like Howard said today, it doesn't matter what happens, what they're going to do.
He's going to do something to honor the steam upstairs.
So I think it's well deserved, so we'll keep rising up for that.
Yeah.
But best of luck in tomorrow, so you can get to that championship game coming up on Sunday.
And no injuries.
That was another key thing in that game, because two of the kids from Damon went out with
early injuries.
I think one was a sprang ankle that was ankle, which is might well be a sprang when you
have high ankle sprain.
It's still a, it's still a sprang.
And on the other side, I think the big guy, I think I saw him, he was kind of living
with maybe back spasms in the game before it.
So I mean, they might not be coming in 100 percent either, but I might like I said, I have
nobody going all the way back to Daytona Beach or wherever they're from, so can we know
he'll in spring.
All right.
So maybe get to order from up there to tape.
All right.
So Nova, South Eastern is known as the sharks.
So we'll see what they had, but they defeated the 10 seed yellow jackets advancing to
their four straight final four in this regard.
So we'll see trying to find a few more details on them.
And Damon's there.
Well, if it is you get it, I had it a second ago, and it's one of those where you click
on the on the tab and it closed out.
We all probably killing you because I got bone open.
I got a tablet.
Yeah.
They've got a, they're on 25 game winning streak as of right now, they're 31 and one over
all.
They were 19 and one in conference play.
So we'll see, but all of their wins have pretty much been blowouts.
They have not, not even been close.
They've gone over the century mark 14 times, there's 15, 15 out of the 31 have been
over.
And that could be, that could be saying something about the level of competition they played
to.
You hate to say that with anybody, but we kind of had a little bit of a discussion about
that before we went on air with somebody's games that we've seen and how, how some teams
get ranked.
And then you look at their schedule and, you know, the YMCA team could be ranked, you
know, if they had to play that schedule, you know, but I think it sets up for one time.
They want it wrong.
The other team came out, tried to set, set it up to a slowed up pace down, but if it's
team likes to run, let's go.
102, Kenny Long, we've got the two.
Well, you don't have to really, you just talking about the now semi, the landed on
running set plays, you don't have to, if you get out there and fast break it, you don't
have to do that.
You know, I go back to what Chris was saying with, with the motion offense, I mean,
it doesn't matter.
You can have set plays coming from out of bounds.
You can have, you know, you guard dribble up and have set plays.
You know, you can call out different things, different signs and all.
But that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to start right then.
You know, you might have all four people that don't have the ball moving in opposite directions
to get to the point where they want somebody and it's not any particular person, but we
feel like if we run this at some point in time, this guy sitting at the corner is going
to be open.
All right, that 45 degree angle, four to three.
He's going to be open because they're going to slouch back or whatever or the big man steps
out behind the three and the other post player says, I'm not going out there.
I'm not a guard.
I'm going to stay in here while it's supposed to be and all of a sudden the guys standing
out wide open knocking down three.
First half, one of the things that gave Damon a big lead in his right off what Stan's
saying there is, he saw where Coach One time had to go to a wee show, three men we eat.
Where you weave it up and down the core with all your guys coming back to help the two
guards play to at least set a pick to move it around.
And there were a couple of times last night.
One of them was very close to being a five.
He didn't get about, I mean, a 10 count, he didn't get it back over because of that.
And they went back and showed it to him to get it about half a tenths of a second.
That's how close it was from being a 10 second call from getting across half court.
They did that well last night.
I'm interested if that's something that nobody's going to take on knowing that Lander likes
to run a lot too.
So yeah, like you said, well, they may want to try to go that, but how many teams can
play a four court press for 40 men?
Exactly.
You might try, but those five starters, if they stay in the ball game by that, by the
35 minute mark in the game, they're going to be wore out.
And I mean, the number of games now is starting to multiply.
So and the days of rest, you're not getting those three, four days rest in between games.
You having to play one game, maybe one day rest and play the next day.
And that, that, aware on you.
I don't care how good the shape you think you are.
What's the leg start going?
The shot start going.
Yeah, I was definitely talking about our last night from Damon.
They got a little winded and they just couldn't finish that game.
So it should be fun to see what, how, what approach they take because, like I said, they're
a fast break team and they like to get it going.
Okay, well, Nova, Southeastern, they're two leading scores are both guards.
Ross Reeves is six, two.
He's averaging right now, 23, almost 24 points a game.
And then Dallas, Grazani is five, eight.
He's a junior and he's averaging 20 points a game as of right now.
The next score they've got is they're forward.
That being Jackson, nap, he is six, seven, and he's averaging 13 and then you got a couple
that are almost averaging nine, including Bennett, Caza and Ryan Davis, who are both big men
underneath as well.
So if you've ever tried to guard somebody that's smaller than you and that has quick legs,
it's like chasing after a toddler, after they've got a couple of months of learning how
to walk.
I was like, personal.
I mean, he does that well and I can tell you, he may use it in my showroom by by himself.
I think he got him listed maybe six, one, but he'll, I say he'll be guarded is the five
eight.
Can I tell you that?
There's one thing when he when he puts that foot, he stomps down in front of you on that
deep inside, you taking you can go around him and leave him, but that's not going to happen
because he will turn his way as fast as he can.
He'll become a charge his late last night because of that.
So really aggressive on the defensive side.
That's another thing that I saw from Lander that, that you know, got them to the win because
I said, first half was hard to watch.
I mean, it was difficult.
I'm like, it's 20 and now she said, you know, as bad as we take Lander's play, the only
two points down or four points down it to half.
I mean, so they're still in this game.
So, and say you have, like I said, I would say it was total domination.
I mean, score tell you otherwise, but well, he was, Tom was then bringing up a stash here
a few minutes, about the two guards right there, laden and scoring.
What's happening, what it seems like's happening to me is that they're throwing it inside
and all of a sudden, they thought it right back outside and they spotting up in their
shooting.
Yeah, the score.
So, Lander's going to have to be real careful about, don't sag too far in there.
Yeah, you want to guard, but don't sag because you letting them guys free and that's what
they're doing.
And that's what it seemed like to me.
And then Tom will take the other guard.
So, you're going to have you, you're going to have maze and Thomas was going to take it
and then that let's, uh, whistle basically run around do what he kind of wants to do.
Probably one of him is, he will get that first file pretty quick into it because he bodies,
he likes to get up and try to block shots.
He isn't getting what I call silly piles when you don't need to, I mean, so.
But like you said, they're a lot further than anybody else thought it'd be this year.
I don't think we came out of the, which kids say they're going to be playing for a natty
at first of the season, course, first of the season, we were still doing some football
stuff.
So.
All right.
Well, best of luck to them tomorrow.
And I should be a fun one and catch you on ESPN plus as they take on the number one
team in division two in Nova, southeastern.
And I'm sure it probably sports break.
I'll have it.
Prager hat last one.
And this, this may be for the championship right here for the most part because you got
a three and a 10 seed that are playing in the other game.
I ate well, one in a six seed.
Yeah.
So we'll see.
And that leads to the big boys, um, sweet 16 gets underway again tonight, seven, 10 first
game.
You've got, uh, coming up is going to be 11, 11, 11, see Texas taking out.
Down the two seed and Purdue and Texas, uh, believe it or not, it's kind of the Cinderella
eyes and 11 seed out of all of this as they had to play in game with, uh, what, NC State
ended up with going into overtime and that one and winning it and overtime.
So they played one more game and everybody else.
Yeah.
I mean, you know, what's the stone has done well taking that job over them?
I mean, they play well, it depends only 21 and 14, but give it to it, Kenny.
That's where they coming from.
So Purdue has been a team that has let me down since Zach Eddie, what three, four, five
years ago, um, you know, nine foot tall, you still can't win games.
And I mean, they're 29 and eight and they know they're playing that big 10.
So I mean, did you be a good match up?
The fact that there's seven and a half points, Fred's scared me.
And so Texas is getting seven and a half points.
I don't know.
They knew that they needed to be honest with me.
I just don't have a confidence in my painters, the head coach of that team.
Well, you know, I picked North Carolina State to beat Texas.
I did too.
I did too.
Yeah, playing games.
So I mean, I took my hat to Texas.
I didn't, you know, I didn't think they would make it this far, but I like, I got to
give them the edge against Purdue.
I would too, because like I said, year 11, seed against a two seed.
My problem has happened.
You know, come up and beat, you know, Michigan and win that big 10.
They wouldn't be a two seed, but, um, another tough game and then the next game is also
big 10.
Well, I'm over here talking about big 12, but I'm losing the teams over here.
Number one, Arizona takes on number four, Arkansas.
That's at 9.45.
Both these games on CBS, by the way.
They are.
And then there's one of the two free all are going to be 17 and 7.30 in Nebraska.
And I, I'm interested to see how well Nebraska plays in this game.
But Horbert, you know, Fred Horbert's back for his like 19, 10 year in Nebraska after
playing there.
And they get a pretty good, I mean, I was a pretty good basketball team.
I still think Clemson should be in that game, but I'm not arguing with the officials.
They don't get that right anyway, but I think they've been better, been a better set up.
Then the 23 into well team against 28 and six.
The two, three matchup with Houston, Illinois, that is going to be fun to watch.
That's your team.
Um, the problem is the fact of the location, um, because they're in Houston.
Um, some of them are in Seattle, they're home and hot, but, um, but I will say this,
if you want to talk about big boys that like the bagging bang, uh, that'd be bruh,
for villains, football team playing basketball now.
So coach, villain has got these guys going in there and they just knocking people out
of the way.
They really, but I think they're again, 23, 12 and 28 and six, you're going to see why
Nebraska's right there.
That's a four seed.
Um, but I mean, that's coming again in a little noise.
I mean, they just bang you, though, they just seven, two, two, one of them, two eighty
five.
And nobody's going to do that against him.
That's, it's a folk mentality with that thing.
Yeah.
And that's what I'm saying.
They're going against what I consider another folk mentality to be in Houston.
Um, never, never, I never have been a fan of him as a coach and, um, and I just, coach
Samson just seems to always recover from mistakes.
I've put him in kind of never caliperi.
He'll do something wrong and then they'll snap him on a hand.
They'll let him come back and do some things.
Um, but 30 and six is Illinois 28, I mean, 26 and eight, that's fairly close.
Um, and I like, I like the fact that the he, I mean, he's just going to give them the
points.
It's going to happen.
That game.
I would almost say, if you really know what you do, take the points and not one.
And then best defense in the college basketball so far is Arizona.
And they're going against an all-offensive team with a cup and, and uh, caliperi.
So I, I kind of like the fact that it's, it's that way, um, and they don't mind as Tommy
Lloyd yesterday.
I mean, you give them almost nine points.
He said, well, give them going to throw another one in there to give them 10.
Um, I think we can play a defense, shut it down.
I think that's what'll beat them.
I mean, because if, if Arkansas with one player really wants to run again, they can't
hang with airs on them, telling you, Kobe Pete, that kid's a man among men.
And he don't mind stepping out, even if you all these huge sets are either.
And his dad was a linebacker.
That's why what the key to Arizona being in Arkansas, they're going to stop their fast
game because that's where Arkansas beats you.
That's what I'm saying.
This is a defensive team.
You're going to have to make them play half court.
Yeah.
And I, if you can't make them play half court, you won't win.
I'm not this one right here.
I'm not worried about Arizona.
Like I said, they play for a third coach.
I don't like Calipari.
No way.
I'm like, Bobby Knight.
I don't like the guy.
I don't like the team.
To be honest with you, I think I said I don't like the conference, but I can be speaking
of while we've got those two games out, because I see the ladies going to start playing
a little bit tomorrow anyway.
Um, weird, weird thing happened.
I told you what it was today.
Um, I saw where, you know, when we were talking about Louis, uh, LSU fire and Matt, my
hands are coached.
They didn't even crazier thing.
They brought back Will Wade from NC State today.
So, I mean, you bring, but he served us for four, four year suspension from midnight to
come back into the SEC.
So could be a good hire.
Kidding on my home, but there was no love loss when he left.
So no, but you know what?
Why he was at doing whatever he was doing.
He was winning.
Hey, what, and that's what he did in NC State.
I mean, and that's what it's all about these days.
He's all about winning.
And I mean, N.A.
Elgman was the cost.
So N.A. Elgman, he can get a lot more lane kiffin and Cruella than he can with NC State.
So, correct me if I'm wrong.
Has the other LSU just turned into the most hated team in all of us?
I've always hated it.
Well, I mean, a lot of it, a lot of it comes from some of the coaches they've had in
the past and it's, it kind of transcends all the sports.
And if you'll watch their football team, watch their men's basketball, watch their women,
they all kind of play with that third mentality.
And it's just like this year's women's team.
I've a great offensive team, but they have no team discipline.
And they don't know how to play defense.
You're not going to need it by not playing defense.
It's just not going to happen.
But all the other coaches seem to be hated in the process too.
Yeah, well, it's just a way to play as representing sales on the court.
I mean, it's just a great thing.
I feel I said direct correlation to the coach.
And she just thinks they're better than everybody else.
Yeah, that's that's the mentality.
Hey, oh, and they don't care how they win.
Long will they win?
Yeah, period.
That's for a mentality.
Yeah, that's what I say.
I don't like it.
And it doesn't matter what sports you play.
Don't matter what I'm getting that in and the fans are the same way.
If you go to the football game, Chris can attest to this.
Go to the football.
You get handcuffed and then go to a basketball game or go to a baseball game.
And you're going to be treated the same way.
I mean, there's no, it's just a crazy world on there.
It's a different world.
That dev alley ought to be burnt down.
I'm just going to say that didn't pay us down there, man.
They need to come up with a new name.
All right.
Well, it's just pointing that out and went down that rabbit.
Well, let's talk about Friday's matchups should be fine in the East region.
You got number one Duke taking on number five, St. John 710 onto CBS channel.
All these games on CBS second game will be number two Yukon at number three.
Michigan State at 945.
I think St. John just got a shot.
I wouldn't.
I don't know if I'd go with Vegas and lace a money on Duke or not.
I believe I'd put my money on St. John's in this one.
This could be the overrunner for the NBA game here.
141 and a half.
This could be a running game.
I just say John's has been strong.
I know the big East only team probably really left for the big.
I got St. John's win in this game.
I do.
I have already straight up.
And the next one worries me at 725 because you got to tell you
that Nate Oaks has brought from nowhere without the Stardom player.
Even for the tournament, he's not going to play the rest of the tournament in Alabama.
I mean, you know,
this to me was the guy was the right guy for the mission in the job.
But I don't know that he wants to play this team here, even without the Stardom player.
And I'm not in the next game.
These I think he's a little lousy.
I think Michigan wins this game.
But I think it's going to be closer than the experts think because Alabama has had
something to play for since they started this tournament called the everybody knows
about the marijuana chart and all this stuff.
So they really want to play well to prove that we can win against anything against us.
So my Michigan, I wouldn't overlook them.
I think Michigan will win in the end.
But it's going to be close.
Well, I think this is Alabama team that played well last year in the tournament.
And a lot of people are forgetting this isn't just a flash in the pan team.
I mean, they don't say this team kind of in the same position last year.
And what I mean is I'm on the chin.
But I mean, you know, he's had player issues down there ever since he got there.
And he's still winning.
And he's still going to win it.
You know, kind of like we talked about with LSU.
And what's that saying?
You always got Chris, the prisoners are running the same side in the mates were running the same sound.
Well, you run long enough.
You're going to get stabbed.
So that's all I tell them they do.
I mean, this is like the third offense in three different championships in three different years.
He's got a player like that.
He actually went in the Murray's my guy.
You know, he's doing everything from Michigan side.
I think another issue where the she was the other she was trying to buy my championship in every league.
Which is in our ill money.
And what's happening is everything else that LSU is suffering besides football, the basketball and all this other stuff.
Well, you may be seeing the same thing with Texas.
So it's well, I have to see what these teams do.
Not only this year, but going forward to next year.
It's going to be interesting.
I tell you what if I'm looking at women's basketball college women's basketball right now.
I think going into next year, I think Caroline is looking good.
Yeah.
And I think Clemson is going to look good as far as
collection.
Oh, I think Clemson has got him a coach that if they give him the help that he needs,
he'll have producer one.
But historically, and we've seen it.
I mean, Clemson has had great women's basketball teams in the past.
But then the coaches, you know, they just get tired of fighting that Clemson football mentality and all that.
They got word by that anymore and go on.
Well, yeah, I'm not going that far.
Yeah, we did.
We I'm just playing spring.
Amy won't go this week.
I'm going to take you to school and as much as we felt for the men's team.
The women's team, I mean, that had to be a shot in the heart.
I mean, the girl makes a three-pointer gets filed on it and they go back and review
and say, no, the ball wasn't out of her hand when the clock is fired.
Yeah, I still can't see when they can see that.
Do these zoom in to the touch or whatever?
I don't know.
That's close.
My problem is it was called a file and then they took the file back.
That's what I don't know that you can do.
She's laying there on the ground.
She got a file, but because it was still in her hands, you don't count that play.
I don't.
They said they said she didn't get a shot off number one.
And then the file occurred after the clock had expired after she had released the ball.
So it was close enough to look at it to see if it left her hands, but it wasn't
close enough to see if she got filed or not.
I saw how many you saw what she got filed, but it was after the clock had expired.
So the game's over.
Right.
And so it doesn't count now.
That's where you know, you a lot of kids say, well, that's where we should go with
this continuation thing.
Even if the clock had expired, she was filed like you say, Chris.
So the file was called, we're going to put her on the line, even though the clock had expired
because technically it was still part of the play.
I still don't like.
So it's probably in like, but I mean, and that's just hard look for both of the Clemson basketball teams this year.
I mean, you can't blame it on the officials.
I mean, you can't, I mean, both teams played, played their hearts out.
But I just had luck.
I had some shot of the officiate number one day.
And that's, and that's that that has remained consistent.
And that's been considered football and basketball.
And now we're going to start seeing balls and strikes.
And you had Chale Hooper get throwed out of ball game.
No, I called it Charleston.
He was letting out.
He was holding something.
No, he, he, that's become one of his repertoire with teams.
Not just playing with it.
I said, he'll get throwed out in the heart of me.
And sometimes that helps you team sometimes it didn't help him.
Maybe I ended up listening to you know, but and and a lot of that can be things.
Let's just say this right up, we don't like replay.
But the balls and strikes camera.
They could use it.
And it would eliminate a lot of that because just like in the coastal Clemson game
the other night, I mean, I felt so sorry for the coastal picture.
I mean, he throwing like nine balls in a row.
And every one of them to me look like now they were a couple that, yeah, okay, clearly off the plate.
But they were a couple that had to be in the black.
And then all sudden the Clemson pictures out there and there's the ball.
It's two foot outside clearly and it gets called strike.
No, that ball was not even close to the strike zone.
Now it was still early in the county.
It didn't matter.
But you know, you're thinking as a coastal player sitting over there and you're seeing that.
And then you're out there and you'll picture it and get in the same pitch called the same way.
It's got to play in the field advantage.
That's right.
But if we had the ball from if we had the ball strike camera, that would eliminate that.
Yeah.
Now this is the second time they played though, right?
Didn't they play early and they play, they play again and it's my in coastal.
Yeah.
And they are tickets available on the berm.
I think that's the only one to the left.
I like that spot to you.
It won't be left long.
No, that was that was seventh inning.
You're up what nine, two, nine, three coastal ends up running off six runs.
They scored another one in the eighth inning makes it eight, nine at that point and then two more in the nine.
I mean, it was, but that's been coastal's mantra.
It's been unreal in a way that they've been able to play the ball.
They, it's just like they wait till the seventh inning to start deciding.
Oh, well, we need to go score a few runs now, guys.
That's crazy to do by the way.
Yeah, that's a crazy schedule.
They played everybody important, plus they beat way forward.
So I mean, I mean, midweek games and they gave North Carolina all they can handle.
And we got to remember this is all without their number one relief pitch.
He's done for the year and without fluky there technically their best picture.
That was up for picture of the year in college baseball and he's still injured.
He's still not pitching yet.
So, but we've just done a great job with those freshmen.
I said, don't put a touch.
Nobody would put a salary, but another dollar by his name, maybe more than one.
Well, I was going to say because we're talking about that a little bit,
but the game we want to talk about is the big game to come on tonight is Mississippi
State and Connecticut.
They played twice, of course, because they played in the same conference.
Had it not been for Reed, Jr.
Berman had that game one, but you put the one guy down there.
It's like 6'11 and 285 and they just let him push everybody else around.
I mean, but he's not going to be the push figures around because this is the
freshman that was from Oklahoma that Tom is a man.
I didn't think Tom.
He didn't care about, he's kind of like Sabin, too.
He don't want to deal with no portal, but he goes up and home and gets a freshman
of the year in the SEC and Jamal fears.
And I see you're going to see tonight match up, both are my double, double machines.
And Connecticut does have the kid they stole from Georgia, which hurt George
in the tournament.
It didn't mean they lost, but in Denver.
But this is the game I was telling you about.
It's a one and a half point spread.
And I tell you, if you want another deep entertainment team, it's really good.
It's Michigan State.
And you talk about Hurley, you know, two previous national championships,
but poor Florida got on the run, is of had them all the time.
He was going against the Duke of North Carolina to win in championships.
And so if he could sleep by this game, they're in good shape.
But I have there again, actually 9.45, game time here.
I know you probably just know that you let him know what happened.
And then the last game of the night is Tennessee and Iowa State,
which I think another big 12 SEC game.
Because Tennessee's really come from the sixth to really put it out there.
I mean, Rick Barnes.
I mean, what can you say, what else can you say about him?
I mean, he wins this year.
You could definitely say, and I mean,
particularly in crunch times like this.
He hasn't had the best of luck with players and injuries, either.
And yet they're still there against Iowa State.
So I like I would say they're not going to get defensive to him, but.
But it all goes back to can he win the big one?
He hasn't been able to do it anywhere he's been.
You know, so he won't win it this year either, but he's done a pretty good job.
So far for this point.
I mean, he's winning ball games, you know, but.
The highlight for it, saying he did that on his said, Rick Barnes is the most
underrated coach in basketball because he can't win the big one.
So I might be the pressure he needs.
He just every time I look at he and I look at at like Caliper and patina.
I'm like, man, he's got like walking death.
But if you think about it, they're not young bucks anymore.
I think we, I think we talked about Rick Barnes last time that show I was here.
He's 72 years old.
I mean, you think about when he was at Clemson, what, 25 years ago, he was a young guy.
And think about where Clemson's program will be right now.
Rick Barnes was still at state at least 10 years, 15 years.
But the school, the school system was terrible in South Carolina.
That's why we went to Texas.
That was his excuse anyway.
I'm glad you took that one.
Well, it's why I thought you is why I didn't want him wife, right?
And he's a no-kill ally guy.
That's where he's from.
My house, something started up.
I can't even my house started.
That'd be fine.
Oh, they call me already.
Look at it.
See that.
That's that lady from the house, the lady again.
She wants my number.
You've been hanging out with Chris Reman.
I was, I was, I was, I was probably jumping on that.
And I was like, man, I ain't going to let the man hang by himself.
I'm the one to hate.
Let me don't get into this conversation too.
All right.
Another big game ended up happening last night.
About 730, it got underway.
That was Clemson, South Carolina, and softball ended up being the run rule.
Eight and nothing in six innings of play to go along with this one.
So we were expecting more out of South Carolina in this regard mainly
because of what they've done the last couple of weeks.
I mean, they started out kind of slow.
But last couple of weeks, they've been in a plan pretty odd.
They came in, like I said, it's another situation because you got Clemson
this new to the basketball scene.
You got any base, I mean, softball coach with actually this there.
And I mean, they, what went on last year's kind of a, I'm not going to say
disappointment this year because you're just getting ready to start your play
in conference.
And she knows all about that too.
So yeah, but I was chopped by the score.
I will say that.
Yeah.
Sierra Manus, Manus, Manus pitched her ninth complete game, striking out four,
allowing only one walk and four hits throughout the night.
So she improves the 14 and three overall with her fourth solo shot out of the year.
And then offensively, Julia, dollars, um, she led the Tigers with three hits
and two RB eyes.
Knowledge can hear it.
She got the knowledge with the plate because she took a walk to that was that I
couldn't have took the pitch because it was a three to and she took it out like,
ooh, but she walked it.
So I don't know.
I ain't a whole lot you can say about this game Clemson this took care of.
I'm behind the wheelchair and this kind of took care of business.
I mean, that's all you said.
I watched it up until he takes me to the lanterns back on.
I had to find it then.
So I left Lou Lou to stay on Lou Lou.
Um, but I mean, you expect that though.
I mean, it's, like I said, third or fourth of the year now Clemson's had a
softball team every year.
They haven't been better every year.
I mean, first year wasn't great.
Second year, third year, you're, you're in a conference making moves.
And then this year probably the same thing.
I mean, this could be a, this could be a pretty good girl.
Same per Clemson coach is doing wonders up there.
And I, and where do you go if you are actually?
I think we play a Mississippi state this week, uh, something like that.
It don't get any easier.
That's what I'm saying.
And she don't expect it to be any easier.
So I mean, Clemson's got Florida state.
So we'll see how that goes.
And that should be fun because I mean, Florida state girls are guys.
They've always been really good.
So she'll be a fun time.
We'll see how it goes.
I'm glad to see girls.
I'll just, I mean, just high school and college.
I love it.
I mean, I'm glad it's doing what you're doing.
What I'm going to tell you right now, yeah, you know better than you than no.
Only I can tell you for that.
I mean, I know it stands down there coastal and all.
And we got, we got the founders part.
But I mean, you go over here on any given day and there's softball and baseball at
same time being played, maybe different times.
But and you can just sit there and enjoy every bit of it.
Speaking of which, we've probably got one of the best softball coaches in my
opinion, the state of South Carolina playing up at Dixie, um, coaching up there.
Samantha has done a fantastic job.
We thought she was going to get that we were hoping that she would apply through
the American Legion post 20 softball coach and job that they were looking for.
But maybe that'll come a couple of years down the road.
I thought she's still a little young for that, I mean, the players though.
I mean, she's a player's coach.
She's a player's coach and, you know, if you haven't been over there, we're
talking about the venues that that we have.
And the Lakelands area is tremendous with venues they got.
Go out to Greenwood High and look at their girls softball players.
You know, go here and look, go there.
You want to say, go over to Dixie.
They just completed their renovation on that stadium.
I mean, it's a beautiful stadium right there on the school grounds.
But that's a tribute to Samantha and the work that she's put in.
I mean, she left Dixie when she graduated and four years later, she was back.
And she was coaching.
They hadn't let off the gas yet.
I think that was a great also today, A.D., which you know very well, because you think about it.
The football fields, what they've done to it, baseball field has totally been revamped also.
And I hadn't been inside the gym, but if you kind of pass that little gym,
that little weight center that they call the field house is really nice to be at Dixie.
So I think it's not really just saying what she's done, but the amazing thing they've done
across the board. A lot of schools need to take a habit they did financially if it was like
greenwood budget things. Most of your schools need to do that now, because I think workshops
is probably one of the older schools now in the late months. It's not going to be too much
longer. They don't want some changes up there. Schoolwide, especially.
Yeah, well, let me tell you about this Dixie squad because these girls are tough.
They're seven in one record as of right now. They're one in one in region play.
But guys, these are the teams that they've played and beat, okay?
They beat Daniel 9-7, Pendleton 8-7, easily 17 to 12. That's a 5-8 school, folks.
Powder'sville, a 3-8 school, 12-7, Pendleton again, 8-3.
Strong Thurmond, they beat 10-6. Abbeyville was a tough one. I was a 2-1 win.
And then the lost Whitmer was 4-3. That was there. And then I did get the Thornwell score
that they played earlier this week. That was just last night.
Yeah, I don't have that one.
But then we're Shoals tonight, 5 o'clock at our Shoals.
But that's, you know, and then then everybody wonders, well, how does Dixie end up going so far
in the playoffs every year? Well, look at this pre-region schedule that they play.
How many 1-8 schools going to take on 5-8, 4-8, any and all comers? We'll play, we don't get.
And we're not coming just for the hot dogs. We're coming for the one-yes.
And they got a double-header Saturday coming up against D.C. Flora.
Oh, yeah, yep. So. Another poor.
I applaud it, man. I might stand. I applaud the schedule being like it is.
And I think that'll help them get where they need to be down.
But when we're last year going over and watching those tournament games, which is always fun to go.
Well, you know, you can only get better by playing better competition.
You can coach them up all you want to. But if you play a weak competition,
you're going to get a weak effort in the end. And when you have to play these teams and
you've gotten to mindset that you want to win, number one. I mean, these girls go into these games.
We're going to win this ball game. They don't go in there. Well, we just going up here to get a paycheck
for the school. So we can have nice uniform and a nice no. We want to win.
That's right.
That should be fun. But yeah, I love the way that she interacts with her team.
Have you look at how have you got a roster that's got the, um, let me look.
They were real young last year. And I think they're still going to be, I don't think they lost too
many seniors last year. And some of the seniors weren't even. Yeah, she didn't have the roster posted.
Yeah. And last year they were playing some seventh and eighth ninth graders. And went all the way to
the upper state. I'm up there to play for sure. They beat Lamar. And then they had to go on the
road to what Lewisville last year after that. That's when they lost. That's what they lost. Yeah.
Well, they beat Lewisville beat them once and then that beat Lewisville. And then they had to go
to the rubber game at Lewisville on a Saturday morning at like 12 o'clock. I mean, it was a ridiculous
time. It's early. And I went, I said, this is, and the, and the umpire, you talking at home,
cooking the first base umpire, he's sitting there. He's looking at his watch over three seconds.
He's wanting to get out there. So he had something else to do that said. He didn't want to be there
calling no girls off ball game. Yeah. He shouldn't have signed up. That's when they play a lot of time. Yeah.
Now I'm not saying that's what cost the game. I'll admit Lewisville beat them. But
there was some questionable calls that dumb powers made that kind of make you shake your head.
But hey, if you're going to get a chance, go up there and see Coach Samantha Ferguson coach her
Dixie Hornets against the Hornets of where you're going to be going on. And that kind of
leads me to the game that also happened last night out at John Aves Stadium at Legion Field.
They had a big game that ended up happening. Saluda came up. It was supposed to be a game of
it's going to take place at Emerald a home game. They moved it over to Legion Field. And this one
was back and forth for the most part. Saluda jumped out there three nothing lead in the first
inning. Greenwood or Emerald comes back in the second and the third ends up going up. I think
it was six three at that point. And they scored three more in the sixth inning. And then all of a
sudden Saluda comes up with a six run seventh inning much like Coach did against the Tigers of
Clemson. It's an eight nine game. And that's where it remained through the final two innings. So
but like Kenny was saying what a great atmosphere for those two high schools to play at. And of
course we're going I know y'all will as it gets drawing closer and closer to the 85th consecutive
year. And I'm hoping that this time we'll get behind this Legion program.
Gonna be fun. I'm hoping that tied. I'm hoping that that's why he's
playing some of these high school games out there at the stadium
to give those guys a sense of the history of baseball that's in this town.
I think they all play a few games out there a year. I ain't saying don't play all of them out there
because they don't play in home but he's like Greenwood. Hannah has used the pretty good
baseball team. Play it. Play it. Play it. Hannah and everyone one night. Even if Friday night
if you've got a three game set with them which a lot of our two games set that they're doing now
like you say play the Friday game out there or the Saturday game out there.
You know they had a nice crowd that last night. That was a good crowd. Good crowd.
Yep. Bowheight started ended up pitching three innings in this one. Ethan Metz comes in
and relief ends up pitching in any there and then Colson Marino comes in and does what he does best
and that's close things out. He ends up getting the save in the process as well with another two
innings pitch that were there. But you know with Colson do's just unreal not only on the mound
but also what he's able to do at the plate and able to hit in that regard. Eli Swanson also
awesome two of three four RBI's had a double that was in there Matthew Ritter. Tall stringy
kid but boy can he wall up a baseball. That's usually ones it can. He had a big night in the
process as well going two for three in the process there too so. Seven boys playing home.
I know Eli Swanson has been on that Legion team for a long good many years. Swanson is a great
catcher too. I mean there's nothing got by him all night long.
So and the same as about Saluda they've got a pretty good catcher too and he leads off
and off that third inning and he hit one that went deep into left field and ended up hitting the
back fence before it fell down having to go back there and get it and they walked in the second
time he came up. Third time he came up ended up being a double. I mean the kids can just slam
the football when he gets up there to bat but he's another one of those pitchers too he threw
us out at second base twice so. Of course I'm returning a big double play right there
down in the game. They did. They kind of sealed it for them. They're deep and it's going to be
pretty good on the side of it if the pitching can hold up so. I'm not sure to pretty good team.
By the way the second baby just made an error a couple played before that and that guy hit it right
to me. It's little one then got it flipped into the second base name and it's obvious the
batter was kind of a slow runner now but still it was a heck of a play. Well we're just a turn
of double play. I mean it's tough. People don't realize how tough it is. I mean the pros make it
look easy but it's not a lot of time and involved in it. And Saluda's got two guys in the outfield
Jeremy Williams is one of them and he had a chance at the end of the end of the seventh to actually
because he had been hitting all night long and he's extremely fast in the bath pass. We couldn't
get anything by him out there in center field. I mean all night long he was running things down
for the most part. So they've got two speedsters that are on that group they're going to go
far for. Two A school they've got they got a pretty good team. They play a lot of games outside
with the region areas too. I'm probably playing AC four a couple times too but it'll be fun to see
like I said. Well Emerald's on their way down to take on Hilton Head on Saturday and they had
just found out watching Emerald's Viking baseball and Facebook and get a lot of details on what
the team is doing. Their first stop on their way to Hilton Head. It took them to USC Scala Hatchee
and they went and they took in a college softball game today and then baseball practice in the
process as well. They also got the opportunity spent some time with their head coach Jeremy Joy
who shared a lot of the insight on what his university has to offer and spoke to the team about
what he calls the Cape Up mentality which is above the step up mentality. If you're going to be
into playing here you got to wear a cape. You got to be a Superman. You got to be good at your
position. They went to Walter Burrow. It's what you're trying to say. USC Scala Hatchee. Yeah and then
they went and bluffed and they got a Hilton head. I don't know if y'all know this is a lot of
topic but Coach Liner has been doing the traveling. Yeah I was just looking at that. He went to
a university Tennessee to talk with Josh Hyple. I guess watching the Spring Brighters and then he's
went to East Tennessee State University so hopefully he's figuring out something. Well he's just
showing you. He doesn't know people. He's been telling us for a year. I know people and I
think it was at those stops right there and just about to mid mid you know time of a year that
you're allowing these teams to come up there and take a peek at what's going on. I love it.
I love that aspect of it. Well it shows you he wants to learn the game and find out how other
successful coaches and programs are being run and that's what he wants to run his program. Now
long the way he's probably got a buddy at some high school up in Tennessee. Well the next thing
you know we ride. The rain would high maybe on this way the Knoxville you know. Well you're
riding. Well it says right here Union Yellowjacket legend Derrell Sims.
The play for Union Hunt. He's running the basketballs at Tennessee. He's pictured right here
and of course you got to have contacts through that but what people don't realize about high school
coaches. A lot of them travel to different colleges every year to figure out what kind of offense
you run if you got something in mind and like like Stan said about how to run a program. So
and I'll be honest with you if he could ever pull that job's high school offense off
it's hard to defend because I like the offense he runs at Tennessee. Well it's a spread
offense but unlike a lot of coach a lot of programs that run it high school takes it to the
extremes. He'll have wide receivers lined up on the boundary on both sides I mean he's spreading
when he says spread the field he's making you cover every inch of the width of that field.
Yep and that's hard to do. You give me just high boys my offense coordinator and then
Brent Venable is my defense coordinator. I'll beat you 9 out of 10 times.
They still waiting on the team. Can you go volunteer for him to still waiting on him to get that
offense right. So it's not going to be a liner liner make it a dreamer boy gets it at Tennessee
because it is so complex. Well coach let me ask you something while we're talking to Legion.
What are you are you going to become a flying monkey fan? Not that you know what we're talking about.
Do you have any idea what we're talking about? Not really.
Now in your turn we got a collegiate wooden bat league team that's coming to Greenwood called
the flying monkeys. The Greenwood flying monkeys. Yep. So we've got a head coach already in there.
We've got three players including Jeremy Woodson. Woodson I'm sorry over at Erskin. He's the left
handed pitcher that's going to be playing. Well you know a lot of a lot and that's what a lot of
people around this area don't understand is that a lot of these lander players I know when my
nephew played in Anderson every summer he was going up North you know end of Virginia.
Keep caught. Keep caught there. Playing in these wooden bat leagues and that was just an extension
of his coaching or whatever you know and then when he comes back in Anderson and the fall
he's ready for fall ball I mean because he's been playing all summer he's in shape he's learned more
he's you know his technical part of the game is a lot better his mental part of the game is a lot
better so it does help him but you know we've never had anything close around here.
Now since the days I think it's going to be good but but we're seeing more and more of these
college athletes during their offseason going to professional teams professional programs and
working out with maybe the weight coach or the shooting coach or the batting coach or the
pitching coach you know the quarterbacks coach when when available and it's it's not
just go to a camp like you do in high school and you probably you know I'm going to go down here to
Carolina camp or I'm going the best punting camp is over here at the University of Tennessee that's
for him. How's this? I don't have to get me a T-shirt like that. That's it. They got the jerseys out
there 35 downwards. I mean I hate that's a cheap price. You're right that's wrong. I'm telling you
you walk in the coastal store at Broadway or in Conway and they're laughing at you when you tell
you want to come to baseball jerseys for 35 hours. But looking forward to flying monkeys coming
and they're going to be sharing the same field with with post-20 Legion field so Legion field gets
or I should say post-20 gets the right to play where they want to first and then
and that would get for the collegiate guys. Yeah I mean I saw that's a typically that is a
prostate him. I mean it was redone when the braze first came here all those years ago and so
it's not your typical high school baseball stadium. And if you go out to that partner you've got
lines in parking. Oh that reminds me don't even get me started on that parking lot. No that they
read they read lines on it but the fire department was out there yesterday. Well yeah they got
and you tell a truck name using that parking lot. I got out there earlier just make sure
everything going and stuff. I must have spent 20 30 minutes just watching them try to back that
thing up and pull around and stuff. It's quite unique that back driver what he has to do. Well
they've got what it is they just got the truck so they've got six people that they're
teaching how to operate it so they can teach the rest of them. They got one guy from that came
out of Seattle and the other one's out of Texas to come in and teach this program to these guys
how to do it and I talked to one of them this morning he says the front driver he's got to know
what he's doing and the back driver's guy know what front driver's doing the front driver's guy
know what the back driver's going to do. But you got two steering wheels in this truck. Yeah one on
the front one on the back. Don't sign me up for it then. But they had the drones out over the top
of them and they had a little obstacle course that they had to run through and stuff. It was it
was fun to watch them and you could tell they got frustrated when they had a reverse. Oh yeah
and I mean took some of them three four tries to get it in. Well they just and it's just
like this morning when I was talking to him. It was it's crazy. They said you know they've driven
the other trucks into big lighter trucks and all of you know this is a total different beast.
Everything you thought you knew thought I'd have to win. So we're starting all over. Yeah
so it's yeah but they you need to where else could you practice but out and in that parking lot
there. I was talking to them. They were going to be practicing again today. Now today he said they
thought they may be going out and riding some of the streets just to see okay how would you make
this left hand turn. How would you make this right hand turn with that brick wall right there
in you and this is basically a single lane route. How are we going to show me how to teach me how
to do this. It's a lot different when you've got curves and when you've got calm marks. I'm like
Kenny I'll see you in the truck I watch. Now what what is the purpose of the truck stand. What is
the purpose of having this truck here. The aerial device is just I don't know. I mean we've
been from Starras but it has to be in these bigger parts. Yeah I didn't understand it when
they bought it especially for a city the size of Greenwood and I could say Columbia is Greenwood
Charleston. No right price though. They just you know but I mean you know time will come that they'll
need it. Y'all feel sure but they got a deal on it for what I read. They got a pretty good deal
but still now you got the train and instead of like with the old air devices if you had two three
people you had one that drove it and operated the ladder and the other two could fight fire.
You got two now that's got to drive this truck. You got to have two people
to drive or it's not leaving the station and you know if you don't ask somebody there you know
don't be interested. We'll be in the front don't put me in the back. I just want to ride in the
past. I'll send them back for that one. Yeah I'll send them back. Well I thought I said well
I might try to run out and see if they're out at the city center because they told me that's
what they were right. Well I might ride out that said no. If I ride out there it's going to be so
tempting for me to say hey let me have a shot at this. Let me show you how to do it and make
a fool out of myself. Well one of them was kind of telling me what it is and they've got it set
up so that the direction you want to turn is the way that the steering wheel turns but the wheels
turn the opposite. When you drive that back. That's wrong leg Danny. So if we go in this way we've
got to turn it back this way. Yeah. If you want to go right you turn it last. If you want to go left
you turn it right. It's crazy. It is insane to watch but they were getting through the obstacle.
Really great it was just that backing up portion that they were having a little trouble with.
That'll come with practice and I'll just have to get another do it. I don't know very often
where they're going to have to back up out at anything like that. Well you'd be surprised on some of
the some of the streets especially in the older parts of Greenwood and I asked what a lot of people
don't understand is you get on some of these especially like some of the mill villages and all
streets are so narrow anyway but then you get people parking the car and the street you've got
signs everywhere you know children playing speed limits stop signs and there's no room to put on
me and they got fire hydrants and everything it's trash can sitting everywhere and you got to get
you got to get that big truck between them two cars it's not going to fit you know
hmm of course they were giving him a hard time about we just don't take it to the airport
yeah that one that that parking lot's a little tight for that truck
well they were talking about the runways oh the runways because we have done
the the emergency vehicle driver training out there at that point oh if you get on that taxi
way they're even smaller yeah but it was fun watching I enjoyed watching it's a fun new truck
fun they're doing that they get to play with we'll see but it is but they do a lot of great work
with it I hope they'll get a chance to we'll get to see it in a few parades things of that
as it comes around all right do my missing anything we got anything Chris I've already got
the LSU job it's already complete he's already got his money in the back all right what about
North Carolina their coaching search you said you had three coaching candidates now I have one
now you're down the wall he's more into it than I was today I mean yeah I still think
are I still know that Billy Donovan loves to college game my questions for you today because he's
stuck with the bulls right now he's been there for a couple years now his name would be the first
when I would call yeah yeah Billy Donovan I'm talking about the Rick the head coach now from
Florida oh yeah they told my maybe golden I think he likes just the challenges of being where he's
at I like that and yeah believe it was a really good guard for the Toriel's way back I'm not
I'm not to Willie where I got a high-old dude guys I don't want to be that university it does that
but there's one it was the prize you because I'm really thinking he's close to really retiring
getting out of the game that has health issues they played in the tournament this year and I
spill self and the fact of making the statement on after the game the other night about
is it time to hang it up or is it time to get close to home and I was the state and made after
Arkansas beat him in a really good basketball game I just I I never thought that will wave
whenever go back telling you but he just did today he said well I don't think Bill
said for he might move back to knocking out but I don't think he would coach I think his his
coaching legacy is gonna be the job he did at Kansas and he understands that and he don't want
to turn it should I think he's got more serious issues and he's letting on and yeah I don't
know if he's got cancer or what's going on but he's you know you don't get put in the hospital
two or three times during the year and have to miss a game you know because of some I don't think
it and you leaving Kansas got an ortho Carolina I don't think so I wouldn't but that's just my opinion
and the next question would be from North Carolina are they going to hire somebody from outside
the family that's right or are they going to keep it inside the family I want it outside
a lot you know there are two different trains of thoughts on that and one of them is if we
hire within the family they know what's expected you know they know to lay it on land so to speak
but who are you going to hire well I'mma who are you going outside the family though and it's
that's where you have change that's where you have kind of shuffling of everything and that can
be good or that can be bad when you start changing things well I think in this aspect I think it
might be good they step outside just a little bit and then get some fresher ideas or get some of that
still do the tradition and stuff people to know it but you still got to have some fresh ideas
it's kind of like when saving a step down at Alabama they went outside the family I mean they
went way outside the family yeah a lot of people still question that too a lot of people are
questioning it but to come in after saving I think the man is going to put a good job I mean
well and he's running a but we all know he's running a whole different scheme he's running practice
totally different he's not the disciplinary I mean this is night and this is day with that and will
it work we'll see now they tried it with the women's basketball at Tennessee and it didn't work
so you know there's pros and cons both ways you know when you even when you you're going anybody
that was going to go take that job at the Sabin was going to be up on their markets go well they
didn't wait coach Sabin did it well he's not coached Sabin yeah just like a pastor yeah preach the
sand with Abner Moore for 30 35 years okay so Oz was going to tell you whoever they hired
to be the pastor that wasn't going to make it about five years and same thing here the boys
there what five years already he's been there five years yet I don't think he's been there four
years three three four years now I think he'll be lucky to make it five years if he don't hurt
or start doing something because I'm telling you right now but that's the whole thing that that
goes back to what are your expectations well expectations on the Sabin was we're going to win
national championship expectations under the board do we do we say okay we're going to give him some
time but let's win a SEC conference you know let's get if it's just making the playoffs the way
the playoffs are being done now make the playoffs win a game or two is that okay or is it still
we expect a national championship every year playing for it and hoping is
two total different beasts yeah I mean whoever took that job was going to be compared to Sabin
and it ain't fair but it all comes down to that bottom line and that money how much money
the program bringing in now have we still got those two hundred million dollars to the football
program every year or has that number started dwindling or because the ball came in that number
went up because the way Sabin might have treated somebody didn't give them the same treatment he
gave to this other guy over here that was the more time being there I'll be right
honest where I think it's going up everywhere we're doing I owe money and stuff oh it ain't no doubt about
it all right we're in Howard done man in uptown Greenwood beer ad has got the happy hour getting
geared up and getting ready for we've got a band that's getting ready to come on here as well for
tonight so you guys get out here joy some live entertainment the process of all of that got the
coldest beer in town when I've been told I can't get one well that's because you got the bottle
of the other stuff there's a motor vehicle it's the hardest thing over here you don't want to go
I usually break a new dude his found a way Caleb Ballsford will play in this game against St. John's
oh we will so that's what just broke that's for Willie so he don't take me 85 times also the
collegiate wooden bat new team up in well that's ours but we got a rival to the north now in
Spartanburg Spartanburg peaches are going to be a new rival me right won't be happy with the
peaches they can I tell you Spartanburg already got the whatever was up there already I didn't take
something from the strong learning down that way yeah I did stand thanks for coming in coach
joining us stands by me that's Kenny full off you be number one Christian I'm time
care where the lake the sports guys enjoy the games folks
