Hello, and welcome to the rest of his football with my career to challenge here at me,
Gary Linnicka, on this week's episode of Premier League Greats, the moments that made them
we're talking about.
The player actually only had three and a half seasons, 110 appearances in the Premier League,
which is a sign.
The fact that he's got in this series is a sign of his greatness as a footballer in many
ways.
It's his son, Luis Suarez, who, Michael, you would have played again.
Yeah.
Everybody.
I'm the only Olympian here.
So you might as well talk about that.
Oh, you played against him.
I'm Olympian.
I Olympix 2012.
Where's the medal?
Cleansie.
He shows.
You know, medal.
I've got injured.
Uncle.
We're going to watch.
Otherwise.
I mean, I'm just getting him out of the pocket here, Suarez and Cavani up front, no problem
at all.
Me and Stephen Corker, at the back, dealt with him.
Cleansie.
Cleansie.
Although, there was a moment.
What kind of moment?
I got twisted up.
I got twisted up.
It's just, you know that thing that he does, it looks like he's going to shoot and he chops
and he chops again.
He chops again.
And I was just all over the place.
Yeah.
What Corker saved me.
Cleansie.
Well done.
He did have that ability, Suarez, didn't he?
That he'd almost try and run through players and often it would pay off.
You know, he'd go for a little nutmeg and he wasn't one of those that just go and play
safe.
He took chances.
There were times where he used to think he's actually got lucky, but he did it so off
in that it was not.
It wasn't luck.
It was actually incredible ability.
It wasn't the way he ran with it and he came out of the right side with the ball.
Yeah.
My parents is 69 goals and 23 assists.
PFA team of the year twice and football of the year, 2013, 2014, just the one lead cut,
obviously Liverpool.
They went very close, didn't they, at that point, but I remember, funny enough, we went
to Amsterdam with Harry and about, I don't know, a year or so before they signed Suarez,
Liverpool signed him.
We went to watch this game.
It was Ix against PSV and they had this little fella up front Ix and we were both going,
oh my God, how good he's here and it was Suarez before he was, and then they'd go in,
didn't they time field, never once goes mid season, wasn't it?
I think I'm right in seeing, was that, was that, this got the Torres morning and then
they brought in Andy Carroll and Louis Suarez, wasn't that what I think?
I think Suarez was probably slightly the better player.
Yeah.
So, and we thought, and then he came to the Premier League and he was even better than
he looked on that occasion, so many amazing, amazing performances and I think it was one
of the best ever seasons and we were having a little bit of discussion here because it actually
features you, Alan, because in the 2013, 2014 campaign, he scored 31 goals and 12 assists
in just 33 appearances, that free kick being one of those goals.
But it is, Louis Suarez, it's around the wall and it's brilliant!
We had a real incredible range of goal scorer and didn't it?
31 and 34.
31 goals in 33, 12 assists as well, and did not take one single penalty and Stephen Gerard,
who was of them penalty, take for Liverpool, scored 10 penalties.
Imagine if he'd been on penalties, he could, he would have gone, well, good maths,
like, I'm not going to be up, you might have missed two, you know what I mean?
So it was a 39.
Yeah.
Or if all there might have been a couple of penalties in the games when he was injured
and didn't play.
So, but it would have, it could argue, it was one of the best seasons ever.
By comparison, Gerard Henry had 30 goals and six assists in 2003 for Ronaldo, of course,
when he won the Ballon Dull with 31 goals and six assists.
The Harlan's first season, 36 goals and eight assists, Salar in 2024, 25 got 29 goals
and 18 assists, and Alan, yours, 95, 96, 31 goals, 7 assists, but a lot of them did
have a number 34 and season before, I think, about these 42 games, I think, you can find them.
Oh, right, does I not count them, no?
It's an extra four games.
Well, it's unfair advantage.
It's got an extra four games to score goals, of course, it's going to look better.
Yes, so it will just go back to him 31 and 32, he's amazing.
What's extraordinary, though, is also Mr. First, five matches through suspension, which
is extraordinary.
I always also think, I mean, I thought it was unbelievable, a finisher and player, an all-round
thing.
He, what do we've had three and a half seasons and took to make the impact he did, even
though they didn't quite get over the line to win a title, did they?
With sterling, with storage.
What is Daniel, when you're good pals with him, what does he say about him?
He must have, like, was incredible.
I've got to be careful how well this, because Daniel was, for he was the main man, you
know?
He thought it's better than to have.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, I don't think he's there, he just was like, well, that's
okay.
I can't believe in you, shall I?
Well, Suarez was just a different level, wasn't there?
I mean, them three up front, they had everything, pay skill, football intelligence, finishing
as well.
But they didn't win the league.
So you know when you mentioned that list, you know, that's what asked you, when you scored
them goals, 31, did you win the league?
Season 94, 95, we won the league, yeah.
Yes.
So the season before you scored 31, that's when you won the league.
That's when you won the league.
So you didn't win.
So yeah, it's not as good as well.
Well, we had 42 games, 42 games, yes, 34, what do you mean, it's not a good, the fuck are
you going on about?
Because he tried to do like that, the goals per game, but so the season when he won the
league, he scored 34 goals, but he had 42 games.
Yeah.
So the season when he scored 31 goals, he didn't win the league, so you're irrelevant.
Moving on.
I don't know.
I need to call a break at this point.
This episode is powered by Fuse Energy.
Before we kick off, a quick, pretty much warm up from Fuse, one question, four options
and two contestants.
Today's a little question for you, Lads.
Which goalkeeper has the most clean sheets in Champions League history?
T.A. Iker Kessias, B. Gianluigi Buffon, C. Manuel Noia, or D. Edwin Van der Zah.
Manuel Noia for me.
You know what, I'm going to be different.
I'm going to go Buffon.
You're going to go Buffon.
Yeah.
Well, Micah, that was not correct.
The answer was one, Manuel Noia, Alejandro please.

So going back to the point I was saying, they didn't get over the line with Liverpool.
If they would have won the league, it probably worked down as the greatest season, I would
say.
Yeah.
If, but if, and if, and there's where there's an if, I think we can have a discussion.
If it wasn't the best season ever, we can certainly have a discussion because we had
it didn't wait a few weeks ago when we talked about Dennis Bergkamp's hat trick.
That's the best hat trick ever in the Premier League and I would argue that it's this one.
This is by far the best story city, I mean the first goal is extraordinary.
This was probably the simplest of goals, even though that's not easy.
Look at the technique though, and the strength.
This one here is just ridiculous, that little, he's thinking he's going to shoot it there
and then at that marker, it's a half way, watch this Mike, look how it just bounces on
the floor and it's on the wheel half fully.
That's a half fully and that is a free kick.
Look at the technique, that's a half fully, Michael.
Yes, that is the whole point because it bounced, it's a half fully.
Can we go now back to the second goal from the corner?
Okay.
Here we go.
Well, how do you describe this one?
Half fully.
That is not.
What do you call that?
I call that a shot.
Okay.
Okay.
But if it's anything, it's more of a volley than a half volley.
You made the point when it's going up off the floor, I'll give you that.
But then you made a point, last time we was talking about this, it depends where it is.
If you look when the corner comes in, it's about the same height, so it's caught to be
a half volley.
It's just a shot.
It's just a shot.
It's ridiculous.
It's a bloody good shot.
You know, it's not a half volley.
You know the last argument we had, 70% of the people agreed with me.
70%.
Get the pull out.
Hey, John, Johnny Boy.
Get the pull out.
52% of this country votes you for Brexit, mate.
All right.
For us.
I'm going to rip up, mate.
The public ain't always right.
You're right about that little flicker over.
It's so good.
It looks like it's been there, look, look at that.
Look, because it looks like it's going to hit it.
Yeah, there.
Little dish guys.
And then look at the defender, Benny.
He has to adjust his position.
Wow.
And two dishes.
I cannot think you can get a better hat trick than that.
No, that's the best.
That is the best.
And four goals, actually, as well.
I answered to it really.
It's going for.
Did that take a nick off the wall or that?
Oh, no, did it?
Did it?
Let's replay.
Did that take a nick?
The balls seem to deviate.
It does.
It does.
But that's a four-flag of mine.
It's irrelevant.
It's not going to matter.
But that's even better, because if he actually deliberately just
made it flick someone's head, I mean.
That's it.
That's a real, really big bit.
Real ability.
Yeah.
What a player.
What a player.
You know, when you go in, I mean, you got your opponent.
I mean, what happened to you?
You guys are strikers.
But you know sometimes the mic before.
You're thinking, fuck.
Really?
Do you actually think that there is some place?
Like, swarrow isn't Kavani.
Going into that game.
And you just think it's going to be problems.
Because I like to burst out defense and all that game involved.
But you know, you just got to stay put.
And if he scores, it's going to be on social.
It's going to be in Paris, you know.
If he would have scored.
It's all in the squad when he chopped me up.
I'd have been all over socials in that game.
Did you actually, you know, this serious question now.
Did you worry about social media clips when you're actually playing?
Er, no.
I'm not even...
I'm not sure.
It was sort of the start, wasn't it?
Yeah.
Because I obviously neither of us played in an era where there was social media.
So, which is...
It wasn't as heavy as it was now.
Right.
Back then he used to sort of get away with it.
But there was some account that had posted.
Yeah.
Like, he's just getting twisted up.
And now people are bringing them clips back.
So...
Oh, right.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like, they spot your position on that rain runie guy that we showed you in previous episodes.
But it was more the papers.
I think I've had, like, a two or three out of ten.
The lowest you used to get was a four.
No, no, no.
I've had a lot of them.
There were only a couple of papers that did...
Did it really affect you, if he got it?
Of course he did.
Really?
Of course he did.
I told you this story about me going to the training ground.
You know, the papers are all there.
But all the papers and put them in the locker, so no one could read.
Oh, Jesus.
I'm not exaggerating because he's just thinking...
And especially me, like, I let it get to my head dinner.
You know what I mean?
Eighteen.
Driving asthmides.
You know, big houses and all that.
I thought it was a bonus.
So I had to play up to this character.
Sort of like Big Meeks.
I'm not always happy.
But I'm not always loud and obnoxious.
I'm not always that.
But I sort of...
You know what I'm going to...
How are you on air?
I'm going to that...
Are you going to that character, Dolia?
Are you especially on TV?
So like, when I was everyone was talking, oh, he's so good.
He's going to get undercats of England.
You've got to tell yourself that.
Then you get ego.
And then when it doesn't happen...
And then you read the news.
Oh, my gosh.
And it was a sun.
The news of the world.
Oh, my God.

Who's your favorite team, mate?
Mine would have to be Teddy sharing them, guys, with England.
It's just one of those partnerships that worked that clicked.
For you, Micah, Pablo, Zamoleta, by any chance.
I know you're going to say that.
I would have to pick Joe Hart.
Just on the pitch, if I made a mistake, I just knew he had my back.
I'm sure he kept him very busy.
And I would probably go...
Probably Peter Beansley, who I had amazing partnership with with England.
I think I was about a goal again when he played.

I suppose with Suarez, with all his brilliance, he has had moments of controversy.
A couple of biting incidents.
One of those was obviously a game against Chelsea with Ivanovich.
Another one was in the World Cup.
It's a very much looks as if he has actually bitten Ivanovich.
What is he doing?
He spoils himself though.
He doesn't need to do that.
He's too good for that.
He's obviously got that red mist moment in him.
I think if it's in you, it's in you.
I mean, it's such a strange thing to do.
Never seen that.
He'll never stayed on it.
His character is better than that.
And then he obviously had the kind of racist accusations with Patrice Edwards.
Yeah.
Patrice as well.
Luke Shakey's out.
Do you remember?
When it was Lionel.
That's right.
Luke Shakey's out.
And then I spoke to Jamie Carriger about this.
Because Liverpool reacted.
Didn't they came all out in support?
They chees shirts and everything.
I thought he just didn't.
But he denied it though.
Didn't he?
He denied it at first.
So they come out with Suarez t-shirts in support.
And then Jamie Carriger recently said they got it wrong.
Liverpool got it wrong.
Liverpool got it wrong.
And he said that.
Because he was he was vice captain at the time.
I think he said Steven Jarred wasn't playing.
So he was like at the forefront of everything.
And he just said he regrets it now.
Because that's the only way he knew how to deal with it at the time.
Yeah.
That's the only way he knew how to deal with it at the time.
That's exactly it.
That's exactly it.
That's exactly it.
That's exactly it.
That's exactly it.
And then they came out with this,
we've seen recently with Fernice Sisjunio and Besti Arny,
and you know,
and then suddenly Ben Feaker.
Everyone gets together and Joe Sen will defend people.
Sometimes when it's indefensible.
Yeah.
But it's just,
he doesn't need to do all that.
Does he?
We all get emotional on the pitch, don't we?
But he just, he just takes his line down.
Exactly.
It was that.
He doesn't believe it was.
Oh my gosh.
Do you remember his humble bowl?
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, and he's celebrating after the tunnel. I understand. I understand.
I don't know. I mean, it's just, it's, it's, well, Maradona celebrate when he punched
his in the net. Yeah, but that was, that was a little bit different, though, wasn't it?
Yeah, it was. That was more like, what? Sneak to sneak you in.
Like, at least the referee spotted Swar as he tamble. Yeah. And he got a penalty and
the penalty was missed. He missed it. Yeah. That was an extra
reward and we finished to again, wasn't it? And then to clear it off the line and then
almost to be rewarded, no karma there. I was like, what'd you do it for your country
off the line? It would never cross me mind you. I don't, I've never been in my inbox,
right? I've never been in a situation where I'll be on the line. I mean, the only time
I got called back for corners was in Japan. I bring back the big man that he used to say.
So I don't know whether you would be a net. If the ball's fresh in the net, I'm sure there'd
be some kind of instinct would be. Yeah, I suppose. I think that would, I mean,
loads of players have done that. But it's not quite the Diego moment because it was spotted
by the referee. He was sent off for it. So he's, he's suffered. He can't play in the next game.
And then he's actually in a strange way made his team get through that. Well, it has made his
team get through because that's a module misses it. It's over the bar. Well, that's not
square as he's fought, but I probably would do it to that. I think you'd say, I think I would
do it. I'm not saying one about the country and the world can't. Well, it's like, what's the
difference if someone's cleaned through and you're going to go one-on-one, but you're following
and bringing it up? No, you know what it is. I just the same thing. I don't blame him doing it.
No. I blame his reaction afterwards. He just, I don't know. I don't know. I don't know.
What do you think? I don't, I've got no real issue for that one. No. I mean, it was just
sad for Ghana because it was such a shame. Such a shame for them, but I mean, I'll be in a situation
where no one blasts Maradona for celebrating. And he actually got away with it, which is totally
different. I mean, people blasting for doing it and saying, I was cheating, whatever, that's
your opinion, but they don't have a go at him celebrating. You could see, even then, he was just
every now and again, looking around. See if the rest is going to blow the whistle, but
let's move on. And, well, talk about the, the SS. Oh, yeah. Suarez Sturgeon Sturling. And
I know we mentioned him before, but how good was Daniel? He's a really good player. I think he's
one of the most talented players I've ever played with. That good. Yeah. Technically, amazing.
His football brain is just off the scale because he has to be in terms of the ability wise,
because where he's been. Yeah, I think it was either the clubs. Do you remember when we was talking
about Les Fernandes and Daniel Sturgeon Sturgeon? The different. And you always play. And you
would pick Les because he played with him in New York and do, but Daniel, he just had something.
So he was the best player. You know, we talked about Wayne really and being that guy from so young.
Sturgeon, all tournaments. And then he had a bad injury. I think it was when he was 15, 16,
and he was his hip. So when he came back from that, he was always protective of that. So then
when he went out on the pitch, unless he was feeling under position, he was always at the back of his
mind, but technically passing shooting, everything. I just wish he would have won the league.
I didn't want to chump his league. I guess I was going to lose to a deadly one. That was just
a three-up really. That was his absolute prime. And he had Liverpool man city. That was his
real prime period, wasn't it? Yeah, but even just for him to, because he went on loan to Bolton.
Do you remember that? Big Kevin Davis up front. And Sturgeon played. And then he went to Chelsea,
and that's difficult to do. Chad Evans at Man City was playing ahead of him. And he just thought,
you know what? Sturgeon wants to go with more of a target man. I'm going to go to Chelsea.
He wins the Champions League there. He goes to Liverpool. Right. Man City, Chelsea,
Liverpool. I mean, the club's just ridiculous. I just wish he would have been
or could have stayed fit more often. Then he would have seen the real. Yeah,
a great, incredible talent, incredible potential. And it would have been brilliant. Imagine
playing with swaners as well. It was so clever. So creative with his all-around
game technique. He had a bit of everything. But he's passing as well. You know, just like the one
touch pass in the ad, the movement. That's why Sturgeon was so key. In terms of three players at
the top, I mean, you'd have someone like Bruno Ronaldo, Ted Ves maybe, Firmino Salamone,
obviously. That's another one at Liverpool. Who's your best top three there?
I don't know. That is tough for that. In terms of all working together,
Salah, Firmino, Mane is hard to beat. Just in terms of cohesion. Not saying they've got the best
numbers, which then numbers will be high. But just one coming short, one going long, one who
worked really hard to make it together. And then the all could finish at the right time.
While on the subject of swaners talking about three players at the top, name or messy swaners.
I don't know, he gets any estimates. That's just checknating. That's the best. That's too good.
I would say so. I mean, that's, I don't know, you play against that.
Wait, it's real Madrid. I don't know. Yeah, Benz and I bail.
I still say the barcelotti. Well, messy.
We're with messes. It's amazing. It was swaners. Obviously, the play with messes.
So, you know, the very close friends and stuff. And you see how good swaners is. And then
when you've got a player like messes on another level completely, just makes it's mind bogged
out. Good. See, it's my army though as well. Swarers is still doing all the work.
Yeah. And then messy together under just amazing. Yeah, I love it. Yeah.
I'm going to that last moment is for me, one of my favorite, favorite goals of
Premier League history against Newcastle, actually. And it doesn't necessarily look that
difficult, but it really is. Long from Enrique, taken by Swarers, I'm what's about that?
What's about that? That is the whole, my gosh. Yeah, just to get the line of the balls through
it, and then balance yourself or position yourself to do that. And to know that the keepers come
into the, how can you see him even at the top? There's a two touches on it with a chest on
might be accidental, but the first one to just comes down off that high right and so on.
Yeah, but then I touch to take it around the keeper. What would you have done in that position,
lads? Not that. I'd have had no idea. I just tried to hit it first time or flicking on it.
If you go back to the wrong, it's like you've not gotten much time to make a decision of what to do.
That's why it's extraordinarily good, because to go round a keeper when the keepers on the
sick shell box, it's incredible to have the awareness and the spatial awareness to know he's there,
because you've got to, you've got to watch that ball pretty closely to control it like that.
And then not only that, but as it's dropping, it's in his peripheral vision will be the goalkeeper
in a certain position. And the ball, I mean, the science involved as well as holding the defender
off as well. Yeah, really. Yeah. I actually prefer it. I mean, it's a slight controversial, but
to the bird come on, we showed in a previous episode. I think they're on par. I think they're on par.
It's just so good. It might not look, but you know, when you play,
gone, every man's doing something right. It's just everything about that goal as class,
the touch to finish the ball, everything about it. I just don't think we saw a goal like
bird comes before. No, but I don't think we've really seen one like that. Yeah, when you break
it down, I mean, really, no, I mean, to go around and keep it that, you've seen stuff
with Messi, but not in the Premier League. You know, you can add if somebody wants to argue with the
bird account, that wouldn't, I wouldn't put up much of a fight. Okay, that's it for this episode
of the rest is football. Premially great to the moments that made them. Goodbye for me.
Goodbye for me. Goodbye for me.
