Al Jazeera News Updates — Mass funeral in Gaza, US strikes Iranian vessels. Machine-transcribed; use the interactive transcript above to jump the player to any line.
Al Jazeera Podcasts A funeral procession is set to take place in Gaza for nearly 100 people. They were killed in an Israeli attack nearly three years ago. Their remains were recovered from beneath the rubble of three homes in Gaza City. Recovery efforts have been slow, with Israel restricting the entry of heavy machinery into Gaza. Authorities say thousands of people are still buried beneath the rubble. So on November the 19th, 2023, Israeli fighter jets bombed three homes in the Zaytou neighborhood of Gaza City. And civil defense crews finally recovered the remains of 55 members of a single family. In addition to the families, dozens of people forcibly displaced from their homes had sought shelter there. So in total, the remains of around a hundred Palestinians will be buried. The US military says it targeted and destroyed three Iranian crude oil tankers.
Central Command says the attacks were in response to Iran firing ballistic missiles at US warships. The strike has happened near Karyg Island and in the Gulf of Haman. Since Khamsez, the vessels were part of Iran's so-called shadow fleet trying to bypass sanctions. The US military says it successfully evaded earlier Iranian attacks which it called unprovoked. But Iran's foreign ministry has issued a statement strongly condemning the US for attacking its commercial vessels. It says the US regime and its partners will bear responsibility for the consequences arising from the continuation of US active aggression and intervention in the region. On the Inside Story podcast, we're discussing why Argentina is reigniting the long-running dispute over the Falkland Islands or Malvinas. Buenos Aires says the islands are Argentinian territory while the UK insists they're British. Could this renewed tension escalate into armed conflict?
