With the NHL today, March 16th, Toronto Maple Leafs captain Austin Matthews is out for the rest of the regular season after a neon knee hit from Anaheim Ducks' defenseman Radco. Gouda's, the collision happened in the second period, leaving Matthews with a grade 3 MCL tier in a quad contusion, he had to be helped off the ice in pain and will miss the final 16 games. General manager Brad Triliving didn't hold back, reportedly furious behind the scenes. According to NHL insider Elliott Friedman, Triliving called some players involved right from the road to voice his anger over how the incident was, handled. The lack of a media pushback for Matthews teammates drew heavy fire. No one confronted Gouda's as their captain lay hurt, sparking backlash from fans and media alike. Even had coach Craig Baroube called it out, saying the four players on the ice should have stepped up without delay. Things heated up later though. Easton Cowan dropped the gloves with Ducks' defenseman Jackson Lecombe and the team's piled up 48 penalty minutes in the third period.
The NHL Department of Player Safety hit Gouda's with a five game suspension following a phone hearing. Matthews agent Judd Moldaver blasted the punishment as way too life for the damage done. With 27 goals and 53 points in 60 games this year, Matthews was having another strong season cut short.
