Mega Edition: The Warrant For Instagram, Twitter And UPS In The Kohberger Case (9/5/26)

Investigators in the Bryan Kohberger case used search warrants directed at Twitter and Instagram to reconstruct both his digital footprint and any possible online connection to Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. The Twitter warrant sought account and subscriber information tied to Kohberger beginning in June 2022, around the time he moved to Pullman, along with messages, login information and other activity that could help investigators determine whether he had searched for, followed or communicated with anyone connected to the victims. The Instagram investigation was even broader. Detectives obtained records for the victims’ accounts and later expanded the date range back to June 23, 2022 specifically to determine whether Kohberger had interacted with them before the murders. Investigators were trying to answer a critical question: whether there was evidence of prior contact, surveillance or interest online that could help establish how Kohberger became aware of the victims or the King Road house.

The UPS warrant was different because it was aimed at physical movement rather than social-media activity. Investigators sought surveillance video from UPS delivery vehicles operating in the Moscow area, including footage covering the period surrounding the murders, as part of the massive effort to collect every available camera angle that might have captured vehicles or people moving near King Road. Delivery trucks can carry multiple exterior cameras and travel routes that residential security systems may not cover, making them potentially valuable sources of evidence in reconstructing a suspect vehicle’s movements. Taken together, the Twitter, Instagram and UPS warrants showed how widely investigators cast their net: they were simultaneously trying to reconstruct Kohberger’s online behavior, determine whether he had any digital connection to the victims and assemble surveillance footage from businesses, homes and even delivery vehicles to build a minute-by-minute picture of what happened before and after the murders.
