Hey kids, welcome to Junior's for Jesus.
0:03
Go grab your Bibles, we're gonna be digging in
0:06
and learning some really exciting stories.
0:10
This week we're in a section entitled Messages from Heaven.
0:13
Yesterday we learned about the day of the Lord.
0:16
The day of the Lord is a big concept
0:19
that prophets like Joel talked about in the Bible.
0:22
It's a special day when God will show his power
0:25
and bring judgment to the world.
0:28
It's a day when God takes charge
0:30
and sets everything right.
0:32
The prophets warn the people
0:34
that if they didn't follow God's rules
0:36
and live in a way that pleased him,
0:38
then the day of the Lord would be a very scary time.
0:42
It's a time when probation or the day of salvation is over
0:47
and God will pour out his wrath on sin
0:50
and upon those who have chosen to reject him.
0:54
The prophets wanted the people to understand
0:56
that this day was a day of punishment
0:59
and that they needed to repent and turn back to God.
1:03
Our memory verse for this week is Amos chapter three,
1:06
verse seven, it reads,
1:08
surely the Lord God does nothing
1:11
unless he reveals his secret to his servants, the prophets.
1:20
Monday, pretend that you're old enough
1:23
to have a driver's license
1:24
and as you are driving one day,
1:26
you have a very serious accident.
1:29
Now you're in a courtroom standing before the judge.
1:32
According to this charge, the judge says sternly,
1:36
this accident happened on Saturday at 11 o'clock AM.
1:40
You were in a borrowed car
1:42
speeding recklessly through a children's play zone.
1:46
Your car hit one child who is still in a hospital
1:49
suffering from serious injuries
1:52
and witnesses say they saw you speed away
1:56
Do you plead guilty?
2:00
Would any excuse work?
2:02
How would you feel if the judge knew
2:04
that you claimed to be a Sabbath keeping Christian?
2:09
Where should you have been that morning at 11 o'clock?
2:12
Amos, the next minor prophet wasn't a judge
2:16
but his messages were given to him
2:18
by the judge of the whole universe
2:21
and like a judge, he fearlessly gave them to the people.
2:25
He even mentioned some of their sins
2:28
of which they should plead guilty before the judge.
2:31
There was no excuse for these sins.
2:35
Amos chapter two verses four and five.
2:37
Thus says the Lord for three transgressions of Judah
2:41
and for four, I will not turn away its punishment
2:44
because they have despised the law of the Lord
2:48
and have not kept his commandments.
2:50
Their lies lead to mistray.
2:52
Lies which their fathers followed
2:54
but I will send a fire upon Judah
2:57
and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.
3:00
Amos lived in the kingdom of Judah
3:03
but his messages were for both the kingdoms
3:06
of Israel and Judah.
3:08
His home was in the small town named Tekewa
3:12
which was about 10 miles south of Jerusalem
3:15
in the wilderness of Tekewa.
3:18
How did he earn his living?
3:20
Amos chapter seven verses 14 and 15.
3:23
Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah,
3:26
I was no prophet nor was I a son of a prophet
3:29
but I was a sheep herder and a tender of sycamore fruit.
3:33
Then the Lord took me as I followed the flock
3:36
and the Lord said to me,
3:37
go prophesied to my people Israel.
3:40
About 150 years before the first Jeroboam
3:45
had made two golden calves for his people to worship
3:49
in Israel and he didn't want them to keep going to Judah
3:53
to worship God at the temple in Jerusalem.
3:58
they had gone deeper and deeper into idol worship
4:01
and by the time of Amos,
4:03
they were as wicked as the hidden.
4:06
Jeroboam the second was king of Israel at that time
4:10
and his kingdom was so rich,
4:12
its people didn't feel their need of God.
4:15
Amos chapter six verses three through six
4:19
woe to you who put far off the day of doom
4:22
who caused the seat of violence to come near
4:25
who lie on beds of ivory,
4:28
stretch out on your couches,
4:30
eat lambs from the flock
4:31
and calves from the midst of the stall
4:34
who sing idly to the sound of stringed instruments
4:38
and invent for yourselves musical instruments like David
4:42
who drink wine from bowls and anoint yourselves
4:45
with the best ointments
4:47
but are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.
4:52
Does that mean it's always dangerous to be rich?
4:55
