2:07conference back in April. And I thought we needed a Thursday afternoon live reaction to all of it. Now, later tonight, Joshua Marlow is going to join me and give his reactions to it as well, because I always love to be able to interact with that. But man, we can't wait. We got to get it going. So several big things I want to make sure we hit updates on Cameron Fendz eligibility. There were updates from Coach Malone on say on Kaita and how he's growing and expectations for him. Accountability, defense, and so much more. But the first place I actually want to start is, and I should also say, if you've got questions or reactions, I would love to hear from you in the comments. I see some people already jumping in and bringing some Terry B says, Coach is awesome. Agreed. And I say that because that's exactly where I want to start. Is with the candor, forthrightness, transparency, and lack of coach speak that Coach Malone delivered in this press conference?

3:09And hear me say this. I say this in no way to bash coach Davis and how he handled this. I just say it to say I personally appreciate the way that coach Malone is a little more. Here it is. Here's everything laid out that candor. It is a lot more coach williamsy to me. Did you feel that as well? I'm curious if you've gone back and watched it. And I've messaged and texted with multiple of the other media people who were in attendance at today's press conference. And they agreed saying things like, hey, that's great for us. It helps us write things. It gives us better stories and better things to talk about. And one of those people said what I'm curious about is to see if that is a constant thing or if it was just today and this one. You know what I mean? We'll start to figure that out as we hear from coach Malone more and more and more. But for example, you know, he was asked about Henry Vesar right off the bat.

4:17Obviously, selfishly, we wanted Henry to come back. He said it just other types of things like that that were just more just kind of real life. And of course, some words that we heard from coach Malone in the first minute or two that we would never have heard coach Davis say because coach Davis famously doesn't use any square words and coach Malone dropped a couple right out of the gate. And so again, I feel like just from the depth of talking about what to expect from the team, the public facing accountability that we'll get into and things like that. It's just it's a different thing. And you get that with every coach, right? Every coach is going to be different in how they approach their conversations with the media, even down to his kind of joking around with Brendan Marx about being a Carolina graduate but thinking he was from Duke or somebody asked him because he mentioned offhandedly, like, hey, I haven't found a place to live yet. Somebody asked him about like, so where are you living now?

5:17Just more meaning like, I think what type of dwelling in coach Malone was like, boy, you crazy. If you think I'm going to tell you where I live. And so really appreciate it, Dad. It all made sense. So I think the biggest thing that everybody was curious about was the Cameron Fenn's eligibility. So that's where I want to go next. Big thanks to our guy, RL, Bynum for asking about this was the Fenn's eligibility. So basically, RL just asked like, hey, I want to ask you about Cameron's eligibility limbo. I know it's out of your control, but how are you dealing with that and what are the contingency plans that you and the staff have if Fenn's is ultimately ineligible? And so it was a great question from RL there. And basically, he said, hey, look, simply stated, I'll just quote coach Malone, Fenn's is eligible to work out and practice in lifting condition. He's a huge part of our team right now. Obviously, all those things will kind of take care of themselves in the coming weeks. But the luxury we have is that he's clear to practice and be part of this team.

6:21And I think that's the critical part of this update. Yes, no update on the specifics of an appeals process or getting into another lawsuit as Seth Trimble has been able to do and get his way to eligibility for Louisville. But the big, the big learning is, hey, look, Cameron is eligible to practice with this and be in meshed in what we're doing. And you all know as well as I do how critical that is to things. You think about how long it took last year, Luke Bogevots, for example, to even get to America and be in meshed with the team. Or this year, say on Kaita and how long it took him to get in meshed with the team. And so the fact that Fenn's is in and going, that is critical. And I love the blend and balance of bringing him into the team, loving and caring for him. But also the ability to say, hey, if we got a shift, we got a shift. So for example, he talked about, quote, just like every other player on our roster, we love

7:23Cameron. We care about him. We pour into him. I think Cameron and his family have felt that from day one when he decided to come and join the Tar Hill family. But RL's follow up was, look, what's the dynamic if he doesn't become eligible? And this is where you see the professionalism. Next man up, you got to go with it. And so he talked about there are going to be times in the season where we're not going to have our full complement. There's going to be injuries or whatever it is. And so we said, basically, we've got say on Kite, we've got Alexander or some under rough. We've got Jiren Stevenson, we've got Kate Benjamin, we've got Max Mo Adams, we've got all of these guys that can help out. And so we want Cameron to be part of this because he's critical. He's a grown blank man, he said, that we don't really have anywhere else on our roster. But we got to adapt and adjust as necessary. And so I just, that's a great update to get on Cameron Fenn's. I'm glad to know that he's practicing with the team so they can figure things out. The other big thing in terms of roster personnel is I've been very curious to hear his thoughts

8:28on say on Kite and how he's going to contribute. And I'm still waiting, by the way, for the official pronunciation guide because on all the broadcasts you can hear from Barcelona, it is Kite. Coach Malone says, Kite, we know other play like Kaba Kite from BYU. And so I'm going to continue to say Kite, but it very well might be that we transition to Kite as well. So anyway, for what it's worth. And I think there's been a lot of question of like, hey, look, long term big ceiling, or ceiling kind of things that say on is like by far probably the most talented player in this front court. But how ready is he going to be to go? And I thought Coach Malone was very forthcoming with that and I appreciated it. And said the things that he's going to do well, he'll be very able to do right now. And reading between the lines, the biggest thing right now that he's already able to do is be an elite defender, a backline guy.

9:30You also heard Coach Malone say on the other hand that he doesn't really have much of that pick and pop game yet. So that's going to be the area of growth as well as getting stronger, getting in with Jonas and really working on his body and putting adding muscle to his frame. Not in any sort of way that slows him down, but like ongoing physical strength that allows him to continue to play in the way that he does. But here is the other very encouraging thing about say on to me. Quote what has really been a pleasant surprise watching him play the last couple of weeks. Here you go. Is that he's a lot more skilled than maybe I gave him credit for initially. End quote. And here's what's cool about that is that coach Malone had already prioritized going to get him right out of the gate. We knew that because that's right where he went to go. And it was it was to go overseas and get him right like he talked about. He said when you look at our front court, you look at say on who I think has unlimited potential

10:35was the phrase he used. Going over to Spain to watch him play right after it got the job. And then when we were able to go get a commitment from him, a big step in building this team. Size the length of versatility. He's a beautiful young man. All of that. And so that's really good. He said, but say on is going to be a heck of a player didn't say heck, but that's what I'm going to say here on the show. Excuse me. And so that there is some growth in his offensive skill set in terms of shooting. But there's a lot there. And ultimately said, say on Kaito will be on the floor for us this year. And I'm excited about his growth. And so a lot there a lot to see and a lot to grow on. Now where I want to get to next is talking about the defense. And that we've wondered a lot about what is going to be the identity of a coach Malone team because we don't know yet at the collegiate level. And that's what he indicated. Yes. Hi, praise for the transfer back court trio coming from coach Malone.

11:35We'll look at all of that coming up here in just a second right after I tell you about five hour energy. 12:38Check it out today. All right. The next part of the conversation I want to get to is coach moan was basically asked about like the identity of this team and how they're going to come together. And that's an important thing as you have a new coach coming in. And as we've talked about a lot. In fact, we can't remember who it was with that I talked about recently on a show, but what is going to be the DNA? Oh, it was with Jonathan Adams earlier this week. I was like, all the shows are running together in my head right now in real time. As we do rapid reactions to this press conference. But is defense going to be the DNA of this team? And and we expect so, right? And coach Malone said that as he was asked, I forget who was that asked him, but on what is the style for how you want this team to play and do you think the pieces fit that vision? And coach Malone said, Hey, if you asked our players right now, what do you guys spend a lot of time on? It's defense.

13:38He said, I'm a firm believer in that defense wins championships. And when he even leading into that, he said, the most important thing for me in terms of style of play is defense. Defending is going to be the most important thing for me. And what's interesting about it is you think about the mix of players that coach Malone has brought together and everything they they bring, right? There's a lot of different types of versatility, whether it's maximum atoms as kind of a 4, 3, 3, 4, going to be able to he identified that by the way we've been discussing it. So I was glad to hear coach Malone kind of confirm that. Similarly, we talked just yesterday on the show, Riley Davis and I about the versatility that Samaderoff brings in the front court as really more of a 4, but can slide up to a 5 as well. That's another thing that coach Malone confirmed in this press conference. And so it's good to start getting confirmation about these things we've been identifying in these players this offseason. But with that comes defensive versatility. And so it's great to hear that what we've believed coach Malone would want to be the identity

14:44in the DNA of this team, that's it. But right behind that he identified pace of play as well. And so you started to see that even in some of the clips they've been sharing, the social media teams been sharing this offseason in the lead up. But coach Malone said when he kind of identified three things and then a fourth he said, so number one, the importance of defense, two rebounding, and three then playing an up tempo attacking style of basketball. And we're going to get into the back court in a minute. But when you look at the type of player that Terrence Brown has been, that's what he does is attack, attack, attack. He's going to get to the free throw line, a tonne, put pressure on the rim. That's going to allow him to share the ball with teammates. Neil Avdollas can do a lot of that as a playmaker and and tone setter as well. And so that's great because that's the fourth thing he said. The last part of that he said would be quote the importance of valuing and sharing the basketball, sharing the ball unites teams point to the passer.

15:45I love it. It brings teams together. Perfect. I love that from coach Malone. The next thing he identified, we've kind of talked about the front court a little bit. But we've said it seems like this team, the strength, the best talent is in the back court. And it's in the transfer trio in the back court that I expect to start being Terrence Brown, Matt Abel, and Neil Avdollas. And coach Malone literally said, as he was asked about the back court. We added Terrence Brown. We added Matt Abel. We added Neoclass Avdollas. I think those three guys, you ready for this? This is the high praise. I think those three guys combined for one of the more dynamic and exciting back courts in all of college basketball. End quote. Now to be fair, coach Malone was just getting his brain wrapped around what the country, he's just figuring out his own team, much less other teams around the country. But he's a guy who has seen a lot of talent

16:48at the professional level. He knows what he's getting into. He knows who these guys are and what they can and can't do. And so I was really encouraged to hear him identify, again, what we've been identifying this off season, that in a lot of ways, that trio that will start at the one, two, and three almost certainly can and should be the lifeblood of this roster. Talk about what Terrence Brown has been able to show in his prior years, whether it was FDU or last year at Utah. But here's what's critical because we've talked about what Terrence Brown has to do to continue to grow. He said, now his challenge quote, if he wants to play at the next level, which I love that, North Carolina is a higher level than either FDU or Utah. If he wants to play at this level, quote, can he show teams that he is more than just a score? And next level, not just being Carolina, but the NBA as well, I guess I should say, that he's more than just a score, that he can also run his team, facilitate and make his teammates better. And he's going to force that and I'll explain why in just a second.

17:50But he identified with Matt Abel. Look, this guy could have easily stayed in the NBA draft and that's true. But we're getting a player that's going into his second year of college basketball. He proved last year that he can come off the bench and impact the game with his three point shooting his defense. And the expect this is me adding on now. The expectation is that he's going to do even more of that at Carolina and that he's got a lot more to show as a facilitator, as a playmaker. He's expecting that. And man, if that three headed trio could all facilitate and play make for one another, that's critical. But maybe the most interesting, I'm going to lean forward to the camera here because as he talked about Neo of Dallas, there was some parts of that that stood out to me that we've not really talked about. He said, Neo was such an important get to me because of his size, positionally his vision and playmaking. That's what separates him. But when he talked to Neo, one of the things Neo said was, he talked about how we got to school. Late and it was a new experience and a new country.

18:54And one of the things we know that Neo did, because he was like the first trans reporter to commit to Carolina is he came immediately to Chapel Hill, spent all summer there. And he said, quote, coach Malone said, you want to talk about a guy that put the time in, put the work in, got stronger, his game has improved. I think Neo is going to have an incredible season and the guys of playing with him because he's such a dynamic and willing facilitator and he makes everyone around him better. Watch out for Neo. I know he had that breakout beginning to his freshman year and then kind of tapered off. This dude could be primed for a massive sophomore year at North Carolina. And that's critical. Coach Malone also identified Jayden Young. I say, Dennis is a critical part of this back court because it can't just be those three guys that we expect to start. Young Dennis are going to have critical roles as well. So we'll see what that is. Now, a couple of things that coach Malone talked about with his team. Great question from Michael Coe that led to discussion about accountability and holding each other

19:59to a certain standard. That's going to be important. But also coach Malone as quote, kind of an outsider. How will he adjust to being part of the Carolina family? Oh, he's doing that just fine. One of the next things I love that coach talked about is accountability. It was a great question from Michael co asking about his time in Denver and there was a specific player he kind of called out publicly held accountable because he had asked him a question and coach moan was like he didn't know the answer and so there was like this tough love is Peyton Watson when he was with the nuggets and I got the feeling at times in the past couple

23:05years that some players weren't held to a certain level of accountability that they're just allowed to do their thing and look I'm not in the locker room. I wasn't part of those conversations but it felt like whether you know maybe it was Caleb love or some others that they they weren't playing always within the best for what the system demanded and that when those things went off the rail they weren't benched. I feel like the bench is so often the biggest motivator and I get the feeling I get the vibe I get the understanding from coach Malone that that will not be the case here. He said in this press conference quote I do remember that moment with Peyton Watson and I think it's important because a lot of people are afraid to hold people accountable. If you don't then that means you don't have discipline. If you don't have discipline then what are your standards? What do you have? The intent was not to humiliate. The intent was not to embarrass.

24:06The intent was to send a message that you're a professional player and they are now. These guys are being paid. They deserve to be held accountable. Quote you have a job to do. And if I ask you a question and you can't answer that that means you're not prepared and if you're not prepared that means you're not getting better and when you don't get better unfortunately the opposite gets better and you get worse. This is awesome. I love it. And here's what's cool. He went on to say look when Peyton Watson just signed his new deal with the calves I immediately called him up because I love him and I want to take care of him but my job as a coach is to hold him accountable. And here's something I believe about leadership. This is how I lead like my leadership role now is to oversee for locked on all of the big 10 big 12 and SEC shows. And if I have a host that's not doing his or her job I can't just let him or her just like keep going because that doesn't help him grow or her grow that doesn't help locked on get better. And I am doing a disservice if I don't step in if it was me and say Isaac you're not upholding

25:10the standards that you're called to as a host and you got to do better. That's all coach Malone is saying and I think that's so critical. And especially now in this day and age where they're getting paid a lot of money to play this game. And so I I'm really excited to hear him say how much he wants to hold to people to accountability. Now here's another thing that I love is there's been a lot of ink spill. Let me get a drink of water here. About coach Malone coming into Carolina as a quote unquote outsider. But this dude is doing everything you want to see for somebody coming in being part of the Carolina experience and figuring out like how to really step in and be part of that department. And it was coming out of also he he talked about being a volleyball dead right as a reminder his daughter Bridget plays for Carolina volleyball. But it's clear and obvious how much he

26:10just wants to invest not in the basketball team solely because that's as a as a as a head coach in the NBA. It's just your team. You don't have all these other varsity teams. But he said things like he said I've gone from being the head coach of an NBA team where it's just you to now I'm a head coach with 27 other head coaches. I'm part of something bigger than myself. And it's clear that he's not saying that begrudgingly. He's embracing that. He said I love that about college athletics. It's one of the favorite things about the job. He said quote I can hang out with Scott Forbes and Omaha. I can go watch Jenny Levy's team have a home game before they head off to the final four out at Northwestern meaning low across it like I love this about coach Malone because he's this professional dude that comes in. But my goodness. He wants to be part of this Carolina community. This fraternity of great coaches that makes Carolina Carolina. And he doesn't shy away from those public moments. You know how at home games right now you know it. You've seen it. If you've been to a game coach

27:14Williams and Miss Wanda they have their section right up there over the the players entrance tunnel. And he kind of holds court not in like a way that infringes on what coach Davis was doing or now coach Malone. But that's where he is. And he's got his tickets and porke sits there coach coach Rob and I've had the privilege of sitting in those seats together before actually for RJ Davis's record setting game against Miami a couple years ago. But coach you know how there's if you've been there you know there's a line of people that line up to take pictures with coach Williams in between stuff. And and I love that coach Malone is cool with that. He said quote when I'm at a volleyball game. Yes I am there primarily to be a supporter for my daughter and her teammates in the squad. But unless I plan on putting on a disguise there are also going to be people who want to come up and talk and take a picture. Here it is. That's something that I welcome as well. There's a big difference in welcoming it and just being okay with it. You hear that difference? This is a man who recognizes who he is as a hugely public figure as the face of North Carolina

28:21basketball and he's embracing it. I'm all in on coach Malone. I hope you are too. And man that's great. Let me quickly see because we just got a minute or two left see if we want to get if you've got his some some reactions some questions if you didn't get them in do it now because I'm going to get these quick and then we're going to get out of here. Shadowlack. Yes. What's up Michael Shadron? I'm assuming that you love his directness. Yeah. Right. That's what we talked about out of the gate. This dude is not going to beat around the bush. He's not going to give you a bunch of I mean he's going to say coaching lines like defense wins championships. He said that. But it's he's not going to when asked the direct question. You're not going to get coach speak in response. Jimmy Howard says I love the dog in coach Malone and holding people accountable. Everybody's identifying the same thing. I'm glad it's not just me. Terry B says you see in him a direct no nonsense approach. He knows what he is talking about. It's like he's done this before. Yeah. This guy gets after it. Great

29:27day to be a tarhill grown blank men. Yes. Jimmy Howard says it was nice to hear that say on was able to facilitate to his teammates. Oh, not only roll to the basket. Yes. That's a great call. I need bigs that can get up on the elbow. Play big to bit like some of the best Carolina basketball. You think back to last year the way that Caleb Wilson and Henry Vace are able to play that two man two man game. I think back to the championship team in 2017 the way that Isaiah Dennis and Kennedy meets or able to share that or with Bryce Johnson the year before. I mean they were just carving up that Syracuse zone and that's a great word with that. Tarhill bunny our friend Alan the West Coast says I find him personable and self-confident. I found that in his initial introduction also. That's a great call. This like we've seen that consistency in all of his conversation so far and again I want to go back and watch some of his nuggets press conferences. Can I haven't really done that and see if it's a similar vibe. Maybe

30:31even talk to some some nuggets beat reporters and say like is this the coach Malone that you saw day in. Excuse me and day out. But I like this blend that he's got of look here it is. I'm going to give it to you and I'm going to give it to you straight. But I'm also like not a jerk. I'll be direct with you. That's his jersey style like our guy coach Rob. But I'm going to be personable and I like that balance that he's bringing on and it's like two months from yesterday as the start of the season like we need to get it going now as Terry B says I can't wait for the season to start. Yes hurry up get here Western Carolina that's really really great. Another thing is while he's focused on right now coach Malone is always already looking ahead to you heard him talk about the recruiting trail in next year's class and he said no no denigration to this year's class. But man I got a job to do to look ahead as well as Jimmy Howard

31:33says here I heard him talk about three recruiting classes out and how we watched the last games on Sunday at Adidas at UYBL. Yeah this dude is a junkie and a basketball junkie not a drug junkie hear me not saying that was the last coach there. And so man it's just really really good and so a lot to get to a lot thanks everybody for your your your feedback your responses. I'm glad to hear that you all are identifying kind of some of the same things that that I am and how like I just with coach Davis and again I don't mean this disparagingly it's just kind of different. I didn't really look forward to his press conferences because I didn't feel like got much out of it. I didn't feel like the takeaways were all that helpful and insightful. A lot of it was just like being being private kind of keeping to himself about the team and identifying things. I feel like we're going to get more out of

32:33coach Malone and I'm here for that.
