Murder In Moscow: Touch DNA And How It's Used To Solve Crimes
About this episode
Touch DNA refers to the small amounts of genetic material people can leave behind simply by handling or coming into contact with an object. Unlike blood, saliva or semen, touch DNA usually comes from microscopic skin cells and other biological material deposited on surfaces such as weapons, clothing, door handles, steering wheels, phones or items moved during a crime. Investigators collect those samples by swabbing or otherwise processing areas where a person is likely to have touched something, and forensic laboratories then attempt to develop a DNA profile from the material. Because modern testing can detect extremely small quantities of DNA, touch DNA has become an important tool in cases where there is no obvious biological evidence at the scene.
At the same time, touch DNA can be more complicated to interpret than a traditional blood or saliva sample because finding someone’s DNA on an object does not necessarily prove when, how or why it got there. DNA can sometimes be transferred indirectly, mixtures from multiple people are common, and the amount of material recovered may be very small or incomplete. That means investigators have to evaluate touch DNA alongside the rest of the evidence, including where the sample was found, who had access to the object, whether the person had an innocent reason to handle it and what other physical or digital evidence shows. In criminal investigations, touch DNA can help link a suspect to an object or location or exclude someone from consideration, but its real significance depends heavily on the circumstances surrounding the sample rather than the laboratory result alone.
