Welcome to His Light, Your Path, with Pastor Rod Holler Sr. Today's devotional is titled, Not All Believers Are Fruitful. Pastor Holler will look at 2 Peter, chapter 1, verses 8 and 9, and challenge us to examine our walk with God. And now here is Pastor Holler's devotional, Not All Believers Are Fruitful. 2 Peter, chapter 1, verses 8 and 9. For if these things be in you and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind and cannot see a far off and have forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. There are some who teach that if a person is saved then he will be spiritually fruitful. If he is not fruitful then he is not saved. But according to our text verse, that's not true. It is possible for a believer to not tend
to his spiritual life. He has no fruit, neither is he living with a close walk with God. Let us look at our text verses again. For if these things be in you and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind and cannot see a far off and have forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Peter is teaching that a believer ought to apply himself to his spiritual life. He is to walk in newness of life. He is to apply himself to wisdom. He is to allow God to conform him into the image of his son. He is to remember that he is a child of God destined for eternity in heaven. That is the way that God wants it to be. But not all believers tend to their spiritual life. The Bible tells of God's people that have not been very
fruitful. Consider David was not fruitful when he took Bashiba and murdered her husband. John was not fruitful when he was disobeying God. Moses was not fruitful when he struck the rock. Samson was not fruitful when he took the harlot. Peter was not fruitful when he denied the Lord three times. As a matter of fact, these believers were acting like unsafe people. Paul had managed the believers' occurrence to consider that some believers among them have suffered and even died because of their ill behavior at the communion table. Note, verse Corinthians 1129, for he that Edith and Drinketh unworthily, Edith and Drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. Verse 30, for this cause many are weak and sickly among you and many sleep
referring to death. They were behaving like the unsaved, yet they were very much saved. Surely, they were not being fruitful. In our text verses, Peter is encouraging born again people to tend to their spiritual life. Let us consider our text verses in context. Peter opens the letter stating clearly that he is addressing saved people. Therefore, let us read 2 Peter 1, 5 through 9, and beside this giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, and to your virtue knowledge, and to your knowledge temperance, and to your temperance, patience, and to patience, godliness, and to godliness, brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness, charity. For if these things be in you and abound, they make ye that ye
shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lack at these things is blind, and cannot see a far off, and have forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Let us tend daily to our spiritual life. That was the conclusion of Pastor Holler's devotional, not all believers are fruitful. From 2 Peter 1, we learned it is possible for believers to neglect their spiritual lives and become barren and unfruitful, even though they are saved. But Peter reminds us that we must grow in our faith, adding to it virtue, knowledge, self-control, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. When we allow these qualities to grow in us, we will not be unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
